The topics covered within this volume include return migration trends, the pivotal roles and contributions of return migrants, the social, psychological, and policy challenges faced by returnees, emerging issues stemming from return migration in their home countries, and the public and formal responses to return migration and the reintegration of returnees, and the roles of crises in these areas. This edited volume brings together diverse perspectives of academic researchers, practitioners, and policymakers on return migration. The book features cases of multiple non-Western countries in Asia (Philippines, China, India), Europe (Lithuania, Turkey, \u0026amp; Ukraine), the Middle East and North Africa (Morocco), and South America and the Caribbean (Mexico, Peru \u0026amp; Dominican Republic). Findings provide a unique opportunity to critically explore current thinking on return migration and investigate the relationship between migration and crisis from varying policy and operational viewpoints. This book, hence, attends to practitioners to develop creative solutions to both global and local policies and practices of return migration management in emerging market countries, which will support and accommodate both their returnees and residents amid challenging times.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51728352968977,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51728353362193,"sku":"NGR9783031535642","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031535642.jpg?v=1751095279"},{"product_id":"borders-and-mobility-in-turkey-book-shoshana-fine-9783319701196","title":"Borders and Mobility in Turkey","description":"In the last two decades, Turkey has witnessed a variety of bordering interventions rooted in its problematisation as variously \"transit,\" \"destination,\" \"European,\" \"Muslim\" and \"safe.\" This book brings into focus seemingly disparate actors involved in such interventions, from the EU and international organisations to missionaries, security professionals and migrants themselves. Focusing on ageing female migrants from Latvia in the UK and other European countries, this book is based on fifty life-history interviews with women aged 40s-60s. Empirical chapters concentrate on functional well-being in migration, which includes access to the economic citizenship of work, income, pensions, and accommodation, and on psychosocial well-being, and explores Latvian women’s experiences of intimate citizenship in migration. In addition, the authors’ research challenges the trope of vulnerability which generally surrounds the framing of older migrants’ lives. It gives a complex picture of individual journeys of migrant women, and in a radical departure from the miserabilist or culturalist approach through which women are usually viewed, the book argues for a politically and socially aware, activist feminism that is attuned to what border-obsessed migration policies actually do to women. The research presented in this book is based on multi-sited fieldwork that led the author to closely follow migration survivors. The book depicts the journey of women as they experience brutal separations, have to make heart-wrenching decisions and end up wandering from one place to another, but also as they make acquaintances and find new opportunities. The first-person accounts collected here demonstrate that the reasons behind these women’s decision to leave are anything but simple and linear: they combine various forms of persecution and oppression, a desire for autonomy and a yearning for new horizons, as well as changes in gender relations in their countries of origin. The book further explores the daily lives of women in reception centres, where they are in limbo, their journey as if “suspended,” as they wait for this Europe rejecting them to acknowledge their presence. These women live on and “in” the border – a border that relentlessly haunts them and pursues them everywhere they go. Boredom is constant and, likewise, racism and marginalisation processes are pervasive. At the same time, this study shows that these women are also resisting, strategising, taking charge of their own destinies and journeys, and looking for a way out.Written from the standpoint of a geographer, this study accordingly puts the space of everyday life front and centre. Such a space acts as an impediment to these women’s journeys: it generates a “moralscape” of waiting, which plays a key role in these women’s daily lives. However, it can also help these women gain greater autonomy, thus empowering them, and it may be subverted through various tactics and stratagems, which sometimes take the form of spatialised strategies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52152386289937,"sku":"NGR9783031450990","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031450990.jpg?v=1757616475"},{"product_id":"voices-of-the-disenfranchized-book-veysi-dag-9783031468117","title":"Voices of the Disenfranchized","description":"Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. However, they are neither recognized as a distinct community of stateless immigrants nor as a distinct European ethnic or religious minority. They are frequently utilized as data sources without having a voice to address their challenges. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. The book seeks to answer what drives their departures from their home countries, how they escape, what shapes their lives in receiving cities, and finally, how homeland affairs influence their lives in new environments. By addressing all these themes, this book presents refugee-centric knowledge by and with refugees as objects and subjects of their narratives and transcends neoliberal humanitarian, state-centric, and colonial hegemonic epistemes thatlimit refugees' epistemic capabilities and viewpoints.