To date, the medical need of efficient therapy for this de- vastating cerebrovascular disorder remains unmet. During the last decades, the development of pharmacological stroke therapies was aimed at improving patient outcome by restoration of cerebral blood flow or protection from acute neuronal cell death. Almost all of The participants of the workshop VI Preface these appraaches targeted the very early events after vascular occIu- sion. However, primarily for logistical reasons, only a small portion of strakes can be treated within 6-10 h after the insult. In recent years it has been recognized that strake pathophysiology is a dynamic pracess, and that delayed pracesses, which occur dur- ing the days and weeks following arterial occIusion, may lead to further deterioration or to impairment of recovery and rehabilitation in subacute and chranic stages. Evidence is accumulating that neu- rainflammation is a major player in these delayed pathophysiologi- cal pracesses. While some components of neurainflammation such as removal of cell debris and release of traphic factors may support recovery pracesses, others such as the generation of free radicals and other cytotoxic mediators are deleterious for brain tissue after isch- emia. Thus, neurainflammation after strake can be considered a dou- ble-edged sword, having potentially both detrimental and beneficial effects. As in other inflammatory reactions in the body, the cellular and humoral interactions are highly complex in the setting of neu- rainflammation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49636038344977,"sku":"GOR012670464","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540403485.jpg?v=1751284854"},{"product_id":"molecular-imaging-book-alexei-bogdanov-9783642422041","title":"Molecular Imaging","description":"The continuous progress in the understanding of molecular processes of disease formation and progression attributes an increasing importance to biomedical molecular imaging methods. Since then, these meetings have been held in Holland, France, Italy, England, Sweden\/Finland (Aland), Germany, and Bel- gium. This year the circle has been closed: The 9th European Testis Workshop is back in the Norwegian mountains where it all started. The Scientific Committee of the First European Testis Workshop included Dr. H.J. van der Molen (Rotterdam), Dr. V. Hansson (Oslo), Dr. B. Cooke (London), Dr. V. Monesi (Rome), Dr. E.M. Ritzen (Stockholm), and Dr. J.M. Saez (Paris). Since then, two of the founders have left the Scientific Committee. Dr. Monesi died suddenly on 29 December 1979, 3 1\/2 months before the first workshop took place. Thus, in spite of being one of the founders, he never experienced a Eu- ropean Testis Workshop. Dr. Mario Stefanini, from the same research institute in Rome, replaced Dr. Monesi on the Scientific Committee. Another founder of this workshop series, Dr. H.J. van der Molen (Rot- terdam), is one of the pioneers in research on molecular endocrinology of the testis in Europe. It is now widely accepted that the brain, considered to be an immunologically privileged organ, can exhibit immune and autoimmune responses, and it is these responses that may in fact be responsible for many neural pathologies. The participants of the workshop VI Preface Research over the past decade has demonstrated the pivotal role of the microglia in the neuroinflammatory process, and more recent work in the field of chemokines has firmly established their important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease states. Inevitably with the wealth of research being conducted in the field of neuroinflammation comes the hope of identifying novel targets for therapeutic intervention in the inflammatory process which may im- pact on neurodegenerative diseases. The meeting Neuroinflammation - From Bench to Bedside aimed to cover the whole spectrum of research currently being pursued in this exciting field, literally taking the participants from the bench - study- ing the importance of the microglia in the inflammatory process and the involvement, in particular, of the rapidly expanding chemokine family in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases - to the bedside - and the possibilities for novel treatment of disorders as di- verse as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, stroke and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125166207249,"sku":"NLS9783540430902","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540430902.jpg?v=1757462825"},{"product_id":"molecular-and-cellular-endocrinology-of-the-testis-book-g-verhoeven-9783662221914","title":"Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Testis","description":"The European Workshops on Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Testis have become by now a well-established tradition. Thanks to their special format, the quality of the main lectures and miniposters, and the vivid discussions, they enjoy the ever-increasing interest and active participation of all European scientists working in the field. Moreover, since the very beginning they have attracted investigators from all over the world. The most recent Testis Workshop was held in De Panne, Belgium, from 27-3 March, 1994. As always, the frame- work of the workshop was provided by a series of lectures delivered by a panel of internationally recognized authorities. These lectures are ga- thered in the present volume of the Ernst Schering Foundation Work- shop series. Together with the Miniposter book they constitute an excel- lent written account of the Proceedings of the 8th European Testis Workshop. The testis undoubtedly represents one of the most complex and in- triguing tissues in the body. Both its endocrine function, the secretion of male sex hormones, and its exocrine role, the production of mature spermatozoa, continue to raise startling questions to clinicians, physi- ologists, endocrinologists, and scientists involved in fundamental re- search. Few organs maintain and support a differentiation process as complicated as spermatogenesis; few tissues continually display both mitotic and meiotic cell cyles in such a stringently controlled fashion or a comparable need for coordinated endocrine and local control.