Twelve historians from many countries examine the image of women in the masculine mind, their social condition, and their daily experience from the demise of the Roman Empire to the genesis of the Italian Renaissance. More than in any other era, a medieval woman's place in society was determined by men; her sexuality was percieved as disruptive and dangerous, her proper realm that of the home and cloister. The authors draw upon the writings of bishops and abbots, moralists and merchants, philosophers and legislators, to illustate how men controlled women's lives. Sumptuary laws regulating feminine dress and ornament, pastoral letters admonishing women to keep silent and remain chaste, and learned treatises with their fantastic theories about women's physiology are explored in these pages. The authors investigate legal, economic, and demographic aspects of family life between the 6th and 15th centuries and bring to light the fleeting moments in which women managed to sieze some small measure of autonomy over their lives. The notion that courtly love empowered feudal women is discredited in this volume. The pattern of wear on a hearthstone, fingerprints on a terra-cotta pot, and artifacts from everyday life such as scissors, thimbles, spindles and combs are used to reconstruct in detail the commonplace tasks that shaped women's existence inside and outside the home. As in antiquity, male fantasies and fears are evident in art. Yet a growing number of women rendered visions of their own gender in sumptuous tapestries and illuminations. The authors look at the surviving texts of female poets and mystics and document the stirrings of a quiet revolution throughout the West, as a few daring women began to preserve their thoughts in writing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49521823547665,"sku":"GOR013128442","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50762563846417,"sku":"CIN0674403711G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51715359310097,"sku":"CIN0674403711VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0674403711.jpg?v=1750784115"},{"product_id":"history-of-women-in-the-west-book-pauline-schmitt-pantel-9780674403703","title":"A History of Women in the West","description":"In the words of the general editors, A History of Women seeks to understand women's place in society, their condition, the roles they played and the powers they possessed, their silence, their speech, and their deeds. It is the variety of the representations of women - as gods, Madonnas, witches, and so on - that we hope to capture, in its permanence as well as its many transformations. Informed by the work of 75 distinguished historians, this five-volume series presents a panoramic chronicle that extends from antiquity to the present day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49586373787921,"sku":"GOR002718672","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49614666531089,"sku":"GOR002413196","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":50233507545361,"sku":"CIN0674403703LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50355474202897,"sku":"CIN0674403703G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50807024255249,"sku":"CIN0674403703VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52604868395281,"sku":"GOR014560521","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52836818878737,"sku":"GOR014635591","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0674403703.jpg?v=1751198871"},{"product_id":"history-of-women-in-the-west-book-genevieve-fraisse-9780674403734","title":"A History of Women in the West","description":"With its Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the French Revolution opened a whole new stage in the history of women, despite their conspicuous absence from the playbill. The coming century would see women put in their place as never before, their subordination to men codified in all manner of new laws and rules; and yet the period would also witness the birth of feminism, the unprecedented emergence of women as a collective force in the political arena. The fourth volume in this series covers the distance between these two poles. It gives a vibrant picture of a bourgeois century, dynamic and expansive, in which woman's role in the home was stressed more and more, even as the economic pressures and opportunities of the industrial revolution drew her out of the house; in which woman's growing role in the family as the centre of all morals and virtues pressed her into public service fighting social ills. Here we see the world of women as it evolved between two cataclysmic events, the French Revolution and World War I. Once women's revolutionary usefulness had exhausted itself, this world came to revolve ever more narrowly around the home. The authors show us how woman was at once cast as the housewife, the - acquisitive consumer who acted as a counterpart to the bourgeois man, but also as a possession to be decorated and flaunted, and as well as the repository of all the values that had no place in business: tenderness, compassion, sentimentality, idealism, charity, and pity. Though focusing primarily on Europe, this volume also describes these \"feminine\" virtues affecting such public issues as abolition, temperance, and social work in the United States. Drawing on a wide range of sources in art, literature, and the new anthropology, the authors fashion an innovative history, one that documents the transformations in women's lives during this period, but also reveals the changes in perspectives on women.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50262516859153,"sku":"GOR005494348","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50359327490321,"sku":"CIN0674403738G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51534747140369,"sku":"CIN0674403738VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":51937478312209,"sku":"CIN0674403738A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0674403738.jpg?v=1751327075"},{"product_id":"history-of-women-in-the-west-book-natalie-zemon-davis-9780674403727","title":"A History of Women in the West","description":"At home and in the public sphere, at work and even - in some notable cases - at war: from the 16th through to the 18th centuries, the presence and actions of women from the top of the social hierarchy to the bottom were continually discussed by those who observed and often feared them. The third volume in this series draws a richly detailed picture of women in early modern Europe, a world that seems in odd ways a walled garden of words and images, meant to circumscribe an expansive and even stronger \"weaker sex\". Considering women in the context of work, marriage, and family, the authors describe a complex society in which the conduct of peasant and princess alike was expected to conform to rules largely established by masculine authority. We see the very different ways in which the highborn and the humble operated within these constraints: the poor or middle-class woman going to work in domestic service or the trades to shore up her dowry and so her chances of marriage; the aristocrat parlaying her position into marriage, and often into political influence as well. In the realm of appearance and sexuality, we see women obedient to norms and fashions but still attentive to their own desires. In the education of women, progress was uneven, pushed forward by religious reformation and economic need, but held back by the belief that only men should have full command over the empire of reason. At the heart of this volume is \"woman\" as she appears in a wealth of representations, from simple woodcuts and popular literature to master paintings; and as the focal point of debate - sometimes funny, sometimes acrimonious - conducted in every field: letters, arts, philosophy, the sciences, and medicine. Against oppressive experience, confining law, and repetitious claims about female \"nature\", women took initiative by quiet manoeuvres and outright dissidence. In conformity and resistance, in image and reality, women from the 16th to the 18th centuries emerge from these pages in remarkable diversity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50292378796305,"sku":"CIN067440372XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51327781372177,"sku":"CIN067440372XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51427859038481,"sku":"GOR014271700","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/067440372X.jpg?v=1751198871"},{"product_id":"history-of-women-in-the-west-book-francoise-thebaud-9780674403741","title":"A History of Women in the West","description":"Has this century been the best of times for women? How have the promises of freedom, parity with men, full participation in society, actually been met amid all the transformations and upheavals witnessed by the 20th century? This, the fifth volume in the series, brings the history of women up to the present, placing it in the context of the momentous events and profound social changes that have marked recent times. The history of women over the past 80 years is one of both fierce repression and unparalleled freedom, and this book reveals how political power in particular has been both wielded by women and used against them: for example, in wartime policies; the practices of the fascists and Nazis; in the conception and workings of the welfare state; and in the ideology and reality of Soviet-style Communism. Throughout this text, we observe the struggle for women's rights; early feminism coping with the challenges of mass politics, Communism, nationalism, and Freudianism; reappearing later as the women's liberation movement of the 1960s. This history is rich in images: the flapper; the woman liberated by the Pill; Superwoman of the 80s, reputedly capable of juggling career, children and lovers without missing a beat - all decoded here to expose the reality they represent and often distort. Thus we learn how the recent history of women is also a history of representation, a story in which transformations in sexual roles and relations are worked out, resisted, and complicated among the trappings of modernity, science and popular culture. What emerges from this work is some sense of how history itself is influenced by gender, of how recent women's history is not separate but different from that constructed by men and, as such, offers a new perspective on the way social roles have evolved, together with various systems of ideas and representations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50359330636049,"sku":"CIN0674403746G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50406323028241,"sku":"GOR004460861","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51461405704465,"sku":"CIN0674403746VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0674403746.jpg?v=1751393399"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/history-of-women-in-the-west-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