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153166922001,"sku":"NGR9783031468117","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031468117.jpg?v=1757619139"},{"product_id":"political-humanitarian-borderwork-on-the-southern-european-border-book-roberto-calarco-9783031405068","title":"Political-Humanitarian Borderwork on the Southern European Border","description":"This book focuses on the role mainstream humanitarian organizations have in the functioning of the border management system on the southern European border (i.e. Italy). In particular, the author analyses the mainstream humanitarian organizations and NGOs (i.e. Red Cross, the UNHCR, Medici per I Diritti Umani – MEDU, Terre des Hommes and Oxfam) and their role within and beyond the implementation of the so-called ‘hotspot approach’ in Sicily. This work suggests that a vision of humanitarian action as just anti-political and complicit with migration control can be questioned. This book suggests that a) mainstream organizations have been able to politicize their positioning and actions vis-à-vis authorities when migration policies have been tightened; b) mainstream organizations’ political borderwork has helped to promote incremental change in the status quo rather than a radical one. Finally, this book suggests that the discourses and practices of mainstream and grassroots actors seems to be characterized by similar contradictions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153175834897,"sku":"NGR9783031405068","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031405068.jpg?v=1757619179"},{"product_id":"politics-of-development-and-forced-mobility-book-sutapa-chattopadhyay-9783030939007","title":"Politics of Development and Forced Mobility","description":"This book broadly analyzes the displacement or forced relocation of Adivasis Indigenous peoples from the Narmada Valley in India due to the construction and execution of a large development project, the Sardar Sarovar project, which has substantially transformed Adivasi lives, roles, practices, and autonomy, and increased their dependence on capital, market, unsustainable farming practices and urban jobs. Globally, Indigenous communities live within a legacy of environmental dispossession due to economic development that dismantles their mental and physical well-being and a land-based way of life. Appropriation, dispossession, and accumulation is historical and contemporary. Stories of Adivasi people illustrate the horrors of systematic marginalization, in general, and Adivasi women’s reduced autonomy and economic sufficiency, in particular. Key to mention here is that decades of resistance, protests, counter-struggles, marches, direct action did not overturn bureaucraticregressions or structural and direct violence towards marginalized or resettled Adivasi people, but enabled networks of solidarity arguing their rights and access. The book does not attest to state or corporate power, but validates Adivasi agency and autonomy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52352894238993,"sku":"NLS9783030939007","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030939007.jpg?v=1758182371"},{"product_id":"sugarcane-labor-migration-in-brazil-book-terry-ann-jones-9783030356736","title":"Sugarcane Labor Migration in Brazil","description":"1. This proposal found strong opposition from some of the Visegrad Group countries, including Poland, which expressed their reluctance to the relocation scheme securitizing the political narrative towards refugees. On the contrary, in 2022, during the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, Poland strengthened an “open door policy”, showing a humanitarian approach towards Ukrainian refugees. This book uses a public goods theoretical framework to examine the various public goods characteristics of refugee protection in such scenarios. It is argued that the publicness and character of refugee protection is socially shaped by norms and identities. States perceive refugee protection, including benefits and costs, in different ways. The author focuses his analysis on the security\/humanitarian dichotomy in states’ perceptions of refugees to investigate the accompanying vision of the inherent costs and benefits. The conceptual part of the book provides conclusive support of an alternative constructivist mode in public goods theory for understanding refugee protection burden-sharing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418581889297,"sku":"NGR9783031440397","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52761016107281,"sku":"NIN9783031440397","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"post-humanitarian-border-politics-between-mexico-and-the-us-book-v-squire-9781137395887","title":"Post\/humanitarian Border Politics between Mexico and the US","description":"The author assesses the politics of different humanitarian interventions in the Mexico-US border region developing a unique perspective on the significance of people, places and things to contemporary border struggles.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52428171903249,"sku":"NLS9781137395887","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52746984849681,"sku":"NIN9781137395887","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137395887.jpg?v=1759163326"},{"product_id":"syrian-crisis-syrian-refugees-book-juline-beaujouan-9783030350185","title":"Syrian Crisis, Syrian Refugees","description":"This edited volume investigates the political and socioeconomic impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Lebanon and Jordan, and these countries' mechanisms to cope with the rapid influx of refugees.