The book is broken into three parts. Part I examines how Latina\/o ELLs have been historically underserved in public schools and how this has contributed to numerous educational inequities. Part II examines bilingualism, biliteracy, and dual language education as an effective model for addressing the inequities identified in Part I. Part III examines research on dual language education in a large urban school district, a high-performing elementary school that serves a high proportion of ELLs along the Texas-Mexico border, and best practices for principals and teachers.  This volume explores the potential and realities of dual language education from a historical and social justice lens. Most importantly, the book shows how successful programsand schools need to address and align many related aspects in order to best serve emergent bilingual Latino\/as: from preparing teachers and administrators, to understanding assessment and the impacts of financial inequities on bilingual learners. Peter Sayer, The Ohio State University, USA","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50480057385233,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50480057745681,"sku":"CIN3030108309G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522601148689,"sku":"NLS9783030108304","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030108309.jpg?v=1750773113"},{"product_id":"supporting-the-learning-of-chinese-as-a-second-language-implications-for-languag-book-joseph-lo-bianco-9783031661341","title":"Supporting the Learning of Chinese as a Second Language: Implications for Language Education Policy","description":"The research in this volume takes account of the context of policy promoting Chinese as a second language (CSL) in several countries and regions, (Australia, East Asia and South-East Asia), and the wider social context of multilingual and multicultural societies.    Furthermore, this book reports results of two research studies which investigated how to develop effective strategies to promote learners’ motivation and the motivational developments of adult learners in real-life settings, helping to overcome gaps in this under-researched area.    Findings reported in this book have been scientifically examined and found to be effective in enhancing the learners’ CSL proficiency, increasing their learning motivation, and addressing the need for a diversity of targeted approaches to CSL. Most are applicable across preschool to secondary levels. The theoretical grounding of this research work represents a new direction for research in teaching Chinese as a second language.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51129170788625,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51129172230417,"sku":"NIN9783031661341","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153232392465,"sku":"NGR9783031661341","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031661346.jpg?v=1751221058"},{"product_id":"language-policy-at-the-supranational-level-book-huan-yik-lee-9783031733994","title":"Language Policy at the Supranational Level","description":"This book provides a critical examination of the English-only policy of ASEAN, the Association of the ten Southeast Asian nations. It presents the ASEAN language policy and planning (LPP) journey through time:  rationalising English as the sole working language for ASEAN in the past, followed by a critique of the status quo considering regional complexities and dynamics, and finally exploring alternative linguistic futures for ASEAN and the Southeast Asian region. The book also offers methodological innovations in LPP research by utilising the largely underrepresented and undervalued agency of 'people with expertise'.    The authors argue for a multilingual commitment towards pursuing an agency of 'projectivity' in co-constructing imagined LPP possibilities to reflect the region's socio-historical context, socio-political intricacies, and socio-linguistic diversity. The way forward is a more inclusive, equitable, balanced, and responsible approach to LPP, both regionally and globally.    The book engages with both deconstructive and constructive paradigms, offering promising proposals for dealing with key language issues and contemporary challenges. This book will be interesting reading for language and education scholars, sociolinguists, historians, political scientists, policymakers, diplomats, language activists, media personnel, business leaders, tourism players and other language policy and planning actors operating at national, sub-national and supra-national levels.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51129173803281,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51129174753553,"sku":"NIN9783031733994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52152848285969,"sku":"NGR9783031733994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031733991.jpg?v=1751252621"},{"product_id":"language-power-and-the-economics-of-education-in-morocco-book-mohammed-errihani-9783031515965","title":"Language, Power, and the Economics of Education in Morocco","description":"This volume provides a comprehensive understanding and assessment of language policy in education in Morocco. All aspects related to language policy and the effect on the education sector for more than half a century in Morocco are included in the book. The book traces the role that the linguistic medium has played in the educational system in Morocco since its independence from the French in 1956. It examines the role that various language policies have played in the educational sector and provides an in-depth analysis of the most recent language policy recognizing Berber, making it an official language and a mandatory subject in all schools. As such, this book is on the cutting edge of language policy as it also examines a policy that is still being rolled out.  