Dubbed the “Urban Generation,” this new cinema is driven by young filmmakers who emerged in the shadow of the events at Tiananmen Square in 1989. What unites diverse directors under the “Urban Generation” rubric is their creative engagement with the wrenching economic and social transformations underway in China. Urban Generation filmmakers are vanguard interpreters of the confusion and anxiety triggered by the massive urbanization of contemporary China. This collection brings together some of the most recent original research on this emerging cinema and its relationship to Chinese society.The contributors analyze the historical and social conditions that gave rise to the Urban Generation, its aesthetic innovation, and its ambivalent relationship to China’s mainstream film industry and the international film market. Focusing attention on the Urban Generation’s sense of social urgency, its documentary impulses, and its representations of gender and sexuality, the contributors highlight the characters who populate this new urban cinema-ordinary and marginalized city dwellers including aimless bohemians, petty thieves, prostitutes, postal workers, taxi drivers, migrant workers-and the fact that these “floating urban subjects” are often portrayed by non-professional actors. Some essays concentrate on specific films (such as Shower and Suzhou River) or filmmakers (including Jia Zhangke and Zhang Yuan), while others survey broader concerns. Together the thirteen essays in this collection give a multifaceted account of a significant, ongoing cinematic and cultural phenomenon.  Contributors. Asian cinema studies – at the intersection of film\/media studies and area studies – has rapidly transformed under the impact of globalization, compounded by the resurgence of a variety of nationalist discourses as well as counter-discourses, new socio-political movements, and the possibilities afforded by digital media. Differentiated experiences of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic have further heightened interest in the digital everyday and the renewed geopolitical divide between East and West, and between North and South. Thematized into six sections, the 46 chapters in this anthology address established paradigms of scholarship and viewership in Asian cinemas like extreme genres, cinephilia, festivals, and national cinema, while also highlighting political and archival concerns that firmly situate Asian cinemas within local and translocal milieus. Underrepresented cinemas of North Korea, Bangladesh, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Cambodia, appear here amidst a broader cross-regional, comparative approach.  An ideal resource for film, media, cultural and Asian studies researchers, students, and scholars, as well as informed readers with an interest in Asian cinemas.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51017772695825,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51017774596369,"sku":"NIN9781032199405","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585245311249,"sku":"NLS9781032199405","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032199407.jpg?v=1750751147"},{"product_id":"wireless-power-transfer-book-zhen-zhang-9781119654063","title":"Wireless Power Transfer","description":"Wireless Power Transfer Presents a detailed overview of multiple-objective wireless power transfer (WPT) technologies, including the latest research developments and emerging applications   Wireless Power Transfer: Principles and Applications offers comprehensive coverage of all key aspects of wireless power transfer (WPT) technologies, including fundamental theory, intelligent control, configuration analysis, and emerging power electronics techniques. It offers an in-depth study of three scenes from Roman Holiday (1953), each showcasing different combinations of verbal and non-verbal performance.  Through detailed study, this book demonstrates how Roman Holiday can be broken down into Episodes, Events, Facts, Tasks, and Actions, while also exploring the semiotic modes involved in acting, art direction, cinematography, and editing. It reveals how acting constructs characters, relationships, situations, and the story’s generic structure, and examines how art direction, cinematography, and editing contribute to both performance and genre development. Building on these investigations, the book hypothesises performance features. These hypothesised features are subsequently tested on the Chinese film Raise the Red Lantern (1991), showcasing their flexibility and potential for broader application in film performance.  The book makes a significant contribution to existing research by bridging film performance theories with social semiotics, synthesising them into a cohesive framework that is applicable to both Hollywood and non-Hollywood films. This book is especially valuable for scholars, practitioners, and students of film studies and social semiotics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51627375395089,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51627375624465,"sku":"NGR9781032711676","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52656892412177,"sku":"NLS9781032711676","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032711671.jpg?v=1760780867"},{"product_id":"wireless-power-transfer-for-unmanned-aircraft-book-zhen-zhang-9781108472432","title":"Wireless Power Transfer for Unmanned Aircraft","description":"Discover the principles of wireless power transfer for unmanned aerial vehicles, from theoretical modelling to practical applications. Drawing extensively on classical historical sources, excavated manuscripts, unearthed martial‑arts artifacts, and a method of mutual corroboration between textual narratives and historical materials, it traces the development of Wushu from the prehistoric cultural era through the practices of the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties.   The study charts how Wushu transformed from its origins in hunting and warfare into a culturally embedded system—a “meta‑history” that integrates moral cultivation, aesthetic expression, ritual functions, and educational value. Illustrated with a rich array of rare images sourced from ancient Chinese cultural relics—including prehistoric murals, artifacts from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods, Han Dynasty stone carvings, and Dunhuang murals—the book offers both scholarly depth and documentary significance.   Designed for researchers in historical and cultural studies, scholars of Wushu, and general history enthusiasts, this volume combines academic rigor with accessibility, presenting a comprehensive view of the early development of Chinese martial culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53475975332113,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53475975528721,"sku":"NGR9789819579877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789819579877.jpg?v=1782210274"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-zhen-zhang.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
