The fundamental laws of mechanics are taken for granted and are not subject to discussion. The present book is concerned with those issues of the above listed sub jects which, in the author's opinion, are most closely related to engineering problems. Application of the methods of analytical mechanics to non-trivial prob lems at the very stage of constructing the equations requires detailed knowl edge of the issues that are normally only briefly touched upon. With this perspective considerable attention is paid to ways of introducing the gener alised coordinates, the theory of finite rotation, methods of calculating the kinetic energy, the energy of accelerations, the potential energy of forces of various nature, and the resisting forces. These introductory chapters, which have to some extent independent significance, are followed by those on methods of constructing differential equations of motion for holonomic and non-holonomic systems in various forms. In these chapters the issues of their interrelations, determination of the constraint forces and some prob lems of analytical statics are discussed as well. It is thought useful to include geometric considerations of the motion of a material system as motion of the representative point in Riemannian space.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061034483985,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061037138193,"sku":"NIN9783540429821","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52435072057617,"sku":"NLS9783540429821","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540429824.jpg?v=1751253026"},{"product_id":"rational-and-applied-mechanics-book-nikolai-nikolaevich-polyakhov-9783030641177","title":"Rational and Applied Mechanics","description":"Available for the first time in English, this two-volume course on theoretical and applied mechanics has been honed over decades by leading scientists and teachers, and is a primary teaching resource for engineering and maths students at St. Petersburg University. This problem, however, is of considerable interest and has many important applications. The problem of low-cyclic fatigue of metals, which is now in a well de- veloped state is one such application. The investigations within this area are actually directed to collecting experimental facts about repeated cyclic loadings, cf. 47J. Theoretical investigations within this area usually con- sider the hysteretic loops and the construction of models of plasticity theory which are applicable to the analysis of repeated loadings and the study of the simplest dynamic problems. Another area of application of the theory of the vibration of elastoplas- tic bodies is the applied theory of amplitude-dependent internal damping. Another name for this theory is the theory of energy dissipation in vibrat- ing bodies. In accordance with the point of view of Davidenkov internal damping in many metals, alloys and structural materials under consider- able stress presents exactly the effect of micro plastic deformations. There- fore, it may be described by the methods of plasticity theory. This point of view is no doubt fruitful for the theory of energy dissipation in vibrating bodies, as it allows one to write down the constitutive equations appropri- ate both for vibrational analysis of three-dimensional stress states and an investigation of nonharmonic deformation. These problems are known to be important for the theory of internal damping.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089255100689,"sku":"NLS9783540637240","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540637240.jpg?v=1756906477"},{"product_id":"stability-of-elastic-structures-book-na-alfutov-9783540657002","title":"Stability of Elastic Structures","description":"The subject discussed in this book is the stability of thin-walled elastic systems under static loads. The author has tried to avoid arcane, nonstandard problems and elaborate and unexpected solutions, which bring real pleasure to connoisseurs, but confuse students and cause bewilderment to some practical engineers. Traditional \"classical\" methods of pro tection, based upon utilising elastic passive and dissipative elements, turn out to be inefficient in many situations and can not completely satisfy the complex and often contradictory claims imposed on modern vibration protection systems which must provide high performance at minimum di mensions. For these reasons, active vibration protection systems, which are actually systems of automatic control with independent power sources, are widely used nowadays. Appearing and developing active systems require that traditional ap proaches to the analysis and synthesis of vibration protection systems must be revised. Firstly, there exists the necessity to re-state the problem of vi bration protection from mechanical actions as an equivalent problem in closed-loop control systems design, which is to be solved by the methods of control theory. Furthermore, it turns out that certain inherent proper ties of active systems must be taken into account for a proper design. In the majority of cases, the dynamic models of the objects to be protected and the bases to which these objects are to be attached must be revised. They are no longer considered as rigid bodies but elastic bodies with weak dissipation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52126789107985,"sku":"NLS9783662222362","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783662222362.jpg?v=1757479804"},{"product_id":"engineering-vibration-analysis-book-valery-a-svetlitsky-9783540207825","title":"Engineering Vibration Analysis","description":"Constantly increasing attention is paid in the course 'Vibration 'Theory' to vibration of mechanical systems with distributed parameters, since the real elements of machines, devices, and constructions are made of materials that are not perfectly rigid. 