Esche. It is the first time that either text has been presented in an old-spelling edition with a full critical commentary and textual annotation. The introduction to Tamburlaine gives a detailed account of the plays' sources, stage history, and text. The critical discussion considers the fundamental clashes which Marlowe dramatizes; the differing interpretations - often involved with opposing views of the Renaissance - to which these have given rise; and how new critical methodologies, and recent research into occult traditions in the Renaissance, might affect our reading of Marlowe. The commentary brings together the extensive modern scholarship on the plays, offers some new suggestions about their probable stage action, and cites new material from the period to contextualize Marlowe's treatment of war, medicine, religious controversy, and many other subjects. It also draws on scholarship on Elizabethan pronunciation to clarify Marlowe's poetic rhythms, and uses the revised edition of OED to investigate more fully than has previously been possible the originality and inventiveness of Marlowe's language. The Massacre at Paris survives only in a severely mangled version, which bears many of the signs of a `reported text'; nevertheless, it provides us with the unique example of Marlowe using contemporary French history as his subject matter. The play has been edited from the copy of the Octavo once belonging to Edmund Malone, now held in the Bodleian Library. The edition also presents the single extant leaf of Massacre (Folger MS. J.b.8) in an authoritative form with apparatus, and argues for its legitimacy as a genuine playhouse document, although not Marlowe's autograph.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346332389649,"sku":"CIN0198183208G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51333985960209,"sku":"CIN0198183208VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198183208.jpg?v=1750939594"},{"product_id":"hudibras-book-samuel-butler-9780198710677","title":"Hudibras","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50555396981009,"sku":"GOR006059627","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":51331459907857,"sku":"CIN0198710674A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198710674.jpg?v=1751389237"},{"product_id":"poetical-works-of-christopher-smart-volume-ii-religious-poetry-1763-1771-book-christopher-smart-9780198127673","title":"The Poetical Works of Christopher Smart: Volume II. A Poetical Translation of the Fables of Phaedrus","description":"This is the first literary critical edition of Christopher Smart's translation of Phaedrus' fables, and the first literary commentary on these fables in English. Many of the best known Aesopian fables are in fact the work of the Roman poet Phaedrus, a freed slave of the first century. In the eighteenth century, Phaedrus was in the pantheon of great classical authors, while Christopher Smart was considered the outstanding fabulist of his time. Yet today, while Aesop's fables are a household name, and other works by Smart enjoy critical acclaim, Phaedrus' fables and Smart's translation of them are both largely disregarded or unknown. The fables themselves are familiar yet fresh; their social and political implications often have a startlingly contemporary flavour, and Smart's versions successfully catch the spirit and humour of the Latin originals. This edition provides a full introduction, commentary, and scholarly apparatus, and constitutes a history of the reception of the text. Also presented is the case for a possible new attribution to Smart - the Phaedrus by a Gentleman of the University of Cambridge.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999928193297,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999931207953,"sku":"NIN9780198183600","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089292259601,"sku":"NLS9780198183600","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198183607.jpg?v=1751290049"},{"product_id":"divine-poems-book-jonn-donne-9780198118367","title":"The Divine Poems","description":"A scholarly edition of poems by John Donne. Peter McCullough, a leading expert on religious writing in the early modern period, presents fourteen complete sermons and lectures preached by Andrewes across the whole range of his adult career, from Cambridge in the 1580s to the court of James I and VI in the 1620s. Through a radical reassessment of Andrewes's life, influence, and surviving texts, the editor presents Andrewes as his contemporaries saw, heard, and read him, and as scholars are increasingly recognizing him: one of the most subtle, yet radical critics of mainstream Elizabethan Protestantism, and a literary artist of the highest order. The centuries-old influence of William Laud's authorized edition of Andrewes (1629) is here complicated and contextualized by the full use for the first time of the whole range of Andrewes's works printed before and after his lifetime, as well as manuscript sources. The edition also showcases the aesthetic brilliance of Andrewes's remarkable prose, and suggests new ways for scholars to carry forward the modern literary appreciation of Andrewes famously begun by T. S. Eliot. A full introductory essay sets study of Andrewes on a new footing by placing his works in the context of his life and career, surveying the history of responses to his writings, and summarizing the history of the transmission of his texts. The texts here are edited to high modern critical standards. The exhaustive commentary sets each selection in its historical context, documents Andrewes's myriad sources, glosses important and unfamiliar words and allusions, and translates his frequent quotations from the ancient Biblical languages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51089256612113,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089259594001,"sku":"NIN9780198187745","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52131416736017,"sku":"NLS9780198187745","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53154811216145,"sku":"GOR014784352","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198187742.jpg?v=1772274987"},{"product_id":"complete-works-of-christopher-marlowe-volume-iii-edward-ii-book-christopher-marlowe-9780198122784","title":"The