Focusing on the Spanish translations of Mark Twain’s children’s classics The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the author traces the evolution of the censorship system of the Francoist regime and its impact on Spanish children’s literature during the years after the Spanish Civil War. Drawing on the regime’s censorship laws, official censors’ records, and textbooks, she not only examines the censorship imposed on the translations of Twain’s works, but also offers insights into the intricate connections between state censorship and the regime’s educational aims. The book gives a revealing analysis of the ways in which the highly bureaucratic censorship apparatus operated under Franco’s dictatorship, outlining the flaws and fallacies within it, as well as the strategies adopted by publishers and translators to resist the power of the state. While centred on Francoist Spain, the book also explores broader themes of ideology, censorship, and translation, making it a valuable source for scholars of translation studies and Hispanic studies, as well as those with a wider interest in literature, history, and cultural studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061329428753,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061332377873,"sku":"NIN9783031666643","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52657253187857,"sku":"NLS9783031666643","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/303166664X.jpg?v=1751317580"},{"product_id":"swahili-in-spaces-of-war-book-alamin-mazrui-9783031273407","title":"Swahili in Spaces of War","description":"This monograph examines the roles and functions of Swahili in war\/conflict situations, and the impact of wars on the destiny of the language. Covering a period of over a century, the monograph explores this sociolinguistic theme in the context of six wars\/conflicts: the Maji Maji resistance against German rule, the two World Wars, the anti-colonial resistance to British colonialism, the wars of the Great Lakes region, the cold wars, and the ongoing war against terrorism. In geographical focus, some of the war situations explored here are “local,” others are “transnational,” and others still rather “global” in scope and ramifications. In the final analysis, the monograph provides important snapshots of the conflict-based history of the Swahili language, demonstrating once again that language is a malleable tool that can be appropriated and galvanized to serve the interests of either party in a conflict and sometimes as a means of creating hegemonic and anti-hegemonic meanings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51607946985745,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51607947280657,"sku":"NGR9783031273407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031273400.jpg?v=1751095191"},{"product_id":"languages-and-the-military-book-h-footitt-9781349349487","title":"Languages and the Military","description":"Through detailed case studies ranging from the 18th century until today,this book explores the role of foreign languages in military alliances, in occupation and in peace building. It explores the significant role of translation in transmitting a recent past that continues to resonate within current debates on how to memorialize this inconclusive historical episode. The volume combines a detailed analysis of well-known authors such as Langston Hughes and John Dos Passos, with an investigation into the challenges found in translating novels such as The Group by Mary McCarthy (considered a threat to the policies established by the dictatorial regime), and includes more recent works such as El tiempo entre costuras by María Dueñas. Further, it examines the reception of the translations and whether the narratives cross over effectively in various contexts. Chapters within explore how Chinese interpreters were trained and deployed as an important military and political asset by competing domestic and international powers, including the Chinese Nationalist Government (Kuomingtang), the Chinese Communist Party and Japanese forces. Drawing from a wide range of sources, including archives in mainland China and Taiwan, memoirs and interviews with former military interpreters, it discusses how the interpreting profession was affected by shifts of foreign policy and how interpreters’ professional habitus was formed through their training and interaction with other social agents and institutions. By investigating individual interpreters’ career development and border-crossing strategies, it questions the assumption of interpreting as an exclusive profession and highlights interpreters’ active position-taking as a strategy of self-protection, a route to power, or just a chance of a better life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52453890294033,"sku":"NLS9781137461186","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137461186.jpg?v=1759369452"},{"product_id":"translating-evidence-and-interpreting-testimony-at-a-war-crimes-tribunal-book-ellen-elias-bursac-9781349461820","title":"Translating Evidence and Interpreting Testimony at a War Crimes Tribunal","description":"How can defendants be tried if they cannot understand the charges being raised against them? War writing has rarely been read from the point of view of translation even though war is by definition a multilingual event, and knowledge of the Second World War and the Holocaust is mediated through translated texts. Here, the author opens up this field of research through analysis of several important works of French war fiction and their English translations. The book examines the wartime publishing structures which facilitated literary exchanges across national borders, the strategies adopted by translators of war fiction, the relationships between translated war fiction and dominant national memories of the war, and questions of multilingualism in war writing. In doing so, it sheds new light on the political and ethical questions that arise when the trauma of war is represented in fiction and through translation. This engaging work will appeal to students and scholars of translation, cultural memory, war fiction and Holocaust writing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52480615776529,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52480617120017,"sku":"NLS9783319920863","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319920863.jpg?v=1759850496"},{"product_id":"interpreting-conflict-book-marija-todorova-9783030669089","title":"Interpreting