Since the 1970s there has been an explosion in research focusing on LGBTQ history and on the lives of LGBTQ young people, but these two research areas have seldom been brought together explicitly. Bridging LGBTQ historical scholarship and contemporary queer youth cultural studies, this book marks out pathways for thinking more about youth in LGBTQ history and more about history in contemporary understandings of LGBTQ youth. Examining histories from the nineteenth century through to the recent past, contributors examine queer youth histories in continental Europe, Britain, the United States of America, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland, India, Malaysia and Hong Kong.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732782883089,"sku":"NGR9781137565495","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51020719653137,"sku":"NIN9781137565495","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404953481489,"sku":"NLS9781137565495","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1137565497.jpg?v=1751442438"},{"product_id":"perceptions-of-pregnancy-from-the-seventeenth-to-the-twentieth-century-book-jennifer-evans-9783319441672","title":"Perceptions of Pregnancy from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Century","description":"This multi-disciplinary collection brings together work by scholars from Britain, America and Canada on the popular, personal and institutional histories of pregnancy. It follows the process of reproduction from conception and contraception, to birth and parenthood. The contributors explore several key themes: narratives of pregnancy and birth, the patient-consumer, and literary representations of childbearing. This book explores how these issues have been constructed, represented and experienced in a range of geographical locations from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Crossing the boundary between the pre-modern and modern worlds, the chapters reveal the continuities, similarities and differences in understanding a process that is often, in the popular mind-set, considered to be fundamental and unchanging.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49737924444433,"sku":"NGR9783319441672","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150574842129,"sku":"NLS9783319441672","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037349011729,"sku":"NIN9783319441672","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319441671.jpg?v=1751189559"},{"product_id":"masculinity-and-power-in-irish-nationalism-1884-1938-book-aidan-beatty-9781137440990","title":"Masculinity and Power in Irish Nationalism, 1884-1938","description":"This book is a comparative study of masculinity and white racial identity in Irish nationalism and Zionism. It analyses how both national movements sought to refute widespread anti-Irish or anti-Jewish stereotypes and create more prideful (and highly gendered) images of their respective nations. Drawing on English-, Irish-, and Hebrew-language archival sources, Aidan Beatty traces how male Irish nationalists sought to remake themselves as a proudly Gaelic-speaking race, rooted both in their national past as well as in the spaces and agricultural soil of Ireland. On the one hand, this was an attempt to refute contemporary British colonial notions that they were somehow a racially inferior or uncomfortably hybridised people. But this is also presented in the light of the general history of European nationalism; nationalist movements across Europe often crafted romanticised images of the nation’s past and Irish nationalism was thus simultaneously European and postcolonial. It is this that makes Irish nationalism similar to Zionism, a movement that sought to create a more idealized image of the Jewish past that would disprove contemporary anti-Semitic stereotypes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49799689666833,"sku":"CIN1137440996VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1137440996.jpg?v=1750709105"},{"product_id":"british-masculinity-in-the-gentlemans-magazine-1731-to-1815-book-gillian-williamson-9781137542328","title":"British Masculinity in the 'Gentlemans Magazine', 1731 to 1815","description":"The Gentleman's Magazine was the leading eighteenth-century periodical. Those giving evidence, individually or through their professional associations, included a broad cross-section of official, professional and bureaucratic Britain: police chiefs, policemen, magistrates, judges, lawyers and Home Office civil servants; doctors, biologists (including Alfred Kinsey), psychiatrists, psychoanalysts and psychotherapists; prison governors, medical officers and probation officers; representatives of the churches, morality councils and progressive and ethical societies; approved school headteachers and youth organization leaders; representatives of the army, navy and air force; and a small handful of self-described but largely anonymous homosexuals. It offers a panoramic view of middle-class Victorian life, shedding light upon sexual cultures and life histories too often hidden from history. Symonds (1840-93) began writing his Memoirs in 1889. It was, he confessed, 'a foolish thing to do.' Symonds was a respected man of letters, an historian, translator, essayist and poet; he was also married with children. But rather than unfold a simple tale of public and private achievement, the Memoirs record his struggle to reconcile his homosexuality with these professional and familial identities. His autobiography offers a confessional account of relationships beyond the accepted bounds of nineteenth-century social mores, presenting an alternative case study that contests the legal and medical authorities that would label his desires a crime or disease. Yet being so eloquent on matters of heterodox sexuality, the Memoirs were suppressed. The manuscriptsurvives because Symonds recognised its import, however 'foolish': he instructed his literary executor to preserve the text, a duty ultimately discharged by placing the manuscript under embargo in the care of the London Library.