The Darwin seminars at the LSE have beome a crucial intellectual forum in recent years, attended by leading scientists, social  scinetists, journalists, film makers, TV producers and writers as diverse as A.S.Byatt and Douglas Adams. Tapping into the most  exciting intellectual revolution of our times, they have presented cutting edge Darwinian ideas from a series of eminent speakers , including the famous, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, to less well known researchers at the cutting edge of  today's debates.  The series, Darwinism today, consists of a seres of short books, each drawing on the content of 1 of the seminars abd written by many of the leading figures in the Darwinian revolution, writing both on evolutionary ideas and on the applications of these ideas to a wide range of human behaviour.  Neanderthals, Bandits and farmers argues against the traditional view that agriculture began in the Middle East around 10,000  years ago. Colin Tudge goes back even further to a race of proto-farmers who may have ousted the hunter gathering Neanderthals.  The traditional view is that hunter gathering is hard and that farming made life easier. Colin Tudge turns this notion on it's  head.Farming is at least as hard, if not harder. In Genesis it is regarded as a necessary evil. So why did our ancestors make the change?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49517365690641,"sku":"GOR002122178","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50082130985233,"sku":"CIN0297842587VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50347815862545,"sku":"CIN0297842587G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50347864555793,"sku":"CIN0297842587A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50586138706193,"sku":"GOR008381931","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53192187543825,"sku":"GOR002781795","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0297842587.jpg?v=1751424834"},{"product_id":"truth-about-cinderella-book-martin-daly-9780297841616","title":"The Truth About Cinderella","description":"Based upon the Darwin seminars given at the LSE, this volume is one in a series of books drawing on the content of one of the seminars. Both rich and poor die younger in countries with the greatest inequalities in income. Countries like the United States with big gaps between rich and poor have higher death rates than those with smaller gaps such as Sweden and Japan. Why? In Mind the Gap, Richard Wilkinson provides a novel Darwinian approach to this question. He points out that inequality is new to our species: in our two-million-year history, human societies became hierarchical only about ten thousand years ago. Because our minds and bodies are adapted to a more egalitarian life, today's hierarchical structures may be considered unnatural. To people at the bottom of the heap, the world seems hostile and the stress is harmful. If you're not in control, you're at risk. This is a penetrating analysis of patterns of health and disease that has implications for social policy. Wilkinson concludes that rather than relying on more police, prisons, social workers or doctors, we must tackle the corrosive social effects of income differences at root. Darwinism Today series The application of Darwinian ideas to social and political thinking is one of the most controversial intellectual developments of our time, stirring up fierce debate among a wide range of people including scientists, social scientists, journalists, economists, psychiatrists, philosophers and lawyers. Darwinism Today is a series of short books that introduces readers to the cutting edge of these debates. Written by leading Darwinian scholars, the books show how issues as disparate as the nature of aggression and the definition of female beauty can be illuminated in unexpected ways by recent advances in evolutionary biology, and reveal the implications of such findings for society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49668528701713,"sku":"GOR002903961","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53200589259025,"sku":"GOR007620175","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0297646486.jpg?v=1751227900"},{"product_id":"warrior-lovers-book-donald-symon-9780297647010","title":"Warrior Lovers","description":"Romance novels and pornography are multi-billion-dollar global industries. This book explores how the stark contrasts between these erotic genres reflect the very different selection pressures that forged women's and men's sexual psychologies during human evolutionary history. In particular, a new erotic sub-genre is analysed, written by and for women: 'slash fiction'. 'Slash' depicts romantic and sexual relationships between heterosexual males, fictional characters from television and film, such as Star Trek 's K\/S (Captain Kirk and Mr Spock) - the term 'slash' denoting the punctuation mark that unites the pair. The heroes of romance novels and slash fiction alike are 'warrior lovers' who embody the qualities that our female ancestors valued in a mate. But, whereas romance novel readers fantasize about being 'Mrs Warrior', slash fans prefer to fantasize about being a co-warrior.' By separating  the essential features of female erotic fantasy from the variable, the authors get to the heart of what women really want.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49913494896913,"sku":"CIN0297647016G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0297647016.jpg?v=1750877633"},{"product_id":"darwinian-left-book-peter-singer-9780297643364","title":"A Darwinian Left?","description":"The application of Darwinian ideas to social and political thinking is one of the most controversial intellectual developments of our time, stirring up fierce debate among a wide range of people including scientists, social scientists, journalists, economists, psychiatrists, philosophers and lawyers. Darwinism Today is a series of short books that introduces readers to the cutting edge of these debates. Written by leading Darwinian scholars, the books show how issues as disparate as the nature of aggression and the definition of female beauty can be illuminated in unexpected ways by recent advances in evolutionary biology, and reveal the implications of such findings for society. In A Darwinian Left Peter Singer looks at why the left-wing is so contemptuous of these biological theories of behaviour. If humans are indeed born cooperators as research suggests, why does the right claim Darwinism as its own? The author traces the history of this intellectual divide and concludes that it i s high time the left radically revised its outdated view of human nature. He shows how the insights of modern evolutionary theory can help to set realistic and realizable goals, reinvigorating left-wing thinking for the next millennium. This is a new vision of the political left from one of the leading moral philosophers of our time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50224889921809,"sku":"GOR001769866","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50445599703313,"sku":"GOR010704174","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50936102093073,"sku":"GOR004878917","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0297643363.jpg?v=1750738163"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/darwinism-today-s-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
