The semester featured a Winter School (with four lecture series) and several focused weeks. This volume contains the notes of the lecture series of the Winter School and some of the lecture notes from the focused weeks. Topics covered in this collection range from algebraic geometry of complex curves, lattice homology of curve and surface singularities to novel results in smooth four-dimensional topology and grid homology, and to Seiberg-Witten homotopy theory and ‘spacification’ of knot invariants. Some of these topics are already well-documented in the literature, and the lectures aim to provide a new perspective and fresh connections. Other topics are rather new and have been covered only in research papers. We hope that this volume will be useful not only for advanced graduate students and early-stage researchers, but also for the more experienced geometers and topologists who want to be informed about the latest developments in the field.

Paul Erdos was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, whose work in number theory, combinatorics, set theory, analysis, and other branches of mathematics has determined the development of large areas of these fields. Computers pose a great ch- lenge to mathematical sciences, as the range of phenomena available for rigorous mathematical analysis has been enormously expanded, demanding the development of a new generation of mathematical tools. There is an explosive growth of new mathematical disciplines to satisfy this demand, in particular related to discrete mathematics. However, it can be argued that at large mathematics is yet to provide the essential breakthrough to meet the challenge. The required paradigm shift in our view should be compa- ble to the shift in scienti?c thinking provided by the Newtonian revolution over 300 years ago. Studies of large-scale random graphs and networks are critical for the progress, using methods of discrete mathematics, probabil- tic combinatorics, graph theory, and statistical physics. Recent advances in large scale random network studies are described in this handbook, which provides a signi?cant update and extension - yond the materials presented in the Handbook of Graphs and Networks published in 2003 by Wiley. Indeed, the lectures on "Instanton Floer homology and applications" (by Mrowka and Baldwin) give a detailed account on instanton invariants, apply it in the sutured setting, and provide results regarding the minimal genus problem. Novel invariants are discussed in the lectures of Gukov and Park and provide a close connection to theoretical physics. The lectures of Lobb and Greene on the square peg problem give an up-to-date account regarding the solution of this simple-looking, more than 100 years old problem on the plane. The lectures of Maggie Miller describe knotted surfaces in the 4-dimensional sphere, while the lectures of Mark Hughes provide a diagrammatic approach to the same problem. Arunima Ray's lectures also deal with surfaces, but in this case, the embedding is not necessarily smooth, only 'locally flat'. Kyle Hayden’s lectures connect link homologies to the study of surfaces in four-dimensional spaces.
