Linguists from many scientific fields must be grateful to him for his pioneering work.» (Adriano V. Rossi, Professor Emeritus of Iranian Philology, DAAM, University of Naples L’Orientale and ISMEO, Rome) «The author has created a truly remarkable work on a very strange and little studied area of linguistics. The book contains a wealth of fascinating information and I can only congratulate him on the care and assiduity which he has devoted to it.» (Nicholas Sims-Williams, Professor Emeritus of Iranian and Central Asian Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London) «I had an occasion to look again at your Dictionary of Reduplication. I realized once again how much useful work you have put into compiling it. Your bibliography is comprehensive and very useful. I should like to congratulate you on your assiduous effort to investigate so comprehensively a complex morphological aspect of the Middle Eastern Languages.» († Ehsan Yarshater, Professor Emeritus, Center for Iranian Studies, Columbia University) The present dictionary is an analytical, comparative and etymological presentation of reduplication over a wide spectrum of languages. The range of featured languages – Arabic, Armenian, Kurdish, Persian and Turkish – include three separate families connected only by geographical proximity, each with an extremely rich literary tradition. The dictionary covers multiple independent phenomena in several unrelated languages, the underlying idea being that their reduplications are all somehow connected, and that there exists a general «field» of reduplication. The book is not limited to a single field, but rather for several largely separate ones, such as linguistic relations, the theory of reduplication and etymology. Several other related or unrelated languages such as Icelandic, Japanese, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Hittite, etc. have been included for comparative purposes. The preliminary findings of this study indicate that reduplication in the languages under study, and in nearly all other languages, deal mostly with the fundamental, primary human requirements. Another strong proof of the «universality» of reduplicates are that they closely follow the same and similar formation, development and rule in most related and unrelated languages. In consequence of the universality of reduplication and its near identical development in all related or unrelated languages, it even legitimizes the creation of a grammar of reduplication in the future. A few of the essential features of this book include: a complete revision and updating of the semantics; a particular attention to the cognitive aspects; and, many etymologies that cannot be found elsewhere.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52085226963217,"sku":"NGR9781800799660","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52686335312145,"sku":"NLS9781800799660","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800799660.jpg?v=1756815637"},{"product_id":"sourcing-the-self-book-kathy-pitt-9783039113989","title":"Sourcing the Self","description":"Social constructionists argue that our inner selves and our actions in the world are socially produced. Meta-realists, on the other hand, say that human consciousness is stratified, and not socially shaped at all levels. How do the human acts of creativity and resistance illuminate these different perspectives on human consciousness? This book explores theories of self and agency through a critical discourse analysis of the accounts of five British artists talking about their motivations, their creative processes and their experiences of the practices and institutions of visual art. Throughout the analysis the author considers how we voice dimensions of being that are 'beyond' language, and how these words impact on our sense of self and actions. The concept of self realisation is at the centre of this book and is critically examined. The analysis also explores the construction of social identities through family relations and institutional art practices and the media. It shows how they can provide solidarity for those who risk breaking social norms, but at the same time build barriers of difference.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138192765201,"sku":"NLS9783039113989","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783039113989.jpg?v=1757561355"},{"product_id":"university-of-basrah-studies-in-english-book-jinan-fedhil-al-hajaj-9783039113255","title":"University of Basrah Studies in English","description":"These papers represent a cross-section of the research work conducted in the Department of English of the College of Education at the University of Basrah, Basra, Iraq. Based on an experimental study of almost 400 zero-argument passives she convincingly shows that this allegedly \"exceptional\" passive is the very core from which all werden-passives in their meaning as \"event-focused action\" are derived.» (Petra M. Vogel, Professor of German Linguistics, University of Siegen, Germany) «This book presents a vast amount of original data to confront a glaring weakness of the aspect analysis of the German passive: if the actional passive is telic, why is the impersonal passive of the type Es wurde getanzt atelic? The answer given is a revelation delightful in its simplicity.» (Dr Christopher Beedham, Honorary Lecturer, Department of German, University of St Andrews, Scotland) Actional passives are conventionally considered to be the result of a