It also addresses the role of political pressure, and social and political conflict on language policy in Morocco, and how the linguistic medium has failed to guarantee the basic goals of equity, equality and social justice that assure a decent future for every citizen.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51728328196369,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51728328786193,"sku":"NGR9783031515965","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/303151596X.jpg?v=1751349781"},{"product_id":"language-policy-in-the-people-s-republic-of-china-book-minglang-zhou-9789401740326","title":"Language Policy in the People's Republic of China","description":"The volume sheds light on the complexity of language policy making and implementing as well as on the politics and ideology of language in contemporary China.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52126703255825,"sku":"NLS9789401740326","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789401740326.jpg?v=1757478040"},{"product_id":"perspectives-on-academic-persian-book-abbas-aghdassi-9783030756123","title":"Perspectives on Academic Persian","description":"This book focuses on the idea of Academic Persian in the growing competition of many Middle Eastern languages to produce and highlight their academic discourse.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52129872183569,"sku":"NLS9783030756123","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030756123.jpg?v=1757499317"},{"product_id":"language-policy-beyond-the-state-book-maarja-siiner-9783319529912","title":"Language Policy Beyond the State","description":"Language Policy beyond the State invites readers to (re-)consider the ways language policy is constituted, taken up, and researched if we look within and past the state.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138179035409,"sku":"NLS9783319529912","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319529912.jpg?v=1757561278"},{"product_id":"language-education-programs-book-zia-tajeddin-9783031387531","title":"Language Education Programs","description":"This book delves into the realm of effective language education programs, examining them from both macro and micro-policy-making perspectives. It focuses on the key participants - the State, the language activists and the islanders - in the language debate that has taken place across the island since its purchase by France. This book is informed by recent work on language planning, both theoretical and relating to specific case studies. At the same time, it engages with trends in sociolinguistics over the past decades, which have included language planning in their investigations of languages in contact, language obsolescence and language death. A central premise of this book is that the three discrete categories of participants in the language debate are closely interrelated and that the status and position of Corsican in relation to French cannot be understood without a thorough exploration of these three strands. Our focus will therefore be on language policies as these are explicitly articulated either in the form of constitutions or public proclamations made by political leaders. We do not RAPPA AND WEE: LANGUAGE POLICY AND MODERNITY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA 2 deny that language policies can be implicit (Spolsky, 2004:s) since ideologies about language are prevalent regardless of whether these lead to overt policy formulations or not. However, our interest is in the attempts by Southeast-Asian nation-states to maintaidlegitimize particular 'nationalist imaginations' (cf. Anderson, 1991), and such attempts are best seen in the kinds of explicit declarations made by agents of the state. It seems clear that our objective includes the question of how these nation-states manage the spread of the English language, since English is often seen as the language of modernity par excellence (May, 2001).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52147027116305,"sku":"NLS9781461499923","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781461499923.jpg?v=1757599152"},{"product_id":"planning-chinese-characters-book-shouhui-zhao-9780387485744","title":"Planning Chinese Characters","description":"One of the remarkable things about Chinese language policy over the millennia has been the power of the writing system to unite what are disparate if related spoken varieties. Moreover, it offers a unique vantage point on the tie between language and culture. While linguists and ethnographers grapple with defining the relationship of language to culture, or of language and culture to identity, the Soviets knew that language is an integral and inalienable part of culture. The former Soviet Union provides an ideal case study for examining these relationships, in that it had one of the most deliberate language policies of any nation state. This is not to say that it was constant or well-conceived; in fact it was marked by contradictions, illogical decisions, and inconsistencies. Yet it represented a conscious effort on the part of the Communist leadership to shape both ethnic identity and national consciousness through language. As a totalitarian state, the USSR represents a country where language policy, however radical, could be implemented at the will of thegovernment. Furthermore, measures (such as forced migrations) were undertaken that resulted in changing population demographics, having a direct impact on what is a central issue here: the very nature of the Soviet population. That said, it is important to keep in mind that in the Soviet Union there was a difference between stated policy and actual practice. There was no guarantee that any given policy would be implemented, even when it had been officially legislated.