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51023400239377,"sku":"NIN9781349953721","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52532539556113,"sku":"NLS9781349953721","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1349953725.jpg?v=1750712527"},{"product_id":"material-setting-and-reform-experience-in-english-institutions-for-fallen-women-book-susan-woodall-9783031405709","title":"Material Setting and Reform Experience in English Institutions for Fallen Women, 1838-1910","description":"Tracing the history of four English case studies, this book explores how, from outward appearance to interior furnishings, the material worlds of reform institutions for fallen women reflected their moral purpose and shaped the lived experience of their inmates.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061902344465,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061905588497,"sku":"NIN9783031405709","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031405706.jpg?v=1750999257"},{"product_id":"correspondence-of-karl-heinrich-ulrichs-1846-1894-book-douglas-pretsell-9783030397623","title":"The Correspondence of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, 1846-1894","description":"This book will be the first critical edition of all the surviving correspondence to, from and about Karl Heinrich Ulrichs between 1846 and 1894. Ulrichs, a former Hanoverian lawyer, was the first to articulate a personal identity of sexuality that defined individuals by their sexual object. This articulation of sexual modernist identities is Ulrichs’ abiding legacy to the world. He wrote twelve short books between 1864 and 1879, arguing for the removal of laws and prejudice against 'urnings' and articulating a scientific theory that placed them as a third gender. He is a foundational figure in the history of sexuality, yet there has never been an edition of his complete correspondence in either English or the original German.  The correspondence between the years of 1846 and 1894 covers three definable periods: the years before Ulrichs began writing (1846-1864); the years between which all his principle works, his lobbying and all his activism took place (1865-1879); and his final years in exile (1880-1895). The analysis will contend that the correspondence reveals that Ulrichs’ project was not just a lonely campaign against legal prohibition of the 'hydra of public contempt', but instead was part of a far wider campaign of community-led self-definition that was actively promoted at home and abroad.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51063521444113,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51063524622609,"sku":"NIN9783030397623","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030397629.jpg?v=1751189833"},{"product_id":"catholic-church-and-modern-sexual-knowledge-1850-1950-book-lucia-pozzi-9783030797850","title":"The Catholic Church and Modern Sexual Knowledge, 1850-1950","description":"This book is the first to present a comprehensive historical picture of the modern Catholic concern with the body and sexuality. The Catholic church is commonly believed to have always opposed birth control and abortion throughout the centuries. Yet the Catholic encounter with modern sexuality has a more complex and interesting history. What was the meaning of sexual purity? Why did eugenics matter to Catholicism? How did the Society of Jesus interpret the idea of overpopulation? Why did Pius XI decide to issue the notorious encyclical Casti connubii on Christian marriage – the first modern papal pronouncement on birth control, abortion, and eugenics? In answering these questions, Lucia Pozzi uncovers new archival and unpublished records to dig into Catholic responses to modern sexual knowledge, showing the Catholic church at times resisting, but also often welcoming, scientific modernity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51064445894929,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064448352529,"sku":"NIN9783030797850","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52479153799441,"sku":"NLS9783030797850","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030797856.jpg?v=1751317341"},{"product_id":"common-prostitutes-and-ordinary-citizens-book-j-laite-9780230230545","title":"Common Prostitutes and Ordinary Citizens","description":"Between 1885 and 1960, laws and policies designed to repress prostitution dramatically shaped London's commercial sex industry. Recent scholarship on the history of the women’s liberation movement in individual countries has enhanced our understanding of the importance of transnational influences in the history of European feminism, and problematised the periodisation of feminisms. Additionally, the translation of feminist practices and texts have received interest during the past years. Despite this work, the United States, and to a lesser extent the United Kingdom, are still the main points of reference in histories of post-war feminism. This book asks what happens to the picture if we place non-English speaking European countries in the centre. Using Lucy Delap’s concept of ‘mosaic feminism’, its contributors emphasise the variety of patterns that women’s feminist organising showed in different cultural contexts despite similarities in their ideological corner stones.