Complete Works of Christopher Marlowe: Volume III: Edward II","description":"Marlowe's highly controversial Edward II concerns the conflicting claims of love and politics, the urgency of homoerotic desire, and the cruelty with which unscrupulous authority can exert control. The boldness with which the work confronts these issues makes it unique in the period, yet this is the first critical edition of the play with full scholarly apparatus for twenty-five years. Richard Rowland's edition presents an old-spelling text which adheres more closely to the first quarto of 1594 than any edition hitherto. The present volume is the third in the Oxford English Texts Complete Works of Christopher Marlowe. A full commentary and introduction contextualize the play and give an entirely original account of the relationship betweeen the play, Marlowe's own age, and events which immediately followed it. By re-examining textual cruces, new interpretative possibilities are opened up, and the play is related to the language and ideas of Marlowe's contemporaries. A generous selection from Holinshed, Marlowe's principal source, is also included. It also contains Cowper's masterpiece, The Task - one of the most approachable of the great English poems. Cowper's blank verse is a supple instrument, capable of every effect, from the parody-georgic on the growing of cucumbers to the visionary conclusion of Book VI. At the centre of the poem stands the poet himself, presented with wry humour and deep poignancy. The texts are based on manuscripts as well as early editions of the poetry, and are supplied with textual annotation and commentary. The Poems of Emily Bronte is the first edition of the poetry to appear with full scholarly apparatus: based wherever possible on the manuscripts, it preserves Bronte's original (sometimes unorthodox) presentation, and records the stages of her revisions. The lack of any surviving manuscript of the novel makes this policy particularly valuable, since it offers the reader the rare chance of watching the writer's creative mind at work. Returning to the original manuscripts has achieved a more accurate text than in any previous edition, resulting in a substantial number of new readings. The Poems records everything that could be deciphered from these difficult manuscripts, including Emily Bronte's spelling, punctuation, and numerous variants, cancellations, and revisions. The enlightening introduction and commentary place the poems in their literary context, and a large number of echoes and parallels from Scott, Byron, Moore, and other authors are identified. The 'Gondal' Poems are related to what is known of that imaginary world in which many poems are set, and a fresh attempt is made to relate these to Emily Bronte's other poems.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51304601354513,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51304605319441,"sku":"NIN9780198126416","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52145173266705,"sku":"NLS9780198126416","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198126417.jpg?v=1751164605"},{"product_id":"plays-book-w-wycherley-9780198118619","title":"The Plays","description":"A scholarly edition of The Plays of William Wycherley by Arthur Friedman. The vitality of Fanshawe's translations evokes a sense of genuine passion felt by the translator and communicated through his re-working of the texts, in addition to providing more mechanical evidence of his linguistic and poetic competence. This volume contains a thorough commentary, containing a significant amount of new information and providing and acute and sympathetic critical assessment of Fanshawe's work. Much of the material in this edition appears in print for the first time and is base on a completely new corpus of authoritative printed material in Britain, America, and Portugal. In many cases, the text is drawn from printed texts marked up by Fanshawe or his immediate family, or from manuscripts originating close to the poet himself, thus representing his works in the form in which they were known in Fanshawe's family and immediate circle. Original spelling and punctuation are, similarly, closely adhered to throughout. Davidson also provides a full and detailed commentary on Fanshaw's less-familiar original poems and incorporates a chronology of Fanshawe's life and works, thus setting his translations in the context of the political realities and quotidian existence of seventeenth-century England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52127206899985,"sku":"NLS9780198117377","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53149785063697,"sku":"NIN9780198117377","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198117377.jpg?v=1757484484"},{"product_id":"complete-works-of-christopher-marlowe-volume-iv-the-jew-of-malta-book-christopher-marlowe-9780198127703","title":"The Complete Works of Christopher Marlowe: Volume IV: The Jew of Malta","description":"Of English Renaissance dramatists, Christopher Marlowe arguably stands second only to Shakespeare in the minds of students, directors, and theatre-goers. Yet despite this fascination with the man and his works, until the present Oxford English Texts edition there has been no complete edition of the works that not only gives them in their original spelling - with full textual apparatus - but also supplies a detailed commentary. Marlow's Jew of Malta - a very popular play in its day, as entries in Henslowe's Diary testify - ranks as one of the most imaginative creations of Elizabethan drama, having no known antecedents for the main events of the plot, and no known counterpart for its protagonist. Here it is presented in a text derived from the 1633 Quarto, with an apparatus of emendations and a full commentary on sources, allusions, and the meaning of difficult