As the Age of Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution and the subsequent global expansion of the European nations transformed the world, Japan chose isolation and stagnation. A major reason for this policy decision was military weakness. The Tokugawa army under Ieyasu had been numerically large, experienced, and well equipped, but since then, things had changed. Having defeated their enemies early in the century, the shogunate warriors settled down in castle towns. Many Tokugawa retainers settled permanently in Edo, where they soon lost the military edge they had once enjoyed. After 1615, the shôgun's soldiers were no longer needed for war. Technically there was no demobilization, however, with no more wars to fight, the shôgun's soldiers became townsmen in all but name. They retained samurai status but were no longer called up to fight. Yet, a Tokugawa army of sorts still existed. Volume Two continues the examination of the Edo period and the evolution of the Samurai class into a verity of new roles. No longer required to fight, many Samurai firstly discarded their distinctive armor and then their training. As a result, a transformation from warrior to townsman took place. New careers were adopted, with many becoming part of the respected Firewatch or police force. Prince Gabriel Bethlen (1613- 1629) implemented several military reforms that strengthened the professional elements of the Transylvanian army, and he recruited a regiment of German infantry that was kept in service for several decades. The traditional components of the Transylvanian army, such as the Nobility, the Székely and Saxon levies were maintained but their importance was reduced. George Rákóczi I (1630-1648), continued this policy and fought in the Thirty Years' War as an ally of Sweden and of France. These two rulers had transformed Transylvania into a regional power while still ensuring peace and prosperity inside the country. In 1657 Prince George Rákóczi II, attempted an ambitious military and diplomatic venture by attempting to take the throne of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He had a strong army at his disposal; he secured alliances with Sweden, the Cossacks, Moldavia and Wallachia, but it was not enough. The campaign was a military disaster and most of the Transylvanian army was captured by the Tartars. In the meantime the Ottoman Sultan organized a punishment campaign that devastated the whole of Transylvania. In addition, in 1660, Transylvania lost its most important fortification on the Western frontier - the fortress of Oradea. The last decades of the autonomous Principality of Transylvania were marked by desperate efforts for survival under the constant pressure of neighboring empires. From a military point of view the focus shifted to organizing a defensive chain of fortifications provided with permanent garrisons and well supplied with modern weapons. This was not enough to stop the eastern expansion of the Habsburgs who managed, in a few years (1686-1690), to completely occupy Transylvania through shrewd diplomacy and a little military effort. The first chapter of this book offers a broad overview of the history of Transylvania and its rulers in the seventeenth century. The most important political events are presented in connection with social, economic and military developments. In this they showed similarities with the various European armies of the time. The Portuguese colonial troops in southern China proved no obstacle to Qing conquests.Perhaps the clearest indication of the versatility of the Qing military system was its successful containment of the very active Russian expansion then underway. The two treaties of Nerchinsk in 1689 and Kyakhta in 1727 delimited the Manchu-Russian border exactly where the Manchus wanted it to be, and the border selected by the Manchus remained unchallenged until the second half of the nineteenth century. The Lostwithiel campaign in Cornwall in 1644 took both King Charles''s and the Parliament''s armies on a lengthy trek to the furthest extent of England: Simon Marsh examines the disastrous consequences of the campaign on the Earl of Essex''s army, nearly destroyed as a fighting force, and yet how within two months it was able to recover and fight with distinction against the King''s forces at the Second Battle of Newbury. Mr Marsh also examines how effective the Parliamentarian supply system had become by 1644; logistics are critical to the survival of any army or any body of people in a defensive situation, and Rachael Abbiss takes us forward to the Indian War of 1688, to remind us that whilst the British Isles only underwent short periods of internal warfare, its colonies in North America permanently required armed defence and the vast cross-ocean administration that entailed. Given the comparatively small European populations in the colonies at the time, and the continual threat from both hostile locals and European colonial rivals such as France, warfare was no distant event but a daily issue of personal survival; back in England, however, the necessity of soldiering for your country was perhaps not felt as keenly, and many men avoided it: Stephen Ede-Borrett''s paper examines deserters'' notices in the London Gazette in the 1660s-1690s, published by the authorities in an attempt to retrieve missing recruits. These advertisements give us an extraordinary amount of information about the men who made up the rank and file of the British Army at the time. Where men did see out their service, however, their families had to decide whether to follow the army or remain at home: using archival evidence, Laurence Spring looks at the experience of soldiers'' wives in Britain and Europe during the first half of the seventeenth century, both those who stayed, and those who took to the road. After initial victories in battle, the Imperialist army reached Buda. Ignoring the opinion of the only really qualified commander present, Ernst Rudiger von Starhemberg, political generals under Louis of Baden pushed through a decision to attack the fortress, expecting to take it in days, although their army had insufficient infantry, artillery and engineers for a siege. Days turned into months, with growing casualties and no prospect of success; the arrival of significant reinforcements under Elector Maximilian Emanuel of Bavaria should have helped, but he started a fresh attack against the strongest part of the defences. The Christian army eventually retreated with a death-toll of 23,000. Alongside the main campaign, the Imperialists operated smaller flanking armies that achieved minor successes: fighting the Hungarian rebels under Imre Thököly, and descending the River Drave to threaten the Ottoman lines of supply towards Buda. The book describes the opposing forces: the Imperialist and Bavarian armies on the Christian side and their Ottoman opponents, briefly since these are well-known and covered in other Helion publications, and in more detail the lesser-known Hungarians. It also includes summaries of the other theatres of war: the Polish (a failed campaign) and Venetian (a good start). The account of the siege itself is based on contemporary reports, and the published correspondence of Starhemberg, set against the more famous but partisan account of the Baden party. Reports of the famous Italian soldier-scholar Marsigli are also used, though he does not come out well. Two published sources cover the Ottoman side: a Hungarian diary from within the siege and a translation of the detailed account of the contemporary Ottoman chronicler 'Silahdar'. A serious effort has been made to represent the Hungarian point of view, particularly of loyalists rather than that of the rebel warlord Thököly; this was the last time an 'independent' contribution was made by Hungarians to the liberation of their own country. Despite the failure, Vienna remained committed to the war, and real progress in the reconquest of Hungary would begin in 1685.