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51384158814481,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51384159797521,"sku":"NIN9783031691379","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153078251793,"sku":"NGR9783031691379","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031691377.jpg?v=1751415466"},{"product_id":"higher-education-and-the-gendering-of-space-in-england-and-wales-1869-1909-book-georgia-oman-9783031299896","title":"Higher Education and the Gendering of Space in England and Wales, 1869-1909","description":"This book offers a spatial history of the decades in which women entered the universities as students for the first time. Through focusing on several different types of spaces - such as learning spaces, leisure spaces, and commuting spaces - it argues that the nuances and realities of everyday life for both men and women students during this period can be found in the physical environments in which this education took place, as declaring women eligible for admittance and degrees did not automatically usher in coeducation on equal terms. It posits that the intersection of gender and space played an integral role in shaping the physical and social landscape of higher education in England and Wales in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, whether explicitly - as epitomised by the building of single-sex colleges - or implicitly, through assumed behavioural norms and practices.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51387366703377,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51387367850257,"sku":"NGR9783031299896","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031299892.jpg?v=1750902079"},{"product_id":"feminism-in-finnish-print-media-1968-1985-book-heidi-kurvinen-9783031694691","title":"Feminism in Finnish Print Media, 1968-1985","description":"This book focuses on the discussion of the women’s liberation movement and feminism in Finnish print media between 1968 and 1985. By analysing this topic, the book demonstrates that a relatively well-developed state of gender equality in a society does not necessarily result in fertile ground for feminist activism. On the contrary, it may hinder the success of more radical claims presented by feminists, and mass media serves as a central player in this. Consequently, the book enhances our understanding of the mechanisms that prevent societies from reaching complete equality, and it shows how cultural specificities influence the ways in which transnational ideas of feminism are adopted in a local context. This is shown by analysing the dialogic relationship between journalists and feminist activists as well as the mediated negotiations of the meanings of feminism within the women’s movement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51640499437841,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51640499699985,"sku":"NIN9783031694691","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153344917777,"sku":"NGR9783031694691","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031694694.jpg?v=1751221075"},{"product_id":"queer-urbanisms-in-wilhelmine-and-weimar-germany-book-mathias-foit-9783031465789","title":"Queer Urbanisms in Wilhelmine and Weimar Germany","description":"This book explores the queer history of the easternmost provinces of the German Reich—regions that used to be German, but which now mostly belong to Poland—in the first third of the twentieth century, a period roughly corresponding to the duration of Germany's first queer movement (1897-1933). While the amount of queer historical studies examining entire towns and cities in the German Reich has grown to an impressive size since the 1990s, most of that research concerns, firstly, the usual, large metropoles such as Berlin, Hamburg or Cologne, and, secondly, municipalities located in Germany 'proper'; that is, within its modern borders, not those of the German state in the first half of the twentieth century. Smaller cities (not to mention rural areas) in particular have received very little scholarly attention. Section Two explores the shifting meanings of the moustache, both as a manly symbol in the nineteenth century, and also as the focus of the material culture of personal grooming. Yuki Terazawa combines Foucauldian theory andfeminist ideas with in-depth historical research. She argues that central to the rise of bio-power and the colonization of people by this power was modern scientific taxonomies that classify people into categories of gender, race, nationality, class, age, disability, and disease. Whilediscussions of the roles played by the modern state are of critical importance to this project, significant attention is also paid to the increasing influences of male obstetricians and the parts that trained midwives and public health nurses played in the dissemination of modern powerafter the 1868 Meiji Restoration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143462121745,"sku":"NLS9783319730837","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319730837.jpg?v=1757584589"},{"product_id":"frigidity-book-p-cryle-9780230303454","title":"Frigidity","description":"This first major study of a curiously neglected term in the history of sexuality will intrigue students, scholars and enthusiasts alike.
