Evidence from the author's autobiographical experiences and data from interviews with a variety of academics have been thematically analysed to inform a short autoethnodrama set in a university on the UK. The autoethnodrama considers the 'impact' of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and current such exercises, and the possible and real effects of the pressure to 'publish or perish' on institutional culture and individual lives. The author uses the autoethnodrama to identify staff development strategies that offer the potential for a less stressful academic writing process and democratic university environment including mentoring and other explicit institutional support. The process of producing this work is part of an emerging trend in academic research that seeks to further democratise conventional academic writing processes and progress the case for a more inclusive and expansive approach to academic writing and academic life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49592942493969,"sku":"GOR013472483","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9462098883.jpg?v=1751032935"},{"product_id":"rich-pickings-book-daphne-loads-9789004389946","title":"Rich Pickings","description":"Rich Pickings: Creative Professional Development Activities for University Teachers brings together scholarship and experiential activities to show how active engagement with literary and nonliterary texts can prompt deep thinking about teaching practice and teacher identities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49802276176145,"sku":"CIN9004389946VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680361541905,"sku":"NLS9789004389946","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9004389946.jpg?v=1768560692"},{"product_id":"grieving-as-a-teacher-s-curriculum-book-edward-podsiadlik-iii-9789004422490","title":"Grieving as a Teacher's Curriculum","description":"Podsiadlik integrates educational philosophy, literary analysis, and reflective practice to examine ways in which grief can illuminate the nuances and complexities of a teacher's life and work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50399144182033,"sku":"CIN9004422498G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52679423525137,"sku":"NLS9789004422490","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9004422498.jpg?v=1768559416"},{"product_id":"balancing-care-and-excellence-in-higher-education-book-carolyne-ali-khan-9789004693012","title":"Balancing Care and Excellence in Higher Education","description":"We believe the world needs more care. This volume seeks to describe theoretical, empirical, and phenomenological evidence toward creating a higher education environment that values excellence in its teaching, research, and service while at the same time ensuring that those involved in these endeavors are cared for. The primary purpose is to provide a state-of-the-art synthesis of the delicate balance between striving for excellence in higher education while at the same time exhibiting an ethic of care for all stakeholders involved. The second purpose is to honor the work and legacy of Jeffrey W. Cornett who embodied this balance during his long and successful career in higher education. Upon Dr. Cornett’s retirement, it is fitting to visit balance between care and excellence as multiple tensions push and pull on higher education – from innovative ideas, changing funding structures, and the corporatization of higher education. This volume will serve to inform all those invested in faculty development, student learning and administration in higher education from educational researchers, practitioners, and policymakers – with the most up-to-date understandings of how we can simultaneously strive for excellence in higher education and simultaneously ensure that those around us in this shared space are cared for. The doing of art to investigate ideas, situations, and experiences embraces bell hooks’ concept of education as the practice of freedom, a practice in which everyone can learn and every voice counts.    Through the use of photography, collage, painting, sculpture, textile arts and dance, 10 current and former doctoral students who had enrolled in an arts-based research course show and write about how arts-based methods enriched their educational experiences, celebrated their wholeness by dissolving the barriers between their scholar-artist-teacher-activist selves, and affirmed the inner artist even in those who doubted they had one. Furthermore, their work establishes that arts-based research can reveal dimensions of experience that elude traditional research methods.    Contributors are: Michael Alston, Kelly Bare, Shawn F. From this perspective, the university produces multiple tensions and moments of crises, where it seems that there is limited space left for the intrinsic enjoyment arising from scholarly practices. Contributors rupture the bounds of what is permissible and possible within their daily lives, habits and practices. As such, this book addresses increasingly significant questions. What are some of the multiple and different ways that we can reclaim pleasure and enhance the durations and intensities of our passions, desires and becomings within the contemporary university? How might these aspirations be realised? What are the spaces for the pleasurable production of research that might be opened up? How might we reconfigure the neoliberal university to be a place of more affect, where desire, laughter and joy join with the work that we seek to undertake and the communities whom we serve?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52394331767057,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52394331996433,"sku":"GOR014515836","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789463511773.jpg?v=1768560554"},{"product_id":"learning-in-the-world-and-on-the-job-book-mitch-bleier-9789004424234","title":"Learning in the World and on the Job","description":"Schooling, the most ubiquitous species of formal educational practice, removes learners from the world in which they exist and places them in contrived environments in order to educate them for the world in which they will work, play, and engage in other forms of cultural production for the rest of their time on Earth. While this arrangement seems to work for some, particularly those in academia and policymaking (who make decisions about educating others), it serves many of us somewhat less satisfactorily. This book documents the ongoing journey of a young cheese professional as she navigates the worlds of formal and informal education and the craft and art of cheesemaking. Her self-education is examined as she appropriates available resources in the service of constructing a professional learning program in the world and on the job. As she both succeeds and bumps up against obstacles in the pursuit of a life and a future in uncharted territory, we explore her being and becoming a professional cheesemaker, affineur and cheesemonger.  