Mitchells served a total of 21 USAAF bomber and reconnaissance squadrons;plus others were operated by the USMC;RAAF and NEIAF.   Most profiles are presented for the first time;alongside markings derivations;including squadron heraldry and codes. Until now there has been a paucity of markings material about many of these units. Each profile is supported by photos and\/or documentation;along with a brief history of each aircraft. Wide-ranging primary reference material is cited including assignment data;wreck reports;squadron records;colour photography;maintenance logs;diaries and factory markings specifications. A brief summary history of each unit and associated markings rationale accompanies the text.  The author is world-renowned for his expertise on the Pacific air war. This Volume 18 covers two British designed types that served with the RAAF in large numbers. A combined total of some 1,280 Beauforts and Beaufighters were delivered and served with fifteen wartime squadrons plus a variety of training and support units.  From late 1942 both types were on the frontlines of the war with Japan. The Beaufort initially had a niche as a torpedo bomber, but subsequently made its mark throughout Australia, New Guinea and the Netherlands East Indies as a light bomber, a maritime patrol aircraft and by undertaking numerous support activities. The Beaufighter was a heavily armed low-level attack fighter that served across the same theatres, often undertaking coastal sweeps to hunt Japanese barges. Later versions introduced the use of rocket projectiles by the RAAF. Remarkably, both types were manufactured in Australia and their immense contribution to the RAAF war effort is often overlooked. Such was the intensity of operations that some 600 young men lost their lives flying Beauforts and Beaufighters both in combat and due to a myriad of accidents. This volume provides technical detail on the various versions of both types and showcases the surprisingly varied markings schemes used by each operating unit. Brief squadron histories are also provided.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52101001543953,"sku":"NGR9780975642382","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52811498651921,"sku":"NIN9780975642382","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780975642382.jpg?v=1757091683"},{"product_id":"pacific-profiles-volume-17-book-michael-claringbould-9780975642375","title":"Pacific Profiles Volume 17","description":"The Pacific Profiles series presents the most accurate WWII profiles of aircraft which served in the Pacific War. This Volume 17 covers Allied types that fought in the brief but intense Netherlands East Indies (NEI) campaign from December 1941 to March 1942. Because of some additional background on Dutch types, the full scope of this volume is from 1940 to 1942.   The Netherlands East Indies saw a diverse and eclectic gathering of Allied aircraft. Many of them were Dutch, serving with the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force (ML-KNIL) and Netherlands Naval Aviation Service (MLD). These included Glenn Martin Model 139 bombers and Hawk 75, CW-21 and Brewster Buffalo fighters, together with Fokker and Dornier seaplanes.  Several squadrons of RAF and RAAF fighters and bombers withdrew from Singapore to continue fighting from Sumatra and then Java. These were augmented by direct reinforcements flown into those locations. These aircraft mainly comprised Hudsons, Blenheims and Hurricanes but there were also more obscure types such as Albacores and Vildebeest.  In addition, American B-17C\/D heavy bombers and PBY flying boats retreated from the Philippines to the NEI. These were reinforced by modern B-17E, LB-30 and PBY aircraft from the US ferried via lengthy African and Pacific air routes. Lastly, small numbers of A-24 dive-bombers and P-40E fighters flown from Australia also joined the fight on Java.  The author is world-renowned for his Pacific air war expertise. Never before have so many diverse types been illustrated with such accuracy and detail, alongside brief histories of their usage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52941705183505,"sku":"NIN9780975642375","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52987716141329,"sku":"NGR9780975642375","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780975642375.jpg?v=1765938630"},{"product_id":"pacific-profiles-volume-19-book-michael-claringbould-9781764193702","title":"Pacific Profiles Volume 19","description":"The Pacific Profiles series presents the most accurate WWII profiles of aircraft which served in the Pacific War. This Volume 19 covers American night fighters that served throughout the Solomons, New Guinea, the Philippines and the wider Pacific from 1943 until the end of the war. The Pacific night fighter story is a fascinating one for aviation enthusiasts, partly because of the obscure and sometimes secretive nature of these operations. Furthermore, it encompasses USAAF, USN and USMAC units.    The technologically advanced P-61 Black Widow eventually served with eight USAAF night fighter squadrons, but by the time it arrived in frontline service the Japanese aerial threat was much diminished. Instead, these squadrons took on a myriad of other tasks, including nocturnal night intruder missions. Prior to the arrival of P-61s in late 1943, the early USAAF night fighter units pioneered use of the makeshift Douglas P-70 as well as radar-equipped P-38s.  An important contribution to Solomons night operations was made by a USMC unit operating the PV-1 Ventura during 1943-44. Meanwhile two USN night fighter squadrons operated the rare radar-equipped F4U-2 Corsair, of which only three dozen were built.  The author is world-renowned for his Pacific air war expertise. Never before have so many diverse types been illustrated with such accuracy and detail, alongside brief histories of their usage and the units which operated them.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53199852929297,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53199852994833,"sku":"NIN9781764193702","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781764193702.jpg?v=1772590706"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/pacific-profiles-ser-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