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125556146449,"sku":"NLS9783662221914","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783662221914.jpg?v=1757466514"},{"product_id":"interferon-the-dawn-of-recombinant-protein-drugs-book-j-lindenmann-9783662037898","title":"Interferon: The Dawn of Recombinant Protein Drugs","description":"Forty years of Interferon I wish to dedicate this short introduction to the memory of Alick Isaacs (1921-1967), and to that of Sir Christopher Andrewes (1896-1988). Let us go back more than 40 years. In 1956 Isaacs was in charge of the Wodd Influenza Centre. Andrewes was head of the division of bac- teriology and virology, and deputy director of the National Institute for Medical Research in London. When researchers are faced with a seemingly new phenomenon, ex- planations are easy to come by. These explanations fall into two broad categories: the phenomenon in question is either due to something or to the lack of something. I apologize for the primitive way in which I ex- press this, but I am going to give three examples, scattered over 100 years, of what I mean. First example: in 1880 the great French microbiologist Louis Pas- teur was involved in work on chicken cholera. He was struck by the following observation: if a suitable chicken broth was inoculated with the bacterium, the organism grew profusely and the liquid became tur- bid. If he now freed the fluid, by sedimentation or filtration, from the bulk of the organisms and re-inoculated it with the same bacterium, no growth occurred.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52126513103121,"sku":"NLS9783662037898","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783662037898.jpg?v=1757476681"},{"product_id":"molecular-basis-of-sex-hormone-receptor-function-book-hinrich-gronemeyer-9783662036914","title":"Molecular Basis of Sex Hormone Receptor Function","description":"How sex hormone receptors and all the other members of the nuclear receptor superfamily do such a remarkable job has fascinated scientists for decades. These conferences bring together a critical mass of top scientists working in an impor- tant area in an intimate setting that fosters the free exchange of knowledge and ideas. In this spirit, Workshop 45 assembled leaders in the field of chemokines - hemotactic cytokines that coordinate leukocyte trafficking - amid the scenic vineyards and wineries of Napa Valley, to discuss the latest concepts of how these molecules regulate the immune response and disease. Chemokines were se- lected as a conference topic because they have revitalized the study of leukocyte trafficking and are widely considered to be potential new targets for drug development, in diseases ranging from acute in- flammation and autoimmunity to HIV and cancer. Discovered in the 1980s, the chemokine superfamily currently has 43 human members, making it the largest subset of cytokines. Mem- bers are defined by conserved sequences and a common three-di- mensional fold, and can be divided into two major functional groups - homeostatic and inflammatory - depending on whether they are produced constitutively, and thereby control basal lymphocyte traf- ficking, or whether they must be induced, for example by pathogens or injury, and thereby control deployment of effector leukocytes in emergencies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138239918353,"sku":"NLS9783662054055","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52932513497361,"sku":"NIN9783662054055","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783662054055.jpg?v=1757561605"},{"product_id":"gene-therapy-book-robert-e-sobol-9783662035795","title":"Gene Therapy","description":"This book is a collection of preclinical and clinical reports on the application of gene therapy to human disease. These changes play an important role in the regulation of gene expression by modulating the access of regulatory factors to the DNA. The use of a combination of biochemical, genetic and structural approaches has allowed demonstration of the role of chromatin structure in transcriptional control. The structure of nucleosomes has been elucidated and enzymes involved in DNA or histone modifications have been extensively characterized. Since deregulation of epigenetic marks has been reported in many cancers, a better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms bears the promise that new drug targets may soon be found. Mem- bers are defined by conserved sequences and a common three-di- mensional fold, and can be divided into two major functional groups - homeostatic and inflammatory - depending on whether they are produced constitutively, and thereby control basal lymphocyte traf- ficking, or whether they must be induced, for example by pathogens or injury, and thereby control deployment of effector leukocytes in emergencies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52340483260689,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52340487061777,"sku":"NLS9783540402213","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540402213.jpg?v=1758170793"},{"product_id":"tissue-specific-estrogen-action-book-kenneth-s-korach-9783540495475","title":"Tissue-Specific Estrogen Action","description":"Nuclear hormone receptors are not only important drug targets, but have also been the focus of decades of active and highly insightful