Whatever success I may have achieved then in fulfilling that intention, even the effort now would be foolhardy. The literature has grown so rapidly in the past decade that I certainly could not even read all of the essential papers, let alone understand and analyze them. My goal here, therefore, is simply to introduce the major features of lysosomes at a level I hope will be useful both to I;ldvanced students and to researchers interested in obtaining a broad background. This is in keeping with the design of the Cellular Organelles series: the series is more a set of advanced texts than of review monographs. This design carries with it the decision not to support each point by refer- ences to the original literature. I apologize for the injustice involved in such a decision but feel that in any event it would be impossibly unwieldy to cite, adequately and in a balanced manner, the contributions of the vast network of researchers responsible for the information upon which I draw.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089276891409,"sku":"NLS9780306431265","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780306431265.jpg?v=1756906568"},{"product_id":"ribosomes-book-alexander-s-spirin-9780306461453","title":"Ribosomes","description":"Dr. Spirin is a world authority on ribosomes and has published two earlier books in this area in English. Having selected our authors, we have offered them virtually complete freedom to reflect and speculate in a field in which they have achieved prominence. The response to the first two volumes has been rewarding. The present one continues in this tradition. While we have not attempted to publish specialized volumes, the present volume contains two somewhat related chapters (Chapters 4 and 5, on the role of amino acid neurotransmitters). The first three chapters examine three diverse approaches, each of current interest, in neurochemi- cal approaches to the molecular bases of neuronal and glial structure. B. W. Agranoff M. H. Accordingly, we describe only the main facts and concepts related to cyto- skeleton. Needless to say, selection and interpretation was influenced by the personal interests and opinions of the authors, although we attempted to be as fair as possible. We wished to familiarize the reader not only with well- established facts, but with current unsolved problems. Therefore, the words possibly, maybe, not known, and not clear are much more frequent in this text than in many others. In accordance with the style of the series, relatively short lists of addi- tional readings are given at the end of each chapter; these lists contain mostly the recent reviews and a few original papers describing certain phenomena in detail. Few references are cited in the text; these citations are given to help the reader find the source of certain new data and theories, which are not discussed at length in the reviews. In contrast, many well-established facts and widely known theories are not cited.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143608922385,"sku":"NLS9781468452808","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468452808.jpg?v=1757585225"},{"product_id":"lysosomes-book-eric-holtzman-9780306429668","title":"Lysosomes","description":"In 1976 I wrote a monograph on lysosomes (Lysosomes: A Survey, Springer- Verlag, Vienna) that was intended as an up-to-date, comprehensive survey. These lectures have been part of a general course on molecular biology for almost three decades, and they have undergone considerable evolution as knowledge has been pro gressing in this field. The progress continues, and readers should be prepared that some facts, statements, and ideas included in the book may be incomplete or out of-date. In any case, this is primarily a textbook, but not a comprehensive review. It provides a background of knowledge and current ideas in the field and gives ex amples of observations and their interpretations. I understand that some interpre tations and generalizations may be tentative or disputable, but I hope that this will stimulate thinking and discussing better than if I left white spots. The book has a prototype: it is my monograph \"Ribosome Structure and Pro tein Biosynthesis\" published by the Benjamin\/Cummings Publishing Company, Menlo Park, California, in 1986. Here I have basically kept the former order of pre sentation ofthe topics and the subdivision into chapters. The contents ofthe chap ters, however, have been significantly revised and supplemented. The newly writ ten chapters on translational control in prokaryotes (Chapter 16) and eukaryotes (Chapter 17) are added.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52430097645841,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52430098366737,"sku":"NLS9780306461460","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780306461460.jpg?v=1759168762"},{"product_id":"chloroplasts-book-j-kenneth-hoober-9780306416866","title":"Chloroplasts","description":"This monograph is intended to provide an overview of the structure, function, and development of the chloroplast. In keeping with an introductory approach, abbreviations generally have not been used, so that substance is not replaced by symbol. The principal aim has been to provide a teaching tool to introduce students to the major characteristics of the chloroplast, with as much emphasis on mech- anisms as possible at this level. It was written for students with an advanced college level education in biology and chemistry who also have some knowl- edge of biochemistry. The fundamentals of these subj ects cannot be included in a book of this type. Living systems are chemical systems, and the importance of understanding these systems at the molecular level cannot be overstated. Therefore, although attempts were made to keep the chemistry at a relatively simple level, occasionally statements are made that can be understood only with a sufficient background knowledge of chemistry.
