The course, which was a NATO Advanced Study Institute, included lectures and workshops presented by experts in the new field of phannacoepidemiology. The material covered includes various approaches to spontaneous reporting of adverse drug reactions, including aggregate approaches, such as those used in France, and detailed analyses of individual reports, such as that done in The Netherlands and in Sweden. Also, included are studies using traditional epidemiology methods. In addition, modern pharmacoepidemiology makes considerable use of automated databases. As such, information is presented on their use as well. Phannacoepidemiology started in hospitals and some of the newest work in the field is returning to the hospital as a site for studies. Material on these topics was presented as well. Finally, selected new methodologic developments were outlined in specific examples presented that were of regulatory and commercial importance. This new field of phannacoepidemiology is exploding in interest internationally. Evidence of this is the increasing development of pharmacoepidemiology programs in industry, medical schools, pharmacy schools, and schools of public health. Also, there is a new International Society ofPhannacoepidemiology. Practitioners in this field tend to specialize in either analyses of spontaneous reporting or the use of formal epidemiologic techniques.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49628670329105,"sku":"GOR012681802","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52331372445969,"sku":"NLS9780306440991","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0306440997.jpg?v=1751134083"},{"product_id":"targeting-of-drugs-4-book-gregory-gregoriadis-9780306449109","title":"Targeting of Drugs 4","description":"The NATO Advanced Studies Institute series \"Targeting of Drugs\" was originated in 1981. It is now a major international forum, held every two years in Cape Sounion, Greece, in which the present and the future of this important area of research in drug delivery is discussed in great depth. Previous ASIs of the series dealt with drug carriers of natural and synthetic origin, their interaction with the biological milieu, ways by which the latter influences such interaction, strategies by which milieu interference curtailing the function of drug carriers is circumvented and, more recently, with the application of drug carriers for the delivery of peptides and proteins. The present book contains the of the 7th NATO ASI \"Targeting of Drugs: Advances in System Constructs\", proceedings held in Cape Sounion during 24 June -5 July 1993. The aim of the ARW on Microvascular, rheological, metabolic and heat-transfer aspects of the heart: relation to ischaemia and thrombosis, convened in Chateau de Bonas, July 4-11, 1982, was to describe functions and performance of the heart in an interdisciplin- ary effort, involving cardiologists, pathologists, biochemists, haemorheologists, physiologists, pharmacologists and bioengineers; to explore interactions between such subfields as blood rheology, micro- circulation and ischaemia of the myocardium, heat transfer, heat work and performance as a pump, effect of -metabolites and ion transfer, mechanism of sudden death, protein synthesis and protein molecular transformations.  One of the purposes of the Convenor was to relate clinical haemorheology to the heart energetics and heart metabolism. This was only partly established, as difficulties of communications between different fields, difficulties of semantics and of specialized out- looks could not be overcome within a -few days. Nevertheless, a gate was opened for communications interchange in the future. There was even a problem within each specialty, and as is rather common, quite diverse views have been expressed. This, of course, is quite normal in the progress of science.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49800057454865,"sku":"CIN0306412780G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0306412780.jpg?v=1751196447"},{"product_id":"ascomycete-systematics-book-david-l-hawksworth-9780306448829","title":"Ascomycete Systematics","description":"Proceedings of a NATO ARW held in Paris, France, May 11-14,  1993.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50348105203985,"sku":"CIN0306448823VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52149512929553,"sku":"NLS9780306448829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52734853316881,"sku":"NIN9780306448829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0306448823.jpg?v=1751164585"},{"product_id":"neurobiology-book-franco-conti-9781461377061","title":"Neurobiology","description":"Understanding how the brain works is undoubtedly the greatest challenge for human intelligence and one of the most ambitious goals of contemporary science. We are certainly far from this goal, but significant advancements in several fields of Neuroscience and Neurobiology are being obtained at an increasing pace. The NATO ASI School in Neurobiology, held in Erice May 2-12,1995, as the 23rd Course of the International School of Biophysics, provided an update on three basic topics: Biophysics and Molecular Biology ofIon Channels, Sensory Transduction, and Higher Order Functions. Current knowledge on these subjects was covered by formal lectures and critical discussions between lecturers and participants. This book collects original contributions from those scientists who attended the School. Many students presented their results in poster sessions, steering lively informal discussions. A selection of these contributions is also included. A major portion of the program of the School was devoted to a general overview of current trends of thought and experimental approaches in neurobiology, emphasising the importance of understanding molecular aspects of the elementary events underlying sensory transduction and processing in the nervous system, without indulging however in a pure reductionistic view of such complex phenomena. Recent studies of molecular biology and the electrophysiology of heterologously expressed ionic channels, have shed new light on the molecular mechanisms underlying ionic permeation of excitable membranes and its regulation by physical and chemical parameters.