Extant in thirty-nine manuscripts and fragments, the Lectionary presents a liturgically organised set of readings, based on the Latin readings of the Use of Sarum. Most of these translations derive from the books of the Old Testament in the Wycliffite Bible (using both the Early Version and the Late Version). In addition, however, the Old Testament Lectionary also contains readings which were translated from the Sarum Missal independently, and which show striking differences to the early and late Wycliffite versions. The Old Testament Lectionary is therefore vitally important in understanding the textual tradition of the Wycliffite Bible as well as the organisation, methods, and motivation behind this major fourteenth-century scholarly translation project. The Old Testament Lectionary is not just a collection of extracts from the Bible but a continuous structured text. In the manuscripts, the readings are presented in the order of the liturgical year with rubrics, running titles indicating liturgical seasons, and a sophisticated system of cross-references for readings used on more than one liturgical occasion. This volume presents the first full edition of the Wycliffite Old Testament Lectionary, together with an introduction containing a complete list and description of all extant manuscripts (surviving from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries). The edition also contains a detailed analysis of textual and contextual features of the Old Testament Lectionary and its sources.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49512964292881,"sku":"GOR013651322","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50485644525841,"sku":"CIN0192847686G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51208288567569,"sku":"NIN9780192847683","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192847686.jpg?v=1751323777"},{"product_id":"gilte-legende-vol-i-book-richard-hamer-9780199205776","title":"Gilte Legende Vol I","description":"Gilte Legende is a translation (1438) of Jean de Vignay's Legende Doree, itself a translation of Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda Aurea which was one of the most widely copied, translated, and read books of the later Middle Ages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49550072381713,"sku":"GOR010561475","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199205779.jpg?v=1751195793"},{"product_id":"sidrak-and-bokkus-a-parallel-text-edition-volume-i-book-tl-burton-9780197223154","title":"Sidrak and Bokkus, A Parallel-text Edition: Volume I","description":"A previously unpublished fifteenth-century book of knowledge, written in verse in question-and-answer from and enclosed in a framing adventure story. Copied at Winchester Cathedral in 1487, it is only the third work by Petrarch to be translated into English and is the most accurate and extensive translation from his work before the 1530s. It offers an insight into early English responses to humanist learning, with its balance of classical and religious ideas, and to the cosmopolitan and urbane taste of fifteenth-century English churchmen in the century before the Reformation. It might bear witness to the inventiveness of English poetry in a period with few such records; and, as Secretum is a dialogue, it might even be counted an early English secular work for performance. The edition has detailed explanatory notes and a glossary, revealing its verbal inventiveness and the translator's familiarity with Chaucerian verse traditions. It has an extensive introduction, relating it to literary culture at Winchester at the time and to the manuscripts of Petrarch's Latin Secretum in England at the time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49727640502545,"sku":"NGR9780198828334","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52734558175505,"sku":"NIN9780198828334","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198828330.jpg?v=1751290513"},{"product_id":"merlin-book-hb-wheatley-9780859918022","title":"Merlin","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50111256133905,"sku":"GOR013859492","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0859918025.jpg?v=1751170620"},{"product_id":"poems-from-bl-ms-harley-913-book-thorlac-turville-petre-9780198739166","title":"Poems from BL MS Harley 913","description":"British Library MS Harley 913 is known as the 'Kildare Manuscript' from the authorship of one of the poems by the Franciscan, Friar Michael of Kildare. The collection was written in the 1330s, in Ireland, perhaps in Waterford. It is chiefly known for two poems in particular, often anthologised, but now presented in their literary and cultural context: 'The Land of Cockaygne,' a fantasy of a culinary and sexual earthly paradise, and 'Lollai, lollai, litel child', a lullaby warning the baby of what is to come in later life. The manuscript contains 17 English poems, 12 of which were probably composed in Ireland, three Anglo-Norman poems, and many Latin items in prose and verse, including Goliardic satire, preaching materials, and matters concerning the Franciscans and their history. The English poems include a description of the humiliations of old age, a satire on the inhabitants of an unnamed Irish town, a celebration of the massacre of native Irish, a complaint about the corruption of those in power, reflections on Christ's passion and guides to basic Christian doctrine. A