'Therefore, vibrations of the objects including, for ex- ample, rod elastic elements excite the vibrations of these elements, which can produce a substantial effect on dynamic characteristics of moving objects and on readings of instruments. For a mechanical engineer working in the field of design of new technolo- gies the principal thing is his know-how in developing the sophisticated math- ematical models in which all specific features of operation of the objects under design in real conditions are meticulously taken into account. So, the main emphasis in this book is made on the methods of derivation of equations and on the algorithms of solving them (exactly or approximately) taking into con- sideration all features of actual behavior of the forces acting upon elastic rod elements. 'The eigen value and eigen vector problems are considered at vibrations of curvilinear rods (including the rods with concentrated masses). Also consid- ered are the problems with forced vibrations. When investigating into these problems an approximate method of numerical solution of the systems of lin- ear differential equations in partial derivatives is described, which uses the principle of virtual displacements. The monograph is devoted to systems with a single degree of freedom and sys- tems with a finite number of degrees of freedom. In particular, problems are for- mulated associated with determination of frequencies and forms of vibrations, study of forced vibrations, analysis of both stable and unstable vibrations (includ- ing those caused by periodic but anharmonic forces). The problems of nonlinear vibrations and of vibration stability, and those related to seeking probabilistic characteristics for solutions to these problems in the case of random forces are also considered. Problems related to parametric vibrations and statistical dynamics of mechanical systems, as well as to determination of critical parameters and of dy- namic stability are also analyzed. We can hardly name a branch of industry or civil engineering where the results of the stability theory have not found their application. This extensive development together with engineering applications are reflected in a flurry of papers appearing in periodicals as well as in a plenty of monographs, textbooks and reference books. In so doing, overwhelming majority of researchers, con- cerned with the problems of practical interest, have dealt with the loss of stability in the thin-walled structural elements. Trying to simplify solution of the problems, they have used two- and one-dimensional theories based on various auxiliary hypotheses. This activity contributed a lot to the preferential development of the stability theory of thin-walled structures and organisation of this theory into a branch of solid mechanics with its own up-to-date methods and trends, but left three-dimensional linearised theory of deformable bodies stability (TL TDBS), methods of solving and solutions of the three-dimensional stability problems themselves almost without attention. Within a pretty short term this book saw two editions in Russian. The authors received in- spiring responses from readers that both stimulated our continuing and improving this work and made sure it would not be in vain of us to try to multiply our readers by covering the English-speaking engineering community. When we prepared the present edition, we took into account interests of the Western readers, so we had to make some changes to our text published earlier. These changes include the following aspects. First, we excluded a lot of references and discussions regarding Russian engi- neering codes. It seems to us those are of no real interest for Western engineers oriented at Eurocode or national construction design regulations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52327407255825,"sku":"NLS9783540006282","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540006282.jpg?v=1758062400"},{"product_id":"statistical-dynamics-and-reliability-theory-for-mechanical-structures-book-valery-a-svetlitsky-9783540442974","title":"Statistical Dynamics and Reliability Theory for Mechanical Structures","description":"The monograph text is based on lectures delivered by author during many years for students of Applied Iechanics Department of Bauman Ioscow State Technical University. The monograph includes also analitical results of scientific research obtained in collaboration with industry. Progress in developing new equipment has called for a better understand- ing of the physical peculiarities pertaining to the action of designed structures in real conditions. This is necessary for increasing the accuracy of the analysis and making these structures more reliable. It has been found that classical determined perturbations are not principal and that determinism-based methods of classical mechanics prove insufficient for understanding and explaining physical effects that arise at the operation of instruments located on moving objects, the vibration of rocket engines, the motion of a vehicle, and the action of wind and seismic loads. Therefore the necessity arose for devising a new physical model to analyze these dynamic processes and, in particular, for creating a new mathematical apparatus that would allow us to take into account non-deterministic external excitations. In addition to the theoretical results, the book contains a detailed description of experiments that show that, in general, the friction force at the instant of transition to motion is