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51027590086929,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51027592544529,"sku":"NIN9781461377061","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52675926720785,"sku":"NLS9781461377061","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1461377064.jpg?v=1751306252"},{"product_id":"eukaryotic-cell-function-and-growth-book-jacques-dumont-9781461343240","title":"Eukaryotic Cell Function and Growth","description":"The day it rained in Wepion ...The NATO Course on Regulation of Function and Growth of Eukaryo- tic Cells by Intracellular Cyclic Nucleotides was organized in Wepion (Belgium) from September 23 to October 1, 1974, by L. In the 1950s to 1960s, the regular meetings of Physarum workers in North America were commonly held in Wisconsin. Strong new scientific initiatives in Physarum have grown up independently, from the disciplines of genetics, cytology, photo biology, and biophysics, in countries scattered over the world from Japan to Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Turkey, and Great Britain. Infusion of the technical power of contemporary molecular biology--in particular, gene cloning and monoclonal antibodies--has brought these dispersed investigators into mutual communication. Of the approximately 5,000 species so far identified, only a few hundred are crop pests, causing serious damage or transmitting diseases to growing crops and harvestable produce in most countries. Their fringed wings confer a natural ability to disperse widely, blown by the wind. Their minute size and cryptic behavior make them difficult to detect either in the field or in fresh vegetation transported during international trade of vegetables, fruit and ornamental flowers. Many species have now spread from their original natural habitats and hosts to favorable new environments where they often reproduce rapidly to develop intense damaging infestations that are costly to control. Over the past decade there have been several spectacular examples of this. The western flower thrips has expanded its range from the North American continent to Europe, Australia and South Africa. Thrips palmi has spread from its presumed origin, the island of Sumatra, to the coast of Florida, and threatens to extend its distribution throughout North and South America. Pear thrips, a known orchard pest of Europe and the western United States and Canada has recently become a major defoliator of hardwood trees in Vermont and the neighboring states. Local outbreaks of other species are also becoming problems in field and glasshouse crops as the effectiveness of insecticides against them decline.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52122658177297,"sku":"NLS9780306450136","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780306450136.jpg?v=1757441804"},{"product_id":"chaos-in-biological-systems-book-hans-degn-9780306426858","title":"Chaos in Biological Systems","description":"In recent years experimental and numerical studies have shown that chaos is a widespread phenomenon throughout the biological hierarchy ranging from simple enzyme reactions to ecosystems. Although a coherent picture of the fundamental mechanisms responsible for chaotic dynamics has started to appear it is not yet clear what the implications of such dynamics are for biological systems in general. In some systems it appears that chaotic dynamics are associated with a pathological condi- tion. In other systems the pathological condition has regular periodic dynamics whilst the normal non-pathological condition has chaotic dyna- mics. Since chaotic behaviour is so ubiquitous in nature and since the phenomenon raises some fundamental questions about its implications for biology it seemed timely to organize an interdisciplinary meeting at which leading scientists could meet to exchange ideas, to evaluate the current state of the field and to stipulate the guidelines along which future research should be directed. The present volume contains the contributions to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Chaos in Biological Systems held at Dyffryn House, St. Nicholas, Cardiff, U. K., December 8-12, 1986. At this meeting 38 researchers with highly different backgrounds met to present their latest results through lectures and posters and to discuss the applica- tions of non-linear techniques to problems of common interest. . Because ofits effects on brain development, iodinedeficiency is the single most preventable cause of mental retardation in the world. Therefore, the United Nations and the Heads of State of almost all the world's countries represented at the Summit for Children in 1990 adopted resolutions to eradicate the disorders induced by iodine deficiency (ID) by the year 2000. For geological and socio-economic reasons, most of the populations