Today, there is an abundance of mathematical results spread over numer ous scientific journals. However, before 1992, most of the studies concentrated on formal asymptotics or linear analysis. Only isolated results by Berger, Jaffe and Taubes and some of their colleagues touched the nonlinear aspects in great detail. In 1991, a physics seminar given by Ed Copeland at Sussex University inspired Q. Tang, the co-author of this monograph, to study the subject. Independently in Munich, K.-H. Hoffmann and his collaborators Z. Chen and J. Liang started to work on the topic at the same time. Soon it became clear that at that time, groups of mathematicians at Oxford and Virginia Tech had already studied the subject for a couple of years. They inspired experts in interface phase transition problems and their combined effort established a rigorous mathematical framework for the Ginzburg-Landau system. At the beginning Q. Tang collaborated with C.M. Elliott and H. Matano.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061915582737,"sku":"NIN9783034894999","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52142015676689,"sku":"NLS9783034894999","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3034894996.jpg?v=1753785692"},{"product_id":"flow-in-porous-media-book-jim-douglas-9783764329495","title":"Flow in Porous Media","description":"This volume contains fourteen papers on mathematical problems of flow and transport through porous media presented at the conference held at Oberwolfach, June 21-27, 1992. The book also focuses on the construction of feedback controls for nonlinear systems and highlights advances in the theory of problems with uncertainty. Decomposition methods of nonlinear systems and new techniques for constructing feedback controls for state- and control constrained linear quadratic systems are presented. There were 12 plenary lectures, 22 further invited talks, and around 150 con- tributed talks in parallel sessions as well as posters. The speakers in the parallel sessions were invited to provide a poster in order to enhance the dissemination of information. Hyperbolic partial differential equations describe phenomena of material or wave transport in physics, biology and engineering, especially in the field of fluid mechanics. Despite considerable progress, the mathematical theory is still strug- gling with fundamental open problems concerning systems of such equations in multiple space dimensions. For various applications the development of accurate and efficient numerical schemes for computation is of fundamental importance. Applications touched in these proceedings concern one-phase and multiphase fluid flow, phase transitions, shallow water dynamics, elasticity, extended ther- modynamics, electromagnetism, classical and relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, cosmology. Contributions to the abstract theory of hyperbolic systems deal with viscous and relaxation approximations, front tracking and wellposedness, stability ofshock profiles and multi-shock patterns, traveling fronts for transport equations. Leading scientists address current topics such as non-smooth optimization, Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellmann equations, issues in optimization and control of stochastic partial differential equations, reduced-order models and domain decomposition, discretization error estimates for optimal control problems, and control of quantum-dynamical systems. These contributions originate from the International Workshop on Control and Optimization of PDEs in Mariatrost in October 2011. The main goal is to describe, develop and analyze iterative space and time domain decompositions of such problems on the infinite-dimensional level. While domain decomposition methods have a long history dating back well over one hundred years, it is only during the last decade that they have become a major tool in numerical analysis of partial differential equations. A keyword in this context is parallelism. This development is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that we just encountered the 15th annual conference precisely on this topic. Without attempting to provide a complete list of introductory references let us just mention the monograph by Quarteroni and Valli [91] as a general up-to-date reference on domain decomposition methods for partial differential equations. The emphasis of this monograph is to put domain decomposition methods in the context of so-called virtual optimal control problems and, more importantly, to treat optimal control problems for partial differential equations and their decom positions by an all-at-once approach. This means that we are mainly interested in decomposition techniques which can be interpreted as virtual optimal control problems and which, together with the real control problem coming from an un derlying application, lead to a sequence of individual optimal control problems on the subdomains that are iteratively decoupled across the interfaces.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52127070912785,"sku":"NLS9783034896108","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034896108.jpg?v=1757482539"},{"product_id":"functional-analysis-and-approximation-book-pl-butzer-9783034893718","title":"Functional Analysis and Approximation","description":"These Proceedings form a record of the lectures presented at the interna tional Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation held at the Ober wolfach Mathematical Research Institute, August 9-16, 1980.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52127482478865,"sku":"NLS9783034893718","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034893718.jpg?v=1757486860"},{"product_id":"bifurcation-analysis-algorithms-applications-book-seydel-9783034872430","title":"Bifurcation: Analysis, Algorithms, Applications","description":"The conference on BIFURCATIONS: ANALYSIS, ALGORITHMS, APLICATIONS took place in Dortmund in August 18 - 22, 1986. The diversity of the range of treated topics and of involved fields inspired fruitful discussions. 