In the wake of the revolutionary wars, the figure of the cross-dressed woman proliferated in novels, plays, popular tales and real-life accounts that circulated throughout Germany. Sometimes appearing in soldier's garb and engaging in battle like Joan of Arc, other times donning overalls and plying a trade, the female cross-dresser tested the revolutionary ideas of freedom and equality, Perhaps her most provocative challenge, however, was to contemporary notions of what it meant to be a woman or a man. Elisabeth Krimmer explores this challenge by tracing the motif of cross-dressing in novels and plays by 18th-century German writers. Revolutionary ideology wasn't the sole motivation for the presence of cross-dressed female characters in literary works. Many writers were responding to a paradigm shift in the definition of gender, whereby female and male bodies were no longer considered merely different configurations of identical physical structures, but as wholly different from one another.  Analysing the figure of the cross-dresser allows insights into the discursive strategies and vagaries that surrounded the introduction of the new gender model, in which women's bodies became the primary anchors of their underprivileged position. Krimmer shows that female writers expressed their resistance to the new body-gender axis through their portrayal of cross-dressed characters. By creating heroines, whose gender identity is defined through performance, not biology, women writers refuted a theory that conceives of anatomy as destiny. Revealing the similarities between this concept and postmodern ideas of gender performance, Krimmer brings our 18th-century heritage to bear on current issues of body politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50361658638609,"sku":"CIN0814331459VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0814331459.jpg?v=1750849124"},{"product_id":"schiller-s-wound-book-stephanie-hammer-9780814328620","title":"Schiller's Wound","description":"One of the founders of German national literature, Friedrich A. Schiller (1759-1805) was that country's most important neoclassical playwright. In Schiller's Wound, Stephanie Hammer shows that Schiller was also one of the first self-conscious explorers of psychological trauma in the theatre.In a revisionist reading of Schiller, Hammer re-envisions him as a psychologically tormented artist and argues for his pivotal role in the developing relationship between pain, spectacle and capital in modern Anglo-European drama, literature and film. Each chapter offers an in-depth reading of one of Schiller's plays: The Robbers, Don Carlos, the Wallenstein trilogy, The Bride of Messina and the fragment Demetrius, all of which mark important moments of crisis in Schiller's career. Interwoven with her interpretations of the plays are passages from Schiller's private correspondence and references to such diverse sources as Freud's case studies, Samuel Beckett's plays, German and American films, and Neil Gaiman's graphic novel The Sandman.  Through this interplay, Hammer uses Schiller's work to illustrate the ways in which we think about art and money and the ways in which we have come to understand the theatre and other media as venues for the display of personal pain. Schiller's Wound is a work that should not only entice scholars but also serve as a useful resource for instructors who wish to reintroduce this important writer into their curricula. As the 200th anniversary of Schiller's death approaches, it should provide a valuable context for further discussions of his work and its impact.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50367411912977,"sku":"CIN0814328628VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0814328628.jpg?v=1751107606"},{"product_id":"walter-benjamin-and-the-corpus-of-autobiography-book-gerhard-richter-9780814328804","title":"Walter Benjamin and the Corpus of Autobiography","description":"Walter Benjamin is considered one of the most significnt writers and theorists in 20th-century Western culture. In consideration of questions concerning spatial transformations in and around Weimar cinema, the eight essays in this volume, though some more explicitly than others, have Kracauer as their interlocutor. The first major critic of classic German cinema, Kracauer is patron of the optics that seeks insight on the periphery, inviting the analysis of those other spaces that are implicated, if not present, in the films themselves. The films treated in this volume include such Expressionist mainstays as Lang's \"\"Metropolis\"\" and Murnau's \"\"Nosferatu\"\" as well as generally less familar works such as Ruttman's \"\"Berlin, Symphony of a City\"\", Jessner's \"\"Backstairs\"\", Berger's \"\"Day and Night\"\" and the mountain films of Fanck and Riefenstahl. Among the \"\"hidden stages\"\" analyzed are amusement parks, carnivals, department stores, train compartments, city streets, the womb, the theatre, the chamber, basement apartments - and ultimately Neubabelsberg, the gargantuan studio-complex near Berlin where so many of these peripheral spaces came to be simulated. With references that range from set architecture to Christmas celebrations, from the poetry of Rilke to chamber music, from the introduction of sound to Macy's parades, and from an \"\"urban unconscious\"\" to a \"\"cinematic sublime\"\", \"\"Peripheral Visions\"\" is a collection that should be of interest to students and scholars of film and German cultural studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50554698760465,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50554699448593,"sku":"GOR013994981","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332952092945,"sku":"NLS9780814329283","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0814329284.jpg?v=1763223552"},{"product_id":"myth-of-power-and-the-self-book-walter-h-sokel-9780814326084","title":"The Myth of Power and the Self","description":"A collection of essays on Franz Kafka by the foremost scholar of Kafka. Franz Kafka (1883-1924) has come to be one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. Born into a Jewish middle-class family in Prague, Bohemia, Kafka was in many ways a solitary figure, isolated in his own mind from any true community of friendship and alienated from his own Jewish heritage. Kafka's writings reflect his inner turmoil, and his novels became a symbol of the anxiety and alienation that pervaded much of twentieth-century society. The Myth of Power and the Self brings together Walter Sokel's most significant essays on Kafka written over a period of thirty-one years, 1966-1997. This volume begins with a discussion of Sokel's 1966 pamphlet on Kafka and a summary of his 1964 book, Tragik und Ironie (Tragedy and Irony), which has never been translated into English, and includes several essays published in English for the first time. Sokel places Kafka's writings in a very large cultural context by fusing Freudian and Expressionist perspectives and incorporating more theoretical approaches - linguistic theory, Gnosticism, and aspects of Derrida - into his synthesis. This superb collection of essays by one of the most qualified Kafka scholars today will bring new understanding to Kafka's work and will be of interest to literary critics, intellectual historians, and students and scholars of German literature and Kafka.