affected by iodine deficiency disorders live in isolated and usually mountainous areas, in pre- industrialized parts ofthe world. The problem of iodine deficiency in Europe has been greatly underestimated in the last decades. After the remarkable studies on the effects of iodine deficiency and their prevention and correction in Switzerland, ID was generally considered no longer a significant public health problem in Europe. However, surveys carried out in the early 1980's under the auspices of the European Thyroid Association, clearly demonstrated the persistence of moderately or even severely affected areas. These surveys also highlighted the lack ofinformation about large parts ofEurope, especially its eastern part. It is only quite recently, following major changes in international relations and thanks to the support of UNICEF, WHO, the International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders and the European Thyroid Association, that more extensive surveys have been conducted in several parts of Europe hitherto almost unexplored. These surveys showed that most European countries were iodine deficient.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128043860241,"sku":"NLS9780306444104","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780306444104.jpg?v=1757489131"},{"product_id":"role-of-cell-interactions-in-early-neurogenesis-book-anne-m-duprat-9781468412055","title":"The Role of Cell Interactions in Early Neurogenesis","description":"The workshop entitled The Role of Cell Interactions in Early Neurogenesis was held at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques in Cargese, Corsica on May 29th to June 3rd, 1983. One of the major topics of this conference was neural induction, that is, the first step in neurogenesis. For once this delay is not the fault of any of the authors only the editors are to blame. Many of the workers in the field of fibre toxicology became convinced by the middle 1980's that the worst of the furore over asbestos was over although we were left with an intriguing problem - how does asbestos cause disease? It was expected that the future impact of fibres on human health would be very small since asbestos exposure would be controlled and there was little chance that man-made fibres would prove haz- ardous. These man-made fibres are much thicker than asbestos and, in most cases, they are less durable in the body. Both of these properties are believed to make them much less likely to cause disease. However many of us had fallen into the habit of calling these materials asbestos substitutes and thus they have acquired a little of the notoriety at- tached to the natural fibrous minerals. Very few of these man-made fibres are actually used as replacements for asbestos. Asbestos was not suitable for the uses to which the insulation wools are usually put and the ceramic fibres are replacements for fire brick not asbestos which is destroyed at the temperatures at which these materials are used.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128101826833,"sku":"NLS9781468413656","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468413656.jpg?v=1757489514"},{"product_id":"experimental-and-theoretical-advances-in-biological-pattern-formation-book-hans-g-othmer-9781461360339","title":"Experimental and Theoretical Advances in Biological Pattern Formation","description":"This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO ARW on 'Biological Pattern Formation' held at Merton College, University of Oxford, on 27-31 August, 1992. The objective of the workshop was to bring together a select group of theoreticians and experimental biologists to present the latest results in the area of biological pattern formation and to foster interactiqn across dis- plines. The workshop was divided into 5 main areas: (i) limb development, (ii) Dictyostelium discoideum, (iii) Drosophila, (iv) cell movement, (v) g- eral pattern formation. We thank all the participants for their contributions, enthusiasm, and willingness to collaborate. There was a genuine, open, and extremely fru- ful interaction between the experimentalists and theoreticians which made the workshop a success. We also thank The Welcome Trust for providing additional funding. The local organization fell mainly on Denise McKittrick and Beverley Bhaskhare at the Mathematical Institute, Oxford, and Jeanette Hudson and the staff of Merton College. We greatly appreciate their help and patience. Considerable yield losses have been attributed to cyst nematodes attacking potatoes, sugar beet, soybean and cereals. Because of the protective cyst that is formed, which encloses the eggs, they pose special problems in their control and also in preventing their distribution in soil from infested areas. There has been much research on many aspects of the biology of cyst nematodes and the large number of publications are testimony to their importance as crop pests and of the interest of nematologists in the group. Nevertheless, they continue to pose problems because of the complexity of their phylogeny and taxonomy and there is still much to be investigated on their biology, particularly with those aspects which relate to improving the effectiveness of control. In many respects the biology of the various cyst nematode species is similar, although with variations due todifferent interactions with hosts and geographical location. Thus, research on any one species has general applicability and this is particularly so with regard to evaluation of control measures, or to the methodology of soil sampling for the assessment of populations prior to growing crops.