36 refereed papers are contained in these proceedings. The subjects covered treat bifurcation problems, ranging from theoretical investigations to numerical results, with emphasis placed upon applications. The more theoreti- cal papers include the topics symmetry breaking, delay differential equations, Cornu spirals, homoclinic orbits, and selfsimilarity. Different kinds of bifurcations are treated: Hopf bifurcation, bifurcation from continuous spec- trum, complex bifurcation, and bifurcation near tori. Several numerical as- pects are discussed, among them continuation, block elimination, and spectral methods. Algorithms are proposed for approximating manifolds, calculating pe- riodic solutions and handling multi-parameter problems. Ample space is devoted to- applications. Classical phenomena from fluid mechanics (such as convection rolls and th Taylor vortex problem), buckling, and reaction-diffusion pro- blems are considered. Other applications of bifurcations include railway vehicle dynamics, computer graphics, semiconductors, drilling processes, simu- lation of oil reservoirs, and rotor dynamics. Many, but of course not all, moving free (Le., a priori un- known) boundary problems originating from engineering and economic applica- tions can directly, or after a transformation, be formulated as variational inequal- ities. In this work we investigate an evolutionary variational inequality with a memory term which is, as a fixed domain formulation, the result of the application of such a transformation to a degenerate moving free boundary problem. This study includes mathematical modelling, existence, uniqueness and regularity results, numerical analysis of finite element and finite volume approximations, as well as numerical simulation results for applications in polymer processing. Essential parts of these research notes were developed during my work at the Chair of Applied Mathematics (LAM) of the Technical University Munich. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to K. -H. Hoffmann, the head of this chair and the present scientific director of the Center of Advanced European Studies and Research (caesar), for his encouragement and support. It is probably more efficient to present such material after a reasonable competence in (at least) linear algebra and calculus has already been attained - but at this stage those not specializ- ing in numerical mathematics are often interested in getting more deeply into their chosen field than in developing skills for later use. An alternative approach is to incorporate the numerical aspects of linear algebra and cal- culus as these subjects are being developed. Long experience has persuaded us that a third attack on this problem is the best and this is developed in the present two volumes, which are, however, easily adaptable to other circum- stances. The approach we prefer is to treat the numerical aspects separately, but after some theoretical background. This is often desirable because of the shortage of persons qualified to present the combined approach and also because the numerical approach provides an often welcome change which, however, in addition, can lead to better appreciation of the fundamental con- cepts. For instance, in a 6-quarter course in Calculus and Linear Algebra, the material in Volume 1 can be handled in the third quarter and that in Volume 2 in the fifth or sixth quarter.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138151051537,"sku":"NLS9783034872881","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034872881.jpg?v=1757561129"},{"product_id":"evolution-equations-arising-in-the-modelling-of-life-sciences-book-messoud-efendiev-9783034807807","title":"Evolution Equations Arising in the Modelling of Life Sciences","description":"This book deals with the modeling, analysis and simulation of problems arising in the life sciences, and especially in biological processes. The models and findings presented result from intensive discussions with microbiologists, doctors and medical staff, physicists, chemists and industrial engineers and are based on experimental data. They lead to a new class of degenerate density-dependent nonlinear reaction-diffusion convective equations that simultaneously comprise two kinds of degeneracy: porous-medium and fast-diffusion type degeneracy. To date, this class is still not clearly understood in the mathematical literature and thus especially interesting. The author both derives realistic life science models and their above-mentioned governing equations of the degenerate types and systematically studies these classes of equations. The mathematical theory of hyperbolic equations has recently made considerable progress. Accurate and efficient numerical schemes for computation have been and are being further developed. This two-volume set of conference proceedings contains about 100 refereed and carefully selected papers. The books are intended for researchers and graduate students in mathematics, science and engineering interested in the most recent results in theory and practice of hyperbolic problems. Applications touched in these proceedings concern one-phase and multiphase fluid flow, phase transitions, shallow water dynamics, elasticity, extended thermodynamics, electromagnetism, classical and relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, cosmology. Contributions to the abstract theory of hyperbolic systems deal with viscous and relaxation approximations, front tracking and wellposedness, stability of shock profiles and multi-shock patterns, traveling fronts for transport equations. Numerically oriented articles study finite difference, finite volume, and finite element schemes, adaptive, multiresolution, and artificial dissipation methods.