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52149225586961,"sku":"NLS9781402012983","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402012983.jpg?v=1757606134"},{"product_id":"language-education-policy-the-arab-minority-in-israel-book-m-amara-9781402005855","title":"Language Education Policy: The Arab Minority in Israel","description":"In this book we will explore in more detail some aspects of the Arab-Jewish divide, which raise fundamental questions regarding the place of the Arabs and Arab language education in the Jewish State. More specifically, the aim of this book is to describe and analyze language education in the Arab society in Israel from the establishment of the state in 1948 until today. For this purpose, internal processes, which are embedded within the Arab population itself were examined, such as the socio-economic condition of the population, the diglossic situation in the Arabic language, and the wide use of Hebrew among Arabic speakers. Furthermore, the book also deals with external processes such as the policy of control and inspection of the Ministry of Education over the Arab education system in general and on language education in particular, the dominance of Hebrew, and the definition and perception of Israel as a Jewish State. The influence of both internal and external processes on language education and learning achievements will also be extensively discussed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52149600321809,"sku":"NLS9781402005855","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402005855.jpg?v=1757607335"},{"product_id":"language-and-institutional-identity-in-the-post-apartheid-south-african-higher-e-book-leketi-makalela-9783030859602","title":"Language and Institutional Identity in the Post-Apartheid South African Higher Education","description":"This book examines the intersections between education, identity formation, and language in post-apartheid South Africa with specific attention to higher education.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52151605002513,"sku":"NLS9783030859602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030859602.jpg?v=1757613925"},{"product_id":"planning-chinese-characters-book-shouhui-zhao-9781441943064","title":"Planning Chinese Characters","description":"One of the remarkable things about Chinese language policy over the millennia has been the power of the writing system to unite what are disparate if related spoken varieties. In that meeting they sketched out plans for a questionnaire survey to be distributed in Hamburg schools that would investigate secondary school pupils access to and use of media, their access to and use of English, and their attitudes concerning these and related topics. A year later several hundred young people in selected schools completed the questionnaire. The findings from this initial investigation appeared in a book chapter by Hasebrink, Berns, and Skinner (1997) and were reported on at conferences in North America and Europe. Eventually Kees de Bot (The Netherlands) was inspired to join Berns and Hasebrink (Ewart Skinner had moved on to other projects). Eventually we decided to extend and refine the project by building upon its interdisciplinary and international potential. From this point on the study gained increasing momentum and scope and individual team members contributed variously to what became a major undertaking. The size and complexity of the project made it not only time intensive, but time extensive as well. With limited sources of financial support, progress was slow, at times arduous, and the gap between data collection and finished manuscript was greater than anticipated. Distribution of labor among us kept the task manageable.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52332082430225,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332082954513,"sku":"NLS9781441942333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781441942333.jpg?v=1758150478"},{"product_id":"language-policy-in-the-peoples-republic-of-china-book-minglang-zhou-9781402080388","title":"Language Policy in the Peoples Republic of China","description":"The volume sheds light on the complexity of language policy making and implementing as well as on the politics and ideology of language in contemporary China.