research. Systems biology is in vogue because of its potential to revolutionize not only biology but also medicine. Developments are anticipated that will change how we think about disease and how we approach therapeutic intervention. Perhaps the boldest vision of this future is presented by Dr. Leroy Hood, President of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. He has been a protagonist and the main driving force of the underlying concept. - cording to Dr. Hood, systems biology will make possible a new era of medical care comprising predictive, preventive, personalized and part- ipatory (P4) medicine. While this vision appears futuristic, it has enticed both academic scienti?c communities and pharmaceutical industry R\u0026amp;D organizations. Systems biology ultimately attempts to understand biological s- tems at the molecular level. Examples of such systems are subcellular regulatory circuits with all their components, cells, organs, as well as - tire organisms. Over the past decade, technologies have been developed that enable systems-level interrogations, e.g., gene expression pro?ling, proteomics, and metabonomics, to name a few. Despite these encouraging developments, available therapies are only partially effective, and the ultimate goal is still far from being attained. Improved understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration and demyelination has led to a variety of new therapeutic targets and approaches. In addition to modulation of the in?ammatory process (MS) and cl- sical neuroprotection (stroke, AD), therapeutic approaches focussing on active remyelinization and neuronal regeneration have become incre- ingly important. Based on current concepts, this book summarizes new therapeutic approaches. Although it was once thought that the central nervous system (CNS) of mammals was incapable of substantial recovery from injury, it is now clear that the adult CNS remains responsive to various substances that can promote cell survival and stimulate axonal growth. Among these substances are growth factors, including the neurotrophins and cytokines. Stem cell therapies for the induction of remyelinization and neuroregeneration are reviewed. The potential role of a protective - munity in the induction of remyelination and neuroregeneration is also discussed. This understanding has been achieved by major advances in several areas. Three major ni- tric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms have been identified at the protein and gene level and their specific tissue localization has been linked to processes subject to regulation by NO-. The molecular basis for the di- verse effects of NO- on cell function has been shown to derive from its chemical reactivity with oxygen-containing species and both heme and non-heme iron-dependent enzymes. The potential regulation of heme- dependent enzymes such as cytochromes P450, guanylate cyclase, cy- clooxygenase, and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase continues to emerge as a key area in NO- research. In addition, it has become clear that the expression of NOS isoforms and NO- release from cells is subject to regulation by sexual steroids and that, in tum, NO- has the potential to regulate steroid biosynthesis via inhibition of cytochromes P450 involved in steroidogenesis. These recent observations on interactions between the NO-\/NOS and cytochrome P450\/sexual steroid pathways have important implica- tions for understanding fundamental mechanisms involved in endocri- nological processes. Lack of sufficient angiogenesis (new capillary development) and collateral formation (remodeling of existing blood vessels) in adult tissues (e. g. , heart, brain, skeletal muscle) during criti cal ischemia has prompted novel therapeutic strategies to stimulate\/fa cilitate angiogenesis and collateral formation in ischemic conditions (\"therapeutic angiogenesis\"). Therapeutic angiogenesis describes a strategy of inducing new col lateral vessels that can bypass vascular obstructions caused by atherosclerotic disease and stimulating new capillaries that can en hance tissue oxygen exchange. Naturally occurring growth factors (e. g. , FGFs, VEGFs) have been identified and demonstrated to induce new blood vessel formation in the adult organism. The therapeutic ap plication of these growth factors has been demonstrated to enhance these natural processes and have been shown in a number of animal models to increase blood flow and oxygen exchange to ischemic tis sues. Therapeutic angiogenesis therefore represents a new medical principle that is anticipated to be used as an adjunct or alternative to angioplasty and\/or bypass surgery. The aim of the Ernst Schering Research Foundation Workshop 29 was to discuss the contribution of research on model organisms which are particularly suited for genetic and biological research, to the understanding of gen- eral principles of biology as well as the basis for human diseases. This area of research has not only unveiled the basic molecular mechanisms of development of higher organisms, but has also made major contri- butions to the elucidation of complex signal transduction pathways that play crucial roles both in ontogeny and human diseases. Establishing the complete molecular anatomy of an organism is a demanding but rather well-defined task. However, compared to the technical and scientific challenges of large-scale sequencing and the bioinformatics analysis of complete genome data, the assignment of function to the genes of multicellular organisms may still seem like a fishing expedition, with no universal road to success. One approach is based on large-scale technologies. The use of mi- croarrays for multiple gene expression analysis is one element in this effort, providing important information