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52141769752849,"sku":"NLS9783034895385","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034895385.jpg?v=1757578204"},{"product_id":"multivariate-approximation-and-splines-book-gnther-nrnberger-9783034898089","title":"Multivariate Approximation and Splines","description":"This book contains the refereed papers which were presented at the interna- tional conference on Multivariate Approximation and Splines held in Mannheim, Germany, on September 7-10,1996. Fifty experts from Bulgaria, England, France, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine, USA and Germany participated in the symposium. It was the aim of the conference to give an overview of recent developments in multivariate approximation with special emphasis on spline methods. The field is characterized by rapidly developing branches such as approximation, data fit- ting, interpolation, splines, radial basis functions, neural networks, computer aided design methods, subdivision algorithms and wavelets. The research has applications in areas like industrial production, visualization, pattern recognition, image and signal processing, cognitive systems and modeling in geology, physics, biology and medicine. In the following, we briefly describe the contents of the papers. Exact inequalities of Kolmogorov type which estimate the derivatives of mul- the paper of BABENKO, KOFANovand tivariate periodic functions are derived in PICHUGOV. These inequalities are applied to the approximation of classes of mul- tivariate periodic functions and to the approximation by quasi-polynomials. BAINOV, DISHLIEV and HRISTOVA investigate initial value problems for non- linear impulse differential-difference equations which have many applications in simulating real processes. By applying iterative techniques, sequences of lower and upper solutions are constructed which converge to a solution of the initial value problem.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52142359642385,"sku":"NLS9783034898089","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034898089.jpg?v=1757579859"},{"product_id":"nonlinear-multiobjective-optimization-book-claus-hillermeier-9783034895019","title":"Nonlinear Multiobjective Optimization","description":"Arguably, many industrial optimization problems are of the multiobjective type. The present work, after providing a survey of the state of the art in multiobjective optimization, gives new insight into this important mathematical field by consequently taking up the viewpoint of differential geometry. This approach, unprecedented in the literature, very naturally results in a generalized homotopy method for multiobjective optimization which is theoretically well-founded and numerically efficient. The power of the new method is demonstrated by solving two real-life problems of industrial optimization. The preceding meetings took place at Villa Emma, near Udine, on May 1982, at Ravello on September 1983 and again at Villa Emma on June 1985. Publication of the proceedings started with the second meeting; the two resulting volumes were published by Springer Verlag, Vienna, under the series Cism Courses and Lectures. Unilateral Problems appear as a singular example of confluence of interests: they are the object of the attention of pure and applied mathematicians, of specialists in Continuum Mechanics and engineers. The idea which gave origin to this series of meetings was that of putting together people coming from such different fields. The result was an extremely fruitful exchange of experiences; it contributed, we believe, to the improvement of the knowledge in the area. The contents of the present Volume reflects the composite character of the meeting. There are contributions in the mathematical theory (Has linger, Panagiotopoulos, Romano), and studies in classical problems of Mechanics such as unilateral contact with friction (Kalker, Klarbring, Licht, Telega), Plasticity (Corradi, Del Piero, Owen) and composite materials and structures (Bruno, Leonardi). Some contributions deal with not yet completely explored questions of unilateral dynamics (Guo, Jean); finally, a contribution (Bennati) concerns the comparatively new subject of masonry structures, in which the unilateral constraint enters at the constitutive level.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143091417361,"sku":"NLS9783034873055","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034873055.jpg?v=1757582945"},{"product_id":"mathematical-models-for-phase-change-problems-book-jf-rodriques-9783034899260","title":"Mathematical Models for Phase Change Problems","description":"This monograph collects research and expository articles reflect- ing the interaction and the cooperation of different groups in several European institut ions concerning current research on mathematical models for the behaviour of materials with phase change. This project was carried out under the title Mathemat- ical Models of Phase Transitions and Numerical Simulation, in the framework of twinning program for stimulation of cooperation and scientific interchange, sponsored by the European Community. The underlying idea of the project was to create and study the mathematical models arising in applied engineering problems with free boundaries in a broad sense, namely in melting and freezing problems, diffusion-reaction processes, solid-solid phase transition, hysteresis phenomena, mushy region descriptions, contact prob- lems with friction andjor adhesion, elastoplastic deformations, etc. vi This large spectrum of applied problems have in common the main feature of brusque transitions of their qualitative behaviour that correspond, in general, to non-classical discontinuous monotone or non monotone strong nonlinearities in the mathematical equations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143322038545,"sku":"NLS9783034899260","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034899260.jpg?v=1757583945"},{"product_id":"applications-and-computation-of-orthogonal-polynomials-book-walter-gautschi-9783034897280","title":"Applications and Computation of Orthogonal Polynomials","description":"The workshop on Applications and Computation of Orthogonal Polynomials took place March 22-28, 1998 at