A parallel story of an emerging educational researcher is examined as he partners with the cheese professional, propelling both of their stories into uncharted territory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52664675893521,"sku":"NLS9789004424234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004424234.jpg?v=1768560056"},{"product_id":"youths-cogenerative-dialogues-with-scientists-book-pei-ling-hsu-9789004436831","title":"Youths’ Cogenerative Dialogues with Scientists","description":"Working with scientists has been suggested as a powerful activity that can stimulate students’ interest and career aspirations in science. Our addiction to fossil fuels and powerful technologies is dangerously altering the Earth’s natural systems, giving rise to well-documented global crises of climate change, plastic pollution of the oceans, and tragic loss of biocultural diversity.    These crises have created a unique challenge for STEM educators, given that STEM disciplinary knowledge and skills are often viewed as the panacea to the world’s economic and environmental problems. This popular view tends to focus narrowly, however, on students learning scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical concepts about the world out there, thereby ignoring the crucial role education must play in shaping students’ attitudes and values – their inner worlds – that drive moral agency to live and work in sustainable ways. It is moral agency that empowers socially and environmentally responsible citizens to tackle global crises. Multilevel studies address a range of timely issues, including emotional energy, discrete emotions, emotion regulation, and a host of issues that arose, such as managing negative emotions like frustration and anxiety, dealing with disruptive students, and regulating negative emotions such as frustration, embarrassment, disgust, shame, and anger. A significant outcome is that teachers can play an important role in supporting students to successfully regulate negative emotions and support learning. A unifying methodology is the use of classroom events as the unit for analysis in research that connects to the interests of teacher educators, teachers, and researchers who can adapt what we have done and learned, and apply it in their local contexts. Educational poetics is rooted in the philosophical and aesthetic thought of South Asia, specifically in how contemplative and creative practices re-introduced by Rabindranath Tagore. The book holds many lessons, as the author talks about her collaboration with teachers and her experience in coauthoring research reports with them. She also discusses how to teach and implement instructional interventions. This practical knowledge is supported by perspectives from cultural historical activity theory (CHAT). Such a stance offers conceptual clarity to the book's lessons by drawing from across continents, institutions and academic fields. The culmination of these efforts makes for fascinating reading, one that sheds much needed theoretical-practical light for practitioners to take transformative action in their own classrooms.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52678327206161,"sku":"NLS9789004512153","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004512153.jpg?v=1768559193"},{"product_id":"learning-in-the-world-and-on-the-job-book-mitch-bleier-9789004424227","title":"Learning in the World and on the Job","description":"Schooling, the most ubiquitous species of formal educational practice, removes learners from the world in which they exist and places them in contrived environments in order to educate them for the world in which they will work, play, and engage in other forms of cultural production for the rest of their time on Earth. While this arrangement seems to work for some, particularly those in academia and policymaking (who make decisions about educating others), it serves many of us somewhat less satisfactorily. This book documents the ongoing journey of a young cheese professional as she navigates the worlds of formal and informal education and the craft and art of cheesemaking. Her self-education is examined as she appropriates available resources in the service of constructing a professional learning program in the world and on the job. As she both succeeds and bumps up against obstacles in the pursuit of a life and a future in uncharted territory, we explore her being and becoming a professional cheesemaker, affineur and cheesemonger.  A parallel story of an emerging educational researcher is examined as he partners with the cheese professional, propelling both of their stories into uncharted territory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52678515523857,"sku":"NLS9789004424227","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004424227.jpg?v=1768559075"},{"product_id":"critical-theorizations-of-education-book-ali-a-abdi-9789004427204","title":"Critical Theorizations of Education","description":"With the limited availability of related foci in the area of critical educational studies, Critical Theorizations of Education is timely in both its topical relevance and time-space-themed discursive interventions. Our addiction to fossil fuels and powerful technologies is dangerously altering the Earth’s natural systems, giving rise to well-documented global crises of climate change, plastic pollution of the oceans, and tragic loss of biocultural diversity.    