There are no hard and fast rules on how to make it work for everyone. If we don't want to have things imposed upon us, then government by the people and for the people is the best system on offer. We call it democracy. We thought that, given a chance, every country would choose to become a liberal democracy. It hasn't quite worked out like that. There is pushback. No one likes to give up power. Strong leaders seem to offer certainty and stability. Big companies are much more responsive and efficient than governments. We don't like facing up to difficult choices and prefer to find fault with others rather than examine our own actions. Democracy is about making difficult choices and if we don't appreciate what makes the system work, we risk losing it. It is like a play that has repeat performances, with the audience having a say over the cast and the plot. Mob rule is bad. Elections are a fight. As no one has all the answers, we allow for power to change hands. Give the other side a chance and see if they can do a better job. In this play, audience participation is compulsory. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Government by the people and for the people requires the people to take part; to choose between competing ideas; to join political parties. To stand up for things that are important. The last five years have been a big challenge. The UK ceased being a member of the European Union. Faced with a deathly pandemic, we've accepted restrictions to our civil liberties that were unimaginable before. It is time to pause and reflect. Democracy has always been challenged, but this time it's more serious. The meaning of democracy is to take part.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49509487214865,"sku":"GOR013153881","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49745112596753,"sku":"NGR9781913368517","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1913368513.jpg?v=1772100248"},{"product_id":"power-of-politicians-book-tessa-jowell-9781912208074","title":"The Power of Politicians","description":"The Power of Parliament is an autobiographical account of Tessa Jowell's experience of entering politics and making effective sense of her role. In telling the story, drawn out by questions from Frances D'Souza, Jowell gives fascinating insights into the workings of Parliament, the successful development of policy into legislation, and also of her interior life: what inner resources she brought to the role; how she protected herself against the morally corrosive force of power-seeking; what inspired her and what troubled her. The result is a master-class in how to be a good politician. The Power of Parliament offers not just a case study of the life and work of a politician, but also attends to deeper questions about what is morally and emotionally demanded of a politician - exposed as they are to corrosive effects of having to seek and retain power - and of the institution of Parliament itself, in the face of public hostility and indifference.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49511880491281,"sku":"GOR009545199","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51480483168529,"sku":"GOR012720954","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1912208075.jpg?v=1773315723"},{"product_id":"power-of-judges-book-david-neuberger-9781912208234","title":"The Power of Judges","description":"Full of insights, The Power of Judges is an informative and accessible account of the UK judicial system, its contribution to running the country and the challenges it faces, including the many threats to its effectiveness.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49568701874449,"sku":"GOR009726005","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736957067537,"sku":"NGR9781912208234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49784157667601,"sku":"GOR013493112","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50270260134161,"sku":"GOR009918593","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1912208237.jpg?v=1773312833"},{"product_id":"not-for-patching-book-frank-field-9781910376799","title":"Not for Patching","description":"In his famous report of 1942, the economist and social reformer William Beveridgewrote that the war was a 'revolutionary moment in the world's history' and so a time 'forrevolutions, not for patching.' The Beveridge Report outlined the welfare state that Attlee'sgovernment would go on to implement after 1946, instituting, for the first time, a nationalsystem of benefits to protect all from 'cradle to the grave.' Since then the welfare system hasbeen patched, beset by muddled thinking and short-termism. The government spends overGBP171bn a year on welfare and yet, since the Beveridge Report, there has been no strategicreview of the system. Compare that to Defence which, with its comparatively small budgetof GBP35bn, is subject to a strategic review at least every decade. Reform of the welfare systemneed not mean dismantlement, but serious questions must be asked about how a welfarestate as we understand it remains sustainable into the 21st century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49634265301265,"sku":"GOR012226007","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49652628881681,"sku":"GOR009563311","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1910376795.jpg?v=1773312648"},{"product_id":"brexit-and-the-uk-constitution-book-john-springford-catherine-barn-9781914979514","title":"Brexit and the UK Constitution","description":"In trouble at home, stuck in detention at school-and the chili cheese fries are all gone Could this day get any worse?