voice analysis conversion process. They are said to derive from semantically identical underlying actives, even though most passives do not contain the agent – the entity carrying out the action – that would be crucial to such a conversion. Beedham’s aspect analysis offered an alternative perspective which discarded any notion of a mandatory connection to the active, and instead proposed that passive formation requires only a lexically telic verb, compositional telicity and a patient (affected entity) subject. This book challenges both these analyses via an empirical investigation into the somewhat neglected impersonal passive in German of the type Es wurde getanzt, which, as a zero-argument, atelic construction, exists as an exception to both the voice and aspect analysis rules. Using the theoretical framework of Saussurean structuralism and Beedham’s «method of exceptions and their correlations», this book presents a new, «event-focused» analysis of both this impersonal passive and the German actional passive in general; plus, it proposes that since Es wurde getanzt, as the barest form of passive and the closest realisation of the werden + ge-V-t core of all passives, is atelic, this werden-passive core too is atelic.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52234003251473,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52234007150865,"sku":"NLS9781800798496","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800798496.jpg?v=1757802630"},{"product_id":"digital-communication-linguistic-diversity-and-education-book-sender-dovchin-9781789974546","title":"Digital Communication, Linguistic Diversity and Education","description":"This edited volume investigates the role of digital communication in relation to linguistic diversity and language education in today's digitally networked world. Its approach is holistic, and focuses on dynamic, interactive systems and the interrelationships between the object of study and its context. The author demonstrates how adopting such an ecological perspective fundamentally changes our understanding of human language, and calls into question a number of assumptions: that language is rule-governed, for example, or that it represents a distinctive form of knowledge. From an ecological point of view, language is inseparable from all expressions of human sociality, such as communication, culture, and community. Arising from this perspective are key concepts, such as patterning, predictability, and creativity, which the author suggests as the basis of a very different approach to linguistics. Linguists, along with everyone interested in the many facets of meaningful human behaviour, will find the ideas presented here both stimulating and challenging. Furthermore, an ecological framework supersedes the distinction between theoretical and applied linguistics, and the book is specifically addressed to language practitioners of all kinds, for whom an ecological view of language is particularly relevant.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52452051976465,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52452052599057,"sku":"NLS9783039100545","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783039100545.jpg?v=1759363438"},{"product_id":"meanings-at-the-text-level-book-thanh-nyan-9783039102501","title":"Meanings at the Text Level","description":"If language and the brain are co-evolved and language as a latecomer can avail itself of pre-existing means to solve its own problems, then it should be possible to describe it in terms of processing strategies and constraints arising from brain systems. Is there a clear parallel between these problems and those faced by brain systems? What solutions have been evolved to cater for the latter, which could have been co-opted by language? How can the same form express polar opposite meanings? This study of the adjectival passive reconciles the contradiction using Christopher Beedham’s aspect analysis of the passive, in which the so-called actional passive (verbal passive) is said to express an action and its resultant state.   　   In the study, the author presented approximately one thousand 2nd participles, mainly from transitive verbs, to three native speaker informants in putative noun phrases such as an accepted practice and putative clauses with un-, such as It is unaccepted, and asked the informants to say if they are grammatical, ungrammatical or borderline. She also interrogated her participles in the British National Corpus for their adjectival properties. In this way, she arrived at five adjective-like properties which a 2nd participle can have. Finally, she put her participles into eight groups, ranging from «0% state, 100% action» to «50% state, 50% action», depending on how many and which of the five adjective-like properties they can exhibit. The result is a new gradient scale of adjectival passives.