These crises have created a unique challenge for STEM educators, given that STEM disciplinary knowledge and skills are often viewed as the panacea to the world’s economic and environmental problems. This popular view tends to focus narrowly, however, on students learning scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical concepts about the world out there, thereby ignoring the crucial role education must play in shaping students’ attitudes and values – their inner worlds – that drive moral agency to live and work in sustainable ways. It is moral agency that empowers socially and environmentally responsible citizens to tackle global crises.    In this timely book you will read inspiring stories of how professional educators in STEM-related fields have embraced transformative learning and arts education to develop and implement integrated STEAM education programs and practices that are preparing young people with special capabilities and values to actively contribute to the sustainable development of a world in crisis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52679422542097,"sku":"NLS9789004524699","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004524699.jpg?v=1768558982"},{"product_id":"transforming-learning-and-teaching-book-kenneth-tobin-9789004424265","title":"Transforming Learning and Teaching","description":"This book consists of 19 chapters on heuristics written by 21 diverse researchers. This volume seeks to describe theoretical, empirical, and phenomenological evidence toward creating a higher education environment that values excellence in its teaching, research, and service while at the same time ensuring that those involved in these endeavors are cared for. The primary purpose is to provide a state-of-the-art synthesis of the delicate balance between striving for excellence in higher education while at the same time exhibiting an ethic of care for all stakeholders involved. The second purpose is to honor the work and legacy of Jeffrey W. Cornett who embodied this balance during his long and successful career in higher education. Upon Dr. Cornett’s retirement, it is fitting to visit balance between care and excellence as multiple tensions push and pull on higher education – from innovative ideas, changing funding structures, and the corporatization of higher education. This volume will serve to inform all those invested in faculty development, student learning and administration in higher education from educational researchers, practitioners, and policymakers – with the most up-to-date understandings of how we can simultaneously strive for excellence in higher education and simultaneously ensure that those around us in this shared space are cared for. Transformative learning is important for teachers to think about their practices, change their thinking, and share the stories of their experience for learners’ empowerment.    This is an autoethnographic account of the author's experience as a transformative and transforming educator that unfolds the ways he has used ethical dilemma story pedagogy to explore interpretative and creative spaces for transformative learning, both personally and with a group of trainee teachers who take the responsibility to facilitate students’ learning into a purposeful path. The ethical dilemma story pedagogy provides relatable scenarios to challenge and unsettle learners’ thought processes leading to acknowledgment of multiple viewpoints. The book is intended for a broad audience of teachers, teacher educators, researchers, and policymakers. Interesting perspectives, challenging problems, and fresh solutions grounded in cutting edge theory and research are presented, interrogated, elaborated and, while retaining complexity, offer transformative visions within a context of political tensions, historical legacies, and grand challenges associated with Anthropocene (e.g., sustainability, climate change, mass extinctions).    Within overarching sociocultural frameworks, authors address diverse critical issues using rich theoretical frameworks and methodologies suited to research today and a necessity to make a difference while ensuring that all participants benefit from research and high standards of ethical conduct. The focus of education is broad, encompassing teaching, learning and curriculum in pre-k-12 schools, museums and other informal institutions, community gardens, and cheeseworld. Teaching and learning are considered for a wide range of ages, languages, and nationalities. An important stance that permeates the book is that research is an activity from which all participants learn, benefit, and transform personal and community practices. Transformation is an integral part of research in science education. Auto\/biography and auto\/ethnography are genres that blend ethnographic interests with life writing and they tell about a culture at the same time they tell about an individual life. This book presents educational researchers, in exemplary form, the possibilities and constraints of both auto\/biography and auto\/ethnography as methods of doing educational research. The contributors to this volume explore, by means of examples, auto\/biography and auto\/ethnography as means for critical analysis and as tool kit for the different stakeholders in education. The four thematic sections deal with: a. different possible uses and constraints of the two methods b. understanding teaching and teaching to learn c. institutional critiques d. experiences and trajectories as evidence of a sociology of everyday life. The book was written to be used by upper undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in research design; because of its practical approach, it is highly suitable for those contexts where research methods courses do not exist. The audience also includes professors, who want to have a reference on design and methodology, and those who have not yet had the opportunity to employ a particular method.