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52452100604177,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52452101128465,"sku":"NLS9783030350185","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030350185.jpg?v=1759363592"},{"product_id":"exclusion-and-forced-migration-in-central-america-book-carlos-sandovalgarca-9783319519227","title":"Exclusion and Forced Migration in Central America","description":"Each year, thousands of Central Americans leave their countries and walk across Mexico, seeking to reach the United States. Who are their main characters? How has mobility of ideas and persons contributed to it? Why has the Mediterranean become the cradle of civil resistance? And how can one make sure that what has begun bears fruit? The author discusses how a strategic action of social movements and activists from both Europe and the Arab world can build the basis for a grassroots project for integration between the two shores, where mobility is at the core: on the one hand, mobility of ideas, activists, men and women of culture and other key-players, and trans-national strategizing; on the other hand, challenging the paradigms of visa policies and striving for a space of safe human mobility as one of the steps of a grassroots Mediterranean citizens project. The ‘democratic transition’ initiated by the Tunisian Revolution led to the emergence of a ‘vibrant civil society’ as a new actor in the implementation of migration policies. In a country where migration issues are highly politicised and have strongly entered the public space, civil society is now included in the EU-Tunisia negotiation process and is assigned the role of an intermediary for the implementation of controversial European policies related to sedentarisation of the Tunisian population and to the construction of Tunisia as a ‘country of destination’. The chapters trace the implementation of the EU migration hotspot approach across space and time, from the maritime Aegean border to the islands (Lesvos and Samos) and from the islands to the Greek mainland. They do so through the lenses of peoples’ refusal to succumb to categories that get reified as identities through the hotspot approach, such as that of the ‘deserving refugee’, the ‘undeserving economic migrant’, the ‘translator’, the ‘volunteer’, the ‘tourist’ and the ‘researcher’. The first-person accounts collected here demonstrate that the reasons behind these women's decision to leave are anything but simple and linear: they combine various forms of persecution and oppression, a desire for autonomy and a yearning for new horizons, as well as changes in gender relations in their countries of origin. The book further explores the daily lives of women in reception centres, where they are in limbo, their journey as if suspended, as they wait for this Europe rejecting them to acknowledge their presence. These women live on and in the border - a border that relentlessly haunts them and pursues them everywhere they go. Such a space acts as an impediment to these women's journeys: it generates a moralscape of waiting, which plays a key role in these women's daily lives. However, it can also help these women gain greater autonomy, thus empowering them, and it may be subverted through various tactics and stratagems, which sometimes take the form of spatialised strategies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52619770593553,"sku":"NLS9783031450969","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031450969.jpg?v=1761536799"},{"product_id":"voices-of-the-disenfranchized-book-veysi-dag-9783031468087","title":"Voices of the Disenfranchized","description":"Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. Finally, this book suggests that the discourses and practices of mainstream and grassroots actors seems to be characterized by similar contradictions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52675036774673,"sku":"NLS9783031405037","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031405037.jpg?v=1762300983"},{"product_id":"bordering-and-governmentality-around-the-greek-islands-book-aila-spathopoulou-9783031085888","title":"Bordering and Governmentality Around the Greek Islands","description":"This book focuses on processes of bordering and governmentality around the Greek border islands from the declaration of a refugee crisis in the summer of 2015 up until the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52675088220433,"sku":"NLS9783031085888","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037326893329,"sku":"NIN9783031085888","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031085888.jpg?v=1762301095"},{"product_id":"externalising-migration-governance-through-civil-society-book-sabine-dini-9783030395773","title":"Externalising Migration Governance Through Civil Society","description":"This book investigates how the externalisation of EU migration policies is implemented in Tunisia after the fall of the Ben Ali regime in 2011 through the involvement of civil society organisations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52686138245393,"sku":"NLS9783030395773","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030395773.jpg?v=1762327300"},{"product_id":"sanctuary-regions-and-the-struggle-for-belonging-book-zeina-sleiman-long-9783030448844","title":"Sanctuary Regions and the Struggle for Belonging","description":"This book argues that local governments and institutions across the state of California that offer various forms of sanctuaries to undocumented immigrants create sanctuary regions.
