A complex and multifaceted endeavour, scholarship on this topic is relatively scarce and widely dispersed across diverse sources. It examines how Pacific policing is shaped by changing state-society  relations in different national contexts and ongoing processes of globalisation.  Particular attention is given to the plural character of Pacific policing, profound  challenges of gender equity, changing dynamics of crime, and the prominence of  transnational policing in resource and capacity constrained domestic  environments. The authors draw on examples from across the Pacific islands to  provide a nuanced and contextualised account of policing in this socially diverse  and rapidly transforming region.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49743790965009,"sku":"NGR9783031106347","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52671986991377,"sku":"NLS9783031106347","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031106342.jpg?v=1751317400"},{"product_id":"chief-police-officers-stories-of-legitimacy-book-ian-shannon-9783030858780","title":"Chief Police Officers Stories of Legitimacy","description":"This book adds to knowledge about chief police officers in England and Wales by exploring their understandings of the right of police to exercise power.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50397067968785,"sku":"CIN3030858782G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138740187409,"sku":"NLS9783030858780","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030858782.jpg?v=1751127024"},{"product_id":"on-the-wrong-side-of-the-law-book-graham-smith-9783030482213","title":"On the Wrong Side of The Law","description":"This book, the first of a two volume study, provides an historical account of complaints against Metropolitan police officers between formation of the force in 1829 and codification of remedies for misconduct under the Police Act 1964. A complainant centred standpoint is developed to counteract the marginalization of the interests of victims, which is held to demonstrate that the drive for effective and efficient law enforcement has overshadowed the public interest in holding officers to account for misconduct. After officer accountability before the criminal courts diminished in the nineteenth century, missed opportunities to reform complaints procedures following commissions of inquiry in 1906-08, 1928 and 1960-62 are discussed. The second volume of the study, Combating Impunity: Complaints Against Metropolitan Police, 1964-2021, will examine the part played by complainants and civil society organisations in combating police impunity in the citizen oversight era.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50643919700241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50643920290065,"sku":"GOR014021228","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52689673781521,"sku":"NLS9783030482213","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030482219.jpg?v=1750870305"},{"product_id":"police-citizen-relations-in-nigeria-book-oluwagbenga-michael-akinlabi-9783030929213","title":"Police-Citizen Relations in Nigeria","description":"This book offers an historical and contemporary analysis of policing and police-citizen relations in Nigeria, to understand why people co-operate (or don’t) with the police. It examines police legitimacy and the validity of procedural justice theory in a post-colonial African context where corruption, brutality and lack of accountability are not uncommon, to find more refined and alternative answers to the question of why people co-operate (or don’t) with the police. The history of policing in Nigeria is explored first and then procedural justice theory is tested through an extensive, cross-sectional survey of the public. One of the core findings is that citizens’ co-operation with the police is driven less by legitimacy but more by effectiveness considerations and “dull compulsion”, a concept akin to legal cynicism. This study represents one of the first attempts to test and understand “dull compulsion” and its relevance in this context. Overall, it develops the field by illustrating that that there are significant variations between contexts when addressing the influence of perceived procedural justice policing on perceptions of police legitimacy, and it explains the implications for policy makers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51060389970193,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51060392558865,"sku":"NIN9783030929213","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52689250582801,"sku":"NLS9783030929213","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030929213.jpg?v=1750901992"},{"product_id":"police-and-state-crime-in-the-americas-book-sebastin-sclofsky-9783031458118","title":"Police and State Crime in the Americas","description":"This book advances a much-needed “postcolonial” framework in analyzing the police. It seeks to deepen our understanding of the police role in maintaining Western global domination throughout the American region despite the violent end of colonial rule. Building on Chevigny's (1995) classic study, this book seeks to draw renewed attention to the role of police in perpetrating state violence and serving as the tip of the spear of state power. It seeks to understand the construction of marginality and the multiple and intersecting structures of colonial domination, before shining a light directly on the crimes of the state, in an attempt to hold criminal state organizations to account. It draws on interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies that center marginalized and colonized experiences and allows for the development of countercolonial knowledge. Centered around the notion of ‘algorithmic governance’, this volume explores various practices of abstract and intelligence-led policing within the context of surveillance and regulatory capitalism. Each chapter interrogates these concepts as much as realities on the ground as they play out across the globe – from Russia, USA, India, Brazil to Denmark, Germany and Norway. The volume offers a unique insight into the ways in which technologies and data-driven practices – from facial recognition, predictive algorithms, to generative AI – are reshaping cultures of policing both within and beyond police proper. Particular attention is paid to the simultaneous privatization and pluralization policing and intelligence and to the proliferation of new intelligence actors. After officer accountability before the criminal courts diminished in the nineteenth century, missed opportunities to reform complaints procedures following commissions of inquiry in 1906-08, 1928 and 1960-62 are discussed. The second volume of the study will examine the part played by complainants and civil society organisations in combating police impunity in the citizen oversight era.