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454145425681,"sku":"NLS9781800795242","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800795242.jpg?v=1759370252"},{"product_id":"historical-lacunae-and-poetic-space-book-beverliey-braune-9781800795440","title":"Historical Lacunae and Poetic Space","description":"This book explores the nature of poetic reading using a creative approach to understanding Old Norse poetry. It considers lacunae in the history, criticism and scholarly translations of Old Norse poetry into English through a poetic enactment, an epic poem and its companion reader, demonstrating critical approaches to Old Norse poetry and poetics. The poetic enactment analyses the complex relationship between historical gap and creative reader, the importance of the comprehension of literary objects as ideal or immutable, and the poetic construction of readable texts with particular reference to skaldic images. The poetic demonstration of scholarly approaches also raises a number of questions about poetic process and the role of composers, readers and historical contexts in Old Norse poetry. Analysing narrative-movement, diction, grammar, legend, the aural, the visual, authenticity, meaning and poetic objects as scripts, the author offers a theory of actual and virtual reading.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52454157582609,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454158205201,"sku":"NLS9781800795440","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800795440.jpg?v=1759370293"},{"product_id":"researching-intertextual-reading-book-stephen-bax-9783034307697","title":"Researching Intertextual Reading","description":"Intertextuality in reading - the way in which written texts refer to other texts - has recently attracted attention in the field of linguistics and related disciplines. Dynamic Linguistics approaches the description of the complex phenomenon that is human language by focusing on this important but often neglected aspect. This book charts the belated recognition of the importance of dynamic synchrony in twentieth-century linguistics and discusses two other key concepts in some detail: speech community and language structure. Because of their vital role in the development of a dynamic approach to linguistics, the three linguists William Labov, André Martinet and Roman Jakobson are featured, in particular Martinet in whose later writings – neglected in the English-speaking world – the fullest appreciation of the dynamics of language to date are found. A sustained attempt is also made to chronicle precursors, between the nineteenth century and the 1970s, who provided inspiration for these three scholars in the development of a dynamic approach to linguistic description and analysis. The dynamic approach to linguistics is intended to help consolidate functional structuralists, geolinguists, sociolinguists and all other empirically minded linguists within a broader theoretical framework as well as playing a part in reversing the overformalism of the simplistic structuralist framework which has dominated, and continues to dominate, present-day linguistic description.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52486340378897,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52486341558545,"sku":"NLS9783034317054","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034317054.jpg?v=1759859089"},{"product_id":"perception-and-acquisition-of-chinese-polysemy-book-haiyan-liang-9781803742786","title":"The Perception and Acquisition of Chinese Polysemy","description":"Polysemous lexical items have multiple senses associated with a single form, and these senses are interrelated. Existing studies on the issue of polysemy in language acquisition often rely on researchers’ subjective understandings of the network of meanings around a lexical item or focus on English examples. This book takes one Chinese polysemous item as an example to explore how native (L1) speakers and L2 learners perceive its multiple senses as well as how these senses are acquired by L2 learners. The book outlines some points of cultural divergence which may have influenced the direction and the extent of the learners’ pragmatic development. It also sheds light on the language-acquisition strategies utilised by the learners during their tenure in the host culture. Specific areas of language have repeatedly been found to remain problematic even at advanced levels, and much empirical research has been carried out. In particular, areas of grammar such as the tense or agreement systems often pose difficulties, as well as lexical idiosyncrasies such as formulaic sequences, and the discourse\/pragmatic constraints operating in French. The chronological development of the Breton orthographical debates during the twentieth century is charted along with an attempt to discern the ideological, political and personal motivations which lay behind those debates. Based on a substantial corpus of hitherto unpublished original documents and personal interviews, the research throws new light on the nature of the political, ideological and linguistic divisions of the Breton movement of that period (not least the events that occurred during the 1939-45 war). The historical and societal background of the language is succinctly delineated and points of orthographical contention are discussed, each in turn, so that their correlation to the spoken varieties of Breton can be judged by the reader. This book presents a thorough investigation of the foreign component of the Cypriot lexis. It traces, firstly, the relevant socio-cultural factors that gave rise to it. It presents, secondly, a detailed account of how words from sources as diverse as Romance, Arabic, Turkish and English became fully nativised and indistinguishable from the native stock. A fresh case study of language contact and lexical borrowing, it addresses such issues as the extent of lexical borrowing, the types of vocabulary borrowed, the relationship between the social integration and the structural adaptation of loans, and the degree and predictability of the phonological, morphological and even semantic modification affecting foreign words.