determined by the rate of tangential load and does not depend on the duration of the previous contact. These results are used to develop the theory of frictional self-excited oscillations. A number of industrially relevant mechanisms are considered, including the Painleve-Klein scheme, epicyclic mechanisms, crank mechanisms, gear transmission, the link mechanism of a planing machine, and the slider of metal-cutting machine tools. The principal subjects of creep mechanics are the formulation of constitutive equations for creep in structural materials under multi-axial stress states; the application of structural mechanics models of beams, plates, shells and three-dimensional solids and the utilization of procedures for the solution of non-linear initial-boundary value problems. The objective of this book is to review some of the classical and recently proposed approaches to the modeling of creep for structural analysis applications as well as to extend the collection of available solutions of creep problems by new, more sophisticated examples. In Chapter 1, the book discusses basic features of the creep behavior in materials and structures and presents an overview of various approaches to the modeling of creep. Chapter 2 collects constitutive models that describe creep and damage processes under multi-axial stress states. Chapter 3 deals with the application of constitutive models to the description of creep for several structural materials. Constitutive and evolution equations, response functions and material constants are presented according to recently published experimental data. In Chapter 4 the authors discuss structural mechanics problems. Governing equations of creep in three-dimensional solids, direct variational methods and time step algorithms are reviewed. Examples are presented to illustrate the application of advanced numerical methods to the structural analysis. An emphasis is placed on the development and verification of creep-damage material subroutines inside the general purpose finite element codes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332605440273,"sku":"NLS9783642089817","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642089817.jpg?v=1758152173"},{"product_id":"ultrasonic-processes-and-machines-book-vk-astashev-9783642091247","title":"Ultrasonic Processes and Machines","description":"I don't mind your thinking slowly, I mind your publishing faster than you think. This assumes coupled considerations between the ultrasonic vibration's in?uence on the processes, and the consequence of the transformed processing loads on the excitation and control of the working tools' vibration. On the other hand, the proposed mathematical models and the proposed methods of their solutions allow to achieve more accurate approximation to the real processes exhibited by dynamics of shell (plate) - type structures with thermosensitive excitation. Albert Einstein Introduction The power of the variational approach in mechanics of solids and structures follows from its versatility: the approach is used both as a universal tool for describing physical relationships and as a basis for qualitative methods of analysis [1]. And there is yet another important advantage inherent in the variational approach – the latter is a crystal clear, pure and unsophisticated source of ideas that help build and establish numerical techniques for mechanics. This circumstance was realized thoroughly and became especially important after the advanced numerical techniques of structural mechanics, first of all the finite element method, had become a helpful tool of the modern engineer. Certainly, it took some time after pioneering works by Turner, Clough and Melos until the finite element method was understood as a numerical technique for solving mathematical physics problems; nowadays no one would attempt to question an eminent role played by the variational approach in the process of this understanding. It is a combination of intuitive engineer thinking and a thoroughly developed mathematical theory of variational calculus which gave the finite element method an impulse so strong that its influence can still be felt. It would be too rash to say that there are few publications or books on the subject matter discussed in this book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332729696529,"sku":"NLS9783642079498","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52932503535889,"sku":"NIN9783642079498","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642079498.jpg?v=1758152524"},{"product_id":"vortex-wakes-of-aircrafts-book-as-ginevsky-9783642242465","title":"Vortex wakes of Aircrafts","description":"Investigation of vortex wakes behind various aircraft, especially behind wide bodied and heavy cargo ones, is of both scientific and practical in terest. Under particular configurations, such systems demonstrate a sudden change in the behaviour of elastic and dissipative forces. Mathematical study of such systems involves an analysis of equations of motion containing large-factored nonlinear terms which are associated with the above threshold nonlinearity. Due to this, we distinguish such discontinuous systems from the much wider class of essentially nonlinear systems, and define them as strongly nonlinear systems'. The vibration occurring in strongly nonlinear systems may be characterised by a sudden and abrupt change of the velocity at particular time instants. Such a vibration is said to be non-smooth. The systems most studied from this class are those with relaxation (Van Der Pol, Andronov, Vitt, Khaikhin, Teodorchik, etc. [5,65,70,71,98,171,181]), where the non-smooth vibration usually appears due to the presence of large