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128421085457,"sku":"NLS9781461293187","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781461293187.jpg?v=1757490905"},{"product_id":"cell-regulation-by-intracellular-signals-book-stephane-swillens-9781468477207","title":"Cell Regulation by Intracellular Signals","description":"In 1980, the IVth International Cyclic Nucleotide Conference was held in Brussels. As this meeting attracted many investigators involved in cyclic nucleotides and calcium role in intracellular regulation, it was thought that this opportunity could be used to organize, prior to the Congress, an in-depth introductory course on the subject. This was carried out as a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The participants included Ph. D. students and M. D. s engaged in a research training, but also fully trained and well known researchers who wanted a refresher course on the whole subject. During the course, most of the participants and lecturers asked to be provided with a text summarizing the basic lectures of the course. This book was therefore conceived as a basic textbook on the regulation and action of intracellular signal molecules, concentrating mainly on cyclic nucleotides and calcium. It was deliberately kept at a basic level. We would therefore be happy if it could be used as an introduction for interested M. D. s or Ph. D. s working in other fields or entering this field and as a general refresher for researchers interested in the subject. For this reason, very general schemes have been asked of the authors, along with reading lists of available reviews rather than extensive bibliographies. This meeting brought together some of the most distinguished re- searchers in the fields of thermal injury, the immune system and lipid mediator biochemistry. It is well known that there is a substantial impairment of the immune response during sepsis, burn, trauma and other kinds of shock. These conditions are characterized by a massive inflammatory process which occurs during the early phase following injury. Among the various mediators released at this time are 1euko- trienes, thromboxane, histamine and platelet-activating factor. This latter autocoid possesses potent proinf1ammatory properties and toge- ther with the other mediators may account for some of the post-injury pathophysi 01 ogi ca 1 phenomena such as extravasati on, hypotensi on, chemotaxis...It is of great interest to note that recently 1euko- tri enes and plate 1 et-acti vati ng factor have been shown to be potent mediators of the immune response. Thus, the purpose of this meeting was to bring together clinicians, immunologists and biochemists in order to examine and hopefully clarify the putative role of various lipid mediators prominent in the early stages after injury. Section 1 provides a general overview of the physiological con- sequences of burn, sepsis and shock.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128501891345,"sku":"NLS9781461282457","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781461282457.jpg?v=1757491670"},{"product_id":"sensory-transduction-book-antonio-borsellino-9781468458435","title":"Sensory Transduction","description":"Present knowledge of the mechanisms underlying any single sensory modality is so massive as to discourage effort directed towards completeness. The idea underlying the structure of this volume on Sensory transduction was to select just a few topics of general interest, which are currently being investigated and for which a reasonably clear picture is now available. During the last five years there has been a revolution in the way sensory physi- ologists think about transduction, and a series of exciting advances have been made in understanding the basic processes of photo transduction, chemotransduction and mechan- otransduction. It is clear that in many cases the fundamental processes by which nature attains optimization of performance are similar, and that they have much in common with more general processes of signal recognition by living structures. The molecular events underlying the detection of photons by visual cells, the recognition of a given molecule by a chemoreceptor, or the level of a hormone in the extracellular fluid by a target cell, are all very similar, and involve the activation of a sequence of events leading to a secon d messenger. The 20 papers that form the present volume cover various topics in the field of sensory transduction. The number of laboratories engaged in such research is minute compared with those studying comparable problems in animal and bacterial systems, but by then much interesting work had been done and a great momentum was building. It seemed to us that the summer of 1976 would be a good time to review these areas of plant biology for students as well as advanced workers. We outlined a program for a course to colleagues both in Europe and the United States and asked a few potential lecturers if they would be interested. The response was not just positive; it was overwhelm ingly enthusiastic. Those who had some acquaintance with Alsace, and especially with Strasbourg, invariably told us that they had two reasons for being enthusiastic about participating - the subject and the proposed site. The lectures published here* reflect the diversity of current research in plant molecular biology and biochemical developmental biology. Each lecture gives us a glimpse of the depth of questions being asked, and sometimes