French poem gives a detailed account of the building of defences around New Ross. Apart from their literary and historical interest, the English material is important linguistically, as the chief and earliest evidence for the English language in Ireland. The English and Anglo-Norman poems are edited complete, with detailed headnotes, annotations and glossary, while full accounts are given of the Latin texts. It is an English translation of Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda aurea (ca. 1267), a collection of legends for the feasts of saints (the Sanctorale) and other major days of the liturgical year (the Temporale). The Legenda aurea was one of the most popular and influential books in the later medieval Western world; it circulated widely, and was repeatedly translated into many vernacular languages. This volume reproduces Caxton's original text of the Temporale with modern punctuation and capitalization, notes on content, syntax and lexis, a detailed glossary, and an index of proper names. Caxton's complex combination of sources is given particular attention: the principal one was a little-known reworking of the French translation made by Jean de Vignay, but he also used the Latin original and a previous English translation, the Gilte Legende, and made some personal additions. The Introduction considers the structure of the entire book that Caxton created, but focuses on the Temporale and the set of Old Testament legends that will follow in volume 2. It discusses their sources and language, highlighting the differences between the first two volumes and the notable number of new words and senses. It also gives a detailed bibliographic account of this printing in its historical context and descriptions of all surviving copies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346462249233,"sku":"CIN0198867964G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198867964.jpg?v=1751195642"},{"product_id":"mirror-to-devout-people-book-paul-j-patterson-9780198744979","title":"A Mirror to Devout People","description":"This edition of A Mirror to Devout People presents for the first time a Middle English Life of Christ, with additional religious advice, written in the early fifteenth century by a Carthusian monk at the Sheen Charterhouse for a sister at the nearby Bridgettine Syon Abbey. Both the Sheen Charterhouse and Syon were recent royal foundations, established by Henry V. The Mirror is an important example of the devotional works produced to satisfy demand among laity as well as professed religious, wanting to read lives of Christ in the years following the repressive legislation of Archbishop Arundel (1409), which placed severe restrictions on biblical translation into English, intended to limit the spread of heresy. The Mirror, written in the tradition of the highly successful translation by another Carthusian, Nicholas Love, of Pseudo-Bonaventure's life of Christ, testifies to the demand for such material in pious households.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50346705486097,"sku":"GOR010443059","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198744978.jpg?v=1751389269"},{"product_id":"lollard-sermons-book-g-cigman-9780197222966","title":"Lollard Sermons","description":"These Lollard sermons are edited from British Library MS Additional 41321; Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Rawlinson c.751; Manchester, John Rylands Library MS 412; with introductory sections: I. The Language, by Jeremy Smith; and three other introductions written by Gloria Cigman which contain extensive information about the texts and the manuscripts. They are distinctive in their intense preoccupation with the role of the preacher and the exposition of the scriptures, and in the total absence of narrative exempla. They were evidently composed for both popular transmission and as a manual for the preacher, who is sometimes urged to elaborate, or directed to other material relevant to his theme, or offered multiple exegesis for his own instruction and from which to select when preaching. There is a consistent flavour of popular Lollardy in the vocabulary and attitudes expressed. Marked differences between the sermons, however, suggest more than one sermon-writer and an overall intention to demonstrate different preaching methods. Writing in the fifteenth century, Bokenham's work, which combines prose and verse, was influenced by major writers such as Chaucer and Lydgate, both in its content and in its verse forms and style, and thus sheds new light on their fifteenth-century reputation. Some fifty years after he died, his English commentary was revised by a series of Lollard writers, and this redaction was itself subsequently modified by other revisers, having a similar radical outlook. This edition presents for the first time a full edition of the first of the Lollard revision, and gives detailed evidence for the second. It is based on a full study of all manuscripts of both versions, and includes the commentaries on the twelve Canticles which accompanied the Psalter commentary, and seem to have been regarded as a part of the whole. This first Lollard revision reveals the work of a complex organisation: an academic team which worked on the text for a considerable time, and whose work was not in every respect complete. This is the first of a three-volume edition. Volume 1 contains the Introduction and Psalms 1-34; the remaining two volumes (to appear as O.S. 341 and 343) will contain the remainder of the text, Explanatory Notes, and Glossary.