nonconservative nonlinear forces. Equations of motion describing the vibration with relaxation may be written in such a manner that the highest derivative is accompanied by a small parameter. The methods of integration of these equations have been developed by Vasilieva and Butuzov [182], Volosov and Morgunov [190], Dorodnitsin [38], Zheleztsov [201], Mischenko and Rozov [115], Pontriagin [137], Tichonov [174,175], etc. In a system with threshold nonlinearity, the non-smooth vibration occurs due to the action of large conservative forces. This is distinct from a system with relaxation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52352245432593,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52352246251793,"sku":"NLS9783540414476","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540414476.jpg?v=1758181731"},{"product_id":"thermal-integrity-in-mechanics-and-engineering-book-boris-f-shorr-9783662469675","title":"Thermal Integrity in Mechanics and Engineering","description":"The book is targeted at engineers, university lecturers, postgraduates, and final year undergraduate students involved in computational modelling and experimental and theoretical analysis of the high-temperature behavior of engineering structures. The material differs from numerous traditional text books on Theory of Machines and Mechanisms through a more profound elaboration of the methods of structural, geometric, kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanisms and machines, consisting in both the development of well-known methods and the creation of new ones that take into account the needs of modem machine building and the potential of modem computers. The structural analysis of mechanisms is based on a new definition of structural group which makes it possible to consider closed structures that cannot be reduced to linkages of Assur groups. The methods of geometric analysis are adapted to the analysis of planar and spatial mechanisms with closed structure and several degrees of movability. Considerable attention is devoted to the problems of con- figuration multiplicity of a mechanism with given input coordinates as well as to the problems of distinguishing and removing singular positions, which is of great importance for the design of robot systems. These problems are also reflected in the description of the methods of kinematic analysis employed for the investi- gation of both open (tree-type) structures and closed mechanisms.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52426444308753,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52426444964113,"sku":"NLS9783642536724","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642536724.jpg?v=1759157828"},{"product_id":"statistical-dynamics-and-reliability-theory-for-mechanical-structures-book-valery-a-svetlitsky-9783642536571","title":"Statistical Dynamics and Reliability Theory for Mechanical Structures","description":"The monograph text is based on lectures delivered by author during many years for students of Applied Iechanics Department of Bauman Ioscow State Technical University. The theory of random processes that had been developed well enough as applied to problems of radio engineering and automatic control, where the effect produced by random excitations appeared to be commensurable with that of deterministic excitations and where the ignoring of the random ex- citations would bring about incorrect results, became such an apparatus.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52427297325329,"sku":"NLS9783642536571","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52932507926801,"sku":"NIN9783642536571","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642536571.jpg?v=1759160553"},{"product_id":"mathematical-models-in-natural-science-and-engineering-book-juri-i-neimark-9783642536823","title":"Mathematical Models in Natural Science and Engineering","description":"This book has come into being as a result ofthe author's lectures on mathematical modelling rendered to the students, BS and MS degree holders specializing in applied mathematics and computer science and to post-graduate students in exact sciences of the Nizhny Novgorod State University after N.!. This new course of lectures appeared because the contemporary Russian educational system in applied mathematics rested upon a combination of fundamental and applied mathematics training; this way of training oriented students upon solving only the exactly stated mathematical problems, and thus there was created a certain estrangement to the most essential stages and sides of real solutions for applied problems, such as thinking over and deeply piercing the essence of a specific problem and its mathematical statement. This statement embraces simplifications, adopted idealizations and creating a mathematical model, its correction and matching the results obtained against a real system. The first concerns the putting of more and more powerful software packages into computational practice, using increas- ingly high-performance computers with increasingly large memory. The traditional finite element and finite difference approaches are still preva- lent. Over the years however, researchers have met with new problems; their solutions on the basis of traditional methods are at best difficult and at worst impossible to obtain. Such problems provided a powerful impetus in the development of the second strand, resulting in the development of es- sentially new approaches for numerical modeling, for example meshless methods, molecular dynamics, neuron networks. The current state of the art formed the basis of many papers presented at the Fifth World Congress on Computational Mechanics, Vienna 2002.