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52333118259473,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52333118718225,"sku":"NLS9781402080388","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402080388.jpg?v=1758153769"},{"product_id":"english-language-education-policy-in-the-middle-east-and-north-africa-book-robert-kirkpatrick-9783319467764","title":"English Language Education Policy in the Middle East and North Africa","description":"This volume offers insights on English language education policies in Middle Eastern and North African countries, through state-of-the-art reports giving clear assessments of current policies and future trends, each expertly drafted by a specialist. We do not RAPPA AND WEE: LANGUAGE POLICY AND MODERNITY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA 2 deny that language policies can be implicit (Spolsky, 2004:s) since ideologies about language are prevalent regardless of whether these lead to overt policy formulations or not. However, our interest is in the attempts by Southeast-Asian nation-states to maintaidlegitimize particular 'nationalist imaginations' (cf. Viewing language use and language policy as dynamic social and ideological processes, the book presents Ethiopia as an example of language policy creation and implementation over time, in a highly volatile political context. The case of Ethiopia is unique in that different language policies and practices were put in place as the country’s leaders changed through political takeovers. Declared language policies were not always implemented, and those implemented were often protested. The book starts with an overview and review of language policy and planning, followed by a chapter on the history of such planning in Ethiopia. It then presents the methodology used for the study, and examines the appropriation of hegemonic LPP, patterns of resistance, schools and public sites as centers of resistance,and the emergence and development of specific patterns of language use in different regions of the country. The book ends with recommendations for future research, and draws the overall conclusion  that since LPP is a dynamic and multilayered contextual process, official or de facto language policy is often undermined by overt or covert unofficial language policies, ideologies, mechanisms, and agents that result in different patterns of language use.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52409968820497,"sku":"NLS9783030639068","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030639068.jpg?v=1758776367"},{"product_id":"language-and-language-in-education-planning-in-the-pacific-basin-book-rb-kaplan-9789048161935","title":"Language and Language-in-Education Planning in the Pacific Basin","description":"Language and Language-in-Education Planning in the Pacific Basin examines and reviews the ecological context (including, e.g., the historical, political and educational issues) of language planning in 14 countries in the Pacific basin: Japan, the two Koreas, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Since 2008, Japan has signed the EPAs with Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam to recruit migrant nurses and eldercare workers and manage their mobility by means of pre-employment language training and the Japanese-medium licensure examinations. Through the analysis of these language management devices, this book demonstrates that the EPAs are a manifestation and representation of contemporary language issues intertwined particularly with pressing issues of Japan's social aging and demographic change. This book challenges the notion of macro-level power in language policy research and offers evidence that, in democratic frameworks, macro-level power is not absolute. It is not uniform across policy domains, but rather susceptible to pressure, especially in the domains of healthcare and social welfare.  This book makes three important contributions to the theory of language policy by:      Arguing for the need to reconceptualise macro-level power Proposing ‘Categories of Differentiation’ as a new analytical tool for policy research Demonstrating that socio-political changes are reflected at the textual level     This book is of interest to researchers working on language policies and those investigating language related legislation across different policy domains, to practitioners and policymakers in language policy, as well as to graduate students conducting comparative policy research.      “This is a much valued and timely book making a strong case for the subject of language policy across Europe and India.  The large comparative case studies of four distinctive states across Europe and India in a simple descriptive mode makes the reading of this book enjoyable.  The domains of administration, legislation, healthcare and social welfare are undoubtedly novel ways to deal within the concept of language policy in a wider sense.  The author uses discourse analysis to bring out the relationship between intention, explanation and interpretation of a phenomenon like language policy and its implementation. The social diversity as expressed in linguistic mapping is well captured in the novel idea of “categories of differentiation”both as a normative methodological tool and its historical-empirical manifestation.” — Asha Sarangi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52427458281745,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52427459002641,"sku":"NLS9783031094637","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031094637.jpg?v=1759161059"},{"product_id":"minority-languages-from-western-europe-and-russia-book-svetlana-moskvitcheva-9783030243425","title":"Minority Languages from Western Europe and Russia","description":"This book offers a comparative approach within a general framework of studies on minority languages of Western Europe and Russia and former Soviet space, focusing on linguistic, legal and categorization aspects. Moreover, it offers a unique vantage point on the tie between language and culture. While linguists and ethnographers grapple with defining the relationship of language to culture, or of language and culture to identity, the Soviets knew that language is