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51080915353873,"sku":"NIN9780199669202","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52516215193873,"sku":"NLS9780199669202","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199669201.jpg?v=1751258720"},{"product_id":"contemplations-of-the-dread-and-love-of-god-book-margaret-connolly-9780197223055","title":"Contemplations of the Dread and Love of God","description":"Contemplations of the Dread and Love of God (also known as Fervor Amoris) is a late Middle English devotional prose text. In essence it is a manual of guidance for the spiritual and ethical life, directed at the lay population, and intended for both sexes, rather than at a monastic audience (although there is evidence that the text was read by nuns). It is a useful index of English popular spirituality since its circulation seems to have been extensive: it survives in sixteen manuscripts, dating from the early-to-mid fifteenth century, and two early sixteenth century printed editions, evidence of its enduring popularity into the early modern period. Despite this, previous treatment by scholars has been negligible, and this is the first critical edition of the text. This edition is based on one manuscript, with variant readings cited from the other witnesses where necessary; the volume has a full critical apparatus, and an introduction which discusses manuscript relations, matters of textual criticism, editorial technique, language, and dating.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51122127831313,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51122129043729,"sku":"GOR004852802","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0197223052.jpg?v=1751164481"},{"product_id":"ipomadon-book-r-purdie-9780197223192","title":"Ipomadon","description":"The fullest English version of Hue de Rotelande's twelfth-century Anglo-Norman romance, Ipomedon, this is the first English edition, with full comparison of the different versions of this popular story.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51122127896849,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51122129076497,"sku":"GOR014180602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52434142855441,"sku":"NLS9780197223192","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0197223192.jpg?v=1751037830"},{"product_id":"castleford-s-chronicle-or-the-boke-of-brut-volume-ii-book-carolined-eckhardt-9780197223086","title":"Castleford's Chronicle, or The Boke of Brut: Volume II","description":"Castleford's Chronicle is a long verse chronicle, written in a Northern English dialect, which recounts the traditional history of Britain from its foundation year to 1327. J. Furnivall, in part to supply lexicographical material for the Philological Society's 'New English Dictionary' (now the Oxford English Dictionary). Many medieval English texts were hitherto unprinted, or only in scarce editions, and hence unavailable to the Dictionary's readers. But Furnivall and his associates were also fascinated by these texts for their insights into medieval and early modern social history: Furnivall, social reformer and founding member of the Working Men's College, and under Carlyle's influence, read the material as a mirror from which political lessons could be learned for his own times. Initially he published medieval texts through the Philological Society but, asked to find another outlet, decided to found his own publishing society. This first volume (of three) of the EETS's history takes the story from Furnivall's birth to the beginnings of the EETS. It offers much new material concerning Furnivall's biography as a young man, as well his associates in the College (including Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites), and the EETS's early editors (including Richard Morris and Oswald Cockayne).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51201907130641,"sku":"NGR9780198934080","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198934084.jpg?v=1750694456"},{"product_id":"osbern-bokenham-lives-of-the-saints-volume-iii-book-simon-horobin-9780198934073","title":"Osbern Bokenham, Lives of the Saints, Volume III","description":"This third volume completes the text of this first edition of a major work by the translator and hagiographer Osbern Bokenham. Sallust's history deals with a pivotal moment in Roman Republican history, when the Roman patrician Catiline tried to overthrow the Republic in 63 bce. Surviving in a unique manuscript, this anonymous rendering was the first ever translation of a Roman history into English. It is also one of the earliest instances of a vernacular humanist translation that was made directly from its classical Latin source. Although the translation is based closely on a contemporary printed text of Sallust's Latin, it amplifies its source extensively, drawing on a Latin commentary and on other texts such as Vegetius' Epitoma rei militari. The translation deserves a central place in our accounts of Tudor translation and Renaissance humanism at the turn of the sixteenth century. This is the first ever edition of this important text. Its Introduction reconstructs the provenance of the sole manuscript witness and sets the translation in its historical and cultural contexts, making a significant contribution to scholarship on early Tudor humanism and the reception of Sallust at the turn of the sixteenth century. The Explanatory Notes reflect on contemporary scribal practice, comment on historical and lexical issues and record relevant variants in contemporary texts of Sallust's Latin.