on the cell- or tissue-specific activation of genes over time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52426796204305,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52426796794129,"sku":"NLS9783662042663","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783662042663.jpg?v=1759158989"},{"product_id":"interactions-between-adjuvants-agrochemicals-and-target-organisms-book-pj-holloway-9783662029909","title":"Interactions Between Adjuvants, Agrochemicals and Target Organisms","description":"In recent years the importance of adjuvants for optimising the activity of agrochemicals has become increasingly recognized. As cost containment strategies are introduced by governments, as payers become more conscious and influential in their decisions about shaping therapies, and as consumers become more involved in directing their own health care, health care providers and pharmaceutical companies are being challenged to rethink the way they do business. This volume explores these changes and the potential responses. Parallel developments in health care delivery, information systems, pharmaceutical discovery and development are explored in Europe, the U.S. and Japan. Alternative futures or scenarios of health systems in 2010 summarize this diversity in the context of economic growth and economic hard times. This book explores the future of biomedical science by considering how the social, political and economic context in health care delivery and pharmaceutical industry will evolve. There is a slight chance that the future will be a successful extrapolation of the present, far more likely are scenarios which forecast major changes in the paradigms of medicine and health policy. Indeed, at first glance the recovery of stem cells from cord blood has to be seen as separate from the attempts to achieve effective in utero therapy by stem cell trans- plantation, because the first issue deals with an innovative stem cell source as an alternative to bone marrow, which is already spreading rapidly in medical practice, whereas the second topic is still strictly ex- perimental and only investigated in medical centers with the appropri- ate background. It is, however, not only justified, but helpful to com- bine the two topics in one workshop and consequently to cover them in the same volume of the Ernst Schering Research Foundation Work- shop series, because they are intimately related and both based on the new insights into the biology of stem cells. Professor Werner Arber, the Nobel Laureate from the University of Basel, pointed out in his In- Professor Dr. W. The meeting Neuroinflammation - From Bench to Bedside aimed to cover the whole spectrum of research currently being pursued in this exciting field, literally taking the participants from the bench - study- ing the importance of the microglia in the inflammatory process and the involvement, in particular, of the rapidly expanding chemokine family in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases - to the bedside - and the possibilities for novel treatment of disorders as di- verse as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, stroke and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52428507414801,"sku":"NLS9783662050750","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783662050750.jpg?v=1759164350"},{"product_id":"recent-trends-in-molecular-recognition-book-f-diederich-9783662035764","title":"Recent Trends in Molecular Recognition","description":"Reasoning in terms of molecular recognition may be traced back to Emil Fischer, who practiced the art of chemistry at Humboldt University in Prussian Berlin a century ago. The technological advances derived from this knowledge are particularly important, diverse, and directly evident in the pharmaceutical industry. Under the auspices of the Ernst Schering Research Foundation, a workshop held in Berlin in February 1998 addressed novel basic developments of potential relevance to drug research efforts. The success of such therapies is mainly dependent on ef?cacious therapeutic drugs and a selective imaging probe for identi?cation of potential responders as well as therapy monitoring for an early bene't assessment. Molecular imaging (MI) is based on the selective and speci?c interaction of a molecular probe with a biological target which is visualized through nuclear, magnetic resonance, near infrared or other methods. Therefore it is the method of choice for patient selection and therapy monitoring as well as for speci?c e- point monitoring in modern drug development. PET (positron emitting tomography), a nuclear medical imaging modality, is ideally suited to produce three-dimensional images of various targets or processes. The rapidly increasing demand for highly selective probes for MI strongly pushes the development of new PET tracers and PET chemistry. 'PET chemistry' can be de?ned as the study of positron-emitting compounds regarding their synthesis, structure, composition, reactivity, nuclear properties and processes and their properties in natural and - natural environments. In practice PET chemistry is strongly in?uenced by the unique properties of the radioisotopes used (e. g., half-life, che- cal reactivity, etc. ) and integrates scienti?c aspects of nuclear-, organic-, inorganic- and biochemistry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52431259926801,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52431260647697,"sku":"NLS9783642421648","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642421648.jpg?v=1759171994"},{"product_id":"new-avenues-to-efficient-chemical-synthesis-book-ph-seeberger-9783642420849","title":"New Avenues to Efficient Chemical Synthesis","description":"In modern drug discovery and development, chemical synthesis is one of the key technologies.