passages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52134930383121,"sku":"NLS9780198127703","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52734497030417,"sku":"NIN9780198127703","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198127703.jpg?v=1776941218"},{"product_id":"prose-works-of-fulke-greville-lord-brooke-book-fulke-greville-9780198127468","title":"The Prose Works of Fulke Greville, Lord Brooke","description":"A scholarly edition of prose works by Fulke Greville. Newman wrote the Apologia in 1864, as a reply to Charles Kingsley's attack on his veracity and that of his fellow Roman Catholic clergy; the following year he revised it extensively and thereafter amended new impressions almost until his death in 1890. This fine edition, long unavailable, has been reissued for the centenary; it includes all the variants resulting from Newman's revisions, in both the printed texts and the surviving manuscripts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52149090255121,"sku":"NLS9780198118404","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198118404.jpg?v=1757605663"},{"product_id":"poetical-works-of-christopher-smart-volume-v-the-works-of-horace-translated-into-book-christopher-smart-9780198127727","title":"The Poetical Works of Christopher Smart: Volume V. The Works of Horace, Translated Into Verse","description":"Published here for the first time since 1767, Christopher Smart's verse translation of Horace was made in the prodigiously creative years between his release from the madhouse and his death. The translation strengthens the impression made by all Smart's later verse of a poet of remarkable lyrical virtuosity and boldness of expression. The translation now emerges as testimony to Smart's tireless creativity and poetic energy, and as a significant contribution to the present reappraisal of Horace's influence on English literature. Smart's contemporaries, however, either ignored the project, or treated it with contempt, and it was never reprinted. This edition includes Smart's own critical preface, which is important for its declaration of the writer's principles as translator, and for its unorthodox ideas about poetic language. Karina Williamson's informative introduction discusses Smart's principles and methods in the context of eighteenth century attitudes to the translation of clasical works. Full scholarly apparatus is provided, together with a detailed and clarifying commentary which explains Smart's more obscure passages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52152294113553,"sku":"NLS9780198127727","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198127727.jpg?v=1757616180"},{"product_id":"poetical-works-of-gerard-manley-hopkins-book-gerard-manley-hopkins-9780198118831","title":"The Poetical Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins","description":"This long-awaited complete edition of the poetry offers serious students of Gerard Manley Hopkins far more guidance than has previously been available. The edition is scrupulously and fully annotated, with a commentary and introduction. The texts are arranged chronologically; rhythm is clarified where Hopkins's prosodic marks are eccentric; and thousands of words and phrases are annotated, many for the first time. The neglected early half of his poetic output, before the Wreck of the Deutschland, is given full attention. The substantial introduction gives the history of each album of poetic manuscripts and a critical analysis of Hopkins's prosodic signs and use of accidentals. Because of the ambiguities disclosed, the editor argues that a definitive edition is probably beyond reach, but the new light he throws on the poetry should prove a major stimulus to Hopkins criticism. The headnote to each poem sets out its intellectual or biographical background, and lists critical articles on it, particularly those published after the 1969-70 cut-off date of Dunne's Comprehensive Bibliography of Hopkins. The detailed commentary gives a wealth of illuminating quotations from Hopkins's letters, journals, and other writings, as well as directing the reader to further areas of research. Professor MacKenzie's intimate knowledge of the manuscripts results in separate descriptions of every draft, fair-copy, and significant transcript of each poem. The principal variants are noted, and there are cross-references to the editor's two-volume Poetic Facsimiles of the manuscripts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332933120273,"sku":"NLS9780198118831","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198118831.jpg?v=1758153148"},{"product_id":"poems-of-a-e-housman-book-a-e-housman-9780198123224","title":"The Poems of A. E. Housman","description":"This is the first complete edition of A. E. Housman's poetry, unprecedented in the extent to which it reveals the shaping processes of his poetic thought. To the major poetry of The Collected Poems (1939) it adds a substantial body of light verse and juvenilia, some of it printed, or collected, for the first time; and it revises the texts - particularly the posthumously published poems and notebook fragments - in the light of a comprehensive survey of manuscript and printed sources, recording all textual variants. As well as charting his compositional practices, the edition illuminates the many sources, from Biblical and Classical to contemporary, which influenced Housman - consciously or unconsciously - in his choice of ideas, images, and phraseology. Drawing on the poet's two commonplace books, works he is known to have read, and volumes from his library, the editor's commentary traces the remarkable range of his echoes and allusions, which have never before been explored in such detail. The introduction and commentary also cover dating and other textual matters, information on persons, places, and historical context, and Housman's linguistic usage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52336896966929,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52336897818897,"sku":"NLS9780198123224","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198123224.jpg?v=1758164887"},{"product_id":"poetical-works-of-christopher-smart-volume-iii-a-translation-of-the-psalms-of-da-book-christopher-smart-9780198127710","title":"The Poetical Works of Christopher Smart: Volume III.