the Oberwolfach Mathematical Research Institute. There were 46 participants from 13 countries, more than half coming from Germany and the United States, and a substantial number from Italy. A total of 23 plenary lectures were presented and 4 short informal talks. Open problems were discussed during an evening session. This volume contains refereed versions of 18 papers presented at, or submitted to, the conference. The theory of orthogonal polynomials, as a branch of classical analysis, is well established. But orthogonal polynomials play also an important role in many areas of scientific computing, such as least squares fitting, numerical integration, and solving linear algebraic systems. Though the basic tenets have their roots in 19th- century mathematics, the use of modern computers has required the development and study of new algorithms that are accurate and robust. On the other hand, integral equations are of practical interest because of the boundary integral equation method, which transforms partial differential equations on a domain into integral equations over its boundary. This book grew out of a series of lectures given by the author at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum and the Christian-Albrecht-Universitat zu Kiel to students of mathematics. The contents of the first six chapters correspond to an intensive lecture course of four hours per week for a semester. Readers of the book require background from analysis and the foundations of numeri- cal mathematics. Knowledge of functional analysis is helpful, but to begin with some basic facts about Banach and Hilbert spaces are sufficient. The theoretical part of this book is reduced to a minimum; in Chapters 2, 4, and 5 more importance is attached to the numerical treatment of the integral equations than to their theory. Important parts of functional analysis (e. g., the Riesz-Schauder theory) are presented without proof. We expect the reader either to be already familiar with functional analysis or to become motivated by the practical examples given here to read a book about this topic. We recall that also from a historical point of view, functional analysis was initially stimulated by the investigation of integral equations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143402287377,"sku":"NLS9783764328719","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783764328719.jpg?v=1757584316"},{"product_id":"quaternionic-analysis-and-elliptic-boundary-value-problems-book-sprssig-9783034872973","title":"Quaternionic Analysis and Elliptic Boundary Value Problems","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143426044177,"sku":"NLS9783034872973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034872973.jpg?v=1757584428"},{"product_id":"numerische-verfahren-der-nichtlinearen-optimierung-book-peter-spellucci-9783034872157","title":"Numerische Verfahren der nichtlinearen Optimierung","description":"Dieses Lehrbuch bietet eine umfassende Darstellung derjenigen Verfahren zur Losung nichtlinearer Optimierungsprobleme, die nach dem gegen- wartigen Wissensstand als zuverlassig und effizient gelten. In the last two decades, some extensions of the finite difference method to irregular networks have been described and applied to solving boundary value problems in science and engineering. For instance, box integration methods have been widely used in electro- nics. There are several papers on this topic, but a comprehensive study of these methods does not seem to have been attempted. The purpose of this book is to provide a systematic treatment of a generalized finite difference method on irregular networks for solving numerically elliptic boundary value problems. Thus, several disadvan- tages of the classical finite difference method can be removed, irregular networks of triangles known from the finite element method can be applied, and advantageous properties of the finite difference approxima- tions will be obtained. The book is written for advanced undergraduates and graduates in the area of numerical analysis as well as for mathematically inclined workers in engineering and science. In many cases, these models are also nonlinear and it is the study of nonlinear symmetric models that has been the basis of much recent work. Although systematic studies of nonlinear problems may be traced back at least to the pioneering contributions of Poincare, this remains an area with challenging problems for mathematicians and scientists. Phenomena whose models exhibit both symmetry and nonlinearity lead to problems which are challenging and rich in complexity, beauty and utility. In recent years, the tools provided by group theory and representation theory have proven to be highly effective in treating nonlinear problems involving symmetry. By these means, highly complex situations may be decomposed into a number of simpler ones which are already understood or are at least easier to handle. In the realm of numerical approximations, the systematic exploitation of symmetry via group repre- sentation theory is even more recent. In the hope of stimulating interaction and acquaintance with results and problems in the various fields of applications, bifurcation theory and numerical analysis, we organized the conference and workshop Bifurcation and Symmetry: Cross Influences between Mathematics and Applications during June 2-7,8-14, 1991 at the Philipps- University of Marburg, Germany.