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52535205888273,"sku":"NLS9783030482244","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030482244.jpg?v=1760670549"},{"product_id":"plural-policing-security-and-the-covid-crisis-book-monica-den-boer-9783031191794","title":"Plural Policing, Security and the COVID Crisis","description":"This book critically examines how countries across Europe have dealt with the COVID crisis from a policing and security perspective. Across the chapters, contributors from different countries examine the data, press coverage, and provide professional observations on how policing, law enforcement, police powers and community relations were managed. They focus on how security and governmental actors often failed to align with the formal scripts that were specifically designed for crisis-management, resulting in the wavering application of professional discretion and coercive powers. Their different approaches were evident: in some regions police were less dominantly visible compared to other regions, where the police used a top-down visible and repressive stance vis-à-vis public alignment with COVID rules, including the imposition of lockdown and curfews. Some contributors draw on data from the COROPOL (Corona Policing) Monitor which collated data on crime, plural policing and public order in Europe and around the world during the early phases of the COVID crisis. Overall, this book seeks to provide comparative critical insights and commentary as well as a practical and operational understanding of security governance during the COVID-19 crisis and the lessons learned to improve future preparedness.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52617957048593,"sku":"NLS9783031191794","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031191794.jpg?v=1761531808"},{"product_id":"policing-the-favelas-of-rio-de-janeiro-book-tomas-salem-9783031490262","title":"Policing the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro","description":"This book offers a unique look into the world of policing and the frontline of Brazil’s war on drugs. It analyzes the tensions produced by attempts to modernize Rio de Janeiro’s public security policies. Since the return of democracy in 1985, Rio's police forces have waged war against armed drug gangs based in the city’s favelas, casting the people who live in these communities as internal enemies. In preparation for the Olympics in 2016, the police sought to ‘pacify’ the favelas and their populations through the establishment of Pacifying Police Units (UPPs) in many of the city’s favela communities. Drawing on eight months of ethnographic fieldwork with the police, this book follows officers across the institutional hierarchy in their daily activities, on patrol, and during training. Tracing the genealogies of contemporary forms of policing-as-warfare through the notion of ‘colonial war’ and ‘cultural war’, it highlights the material and ideational dimensions of war as a cosmological force that shapes Brazilian social relations, subjectivities, landscapes, economies, and politics. It draws on the Deleuzian notion of ‘war machine and state dynamics’ to show how practices of elimination co-exist with attempts to transform favela territories and their people and analyzes the link between the moral universe of policing and right-wing populism in Brazil. Through rich and nuanced ethnography, it offers a critical perspective on militarized policing and 21st century forms of authoritarianism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52620204605713,"sku":"NLS9783031490262","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031490262.jpg?v=1761537989"},{"product_id":"chief-police-officers-stories-of-legitimacy-book-ian-shannon-9783030858810","title":"Chief Police Officers Stories of Legitimacy","description":"This book adds to knowledge about chief police officers in England and Wales by exploring their understandings of the right of police to exercise power.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52662202401041,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52662203253009,"sku":"NLS9783030858810","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030858810.jpg?v=1762268964"},{"product_id":"policing-and-intelligence-in-the-global-big-data-era-volume-ii-book-christin-wathne-9783031682971","title":"Policing and Intelligence in the Global Big Data Era, Volume II","description":"This volume, the second of a two volume set, offers a rich and unique collection of global perspectives on data-driven predictive technologies and the expansion and use of surveillance apparatuses in policing and intelligence, both public and private. Volume II delves into the epistemologies of data, into the imaginaries of accuracy, and fantasies of technosolutionism, utilizing empirical case studies to interrogate the use of data in policing, while raising questions pertaining to governance, ethics and knowledge construction. The chapters span from exploring the construction of clean and dirty data in private and public policing in South Africa, discussions about facial recognition and technopolitics in Brazil, the construction of intelligence and organizational learning in Norwegian police ethics and broader questions of transparency, data quality, and trust in data-driven policing, to the very topical issues of policing of generative AI and the ways in which both authoritarian and liberal democracies, such as China and India, use biopolitics to turn social welfare into surveillance. Academics and students of criminology, social anthropology, critical algorithm studies, critical sociology, and regional studies, will find this timely volume of interest.