The ‘Khanate of Khiva’ is the term employed in Western historiography to denote the political formation that was put in place by the Qonghrats. The latter was a dynasty of Uzbek origin that ruled roughly between the last quarter of the 18th century and 1920. It ruled over the region known as Khorezm (Ar. Khwārazm), one of the biggest oases of Central Asia, traversed by the Amu Darya and nestled within the territory of what is today Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. The main objective of this work is to show that prior to Sovietization the dispensation of justice in Khorezm depended mostly on a group of officials who represented the dynasty in power, but who lacked any specialised legal training. It is important to reflect on this particular aspect of the legal system developed by the Muslim principality that we refer to as ‘the Khanate of Khiva,’ for conventional wisdom says that the practice of law in pre-modern Muslim societies was usually the business of the ʿulamāʾ, i.e., the scholars of Islam.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50293446344977,"sku":"GOR013915530","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52668173943057,"sku":"NLS9789004419391","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52763096482065,"sku":"NIN9789004419391","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53157395005713,"sku":"NGR9789004419391","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/900441939X.jpg?v=1768563106"},{"product_id":"secret-history-of-the-mongols-volume-3-supplement-book-igor-de-rachewiltz-9789004250567","title":"The Secret History of the Mongols, VOLUME 3 (Supplement)","description":"Volume Three of Igor de Rachewiltz’s annotated translation of the Secret History of the Mongols (Brill 2004, 2006), now regarded as the standard English version of this epic biography of Činggis Qan, is both a complement and a supplement to the first two volumes. On the one hand it revises and updates the work to the end of 2012, and on the other it introduces new interpretations and ideas about both the identity of its anonymous author and the date of its composition. It is, therefore, an indispensable companion volume for all readers and users of the earliest Mongolian literary production which contains, in the words of Arthur Waley, ‘some of the most vivid primitive literature that exists anywhere in the world.’ The Secret History of the Mongols has been selected by Choice as Outstanding Academic Title (2005).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51065620496657,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51065622429969,"sku":"NIN9789004250567","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52683632541969,"sku":"NLS9789004250567","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9004250565.jpg?v=1768560050"},{"product_id":"on-the-cusp-of-an-era-book-doris-srinivasan-9789004154513","title":"On the Cusp of an Era","description":"South Asian religious art became codified during the Kusana Period. Taking an institutional-historical and historical-anthropological approach, the essays engage with two Qing agencies well-known for their governance of non-Han groups: the Lifanyuan and Libu. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of the Lifanyuan and Libu, revising and assessing the state of affairs in the under-researched field of these two institutions. The contributors explore the imperial policies towards and the shifting classifications of minority groups in the Qing Empire, explicitly pairing and comparing the Lifanyuan and Libu as in some sense cognate agencies. The reliability of Sallam's journey from Samarra to Western China and back (842-45), however, has always been a highly contested issue. Here ample attention is given to the journeys that notions and objects undertook to transmit spatial values to other civilizations. Previous studies considered China’s Uyghurs from the perspective of the majority Han (state or people). Conversely, The Art of Symbolic Resistance considers Uyghur identities from a local perspective, based on interviews conducted with group members over nearly twenty years. Smith Finley rejects assertions that the Uyghur ethnic group is a ‘creation of the Chinese state’, suggesting that contemporary Uyghur identities involve a complex interplay between long-standing intra-group socio-cultural commonalities and a more recently evolved sense of common enmity towards the Han. This book advances the discipline in three senses: from a focus on sporadic violent opposition to one on everyday symbolic resistance; from state to ‘local’ representations; and from a conceptualisation of Uyghurs as ‘victim’ to one of ‘creative agent’.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52683812110609,"sku":"NLS9789004254916","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004254916.jpg?v=1770112768"},{"product_id":"divine-knowledge-book-brian-baumann-9789004155756","title":"Divine Knowledge","description":"In an original and compelling examination of traditional mathematics, this comprehensive study of the anonymous Manual of Mongolian Astrology and Divination (published by A. The changes of patterns of nomadism are equally central to an understanding of contemporary Mongolia as the economic focus on natural resources.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53349866078481,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53349866471697,"sku":"NLS9789004224346","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004224346.jpg?v=1774657322"},{"product_id":"bukhara-and-the-muslims-of-russia-book-allen-j-frank-9789004232884","title":"Bukhara and the Muslims of Russia","description":"In Bukhara and the Muslims of Russia Allen Frank examines the relationship between Muslims in Russia and the city of Bukhara, examining paradoxes emerging the city's Sufism-based Islamic prestige, and the emergence of Islamic reformism in Russia.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53349867127057,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53349867225361,"sku":"NLS9789004232884","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004232884.jpg?v=1774657332"},{"product_id":"turkic-medical-treatise-from-islamic-central-asia-book-karoly-9789004282568","title":"A Turkic Medical Treatise from Islamic Central Asia","description":"This is the first serious study on seventeenth-century Central Asian medicine that provides a major resource for the linguistic and cultural history of Central Asia. The ensuing Mongol-Armenian relations were varied. The Greater Armenians became subjects of the Mongol Empire, whereas the Cilician Armenians, by entering into vassalage, became allies and furthered the Mongol conquests.