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144007545105,"sku":"NLS9783034875387","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034875387.jpg?v=1757586979"},{"product_id":"numerical-methods-of-approximation-theory-vol-6-numerische-methoden-der-approxim-book-collatz-9783034871884","title":"Numerical Methods of Approximation Theory, Vol.6 \\ Numerische Methoden der Approximationstheorie, Band 6","description":"Brannigan, M. The conference was aUended by ninety scientists: about one third from France, from Germany and from third countries each. They all contributed to a highly interesting and stimulating meeting. The scientifique program consisted of four survey lectures of a more tutorical character and of 61 contributed papers covering almost all areas of optimization. In addition two informal evening sessions and a plenary discussion on further developments of optimization theory were organized. One of the main aims of the organizers was to indicate and to stress the increasing importance of optimization methods for almost all areas of science and for a fast growing number of industry branches. We hope that the conference approached this goal in a certain degree and managed to continue fruitful discussions between -theory- and -applications-. Equally important to the official contributions and lectures is the -nonmeasurable- part of activities inherent in such a scientific meeting. Here the charming and inspiring atmosphere of a place like Irsee helped to establish numerous new contacts between the participants and to deepen already existing ones. It is probably more efficient to present such material after a strong grasp of (at least) linear algebra and calculus has already been attained -but at this stage those not specializing in numerical mathematics are often interested in getting more deeply into their chosen field than in developing skills for later use. An alternative approach is to incorporate the numerical aspects of linear algebra and calculus as these subjects are being developed. Long experience has persuaded us that a third attack on this problem is the best and this is developed in the present two volumes, which are, however, easily adaptable to other circumstances. The approach we prefer is to treat the numerical aspects separately, but after some theoretical background. This is often desirable because of the shortage of persons qualified to present the combined approach and also because the numerical approach provides an often welcome change which, however, in addition, can lead to better appreciation of the fundamental concepts. For instance, in a 6-quarter course in Calculus and Linear Algebra, the material in Volume 1 can be handled in the third quarter and that in Volume 2 in the fifth or sixth quarter.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144576758033,"sku":"NLS9783034872317","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034872317.jpg?v=1757589575"},{"product_id":"general-inequalities-5-book-walter-9783034871945","title":"General Inequalities 5","description":"The Fifth International Conference on General Inequalities was held from May 4 to May 10, 1986, at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (Black Forest, Germany). The organizing committee consisted of W.N. Everitt (Birmingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec served efficiently an'd enthusiastically as secretary to the con- ference. The meeting was attended by 50 participants from 16 countries. In his opening address, W. Walter had to report on the death of five colleagues who had been active in the area of inequali- ties and who had served the mathematical community: P.R. Beesack, G. Polya, D.K. Ross, R. Bellman, G. Szego. He made special mention of G. Polya, who had been the last surviving author of the book InequaZities (Cambridge University Press, 1934), who died at the age of 97 years and whose many and manifold contributions to mathematics will be recorded elsewhere, in due course. Inequalities continue to play an important and significant role in nearly all areas of mathematics. The interests of the participants to this conference reflected the many different fields in which both classical and modern inequalities continue to influence developments in mathematics. In addition to the established fields, the lectures clearly indicated the importance of inequalities in functional analysis, eigenvalue theory, con- vexi ty., number theory, approximation theory, probability theory, mathematical prograrnrning and economics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144675619089,"sku":"NLS9783034871945","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034871945.jpg?v=1757590039"},{"product_id":"mathematical-optimization-of-water-networks-book-alexander-martin-9783034807852","title":"Mathematical Optimization of Water Networks","description":"Water supply- and drainage systems and mixed water channel systems are networks whose high dynamic is determined and\/or affected by consumer habits on drinking water on the one hand and by climate conditions, in particular rainfall, on the other hand. According to their size, water networks consist of hundreds or thousands of system elements. Moreover, different types of decisions (continuous and discrete) have to be taken in the water management. The networks have to be optimized in terms of topology and operation by targeting a variety of criteria. Criteria may for example be economic, social or ecological ones and may compete with each other. The development of complex model systems and their use for deriving optimal decisions in water management is taking place at a rapid pace. Simulation and optimization methods originating in Operations Research have been used for several decades; usually with very limited direct cooperation with applied mathematics.   The research presented here aims at bridging this gap, thereby opening up space for synergies and innovation. It is directly applicable for relevant practical problems and has been carried out in cooperation with utility and dumping companies, infrastructure providers and planning offices. A close and direct connection to the practice of water management has been established by involving application-oriented know-how from the field of civil engineering. On the mathematical side all necessary disciplines were involved, including mixed-integer optimization, multi-objective and facility location optimization, numerics for cross-linked dynamic transportation systems and optimization as well as control of hybrid systems.   