The focus of this book is on spaces and contexts where change is seeded, regardless of whether it was planned and whether it was or will be successful in the end. Contributors analyze the seeds of change at their very inception in diverse cultural contexts across four continents. How do small groups of ordinary and often also disenfranchised people design, suggest and implement ideas of change? How do they use and remake small urban spaces to better suit their purposes, voice claims to the city, create opportunities, and design better urban lives and futures? The emphasis of this volume is not on the nature of activities and change, but on the minute processes of initiating change.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51060763459857,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51060766179601,"sku":"NIN9783030843786","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52410245906705,"sku":"NLS9783030843786","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030843785.jpg?v=1751317352"},{"product_id":"forms-of-inequality-and-the-legitimacy-of-governance-volume-two-book-italo-pardo-9783031786938","title":"Forms of Inequality and the Legitimacy of Governance, Volume Two","description":"This edited volume uses ethnographic cases to examine social, political, and economic inequality in diverse urban settings. In this book, this sine qua non runs across the in-depth examination of the ways in which healthcare and public health are managed by the authorities and experienced by the people on the ground in urban Europe, the USA, India, Africa, Latin America and the Far and Middle East. This book brings comparatively together anthropological studies on healthcare and public health rigorously based on in-depth empirical knowledge. Inspired by the current debate on legitimacy, legitimation and de-legitimation, the contributions do not refrain from taking into account the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the health systems under study, but carefully avoid letting this issue monopolise the discussion. This book raises key challenges to our understanding of healthcare practices and the governance of public health. With a keen eye on urban life, its inequalities and the ever-expanding gap between rulers and the ruled, the findings address important questions on the complex ways in which authorities gain, keep, or lose the public’s trust.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51387903148305,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51387904000273,"sku":"NGR9783031255946","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031255941.jpg?v=1751030762"},{"product_id":"forms-of-inequality-and-the-legitimacy-of-governance-volume-one-book-italo-pardo-9783031786068","title":"Forms of Inequality and the Legitimacy of Governance, Volume One","description":"This edited volume uses ethnographic cases to examine social, political, and economic inequality in diverse urban settings. The Greek-speaking Christian Orthodox community (Rum Polites) is among the oldest in the urban society, yet their leading status during the centuries of imperial cosmopolitanism has faded. They have even been brought to the brink of disappearance in their home city. Scattered around the world as a result of the homogenizing tendencies of nationalism, the Rum Polites in the diaspora of Istanbul (“the City” or Poli) continue to identify with its cosmopolitan legacy, as vividly shown through their everyday practices of distinction and cultural memory. By exploring the shifting meaning of cosmopolitanism in spatial and temporal contexts, Diaspora of the City examines how experiences of forced displacement can highlight changing conceptualizations of what constitutes a local, diasporic, minority, or migrantcommunity in different multicultural urban settings, past and present.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52120310284561,"sku":"NLS9781137554857","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137554857.jpg?v=1757425197"},{"product_id":"syrian-armenians-and-the-turkish-factor-book-marcello-mollica-9783030723217","title":"Syrian Armenians and the Turkish Factor","description":"This volume examines significant social transformations engendered by the ongoing Syrian conflict in the lives of Syrian Armenians.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52124816605457,"sku":"NLS9783030723217","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030723217.jpg?v=1757459429"},{"product_id":"shichigosan-book-melinda-papp-9781137565372","title":"Shichigosan","description":"This book presents a case study of shichigosan, an extremely popular childhood family ritual in contemporary Japan. It is an interesting example of a custom with very ancient roots (going back to the tenth century), that has undergone several transformations during the course of its history, adapting to changing socio-economic and cultural circumstances. Within the study, the ritual unfolds as a shared platform where basic social values, views on children and family life, and individual perceptions emerge, are expressed and moulded at the same time. This book offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of a ritual practice in the intensely urbanized context of present-day Japan.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52133769412881,"sku":"NLS9781137565372","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137565372.jpg?v=1757533749"},{"product_id":"mixed-occupancy-housing-in-london-book-james-rosbrook-thompson-9783319746777","title":"Mixed-Occupancy Housing in London","description":"This ethnographic study of a mixed-occupancy housing estate near the centre of London refocuses the scholarly conversation around social housing in the UK after the 1980 Housing Act.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52136749400337,"sku":"NLS9783319746777","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319746777.jpg?v=1757554844"},{"product_id":"migration-of-rich-immigrants-book-alex-vailati-9781137510761","title":"Migration of Rich Immigrants","description":"Migration of Rich Immigrants addresses flows of emigrants who establish themselves in other countries temporarily or permanently, in favorable economic conditions. Raising many issues pertinent to the social sciences, such as contestations around state regulation of violence, commerce and broadcasting, pedagogy and elite sport and how sport is delivered and narrated to the masses, the book studies the history of boxing in Sheffield and the sport’s impact on the cultural, political and economic development of the city since the 18th century. Interweaving urban anthropology with sports studies and historical research the text expertly examines a variety of published sources, ranging from academic papers to biographies and from newspaper reports to case studies and contemporary interviews. In Volume I, Bell and Armstrong construct a vivid history of boxing and probe its cultural acceptance in the late 1800s, examining how its rise was inextricably intertwined with the industrial and social development of Sheffield. Although Sheffield was not a national player in prize-fighting’s early days, throughout the mid-1800s, many parochial scores and wagers were settled by the use of fists. By the end of the century, boxing with gloves had become the norm, and Sheffield had a valid claim to be the chief provincial focus of this new passion—largely due to the exploits of George Corfield, Sheffield’s first boxer of national repute. Corfield’s deeds were later surpassed by three British champions: Gus Platts, Johnny Cuthbert and Henry Hall. Concluding with the dual themes of the decline of boxing in Sheffield and the city's changing social profile from the 1950s onwards, the volume ends with a meditation on the arrival of new migrants to the city and the processes that aided or frustrated their integration into UK life and sport.