Language as a means of expressing as well as evoking both interiority and community has been in the focus of these discussions, led among linguists, anthropologists, and Egyptologists, and leading to a collection of essays that provide studies that transcend previously considered approaches. Its contributions are in particular interested in understanding how the attitude of the individual towards societal processes and strategies of norming is negotiated emotionally, and how individual interests and attitudes can be articulated. Discourses on public spaces are in the focus, in order to analyse those strategies that are employed to articulate dissent (for example, in the sense of face-threatening acts). This raises a number of questions on the spatial and public situatedness of emotions and language: How is the public space dealt with and reflected in language as property, heritage, and as a part of ascribed identities? Which role do emotions play in this space? How is emotion employed there as part of place making in relation to identity constructions? What is the connection between emotion, performance and emblematic spaces and places? Which opportunities of the violation of norms and transgression do such public spaces offer to actors and speakers? These questions intend to address the communicative representation of core cultural processes and concepts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736930001169,"sku":"NGR9789027244550","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9027244553.jpg?v=1751286299"},{"product_id":"ute-dictionary-book-t-givn-9789027202994","title":"Ute Dictionary","description":"This third volume of our Ute language collection contains the Ute dictionary. It opens with several introductory chapters that link the dictionary to our Ute Reference Grammar (2011) and explain the structure and use of the dictionary. The bulk of the information on the meaning and usage of Ute words is then given in the Ute-English part. The English-Ute part, next, serves primarily as a search-and-reference tool. A short section on traditional semantic-cultural fields follows. Ute is a Northern Uto-Aztecan language of the Numic sub-family. Together with its northern dialects (Southern Paiute, Uintah, White River), it should be considered a single language, Núuchi (\"of the people\") or Núu-'apaghapi (\"the people's speech\"). While our work was done primarily in the southern dialects (Southern Ute, Ute Mountain, Uncompaghre), we have included as many words as could be safely extracted from Powel's and Smith's work on the northern dialects, as well as some from Sapir's work (1931) on Northern Ute, adjusting them to Southern-dialect pronunciation. This brings the work as close as one could hope, at this time, to a comprehensive all-Ute dictionary, a task that yet remains to be done. We have tried to emphasize in the Ute-English entries the historical and derivational connectivity of Ute vocabulary and its gradual growth and expansion. This is also underscored in the introductory chapter on word derivation. While this work remains incomplete, we hope it can be some day expanded into an all-inclusive Ute dictionary, and will help the people – Núuchiu – preserve their language and culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50420495286545,"sku":"CIN9027202990VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9027202990.jpg?v=1750872548"},{"product_id":"emancipatory-pragmatics-book-yoko-fujii-9789027231482","title":"Emancipatory Pragmatics","description":"Emancipatory Pragmatics represents a unique contribution to the field of pragmatics. Most research in the field has focused on English and other Western languages, but the study of Japanese and other non-Western languages, as is done in this volume, has led to a broader understanding of language use. Here, thirteen articles each break new ground by discussing the application of ba theory to pragmatics research. Ba and basho, which are Japanese terms often translated as “field” or “context”, are central to expanding the theory of pragmatics to explain features not only of non-Western languages, but of all languages. By presenting an introduction to the perspective of Emancipatory Pragmatics, and discussing ba theory in detail, it becomes obvious that this is an innovative approach to questions relevant for the study of all languages. Thus, it is useful both for students new to the field, as well as for seasoned researchers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53005773799697,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53005774258449,"sku":"NGR9789027231482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789027231482.jpg?v=1767881267"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/culture-and-language-use-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