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51595277140241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51595277631761,"sku":"NGR9780198976387","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198976380.jpg?v=1750909032"},{"product_id":"dome-of-uryne-book-m-teresa-tavormina-9780198845324","title":"The Dome of Uryne","description":"An edition of nine of the most widely-disseminated texts in one of the most common genres of Middle English medical writing, uroscopy (the diagnosis and prognosis of disease based on examination of patients' urine).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51602367971601,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51602369118481,"sku":"CIN0198845324VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52734558830865,"sku":"NIN9780198845324","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198845324.jpg?v=1751290540"},{"product_id":"osbern-bokenham-book-simon-horobin-9780192871893","title":"Osbern Bokenham","description":"This is the second edition of a major work by the translator and hagiographer Osbern Bokenham. Bokenham's work is also important for his naming of the patrons for whom he translated a number of these saints' lives, allowing scholars to trace networks of patronage amongst prominent members of the gentry and nobility in fifteenth-century East Anglia.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51727756001553,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51727756067089,"sku":"NGR9780192871893","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192871897.jpg?v=1750779653"},{"product_id":"middle-english-stanzaic-versions-of-the-life-of-st-anne-book-re-parker-9780859916837","title":"The Middle English Stanzaic Versions of the Life of St Anne","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52100107403537,"sku":"GOR014461797","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780859916837.jpg?v=1757088419"},{"product_id":"wulfstan-s-canons-of-edgar-book-rg-fowler-9780197222669","title":"Wulfstan's Canons of Edgar","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52100339007761,"sku":"GOR014463944","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780197222669.jpg?v=1757089244"},{"product_id":"ancrene-wisse-volume-1-book-b-millett-9780197223284","title":"Ancrene Wisse Volume 1","description":"The thirteenth-century Ancrene Wisse is one of the major works of early Middle English prose, and was repeatedly revised and adapted for different audiences. This new volume contains an account of the original Latin texts from which the Old English translation derives. It considers the translation methods used, evidence of authorship, orthography and language, and textual transmission. The Old English translations of the Latin Gospels are considered to be one of the major literary and cultural achievements of the late Anglo-Saxon period. This collection in Cambridge, Trinity College, MS B.14.52 has not been edited as a whole since Richard Morris included a lightly-edited text in his Old English Homilies of the Twelfth Century (EETS, 1873). This new edition updates and supplements his work, giving more attention to the Latin elements of the sermons, and providing new translations, comprehensive annotation and a full glossary. It also supplies, in appendices, separately edited texts and translations of sermon material shared with the Trinity manuscript in two other sermon-collections of about the same period, the 'Lambeth Homilies' in London, Lambeth Palace Library, MS 487, and the collection formerly preserved in London, British Library, MS Cotton Otho A. xiii. Until recently the few surviving early Middle English sermon-collections have attracted relatively little scholarly attention, focused mainly on their debt to the pre-Conquest tradition of vernacular preaching. Over the past two decades, however, their contemporary context has been investigated with increasing thoroughness, and their connections with recent developments in continental Europe are now taken more fully into account. The Trinity collection in particular shows the influence of two convergent factors: the evolution of new preaching techniques in the Paris schools of the later twelfth century, and the programme of pastoral reform introduced by the third Lateran Council of 1179 and reinforced by the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215. An extended introduction discusses the impact of these developments on preaching and pastoral care in twelfth-century England, the evidence for the pastoral milieu of the collection itself, and the ways in which its sermons reflect the transition from older to newer preaching methods in England during the inter-conciliar period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52102039470353,"sku":"NGR9780198972754","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198972754.jpg?v=1757095497"},{"product_id":"old-english-bede-history-ii-i-book-t-miller-9780859918640","title":"Old English Bede History II.i","description":"This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923.
