This comprehensive study combines a discussion of the geological and historical background with the results of original research based on many years of archaeological fieldwork. Author Yannis Lolos, drawing upon the limited excavations in Sikyonia, literary sources, and mostly his own extensive survey data, traces the history of the human presence in the territory of Sikyon from prehistory to the early modern period. This volume presents the project's final results, revealing abundant evidence not only for the history of activity in a transitional urban\/suburban landscape, but also for the society, economy, and religion of local residents. Important structural and mortuary discoveries abound, including a district of lavish houses with exquisite mosaic pavement and an Early Christian Octagon. The large artefactual assemblage encompasses a variety of objects from pottery and lamps to glass, coins, and jewellery. Bones and teeth from over 200 individuals illustrate differences in health over time, while thousands of bones and shells from a variety of animals attest to diet and subsistence. This study paints a picture of a Corinthian community, small but prosperous and well connected, actively participating in an urban elite culture expressed through decorative art and monumental architecture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51111398736145,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51111398899985,"sku":"NGR9780876615546","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52453985779985,"sku":"NLS9780876615546","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/087661554X.jpg?v=1750787383"},{"product_id":"molyvoti-thrace-archaeological-project-1-book-nathan-t-arrington-9780876615560","title":"The Molyvoti, Thrace, Archaeological Project 1","description":"Hesperia Supplement vol. 54 This volume is the first in a four-part series presenting the final results of the Molyvoti, Thrace, Archaeological Project (MTAP), a Greek-American synergasia project in northern Greece. The project is centered on a site often referred to as \"Ancient Stryme,\" which ancient sources identified as an emporion (trading post) and polis settled by Thasians. Focusing on the 2013-2015 field seasons, this volume offers a detailed presentation of the site's stratigraphy, material culture, and historical development. It proposes a revised chronology, including a 4th-century BCE reoccupation after destruction possibly associated with Philip of Macedon, and traces diachronic change through the Early Byzantine period. Among the project's notable discoveries is a complete Classical house--one of the few uncovered in Aegean Thrace--offering valuable insights into domestic architecture and material culture. An intensive urban survey sheds light on the city's 4th-century BCE fortifications and harbors, significantly enhancing our understanding of the scale and function of coastal settlements in the region. In the surrounding chora, the area's first geomorphological study examines landscape use and shifts in the ancient coastline. Contributions from more than 20 scholars present the site's architecture, stratigraphy, ceramics, small finds, and geographical data. Together, these studies illuminate Greek-Thracian interactions, patterns of settlement and trade, and environmental change from prehistory through the Early Byzantine era in this understudied region of the northern Aegean.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51595430592785,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51595430822161,"sku":"NGR9780876615560","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52654673723665,"sku":"NLS9780876615560","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0876615566.jpg?v=1751108173"},{"product_id":"archaeologies-of-cult-book-anna-lucia-d-agata-9780876615423","title":"Archaeologies of Cult","description":"Intended as a tribute to a pioneer in the field of Cretan cult study, 28 of Geraldine Gesell's former students and colleagues present aspects of ritual and religion on Crete. The pinakes-represented by over 1,200 fragments-and their depictions of gods, warriors, animals, and the potters themselves, provide a uniquely rich source of information about Greek art, technology, and society. In this volume, the findspot of the pinakes is identified in a contribution by Ioulia Tzonou and James Herbst, and the assemblage as a whole is fully contextualized within the Archaic world. Then, by focusing specifically on the images of potters at work, the author illuminates the relationship between Corinthian and Athenian art, the technology used in ancient pottery production, and religious anxiety in the 6th century B.C. The kiln is of a type popular during the Neopalatial period, and its good state of preservation has allowed the authors to speculate about its original internal layout and use, as well as about the roof that covered it. Much of the large quantity of pottery found associated with the kiln is analyzed in detail, allowing for the first time the study of the shapes, decoration, and technical characteristics of vases known to have been fired in a specific LM IA kiln. The book presents an integrated program of analytical techniques used to illustrate the range of firing temperatures, the compositional similarities and differences in the clays used, and aspects of the firing process and the upper kiln structure. The Isthmus, best known for the panhellenic Sanctuary of Poseidon, attracted travelers both before and after Pausanias's visit in the 2nd century A.D., but only