answered, in segments of this field of investigation. They had in common the belief that evolutionary thinking permeates what biologists do, but that evolution of species and structures cannot be directly experimentally addressed. Although the fossil record can provide some major insights, the inroad to the evolution of the brain is indirect, via comparative anatomy and developmental biology. By identifying similarities and differences between brain structures in the species at hand, comparative anatomy generates hypotheses of evolutionary transformations. By understanding the rules of morphological transformation, developmental biology can, in principle, estimate the likelihood that a given transformation may have actually occurred. These techniques, then as now, comprised mainly a number of pulse methods using laser, flash-lamp or, most recently, synchrotron radiation. In addition, significant developments in the more classical phase approach had also rendered that method popular, utilizing either modulation of an otherwise continuous source or, again recently, the ultra-rapid pulse rate attainable with a synchrotron source. In general terms, time-resolved fluorescence studies are capable, under appropriate conditions, of supplying direct kinetic information on both photophysics and various aspects of molecular, macromolecular and supramolecular structure and dynamics. The nanosecond and sub-nanosecond time-scales directly probed render these techniques particularly appropriate in studying relaxation and fluctuation processes in macromolecules, particularly biopolymers (e. g. proteins, nucleic acids), in supramolecular assemblies such as cell membranes, and in a variety of relatively simpler model systems.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135818658065,"sku":"NLS9781475716368","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781475716368.jpg?v=1757551059"},{"product_id":"delivery-systems-for-peptide-drugs-book-ss-davis-9780306424960","title":"Delivery Systems for Peptide Drugs","description":"Recent years have seen enormous advances in the field of protein and peptide engineering and a greater understanding in the way in which biological response modifiers function in the body. It is now possible through the use of recombinant DNA techniques, or by solid phase protein synthesis, to produce significant quantities of a wide variety of regulatory agents that are therapeutically applicable. The list of these response modifiers expands almost daily to include interferons, macrophage activation factors, neuropeptides and agents that may have potential in cardiovascular disease, inflammation, contraception etc. Prospects to use some of these materials in medicine have reached the stage where products have either been approved by regulatory authorities or are the subject of applications as investigatory drugs or as new therapeutic agents. In some uses the pertinent agent will be administered on an acute basis in the form of a simple injection, as, for example, the use of a tissue plasminogen activator for the treatment of coronary infarct. In other cases regulatory proteins and peptides are indicated for chronic therapy and here they will need to be administered by an appropriate delivery system. Unfortunately, the research on delivery systems for peptides and proteins has not kept pace with the rapid progress in biotechnology and, consequently, there are presently few systems that are entirely appropriate for the administration of macromolecular drugs according to complex dosage regimens, (eg intermittent and pulsed therapy). Indeed, in the early years following the founding of the Society for Psychophysiological Research, electrodennal research so dominated the field that people worried that the society was simply an electrodennal society. Although other psychophysiological techniques have emerged as equally strong contributors to psychophysiology, electrodennal research continues to be important throughout the world. As a result of this massive research investment, there has been great progress in understanding electrodennal phenomena, as well as major advances in recording methods since the phenomenon was discovered.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138159079697,"sku":"NLS9780306445361","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780306445361.jpg?v=1757561171"},{"product_id":"free-radicals-oxidative-stress-and-antioxidants-book-tomris-zben-9780306458132","title":"Free Radicals, Oxidative Stress, and Antioxidants","description":"There has been an explosion of research related to free radicals and antioxidants in recent years, and hundreds of laboratories worldwide are actively involved in many as- pects of free radicals, oxidative stress, and antioxidants. The literature on these topics in- creases exponentially every year. Over the last few years, we have been fortunate to witness a widespread recognition of the important role of free radicals in a wide variety of pathological conditions including diseases such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, ischemia, emphysema, diabetes, radiation injury, cancer, etc. In ad- dition, many laboratories are studying the role of free radicals in the inexorable process of aging. Increased evidence involves free radicals with the etiology of various diseases, thereby suggesting the use of antioxidants as a viable therapeutic approach for the treat- ment of free radical mediated pathologies. Despite these impressive developments, many important aspects of free radical and antioxidant