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135283228945,"sku":"NLS9780814326084","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780814326084.jpg?v=1763220014"},{"product_id":"words-from-abroad-book-katja-garloff-9780814332450","title":"Words from Abroad","description":"When Paul Celan was charged with plagiarism in 1960, the ensuing public debate in West Germany threw the poet into a major personal crisis even though most German critics immediately came to his defense. This crisis coincided with a transformative moment in the history of Holocaust remembrance, its first generational reimagining in the wake of a number of highly publicized criminal trials. Words from Abroad takes its lead from this disjunction between public ritual and private crisis to chart the emergence of a new literary diaspora, examining German Jewish writers who were dislocated in the course of World War II and began rewriting their own displacement more than a decade after the war. The idea of diaspora had ceased to be a constructive element of Jewish culture in Germany during the nineteenth-century process of emancipation and assimilation, though this book argues that it becomes crucial in articulating the possibility of German Jewish identity after the Holocaust. Along with the works of Paul Celan, Words from Abroad examines selected German Jewish writers such as Peter Weiss and Nelly Sachs. The study of these authors is framed by theoretical reflections on the play of distance and proximity in German Jewish intellectuals after the Holocaust, including Theodor W. Adorno, Jean Amery, and Gunther Anders. Drawing on postcolonial theory, diaspora studies, trauma theory, and psychoanalytical theory, author Katja Garloff offers an original and nuanced reading of the way in which these writers, in the wake of the Holocaust, experienced and variously created a vision of dispersion as both traumatic and productive. Words from Abroad is an important tool in investigating the works of these German Jewish writers and thinkers, but it is also a contribution to the interdisciplinary scholarship on trauma and displacement itself.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135783661841,"sku":"NLS9780814332450","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780814332450.jpg?v=1763224522"},{"product_id":"aby-warburg-and-anti-semitism-book-charlotte-schoell-glass-9780814332559","title":"Aby Warburg and Anti-Semitism","description":"Looks at the life and writings of cultural critic Aby Warburg through the prism of Warburg's little-known political views. Modern forms of culture and consumption appearing around this time not only enhanced pleasure in physical sensations but also enabled imaginary sensations in the absence of actual stimuli. Desiring, rather than having, became an important mode of cultural consumption, linking products and practices with self-image, serving to express social identity in an increasingly more anonymous society - a society where the modern freedom of choice brought with it a loss of tradition and the stability attached to it. Fabricating Pleasure traces the creation of this unique form of domestic culture, showing how the bourgeoisie of late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Germany fused consumption with high culture. Author Karin Wurst illuminates the sociohistorical context and the emergence of the modern middle class, its differentiation, and its conception of culture. In her thoughtful analysis, Wurst reconstructs the roles of Empfindsamkeit (sensibility) and the new love paradigm, examining the change in mentality they fostered through the reconceptualization of pleasure and entertainment. The book also discusses the relationship between print culture (using Bertuch's Journal des Luxus und der Moden as its prime example) and an increase in social mobility. From art and music to fashion and travel, Wurst places these popular forms of entertainment and pleasurable diversion in their social and historical contexts and also shows how they have remarkable bearing on present-day debates on cultural literacy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52151510139153,"sku":"NLS9780814331316","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780814331316.jpg?v=1763220353"},{"product_id":"history-fiction-and-germany-book-brent-o-peterson-9780814332009","title":"History, Fiction, and Germany","description":"This study chronicles how German nationalism developed simultaneously with the historical novel and the field of history, both at universities and in middlebrow reading material. The 20th century seemed destined, according to one art historian, to become not an age of reason, but a visual age in which images would afford more enlightenment and intellectual pleasure than the written or spoken word. Writing in 1948, Fritz Saxl was referring not only to the rise of cinematic art, but also to a major transformation in the way his predecessors had begun to view culture in general - as a process of image-making. In this text, Louis Rose offers an exploration of these changes as they occurred in three key areas of inquiry at the turn of the century: art history, classics, and the emerging field of psychoanalysis. Approaching all three fields as cultural sciences, Rose compares their shared interests in cultural surfaces and depths, in what is evident and what is hidden. In all three he aims to reveal a rudimental concern with the links among image, drama, and movement. On the one hand, art historians, classicists, and psychoanalysts sought to relate the creations of artists to the products of collective cultural enactments such as ritual, and theatre. On the other, they explored the creative and psychological process by which mental images became translated into visual pictures conveying life and motion.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52736725713169,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52736726008081,"sku":"CIN0814328601G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780814328606.jpg?v=1763411185"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/kritik-german-literary-theory-and-cultural-studies-series-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