toward the end of the 19th century were the ruins investigated and, a half century later, finally systematically excavated. More recently, archaeologists have surveyed the territory beyond the sanctuary, compiling evidence for a varied picture of activity on the wider Isthmus and the eastern Corinthia. The essays in this book celebrate 55 years of research on the Isthmus and provide a comprehensive overview of the state of our knowledge. Topics include an Early Mycenaean habitation site at Kyras Vrysi; the settlement at Kalamianos; the Archaic Temple of Poseidon; domestic architecture of the Rachi settlement; dining vessels from the Sanctuary of Poseidon; the Temple Deposit at Isthmia and the dating of Archaic and Early Classical Greek coins; terracotta figurines from the Sanctuary of Poseidon; the Chigi Painter; arms from the age of Philip and Alexander at Broneer's West Foundation on the road to Corinth; new sculptures from the Isthmian Palaimonion; an inscribed herm from the Gymnasium Area of Corinth; Roman baths at Isthmia and sanctuary baths in Greece; Roman buildings east of the Temple of Poseidon; patterns of settlement and land use on the Roman Isthmus; epigraphy, liturgy, and Imperial policy on the Justinianic Isthmus; and circular lamps in the Late Antique Peloponnese.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585068003601,"sku":"NLS9780876615485","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780876615485.jpg?v=1761052019"},{"product_id":"industrial-religion-book-susan-rotroff-9780876615478","title":"Industrial Religion","description":"This study focuses on thesaucer pyres,a series of 70 deposits excavated in the residential and industrial areas bordering the Athenian Agora. Each consisted of a shallow pit, its floor sometimes marked by heavy burning, with a votive deposit of pottery and fragments of burnt bone, ash, and charcoal. Most of the pots were miniatures (including the eponymous saucers) but a few larger vessels were found, along with offerings associated with funerary cult. The deposits represent a largely Athenian phenomenon, with few parallels elsewhere. When first found in the 1930s, the deposits were interpreted as baby burials. Recent zooarchaeological analysis of the bones, however, reveals that they are the remains of sheep and goats, and that the deposits were sacrificial rather than funerary. The present study investigates the nature of those sacrifices, taking into account the contents of the pyres, their spatial distribution, and their relationship to buildings around the Agora and elsewhere. In light of a strong correlation between pyres and industrial activity, the author argues that the pyres document workplace rituals designed to protect artisans and their enterprises.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585115812113,"sku":"NLS9780876615478","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780876615478.jpg?v=1761052171"},{"product_id":"greek-tile-works-at-corinth-book-gloria-s-merker-9780876615355","title":"The Greek Tile Works at Corinth","description":"A series of kilns at ancient Corinth known as the Tile Works are given final publication in this long-awaited book, based on excavations conducted in 1939 and 1940 (as war was closing in) by Carl Roebuck and Arthur Parsons, and renewed briefly in 1950 by Gladys Weinberg. The artisans at the Tile Works produced not only roof tiles but a whole range of terracotta articles from the 6th to 4th centuries B.C., with one break in production in the late 5th to early 4th century. These products included, at different periods, architectural sculpture and decorated revetments; heavy household pottery such as mortars and lekanai; loomweights; votive furniture such as altars and plaques; and even some fine and semi-fine pottery. The standard of craftsmanship was very high and the artifacts produced found enthusiastic markets in other parts of Greece; as the revetments of roofs at Delphi, for example, and as mortars in the markets of Athens. The Tile Works, therefore, along with the Potters' Quarter, was one of the major and most prolific industrial establishments in ancient Corinth. In this study, the principal features and deposits are first discussed, in order to establish the chronology of the three successive kilns on the site, and to try to relate them to known events in Corinth. The manufactures are then considered, beginning with a discussion of fabrics and techniques of manufacture, then moving on to typology and dating. The study concludes with a presentation of the Corinthian pottery and other artifacts found at the Tile Works but not made there, and a catalogue of terracottas by Charles K. Williams II.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585117942033,"sku":"NLS9780876615355","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780876615355.jpg?v=1761052176"},{"product_id":"excavations-at-pylos-in-elis-book-john-e-coleman-9780876615218","title":"Excavations at Pylos in Elis","description":"When the site of Elean Pylos was threatened by the construction of a dam in 1968, a team from the University of Colorado moved in to salvage as much information as possible about the ancient town before it was submerged. Also found in the well were the bones of over 150 dogs and an assortment of other animals, plus various artifacts, including an intriguing herm (treated here by Andrew Stewart) and an ivory chape. In addition to a thorough examination of the contents of the well, the authors provide a thoughtful analysis of the neighborhood in which the well was located and carefully compare the deposit with similar accumulations found elsewhere in the Mediterranean. The product of close cooperation between archaeological, palaeoanthropological, and faunal scholars, this interdisciplinary work will be of interest to a large audience across a variety of fields.