research are open for investigation. It is important to understand the overall mechanisms involved in free radical mediated physiological and pathological conditions. This knowledge will undoubtedly lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches to prevent or control free radical related diseases. It was the first meeting of its kind and was convened as a forum to review and discuss the phylogeny of some of the cell biological functions that underlie nervous system function, such matters as intercellular communication in diverse, lower organisms, and the electrical excitability of protozoans and cnidarians, to mention but two. The rationale behind such work has not necessarily been to understand how the first nervous systems evolved; many of the animals in question provide excellent opportunities for examining general questions that are unapproachable in the more complex nervous systems of higher animals. Nevertheless, a curiosity about nervous system evolution has invariably pervaded much of the work. The return on this effort has been mixed, depending to a large extent on the usefulness of the preparation under examination. For example, work on cnidarians, to many the keystone phylum in nervous system evolution simply because they possess the first nervous systems, lagged behind that carried out on protozoans, because the latter are large, single cells and, thus, far more amenable to microelectrode-based recording techniques. Furthermore, protozoans can be cultured easily and are more amenable to genetic and molecular analyses.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52142557495569,"sku":"NLS9780306435294","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780306435294.jpg?v=1757580793"},{"product_id":"somatic-cell-genetics-book-c-thomas-caskey-9781468442588","title":"Somatic Cell Genetics","description":"This book represents a selected group of manuscripts from lecturers participating in the NATO\/Gulbenkian Foundation sponsored course on Somatic Cell Genetics held May 31 to June 12, 1981 in the Hotel Montechoro in the Algarve of Portugal. The organizing committee was composed of the following members: James S. Clegg Douglas B. Kell Paul A. Srere G. Rickey Welch (Chairman) There has now arisen an edifice of proof that cell metabolism is highly ordered in space and time. The refinement of cytological extraction methodology and the development of more gentle isolation techniques have led to the demonstration of structural organization for most of the primary metabolic pathways. Moreover, the study of isolated enzyme complexes and membranous arrays has revealed unique functional properties of the organized state. Interest in metabolic organization has heightened very recently, due to the emergence of exciting new cytochemical and electron-microscopic advances in the elucidation of the cytOIatrix and associated cell water. The hyaloplasmic space of eukaryotic cells has now been shown to be laced with a dense network of various filamentous structures - one role of which appears to be that of a structural support for the microcompartmentation of metabolic processe The supramolecular organization of certain processes may exceed the physical confines of intracellular particulates, involving large-scale entrainment of the cytoplasm in space and time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143260401937,"sku":"NLS9781468453133","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468453133.jpg?v=1757583674"},{"product_id":"factors-in-formation-and-regression-of-the-atherosclerotic-plaque-book-gustav-rv-born-9781468442700","title":"Factors in Formation and Regression of the Atherosclerotic Plaque","description":"Interest in the field of atherosclerosis research has broadened in recent years. It was concerned mainly with the chemistry and mode of action of substances toxic to higher plants which are produced by pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The role of such substances in specificity was consider- ed but largely in relation to host-specific toxins. In 1973, in light of the success of the 1970 Institute, we decided to plan for another in 1975 and after discussion with col- leagues during the Second International Congress of Plant Pathology, we selected Specificity in Plant Diseases as the theme for the 1975 Institute. Our chief reasons for the choice were that specificity is un- doubtedly the dominant problem in plant pathology and that with the rapid increase during the last decade or so in the diversity and sophistication of biochemical techniques, we should now expect during the next few years much more research on specificity and major ad- vances in our understanding of the mechanisms that control it. It seemed to us that a residential meeting with the advantages and status of a NATO Advanced Study Institute would do much to stimulate interest and research in this most important field. The theme also had the merit of continuity with that of the 1970 Institute.