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52686314209553,"sku":"NLS9783039105267","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783039105267.jpg?v=1762327735"},{"product_id":"dictionary-of-cameroon-english-usage-book-jean-paul-kouega-9783039110278","title":"A Dictionary of Cameroon English Usage","description":"This book initiates the process of codification of a postcolonial variety of English, namely Cameroon English. It focuses on the present-day lexicon of this non-native variety of English. English has been in use in this territory for a long period of time and over the years, it has developed some characteristic lexical features which have not as yet been described fully. Previous researchers have been regarding linguistic innovations as cases of lexical errors or Cameroonisms; as a result, teachers and language purists have been discouraging their usage. Today, it is obvious that these innovations have come to stay; they are specific to Cameroon and therefore constitute Cameroon's contribution to the development of world language English.\u003cbr\u003e The book is divided into two parts. Part One gives background information on Cameroon (physical and human geography, economy and geopolitics), the language situation in Cameroon (ancestral and vehicular languages, major lingua francas and official languages) and the linguistic features of English in Cameroon (phonology, grammar and lexicology). Part Two describes the research design (textual material, method of data collection and informants) and provides a lexicographic description (spelling, word formative process, definition) of characteristic Cameroon English lexemes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52686646378769,"sku":"NLS9783039110278","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783039110278.jpg?v=1762328530"},{"product_id":"building-up-aspect-book-maria-stambolieva-9783039105588","title":"Building Up Aspect","description":"This book addresses the problems of the nature of the category of aspect, its formal expression and its relation to Action modes, to the Aorist\/Imperfect and Perfect\/Non-Perfect distinctions. The discussion is largely based on data from Bulgarian – a Slavonic language where aspect as a grammatical category systematically coexists not only with verbal prefixation, but also with temporal boundedness, correlation and, in the nominal sphere, definiteness. Cross-language parallels with English and French data and the mapping of Bulgarian structures to notions drawn from the «western» tradition of aspectual study result in the outline of a framework for an integrated study of the expression of aspectuality in languages belonging to different language groups. Refuting existing views of aspect as a «compensatory» phenomenon for nominal definiteness, the book presents arguments in favour of a systematic relation between verbal prefixation and NP quantification in Slavonic languages and of a compositional, syntactic dimension of aspectual analysis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52687362490641,"sku":"NLS9783039105588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783039105588.jpg?v=1762330276"},{"product_id":"production-and-perception-of-thematic-contrast-in-german-book-bettina-braun-9783039105663","title":"Production and Perception of Thematic Contrast in German","description":"Variations in speech melody (intonation) can be used to express different meanings (e.g. question vs. statement, friendliness). Yet, intonational information is hardly used in presentday linguistic models. When intonational information is used, it is mostly based on introspection rather than on empirical investigation; almost exclusively, a one-to-one relation between accent types and semantic function is assumed. This book focuses on an empirical investigation of thematic contrast in German. Thematic contrast has received considerable attention in semantics because sentences with contrastive themes can be used to imply propositions of various kinds without saying them explicitly. In this book, first an acoustic comparison between sentences produced in contrastive and non-contrastive contexts is described. Intonational realisation is quantified in terms of the height and position of tonal targets. The perceptual reality of different productions and the relevance of different accoustic cues are tested by means of rating experiments. Finally, the data are prosodically annotated by a group of linguists to explore the validity and explanatory power of different accent categories for contrastive and non-contrastive themes in German.