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585167061265,"sku":"NLS9780876615508","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780876615508.jpg?v=1761052325"},{"product_id":"chrysokamino-metallurgy-workshop-and-its-territory-book-philip-p-betancourt-9780876615362","title":"The Chrysokamino Metallurgy Workshop and its Territory","description":"This detailed report describes archaeological fieldwork conducted between 1995 and 1997 in rural northeast Crete. Excavations were made in two locations: a metallurgy workshop (abandoned in EM III) and a nearby rural habitation site, perhaps a farmhouse (used until LM III). An intensive survey of the vicinity revealed other activities in the area from the Early Neolithic onwards, and placed the sites in a micro-regional context. A publication of the Minoan farmhouse will appear subsequently, but this volume stands on its own as both an overview of the project and as a detailed study of the copper smelting workshop.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585195766033,"sku":"NLS9780876615362","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780876615362.jpg?v=1761052384"},{"product_id":"studies-in-archaic-corinthian-vase-painting-book-d-a-amyx-9780876615287","title":"Studies in Archaic Corinthian Vase Painting","description":"Two important contributions to Greek pottery studies. Aftermath, by D. A. Amyx, is a catalogue of material supplementing his work in Corinth VII.2 but found after the cutoff of 1969 or omitted for some other reason. This article and Corinth VII.2 together stand as a full compilation of painters at present represented in the collection of the Corinth Excavations. The Chimaera Group at Corinth and Dodwellians in the Potters' Quarter are both by Patricia Lawrence. The first is a thoughtful analysis of this group of painters, based on a close examination of material found in the excavations at Corinth but including attributed pieces from other sites. The second studies 15 new fragments and reexamines material previously published in Corinth XV.3, demonstrating that the Geladakis Painter, as well as several Dodwellians, are represented there.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585199304977,"sku":"NLS9780876615287","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780876615287.jpg?v=1761052392"},{"product_id":"debris-from-a-public-dining-place-in-the-athenian-agora-book-john-h-oakley-9780876615256","title":"Debris from a Public Dining Place in the Athenian Agora","description":"In 1972 a large deposit of pottery and other finds from the mid-5th century B.C. were found in a pit just west of the Royal Stoa in the Athenian Agora. It contained many fragments of figured pottery, more than half of which were large drinking vessels. Twenty-one fragments were inscribed with a graffito known to be a mark of public ownership. The authors conclude that the pottery is refuse from one of the public dining facilities that served the magistrates of Classical Athens. The volume examines the archaeological context and chronology of the deposit and gives a detailed analysis of all the finds. Excavated in the beginning of the century by Harriet Boyd Hawes (Gournia) and Richard B. Seager (Mochlos), the cemeteries underwent cleaning operations in 1971, 1972, and 1976. These later investigations resulted in a more thorough understanding of the sites; actual-state plans and sections of the tombs and over-all maps of the cemeteries were produced. Chapters I and II present the excavations of the cemeteries of Gournia and Mochlos. A description of the cemetery as a whole unit is followed by a discussion of each tomb that includes bibliography, a description of location and excavation, a description of architecture, information about burials and chronology, and a catalogue of new and reexamined finds. Chapter III is a catalogue of all known tombs of this type in Crete. These two sections are tied together by the architectural discussion in Chapter IV. Chapter V, Offerings and Shrines, and Chapter VI, Burials and Social Ranking, explore the uses of house tombs and their significance in the religious and political life of early Greece. The volume has a comprehensive index, map and plans of the sites, line drawings of many of the catalogued objects, and photographs of the tombs and found objects.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52590869545233,"sku":"NLS9780876615249","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780876615249.jpg?v=1761062892"},{"product_id":"ceramicus-redivivus-book-john-k-papadopoulos-9780876615317","title":"Ceramicus Redivivus","description":"This volume presents selected material associated with potters' workshops and pottery production from some 14 Early Iron Age contexts northwest of the Athenian Acropolis that range in date from the Protogeometric through Archaic periods. The archaeological issues that can be addressed using stable isotope methods include the importance of fishing; the possible early introduction of millet; the nature of childrearing including weaning age and weaning foods; temporal shifts in protein consumption; differential access to certain foods associated with social status as well as gender and age; and cultural differences in dietary patterns.