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143312371985,"sku":"NLS9781468427714","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468427714.jpg?v=1757583904"},{"product_id":"bioorganic-chemistry-in-healthcare-and-technology-book-upendra-k-pandit-9781468413564","title":"Bioorganic Chemistry in Healthcare and Technology","description":"Proceedings of a NATO ARW held in Houthalen-Helchteren,  Belgium, September 18-21, 1990","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143313748241,"sku":"NLS9781468413564","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468413564.jpg?v=1757583907"},{"product_id":"new-trends-in-pharmacokinetics-book-aldo-rescigno-9781468480559","title":"New Trends in Pharmacokinetics","description":"The last decade or so has witnessed tremendous progress in methodology in the field of drug development in general and pharmacokinetics in particular. Clinical pharmacokinetics is using new tools for probing into the black box once being ac- cessible only partly through experimental techniques and, mostly through mathemati- cal and computer means. Development of computerized scanning, positron emission tomography (PET), stereoselectivity and other techniques are now enabling investi- gators to have better pictures of the systems they are studying. Mathematical models through computer simulation and statistical estimation, mostly due to easy access be- cause of inexpensive yet powerful personal computers, are enabling us to investigate ultrastructures and their functional connectivity in more detail. As a consequence, new hypotheses are being formed and tested in various related fields. In clinical pharmacokinetics, mostly due to mathematical modeling, more accurate interspecies scaling of pharmacokinetic parameters and dosimetry can be done now-a-days. The concept of a human is a bigger rat does not necessarily fly as a consequence. Pharmacokinetic concepts are becoming powerful tools in meaningful carcinogenic and toxic risk extrapolation of different chemicals in humans. New dose delivery designs are being formulated using pharmacokinetic techniques for different pharmaceutical compounds. Investigations continue in the academia, research institutions, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and agricultural industries in developmental and physiological aspects of different chemicals for the benefit of mankind. The partic- ipants in the Institute dealt with three general areas of membrane study: membrane structure (with emphasis on lipid and protein components), membrane component assembly (with particular emphasis on mitochondria and chloroplasts), and the specialized functions of certain membrane systems. This last area included discussions of topics such as drug transformation, the role of membrane electron transport in the generation of oxygen radicals, the effect of oxygen radicals on cellular homeostasis and on the structure, organization and function of the acetylcholine receptor. Lectures and posters were concerned with two central questions: what is the function of membrane structure in energy transduction and how can energy trans- duction be effectively measured and assessed? This text presents the content of the major lectures and important posters presented during the Institute's program. Although a coherent picture of the fundamental mechanisms responsible for chaotic dynamics has started to appear it is not yet clear what the implications of such dynamics are for biological systems in general. In some systems it appears that chaotic dynamics are associated with a pathological condi- tion. In other systems the pathological condition has regular periodic dynamics whilst the normal non-pathological condition has chaotic dyna- mics. Since chaotic behaviour is so ubiquitous in nature and since the phenomenon raises some fundamental questions about its implications for biology it seemed timely to organize an interdisciplinary meeting at which leading scientists could meet to exchange ideas, to evaluate the current state of the field and to stipulate the guidelines along which future research should be directed. The present volume contains the contributions to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Chaos in Biological Systems held at Dyffryn House, St. Nicholas, Cardiff, U. K., December 8-12, 1986. At this meeting 38 researchers with highly different backgrounds met to present their latest results through lectures and posters and to discuss the applica- tions of non-linear techniques to problems of common interest. . The workshop came at a time when the study of the plasma membrane oxidoreductase activity was beginning to attract more widespread attention from researchers working with both plants and animals. The rapid response of c fos and c myc Proto-oncogene to stimulation of plasma membrane redox activity by external oxidants under- scores a potential role of plasma membrane oxidoreductases in growth control. Other experiments with isolated endosomes in- dicate emerging roles in endocytosis and lytic processes. Primary attention was focused on trans plasma membrane electron transport which brings about the oxidation of cytosolic, NADH, NADPH or other substrates by electron flow across the plasma membrane to external oxidants including ferric iron, semide- hydroascorbate or oxygen. A major theme in the workshop was the relation of this electron flow to pH changes of the cytoplasm or the transfer of protons to the external medium. The presence and role of other oxidoreductases in the plasma membrane was documented, especially in regard to peroxide production. In plant cells this may contribute to cellular defense against invading para- sites. A corresponding function in animals has been long known and extensively discussed but was beyond the scope of this workshop.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143558099217,"sku":"NLS9781468480313","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468480313.jpg?v=1757585027"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/nato-science-series-a-book-series.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