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53128637612305,"sku":"GOR014759580","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789077874042.jpg?v=1771159269"},{"product_id":"censorship-or-selection-book-shaheen-shariff-9789087900748","title":"Censorship! ...or Selection?","description":"This book is a must read for academics, policy-makers and teachers who grapple with policy and pedagogical decisions about what to include or exclude in schools that cater to diverse stakeholders. Much has been written about controversial, litigious school censorship controversies relating to text and library books. Post-September 11th, these have expanded to banning of religious clothing and symbols. Court challenges emerge in the context of a global and political media backdrop that consistently reinforces anti-Muslim sentiment. The re-emergence of an extreme right-wing religious backlash against liberal civil liberties that endorse homosexuality, feminism, religious and racial equality create formidable dilemmas for educators, further complicated by the blurred boundaries of free expression, safety and privacy in cyber-space, as students increasingly communicate on-line. Shariff and Johnny argue that censorship is deeply rooted in hegemonic perspectives that sustain neo-colonial privilege and silence the social, historical and intellectual contributions of some students. This \"curriculum of orthodoxy\" supports discriminatory political\/media stereotypes of non-Caucasian ethnic groups through \"selection\" that is in fact \"censorship.\" The authors introduce a Critical Legal Literacy model for teacher education that combines legal and digital literacies with critical educational pedagogy to help educators meet contemporary challenges through pluralistic, ethical and educational decisions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53571195371793,"sku":"NLS9789087900748","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087900748.jpg?v=1779146779"},{"product_id":"research-collaboration-book-stephen-m-ritchie-9789087901943","title":"Research Collaboration","description":"Even though collaboration is entrenched in research practices, few studies have considered how the practice is enacted, among whom and to what effect. Reviewing the accounts of successful or productive collaborative-research teams in which collaborators report either concord or conflict in their relational dynamics, featured in this volume, leads to a deeper understanding of what it means to collaborate. The contributing authors explore their relationships and praxis in particular research collaborations that range from large interdisciplinary teams to intimate teams between university-based researchers who collaborate with teachers or students. Successes experienced by the contributors are discussed in terms of solidarity, emotional energy, trust, agency, power, and ethical praxis. It is clear from the studies reported here that despite recognized differences between researchers in teams, if they work with each other for each other, it is likely that they will build solidarity, and experience positive emotional energy and trust. The edited volume is relevant to both experienced and early career researchers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53571198189841,"sku":"NLS9789087901943","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087901943.jpg?v=1779146786"},{"product_id":"students-in-action-book-ian-stith-9789087905354","title":"Students in Action","description":"This book chronicles our work on cogenerative dialoguing in high schools and an elementary school. Cogenerative dialoguing brings together students, teachers, and other relevant stakeholders in the educational enterprise to make sense of some common teaching--learning experiences and issues arising thereof in order to design changes in their environment for the purpose of improving the teaching--learning situation. Our work addresses the overarching question: What will happen when cogenerative dialogue praxis is introduced to an elementary school class? More specifically we explore; the use of cogenerative dialogues as research praxis in terms of some of the ethical issues inherent in classroom research; how cogenerative dialogue praxis can serve as one viable solution for teachers to ethically mediate the various activity systems that constitute a class; the internal contradictions inherent in cogenerative dialogues; the \"unfocused\" moments during cogenerative dialogues; the long term learning that takes place during the cogenerative dialogues; and finally we explore what we learned from the elementary teacher we worked with. The intended audiences for this book are professionals or acedemics that have used, or are curious about, cogenerative dialogues. Specifically, the unique application of cogenerative dialogues in an elementary school speaks to teachers at that level interested in increasing student participation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53571203367185,"sku":"NLS9789087905354","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087905354.jpg?v=1779146801"},{"product_id":"between-the-real-and-the-imagined-book-leslie-james-pereira-9789087904661","title":"Between the 'Real' and the 'Imagined'","description":"How can the idea of leadership be understood in the context of modern day schools? Within a framework of narrative inquiry, the author describes, analyses and reconceptualises issues and understandings that are central to the human experience and which impact heavily on the interactions between the leader and the led. Teacher educators and researchers have spent a great deal of time seeking and attempting to eradicate the flaws in existing structures and practices, but significantly less time learning to perceive the absences. The premise of this book is that until we can identify and begin to address what is absent, teacher education will be constrained by a perennial recycling of concerns that have characterized so much of research, policy and practice to date. If teacher education is to have a different future, we need to ask different and difficult questions. This book, with contributions from theorists in Australia, Canada and the United States, addresses the challenges we face in establishing a more hopeful future for teacher education. The authors' provocative contributions identify what is 'missing' in teacher education while providing critical counterpoints to existing frames of reference in the field. In writing 'against the grain' they open up new conceptual spaces and exciting trajectories for a different teacher education.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53571218014481,"sku":"NLS9789087902896","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087902896.jpg?v=1779146844"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/bold-visions-in-educational-research-book-series.oembed?page=3","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