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52687418327313,"sku":"NLS9783039105663","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783039105663.jpg?v=1762330419"},{"product_id":"academic-style-proofreading-book-roxanne-barbara-doerr-9781800797307","title":"Academic Style Proofreading","description":"«The contribution of Dr Doerr’s book is beyond measure. Her research relies on highly sophisticated methodology with invaluable practical applications in academic style editing for scholars who are non-native speakers of English. Academic Style Proofreading stands to become vital for readers from across the globe engaged in scholarly publication.» (John Casey Gooch, Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Literature, University of Texas at Dallas, USA) «This book explicates the roles of hybridised professions in academic publishing and offers a fresh and thought-provoking corpus stylistics analysis of academic style proofreading. The author starts an important and timely conversation about explanations and treatment of academic style in the spirit of moving towards a more inclusive international academic discourse community. Its insights will be an invaluable resource to academics and publishing professionals alike.» (Karen Dwyer, PhD, Lecturer (Teaching) in Modern English Grammar and Research Methodology, University College London) In the current international context, it is increasingly required to write not only «correctly» but also in accordance with the stylistic expectations of the academic community. However, because academic style and its standards are only mentioned – if not glossed over – in textbooks and journal guidelines, many non-native students and scholars receive their linguistically correct papers with recommendations to «revise the English» but are unable to comprehend where the problem lies or how to address it. Moreover, change in and confusion among the language professionals who are in a position to assist these scholars – that is, revisors, copyeditors and proofreaders – impedes any clarity in terms of who should rework academic style before submission and publication. This volume seeks to unpack the concept of «academic style proofreading» and its components through a multifaceted analysis including methodologies such as terminology, corpus stylistics and error analysis. This is intended to define the purpose and intricacies of this new aspect of academic writing and present common errors in academic style, as well as possible proofreading solutions, in economics and the humanities. In doing so, the book presents an assessment of the issues, methods and implications of academic style proofreading for research, professional and educational purposes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52689623023889,"sku":"NLS9781800797307","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800797307.jpg?v=1762335833"},{"product_id":"chinese-learners-and-the-lexis-learning-rainbow-book-peiling-xing-9783039114078","title":"Chinese Learners and the Lexis Learning Rainbow","description":"This book focuses on vocabulary acquisition in the areas of English language learning either in a foreign or a second language environment. Starting from the social phenomenon that a large number of Mainland Chinese students obtain their further education in Western universities, the author carries out a longitudinal study by using instruments of vocabulary levels tests, questionnaires and interviews. On the basis of an in-depth investigation of vocabulary strategy usage by Chinese learners in widely differing environments, the author develops a model of vocabulary acquisition. This is the first model to combine both linguistic and non-linguistic strategies, motivation, and the stages of vocabulary learning into one comprehensive representation of vocabulary acquisition. The book not only offers a solid data base but also suggests effective strategies to enhance English language teaching and learning.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52820275986705,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52820277068049,"sku":"NLS9783039114078","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783039114078.jpg?v=1764329654"},{"product_id":"rules-and-exceptions-book-christopher-beedham-9783034307826","title":"Rules and Exceptions","description":"This edited collection explores an area of linguistics referred to as the method of exceptions and their correlations. Interdisciplinarity is understood here as how language expresses the discourse and lexis of specialised knowledge in science, technology and the professions. Language helps in the creation of these different fields and constitutes a strategic tool that, if harnessed correctly, will facilitate competitiveness on an international level in order to boost technological, scientific, economic and educational growth. Interdisciplinarity, language and ICTs should be taken into account to address the real needs of industry, commerce and translation in educational institutions and the professions. The contributions in this volume address themes that are crucial to the demands of modern society: intercultural business communications, one of the most challenging areas of specialised discourse and commerce; ICT and specialised translation, a current issue of the utmost relevance; terminology applied to translation; language acquisition in virtual environments; training interpreters through ICT; exploring the commercial needs of language industries; corpus-based research and ICT applications in specialised dictionaries; university e-learning courses; and the state of research on specialised languages in Latin America.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52820633714961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52820634894609,"sku":"NLS9783034302838","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034302838.jpg?v=1764330333"},{"product_id":"some-ethnolinguistic-notes-on-polar-eskimo-book-stephen-pax-leonard-9783034319478","title":"Some Ethnolinguistic Notes on Polar Eskimo","description":"This book serves as an insightful ethnographic introduction to the language and oral traditions of the Inugguit, a sub-group of the Inuit who live in north-west Greenland.