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52664790155537,"sku":"NLS9783031682971","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52779209097489,"sku":"NIN9783031682971","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031682971.jpg?v=1762275553"},{"product_id":"plural-policing-security-and-the-covid-crisis-book-monica-den-boer-9783031191763","title":"Plural Policing, Security and the COVID Crisis","description":"This book critically examines how countries across Europe have dealt with the COVID crisis from a policing and security perspective. Contrary to much other work it focuses on wider Europe and the social and political context in which the police practice of stopping citizens emerges, develops and can be curtailed. More specifically, the volume analyses public controversies about police stops, i.e. events in which conflicts emerge about how the performance of police stops is explained and justified.  This book stems from an EU COST Action research network on Police Stops which engages academics and practitioners from 29 countries. It appeals to those in law, criminology and policing studies with some potential for wider interest in cultural studies\/history and public policy\/politics, as well as to practitioners in police scrutiny, oversight and other professional bodies and in training organisations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52676187095313,"sku":"NLS9783031351242","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031351242.jpg?v=1762303677"},{"product_id":"policing-teen-sexting-book-andy-phippen-9783031314544","title":"Policing Teen Sexting","description":"This book explores the policing response to teen sexting  the digital exchange, both consensual and non-consensual, of intimate images among youth peers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52688040755473,"sku":"NLS9783031314544","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52779193762065,"sku":"NIN9783031314544","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031314544.jpg?v=1762331967"},{"product_id":"black-britons-race-and-policing-book-bisi-akintoye-9783032116611","title":"Black Britons, Race, and Policing","description":"This book explores the historical and contemporary policing of Black communities in Britain, revealing how much has — and hasn’t — changed. Drawing on 58 interviews with young people, elders, and community workers in a heavily policed North London neighbourhood, it offers a powerful, intergenerational account of racialised policing and its everyday consequences. Through an intersectional lens, it examines how race, gender, class, and place overlap to shape Black Britons’ encounters with police and their sense of belonging. Through the voices of those most affected, the book traces how these experiences have produced enduring cultural narratives of mistrust, resistance, and exclusion. Exposing how policing continues to racialise and criminalise certain communities designated suspect status, it connects these practices to the legacies of empire and the politics of othering. It concludes by considering what these histories mean for the present and future of police-community relations and offers practical recommendations for building trust, accountability, and justice.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53406670323985,"sku":"NGR9783032116611","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032116611.jpg?v=1776205377"},{"product_id":"who-gets-believed-book-michelle-n-eliasson-9783032222527","title":"Who Gets Believed?","description":"This book investigates how police officers perceive the credibility of domestic and non-domestic battery victims by comparing and contrasting multiple points along case development. It draws on research with a police department in north central Florida involving 500 hours of ride-along with patrol officers and follows 34 cases of domestic and non-domestic battery. It examines how police officers describe and depict victims and their credibility during the initial encounters with incident participants, post-incident perceptions, and victim characterization in their subsequent police reports. The book triangulates statements made by officers with rich and immersive accounts and observations, case information from police reports, and police department policy documents. It provides an overview of the police organization, its procedures, and practices when dealing with both domestic and non-domestic batteries and describes the aspects that influence officers' perception of victim credibility.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53475977986321,"sku":"NGR9783032222527","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032222527.jpg?v=1780394733"},{"product_id":"police-stop-and-search-in-england-book-winifred-agnew-pauley-9783032270627","title":"Police Stop and Search in England","description":"This book offers a critical realist analysis of police stop and search practices in England, examining the underlying mechanisms that drive both intended and unintended outcomes. Stop and search remain controversial: seen by many as necessary for preventing crime, yet criticised for perpetuating harm through racial discrimination and strained police-community relationships.   Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, interviews with police officers and stakeholders, and quantitative analysis of stop and search data, the book identifies the contextual factors and generative mechanisms that shape how stop and search is used and what outcomes it produces. It reveals how historical tensions between police and marginalised communities, inconsistent political messaging, and an emphasis on low-level drug enforcement contribute to disproportionate targeting of ethnic minorities and socio-economically disadvantaged areas.   The research uncovers several significant mechanisms. Officer identity plays a central role: for 'proactive' officers, stop and search is embedded in their professional self-conception. Neighbourhood bias drives operational decisions, leading to over-policing of stigmatised areas. A disconnect exists between officers' protective justifications and the reality that most stops target young men for minor cannabis possession rather than serious offending.   By examining how contextual factors and generative mechanisms interact, the book provides a comprehensive framework for understanding stop and search in England and internationally. It demonstrates why procedural reforms consistently fail and that meaningful change requires addressing the deep-rooted structures that generate harmful outcomes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53605916541201,"sku":"NGR9783032270627","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032270627.jpg?v=1780007328"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/palgrave-s-critical-policing-studies-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