an integral and inalienable part of culture. The former Soviet Union provides an ideal case study for examining these relationships, in that it had one of the most deliberate language policies of any nation state. This is not to say that it was constant or well-conceived; in fact it was marked by contradictions, illogical decisions, and inconsistencies. Yet it represented a conscious effort on the part of the Communist leadership to shape both ethnic identity and national consciousness through language. As a totalitarian state, the USSR represents a country where language policy, however radical, could be implemented at the will of thegovernment. Furthermore, measures (such as forced migrations) were undertaken that resulted in changing population demographics, having a direct impact on what is a central issue here: the very nature of the Soviet population. That said, it is important to keep in mind that in the Soviet Union there was a difference between stated policy and actual practice. There was no guarantee that any given policy would be implemented, even when it had been officially legislated.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52474907197713,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52474908311825,"sku":"NLS9789048162932","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789048162932.jpg?v=1759841847"},{"product_id":"language-policy-in-taiwan-in-the-21st-century-book-chen-cheng-chun-9783031934896","title":"Language Policy in Taiwan in the 21st Century","description":"This book provides insiders' views of how Taiwan's monolingual language policy has evolved into multilingual language policies since its peaceful transition to a democratic society in the late 20th century. At the same time, it engages with trends in sociolinguistics over the past decades, which have included language planning in their investigations of languages in contact, language obsolescence and language death. A central premise of this book is that the three discrete categories of participants in the language debate are closely interrelated and that the status and position of Corsican in relation to French cannot be understood without a thorough exploration of these three strands. This volume will appeal to researchers and students in French Studies, sociolinguistics, and especially language policy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52476942811409,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52476943827217,"sku":"NLS9789048178636","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789048178636.jpg?v=1759844848"},{"product_id":"language-education-policy-the-arab-minority-in-israel-book-m-amara-9789048160068","title":"Language Education Policy: The Arab Minority in Israel","description":"In this book we will explore in more detail some aspects of the Arab-Jewish divide, which raise fundamental questions regarding the place of the Arabs and Arab language education in the Jewish State. More specifically, the aim of this book is to describe and analyze language education in the Arab society in Israel from the establishment of the state in 1948 until today. For this purpose, internal processes, which are embedded within the Arab population itself were examined, such as the socio-economic condition of the population, the diglossic situation in the Arabic language, and the wide use of Hebrew among Arabic speakers. Furthermore, the book also deals with external processes such as the policy of control and inspection of the Ministry of Education over the Arab education system in general and on language education in particular, the dominance of Hebrew, and the definition and perception of Israel as a Jewish State. The influence of both internal and external processes on language education and learning achievements will also be extensively discussed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52477751623953,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52477752770833,"sku":"NLS9789048160068","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789048160068.jpg?v=1759846123"},{"product_id":"early-language-learning-policy-in-the-21st-century-book-subhan-zein-9783030762537","title":"Early Language Learning Policy in the 21st Century","description":"The contributors to the volume are international researchers specialising in language policy and early language learning and their contributions aim to advance scholarship on early language learning policies and inform policymaking at the global level.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52478778245393,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52478779588881,"sku":"NLS9783030762537","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030762537.jpg?v=1759847693"},{"product_id":"language-policy-beyond-the-state-book-maarja-siiner-9783319850337","title":"Language Policy Beyond the State","description":"Language Policy beyond the State invites readers to (re-)consider the ways language policy is constituted, taken up, and researched if we look within and past the state. Contributors to this edited volume draw attention to language policy as always in the making, focusing on agency, on-the-ground practices, and ideologies. The chapters of the book reveal how simultaneous, and at times contradicting, language policies exist within a state and explore the complex roles played by families, businesses, educational institutions, and media in generating and appropriating these policies.  