The seminars focused on questions of language shift, language maintenance and language loyalty in these two countries and looked to find similarities and differences which might contribute to an understanding of the processes involved. Bernard Spolsky compares the linguistic choices made by Hebrew speakers in Israel and Maori speakers in New Zealand, and explores the phenomenon of the shift to Hebrew amongst early settlers in Palestine. Bernard Spolsky is Professor of English and director of the Language Policy Research Center at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, and is well-known for his many publications on second language acquisition. Muiris O Laoire, from the Irish Language Department, University College, Galway, Eire, draws out the parallels and contrasts between the situation of Irish and Hebrew at the turn of the century, and tries to account for the relative lack of success in intergenerational transmission. Both the papers and the debates which follow reveal how state language planning and the linguistic actions and decisions of the family network intermesh in complex ways. From these studies we see how similar policies may sometimes produce different outcomes, while different policies may result in similar conclusions. As a result, the ways in which language is transmitted across the generations remain difficult to predict accurately.

This volume deals with political speeches, particularly commemorative addresses, from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. In the main contribution, Hans G. Honig gives an outline of a functionalist approach to translation, for which the purpose of the target text is the most important criterion. Honig argues for self-confident translators whose decisive qualification is their knowledge of what texts are used for and how they achieve their effects. Various examples from real translations illustrate the arguments of a functionalist approach. Consequences for translator training are then discussed, with Honig differentiating between diagnosis and therapy. Different approaches to translation lead to different concepts of translation quality. This is obvious both in the debate and in the replies by Gunilla Anderman and Margaret Rogers, Peter Bush, Kirsten Malmkjr, Peter Newmark, and Mark Shuttleworth, who take a more or less critical stance towards a functionalist approach.

Michael Clyne is well placed to inform on linguistic and cultural diversity in Australia. The seminars covered a range of topics: recent developments in the Netherlands and the UK in the area of education and multiculturalism; the role of contact linguistics and the case of the European Union; the latest constitutional developments in Belgium together with their consequences in language terms. The book contains both the papers and the debates which followed. Ludo Beheydt explores why the linguistic groups which constitute the autochthonous Belgian population have a long tradition of conflict and antagonism and shows how the polarization between the two major groups led to the 1994 constitution which states that Belgium is now a Federal State with three linguistically defined communities. He teaches at the University Catholique de Louvain and is a well-known commentator on language policies in Belgium. Peter Nelde positions multilingualism within the framework of contact linguistic, relates this to solving or minimising conflicts and discusses the principles which are of major importance in this debate, namely territoriality and personality. He is director of the Onderzoekscentrum voor Meertaligheid in Brussels as well as visiting lecturer in the University of Leipzig. Sjaak Kroon and Ton Vallen show how patterns of immigration have caused the multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual nature of modern Dutch society to become an issue of central importance in the Netherlands. They are both members of the Research Group on Language and Minorities based at Tilburg University. Linda Thompson, a member of the Education Department at Durham University, in her response to Kroon and Vallen gives information on developments in education and multilingualism in Britain. Dennis Ager, Professor of Modern Languages Aston University, discusses some of the theoretical issues raised by the Kroon and Vallen paper.
In 1997, Hong Kong has the attention of the world as it moves from being one of the most liberal market economies to inclusion in one of the few remaining states which might be termed communist. The set of papers and debates in this volume derive from a conference that took place in Hong Kong one year before this changeover and in which the participants attempted to analyse the patterns of language use that prevailed in mid-1996 and to assess the linguistic changes that might accompany the political shift. This interest in recognising and predicting language change stems in part from a belief that language shifts are a useful barometer for societal change: they may reflect the extent of contact that is occurring between speakers; they are often an accurate indicator of a changing focus for group loyalty; they may bear witness to the pressure of economic or political forces. In the Hong Kong context the interesting question is whether this society will be able to manage the triglossia which it now plans. The world watches to see if China and Hong Kong can manage the one country, two systems solution agreed on by the UK and the PRC. Those interested in language will be watching to see if one country, two systems, three languages can be achieved.
ethnicity-in-eastern-europe-questions-of-migration-language-rights-and-education-book-sue-wright-9780585126029
Ethnicity in Eastern Europe: Questions of Migration, Language Rights and Education

The two colloquia which form this publication focus on a geographical area - Central and Eastern Europe. Special focus is given to the complex relationships of the Swedish language to both English and to indigenous and immigrant minority languages in Sweden. Key issues addressed include the current debate concerning Sweden's official majority and minority languages; the position of immigrant and indigenous languages in the Swedish school system, the influence of the spread of English on the use of Swedish, particularly in writing; and the role of Swedish within the European Union. The contributions synthesize research on the status of languages currently used in Sweden as well as policy initiatives, and taken together the papers accurately present the many sides of the complex debate taking place there. While this book focuses on one country's struggle for multilingualism, the issues presented here are highly relevant and accessible to all readers interested in linguistic rights and language policy.
This volume deals with Translation Research (TR) and Interpreting Research (IR). In the main contribution, Daniel Gile from the Université Lumière Lyon 2 (France) explores kinship, differences and prospects for partnership between the two. He gives an overview of the history of research into translation and interpreting, explores commonalities and reviews differences between translation and interpreting, and discusses implications for research. He comments critically on the foci and paradigms in both TR and IR and on the epistemological and methodological problems they raise. He concludes by saying that Translation and Interpreting Studies are gaining both social cohesion and some weight as an academic identity. The contributions by Jan Cambridge, Andrew Chesterman, Janet Fraser, Yves Gambier, Moira Inghilleri, Zuzana Jettmarová, Ian Mason, Mariana Orozco, Franz Pöchhacker and Miriam Shlesinger focus on translator and interpreter behaviour, research methodology, types of research, disciplinary autonomy and interdisciplinarity, theory and practice, research training, and institutional constraints. There is general agreement that in view of commonalities and differences between translation and interpreting, each step in the investigation of one can contribute valuable input towards investigation of the other.
https://www.worldofbooks.com/collections/current-issues-in-language-and-society-monographs-book-series.oembed