Most of the presented research has been supported by the joint project „Discret-continuous optimization of dynamic water systems“ of the federal ministry of education and research (BMBF).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144700227857,"sku":"NLS9783034807852","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783034807852.jpg?v=1757590154"},{"product_id":"computational-optimal-control-book-roland-bulirsch-9783034896504","title":"Computational Optimal Control","description":"Resources should be used sparingly both from a point of view of economy and eco- logy. Thus in controlling industrial, economical and social processes, optimization is the tool of choice. In this area of applied numerical analysis, the INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF AUTOMATIC CONTROL (IFAC) acts as a link between research groups in universities, national research laboratories and industry. For this pur- pose, the technical committee Mathematics of Control of IFAC organizes biennial conferences with the objective of bringing together experts to exchange ideas, ex- periences and future developments in control applications of optimization. There should be a genuine feedback loop between mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers and software developers. This loop should include the design, application and implementation of algorithms. The contributions of industrial practitioners are especially important. These proceedings contain selected papers from a workshop on CONTROL Ap- PLICATIONS OF OPTIMIZATION, which took place at the Fachhochschule Miinchen in September 1992. The workshop was the ninth in a series of very successful bien- nial meetings, starting with the Joint Automatic Control Conference in Denver in 1978 and followed by conferences in London, Oberpfaffenhofen, San Francisco, Ca- pri, Tbilisi and Paris. Almost the entire range of problems in this field of research was studied and further explored as part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) priority program 1253 on Optimization with Partial Differential Equations from 2006 to 2013. The investigations were motivated by the fascinating potential applications and challenging mathematical problems that arise in the field of PDE constrained optimization. New analytic and algorithmic paradigms have been developed, implemented and validated in the context of real-world applications. In this special volume, contributions from more than fifteen German universities combine the results of this interdisciplinary program with a focus on applied mathematics. The book is divided into five sections on Constrained Optimization, Identification and Control, Shape and Topology Optimization, Adaptivity and Model Reduction, Discretization: Concepts and Analysis and Applications. Peer-reviewed research articles present the most recent results in the field of PDE constrained optimization and control problems. Informative survey articles give an overview of topics that set sustainable trends for future research. This makes this special volume interesting not only for mathematicians, but also for engineers and for natural and medical scientists working on processes that can be modeled by PDEs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52146627477777,"sku":"NLS9783319050829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319050829.jpg?v=1757598143"},{"product_id":"linear-spaces-and-approximation-lineare-raume-und-approximation-book-butzer-9783764309794","title":"Linear Spaces and Approximation \/ Lineare Räume und Approximation","description":"The publication of Oberwolfach conference books was initiated by Birkhauser Publishers in 1964 with the proceedings of the conference 'On Approximation Theory', conducted by P. In addition, there is a section devoted to new and unsolved problems, based upon two special problem sessions augmented by later communications from the participants. Corresponding to the nature of the conference, the aim of the organizers was to solicit both specialized and survey papers, ranging in the broad area of classical and functional analysis, from approximation and interpolation theory to Fourier and harmonic analysis, and to the theory of function spaces and operators. It was the aim of the organizers of the meeting to bring together experts from different areas in the broad field of free boundary problems, where a certain emphasis was given to the numerical treatment and optimal control of free boundary problems. However, during the conference also a number papers leading to important new theoretical insights were presented. The strong connection between theory and applications finds its reflection in this monograph which contains papers of high theoretical and numerical interest, as well as applications to important practical problems. Many of the contributions are concerned with phase transition phenomena, a field which was of particular importance during the meeting; topics like spinodal decomposition, shape memory alloys, crystal growth and flow through porous media are addressed. Another field of major interest during the con- ference was fluid flow; also this field is addressed in this volume. The volume opens with a contribution by H. W. Alt and I. Pawlow. In their paper the problem of spinodal decomposition is treated in the non-isothermal situation. For the first time the existence of a weak solution to the corresponding system of evolution equations could be proved. The results of some numerical experiments are also reported. The TDS are now competitive in terms of efficiency and accuracy with the well-studied numerical algorithms for the solution of initial value ODEs. Moreover, various a posteriori error estimators are presented which can be used in adaptive algorithms as important building blocks. The new class of EDS and TDS treated in this book can be considered as further developments of the results presented in the highly respected books of the Russian mathematician A. A. Samarskii. It is shown that the new Samarskii-like techniques open the horizon for the numerical treatment of more complicated problems.