By moving away from language policy analysis concerned primarily with how official state policies address well-defined language problems, some of the contributions of the volume highlight how the problems themselves can be ideological artifacts or are discursively constructed in language ideological debates that are provoked by changes in the geopolitical situation in the region.  Using qualitative and descriptive research, the book uses Estonia as a setting to examine the ways historic and contemporary populations navigate language policies in both local and transnational spaces. As a whole, the collection speaks eloquently and powerfully to current efforts to understand and map the ways multiple institutions and individuals—not just the state—play an active role in forming and taking up language policies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52481647477009,"sku":"NLS9783319850337","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319850337.jpg?v=1759852033"},{"product_id":"english-language-education-policy-in-asia-book-robert-kirkpatrick-9783319794006","title":"English Language Education Policy in Asia","description":"This volume offers comprehensive 'state-of-the-art' overviews of educational policies concerning the teaching of English in a large number of Asian countries. All aspects related to language policy and the effect on the education sector for more than half a century in Morocco are included in the book. The book traces the role that the linguistic medium has played in the educational system in Morocco since its independence from the French in 1956. It examines the role that various language policies have played in the educational sector and provides an in-depth analysis of the most recent language policy recognizing Berber, making it an official language and a mandatory subject in all schools. As such, this book is on the cutting edge of language policy as it also examines a policy that is still being rolled out.  It also addresses the role of political pressure, and social and political conflict on language policy in Morocco, and how the linguistic medium has failed to guarantee the basic goals of equity, equality and social justice that assure a decent future for every citizen.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52488861516049,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52488862728465,"sku":"NLS9783031515934","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031515934.jpg?v=1759877839"},{"product_id":"english-language-education-policy-in-the-middle-east-and-north-africa-book-robert-kirkpatrick-9783319835839","title":"English Language Education Policy in the Middle East and North Africa","description":"This volume offers insights on English language education policies in Middle Eastern and North African countries, through state-of-the-art reports giving clear assessments of current policies and future trends, each expertly drafted by a specialist. LADO is a highly controversial topic, and a relatively new branch of forensic linguistics that is used by most European and some non-European governments. When asylum seekers cannot submit documentary proof of their origin, their language can be analysed in order to assess whether their linguistic profile is in accordance with their stated origin. Around 10,000 such language analyses take place annually. This volume is based on the series of meetings of the Language and Asylum Research Group held between 2010 and 2012 and convened by the editors, and offers a state-of-the art perspective from researchers, practitioners, policymakers and stakeholders working on or with LADO.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52599896768785,"sku":"NLS9783030077013","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030077013.jpg?v=1761087613"},{"product_id":"language-choice-in-postcolonial-law-book-richard-powell-9789811511721","title":"Language Choice in Postcolonial Law","description":"This book discusses multilingual postcolonial common law, focusing on Malaysia’s efforts to shift the language of law from English to Malay, and weighing the pros and cons of planned language shift as a solution to language-based disadvantage before the law in jurisdictions where the majority of citizens lack proficiency in the traditional legal medium. The focus of this book is the methodology implemented and the results obtained over the course of a year-long action research project on language and education in St. Eustatius, one of the islands of the Dutch Caribbean, commissioned by the educational authorities in both St. Eustatius and the European Netherlands. On the island, the language of instruction is Dutch, however, outside of the classroom most students only speak English and an English-lexifier Creole. The research project was set up to address the negative impact on school success of this disparity. It included a community-based sociolinguistic study that actively involved all of the stakeholders in the education system on the island. This was complemented by a multi-pronged set of research strategies, includinga language attitude and use survey, a narrative proficiency test, in depth interviews, and a review of the relevant literature. The resulting report and recommendations were accepted by the government, which is now in the process of changing the language of instruction.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52619046355217,"sku":"NLS9783030232221","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030232221.jpg?v=1761534818"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/language-policy-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