Conflict","description":"This edited book examines the role of interpreting in conflict situations, bringing together studies from different international and intercultural contexts, with contributions from military personnel, humanitarian interpreters and activists as well as academics. War writing has rarely been read from the point of view of translation even though war is by definition a multilingual event, and knowledge of the Second World War and the Holocaust is mediated through translated texts. Here, the author opens up this field of research through analysis of several important works of French war fiction and their English translations. Covering a period of over a century, the monograph explores this sociolinguistic theme in the context of six wars\/conflicts: the Maji Maji resistance against German rule, the two World Wars, the anti-colonial resistance to British colonialism, the wars of the Great Lakes region, the cold wars, and the ongoing war against terrorism. In geographical focus, some of the war situations explored here are “local,” others are “transnational,” and others still rather “global” in scope and ramifications. In the final analysis, the monograph provides important snapshots of the conflict-based history of the Swahili language, demonstrating once again that language is a malleable tool that can be appropriated and galvanized to serve the interests of either party in a conflict and sometimes as a means of creating hegemonic and anti-hegemonic meanings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52686096761105,"sku":"NLS9783031273377","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031273377.jpg?v=1762327197"},{"product_id":"meeting-the-language-challenges-of-nato-operations-book-i-jones-9781349457328","title":"Meeting the Language Challenges of NATO Operations","description":"After 40 years of Cold War, NATO found itself intervening in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Afghanistan, where the ability to communicate with local people was essential to the success of the missions. Current violent developments in these multiethnic countries with their shared legacies of Russian domination highlight the intertwining of language with conflict and war, reflecting confrontation and challenges to peace. It is shown how core values attached to language in identity formation and feelings of belonging or marginalization, along with attitudes to language use by the in-group in contrast to others, are easily subject to politicization. Forced migration, language erasure and shift, central in today’s post-Soviet conflicts, are also experienced by minorities in the Russian North Caucasus—such as the Circassians—based on their history of Russian colonization. The book will be of interest to readers in a wide range of fields, including sociolinguistics, language policy, and language contact, as well as identity politics, migration linguistics, state and nation building, area studies, post-Soviet and European studies, political science, international relations, and peace and conflict studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53113604571409,"sku":"NLS9783032084187","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032084187.jpg?v=1770682023"},{"product_id":"interpreting-brothers-in-arms-book-pekka-kujam-9783032190598","title":"Interpreting Brothers-in-Arms","description":"This Open Access book presents the first in-depth analysis of the Finnish-German military alliance (1941–1944) as a translation zone – a multilingual network of military, administrative and civilian encounters held together by linguistically versed soldiers and civilians acting as interpreters and translators. It focuses on interpreters and liaison officers of the Finnish Liaison Staff in Rovaniemi, who were assigned to the staffs of the German army units with the task of maintaining communication between the two armies and assisting German troops in their daily matters. Furthermore, attention is paid to Finnish civilians, especially women whose language skills made them candidates for a range of mediation tasks in the German units. The reconstruction of military interpreters’ and liaison officers’ tasks and mediation agency between the brothers-in-arms and their military cultures is based on their war-time weekly reports, whereas the civilian interpreters’ experiences are drawn from a variety of autobiographical accounts, including interviews.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53475980345617,"sku":"NGR9783032190598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032190598.jpg?v=1777415117"},{"product_id":"dynamics-among-mother-language-motherland-and-liberation-struggle-book-rehnuma-sazzad-9783032285423","title":"Dynamics among Mother Language, Motherland, and Liberation Struggle","description":"This book offers a comparative study of how language movements shaped divergent paths of nation-building in postcolonial South Asia. Focusing on East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and Tamil-speaking regions of Sri Lanka, it examines why two linguistic struggles—both rooted in cultural rights—produced radically different outcomes: a successful Liberation War in 1971 and a protracted Civil War from the 1980s onward. Drawing on Benedict Anderson, Edward Said, and Gayatri Spivak, it explores official nationalisms (Urdu, Sinhala) versus vernacular counter-nationalisms (Bengali, Tamil); reveals how writers of novels, poems, and plays shaped national consciousness; and highlights contrasting impacts of language movements on women’s emancipation. The book traces the trajectory from cultural grievance to armed struggle, arguing that language rights are not symbolic but structural to political life in decolonized states. By comparing the secular Bengali movement with the sectarian Tamil struggle, it illuminates the possibilities—and limits—of emancipation in modern times.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53605927125265,"sku":"NGR9783032285423","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032285423.jpg?v=1780007369"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/palgrave-studies-in-languages-at-war-book-series.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
