It presents itself less as an intellectual biography than as a series of explorative readings of his work. These readings attempt to trace out the various problematics with which Takeuchi was engaged throughout his career, with particular emphasis given to the notions of modernity, subjectivity and alterity. In all cases, an effort was made to do justice to the difficult notion of \"resistance,\" for which Takeuchi is perhaps most well-known. We have argued that what Takeuchi refers to as \"Oriental resistance\" against the West is in fact reflective of a more comprehensive notion of resistance, one that may be understood along the lines of the ultimate impossibility of conceptual knowledge. This impossibility is for Takeuchi essentially linked to a privileging of historical singularity over subjective identity, and with this a shift in emphasis from activity to passivity. We have sought throughout the work to draw out the complexity of Takeuchi's thought, and in this way bring forth not only the important possibilities that inhere within it but as well what we consider to be at times its insufficiencies, or limits.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49655237050641,"sku":"GOR013215297","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51054750236945,"sku":"NIN9781885445209","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1885445202.jpg?v=1757415809"},{"product_id":"variations-book-su-young-kim-9781885445100","title":"Variations","description":"This book showcases the work of three major Korean poets born at fourteen-year intervals, in 1921, 1935, and 1949. Her most representative early work, the 1987 Wonmi-dong saramdeul, is available in English as A Distant and Beautiful Place. In the 1990s her writing took an increasingly personal turn with a series of popular works including Contradictions (Mosun), South Korea's best-selling novel in 1998. Contradictions is a coming-of-age tale that explores the paradoxes and contradictions of the human condition and delves into the meaning of personal happiness. The book opens with a moment of epiphany as the main character An Jin-jin awakens to the realization that her entire energy must be devoted to her own life. She struggles over whom to marry with an awareness of consequences gleaned from seeing the divergence in the lives of twin sisters—her mother and her aunt. A host of binary oppositions is also presented in the lives of the men around her: a wannabe gang boss brother, an Ivy League cousin, an alcoholic schizophrenic father, a steadfast but rigid uncle, and her two suitors. Yang skillfully develops these characters in increasingly complex threads as the novel unfolds in a series of surprises.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52602002014481,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52602002112785,"sku":"GOR014558369","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781885445261.jpg?v=1762595459"},{"product_id":"backed-against-the-sea-book-wen-hsing-wang-9780939657674","title":"Backed Against the Sea","description":"Written as the ludicrous and disturbing ramblings of an errant, pseudo-intellectual urbanite secluding himself from the underworld in an impoverished coastal village of Taiwan in the early 1960s, this novel prompted the first critical discussion of postmodernism in Chinese fiction and still stands as the most provocative and innovative narrative published in Taiwan over the past two decades.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52740534829329,"sku":"NIN9780939657674","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780939657674.jpg?v=1763483880"},{"product_id":"charisma-and-community-formation-in-medieval-japan-book-s-a-thornton-9781885445025","title":"Charisma and Community Formation in Medieval Japan","description":"The Yugyō-ha achieved success by basing its religious authority on a combination of Pure Land mysticism and the practices of fundraising hijiri. Between 1300 and 1700, the Pure Land Buddhist religious order known as the Ippen school Yugyō-ha (later the Jishu) established itself as the leading representative of nembutsu propagation in Japan. The theme of the order's history is the development of religious authority as a result of the struggle to normalize relations among the official head, sometimes obstreperous religious, and often interfering (usually warrior) lay patrons. This study demonstrates the value of the articulation in organizational studies of Weber's concept of charisma as a successful social relationship as well as that of a chosen career determined by culture and tradition. Indeed, the success of the Yugyō-ha was due to its ability to seize on the advantages of combining the principles and practices of two existing traditions, Pure Land mysticism and the fundraising hijiri movement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52755943588113,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52755944571153,"sku":"NIN9781885445025","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781885445025.jpg?v=1763574861"},{"product_id":"land-of-volcanic-ash-book-sakae-kubo-9780939657834","title":"Land of Volcanic Ash","description":"Kubo Sakae's Land of Volcanic Ash (Kazanbaichi) is recognized as the major socialist realist drama of pre-war Japan. The plays focus on living characters rather than spirits or ghosts, and on dramatic action rather than poetry, song and dance. In addition the five noh satisfy several of the most important features of Aristotle's definition of good tragedy. That is, they all have plot, which Aristotle says in his Poetics is the imitation of action. The plot centers on characters who are related to each other or are a part of the same household. In each plot, a fatal or harmful event is either enacted or threatened, and there is an unexpected change in the direction of the action. In Shun'ei, a father, visited by his son, is pardoned from a death sentence; in Dampu, a son visits his father, who is then executed, and upon avenging his father's death, unexpectedly escapes the killer's henchmen; in Shichikiochi and Nakamitsu, a son thought to have been killed turns up alive, much to the amazement of his father; and finally, in Nishikido, a brother turns on his own brother and attacks with military force. This volume is intended to provide the reader with a translation of noh plays that either have not been previously translated into English or have not been translated for a long time. The translations are as faithful as possible to the original Japanese so that the reader can gain a close glimpse of the language and action of this particular type of noh. It is a noh filled with action compared to many that have been translated, a noh that appealed to the public at large during the medieval period. Up to now, the answer to this question has generally eluded scholars who, for lack of nonofficial sources, have fallen back on Communist governments' official explanations. But the essays in this volume confirm that, at least in the case of the Communist revolution in China, it is finally possible to make new and fresh interpretations. By focusing closely on individuals and probing deeply into their thinking and experience, the authors of these essays have discovered a wide range of reasons for why Chinese capitalists did or did not choose to live and work under communism. The contributors to this volume have all concentrated on the dilemma for capitalists in China's Communist revolution. But their approach to their subject through archival research and rigorous analysis may also serve as a guide for future thinking about a variety of other historical figures. This approach is well worth adopting to explain how any members of society (not only capitalists) have resolved comparable dilemmas in all revolutions—the ones in China, Russia, Vietnam, Cuba, or anywhere else.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53482100162833,"sku":"GOR014941994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53482932502801,"sku":"GOR014942620","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781939161727.jpg?v=1777574605"},{"product_id":"endless-war-book-wen-hsing-wang-9781933947280","title":"Endless War","description":"This volume consists of translations of twenty-four fictional works and five essays by Wang Wen-Hsing, plus a dedicated author's preface. Wang is one of the most celebrated modernist writers in Taiwan and the recipient of Taiwan's most prestigious National Culture and Arts Award (Literature Category). This anthology brings to English readers excellent works written in the earlier period of Wang's writing career; most of the works are published for the first time in English. This book is an important introduction not only toward understanding Wang's writings in particular, but also to understanding Taiwan modernist literature in general.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53567544918289,"sku":"NGR9781933947280","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781933947280.jpg?v=1779104146"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/cornell-east-asia-series-book-series.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