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52405968371985,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52405969027345,"sku":"NLS9783030635473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030635473.jpg?v=1758768341"},{"product_id":"corrupt-britain-book-peter-jones-9783031369360","title":"Corrupt Britain","description":"This book deploys a long-term account of political corruption in Britain to explain the phenomenon of corruption as it resides within the state and the contemporary problem of corruption denial among members of the political class. In this second volume, Bell and Armstrong track the resurgence of boxing to the present day and consider how the game and its players have changed over time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472731828497,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472732713233,"sku":"NLS9783030635558","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030635558.jpg?v=1759839056"},{"product_id":"urban-utopias-book-tereza-kuldova-9783319837840","title":"Urban Utopias","description":"This book brings anthropologists and critical theorists together in order to investigate utopian visions of the future in the neoliberal cities of India and Sri Lanka.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52479053693201,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52479054741777,"sku":"NLS9783319837840","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319837840.jpg?v=1759848099"},{"product_id":"ethnography-of-the-goodman-building-book-niccolo-caldararo-9783030122843","title":"An Ethnography of the Goodman Building","description":"Through in-depth analysis and narrative investigation of an actual building occupation, Niccolo Caldararo seeks to not only offer an historical account of the Goodman Building in San Francisco, but also focus on the active resistance tactics of its residents from the 1960s to the 1980s. Even in the face of these significant changes, however, the ethnographic enquiry at the heart of this book testifies to the enduring strength of the “spirit of capitalism”: even as the bonds between employees, companies, and their regions are undergoing significant transformation, entrepreneurial myths endure—in part in fear of the end of a secure, organizing structure.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52618780541201,"sku":"NLS9783319966090","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319966090.jpg?v=1761534080"},{"product_id":"legitimacy-book-italo-pardo-9783319962375","title":"Legitimacy","description":"Global in scope, this original and thought-provoking collection applies new theory on legitimacy and legitimation to urban life. As well as examining the long-term consequences of ‘Right to Buy,’ such as shortages in local authority stock and neighbourhood gentrification, James Rosbrook-Thompson and Gary Armstrong investigate the changes wrought on the social fabric of the individual estate. Drawing on four years of ethnographic fieldwork, the authors explore the estate’s social mix and, more specifically, the consequences of owner-occupiers, council tenants and private renters sharing a cramped inner-city neighbourhood. Mixed-Occupancy Housing in London: A Living Tapestry humanizes the academic discussion of class, race, and gender in social housing through the occupants’ tales of getting by, getting along and getting out.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52660823326993,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52660824277265,"sku":"NLS9783030090531","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030090531.jpg?v=1762266083"},{"product_id":"emergent-spaces-book-petra-kuppinger-9783030843816","title":"Emergent Spaces","description":"This book explores different emergent spaces where diverse urbanites spontaneously negotiate, make and remake urban spaces, create opportunities, produce social change, challenge urban life, culture, and politics, or simply ask for their right to the city. Istasse interrogates how heritage appears (or not) when inhabitants undertake construction and restoration projects in their homes, furnish and decorate their spaces, talk about their affective and sensual relations with houses, face conflicts in and about their houses, and more. Shedding light on the continuum between houses-as-dwellings and houses-as-heritage, the author establishes heritage as a trajectory: heritage as a quality results from a ‘surplus of attention’ and relates to nostalgia or to a feeling of threat, loss, and disappearance; to values related to purity, materiality, and time; and to actions of preservation and transmission. Living in a World Heritage site provides a grammar of heritage that will allow scholars to question key notions of temporality and nostalgia, the idea of culture, theimportance of experts, and moral principles in relation to heritage sites around the globe.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52684418351377,"sku":"NLS9783030174538","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030174538.jpg?v=1762322982"},{"product_id":"gentrification-around-the-world-volume-ii-book-jerome-krase-9783030413408","title":"Gentrification around the World, Volume II","description":"Bringing together scholarly but readable essays on the process of gentrification, this two-volume collection addresses the broad question: In what ways does gentrification affect cities, neighborhoods, and the everyday experiences of ordinary people?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52689590321425,"sku":"NLS9783030413408","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030413408.jpg?v=1762335743"},{"product_id":"conflict-space-and-transnationalism-book-arsen-hakobyan-9783031892066","title":"Conflict, Space and Transnationalism","description":"This book looks at the way the 2020 Second Nagorno Karabakh War allowed urban spectacular transformation in war actors’ attitudes towards space and transnationalism.
