It also brought about unique communities marked by a high degree of social solidarity and self-help. Mining was central to working class life, drawing rural populations into industrial labour, but it often took place in picturesque landscapes, so that its black spoil heaps became a central symbol of the degradation of pastoral life by the demands of an extractive industry. Throughout Europe and the USA photographers have pictured the characteristic landscapes of the industry, and continue to do so as strip mining devastates huge areas of land. Not only landscape photography but also documentary, portraiture, photojournalism and art photography have been used in order to portray mines and miners. This book presents three interlinked strands of investigation. The first is the way in which the production of coal created paradigmatic communities grounded in particular landscapes. The second concerns the role of photography in exploring, delineating and critiquing mining communities. This in turn involves an examination of the aesthetic and social characteristics of a number of genres of photography. Lastly, it considers the growth and decline of these sites, the geographic shift of the industry to other places, and the re-presentation of traditional localities through the lens of the heritage industry and industrial tourism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50037508964625,"sku":"NGR9780367716462","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51149670777105,"sku":"NIN9780367716462","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52430830862609,"sku":"NLS9780367716462","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367716461.jpg?v=1750974628"},{"product_id":"photography-and-environmental-activism-book-conohar-scott-9781350099517","title":"Photography and Environmental Activism","description":"This publication maps out key moments in the history of environmentalist photography, while also examining contemporary examples of artistic practice. It discards single modes of seeing environmental transformations in favour of a multiple and de-centred environmental imagination. Bergit Arends uses multidisciplinary perspectives to view localized environmental, social and political issues through research-based artistic practices. The book not only makes available original research into newly and recently discovered archives of ecological and historical change but also shows how this research is manifest in exhibition formats. This book presents international, transhistorical projects by contemporary visual artists who use archives together with photography as documentary and performative media for the comparative study of environments and places. A wide array of artists from diverse backgrounds working primarily in Europe and North America from the 1970s to the present day are discussed and set in relation to Anthropocene narratives. Case studies include environmental archive-based work by Nguyen the Thuc, Christiane Eisler, Chrystel Lebas, Mark Dion, Joy Gregory and Philip Miller. The book will be of interest to scholars working in photography, archive studies, art history, visual culture, environmental humanities and ecocriticism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50698980032785,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698982031633,"sku":"NGR9781032496429","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032496428.jpg?v=1750854540"},{"product_id":"landscapes-between-then-and-now-book-nicola-brandt-9781032238821","title":"Landscapes between Then and Now","description":"In Landscapes Between Then and Now, Nicola Brandt examines the increasingly compelling and diverse cross-disciplinary work of photographers and artists made during the transition from apartheid to post-apartheid and into the contemporary era. By examining specific artworks made in South Africa, Namibia and Angola, Brandt sheds light on established and emerging themes related to aftermath landscapes, embodied histories, (un)belonging, spirituality and memorialization. She shows how landscape and identity are mutually constituted, and profiles this process against the background of the legacy of the acutely racially divisive policies of the apartheid regime that are still reflected on the land. As a signpost throughout the book, Brandt draws on the work of the renowned South African photographer Santu Mofokeng and his critical thinking about landscape. Landscapes Between Then and Now explores how practitioners who engage with identity and their physical environment as a social product might reveal something about the complex and fractured nature of postcolonial and contemporary societies. Through diverse strategies and aesthetics, they comment on inherent structures and epistemologies of power whilst also expressing new and radical forms of self-determinism. Brandt asks why these cross-disciplinary works ranging from social documentary to experimental performance and embodied practices are critical now, and what important possibilities for social and political reflection and engagement they suggest.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51181995426065,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51181997588753,"sku":"NIN9781032238821","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402662441233,"sku":"NLS9781032238821","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032238828.jpg?v=1751205353"},{"product_id":"photography-and-environmental-activism-book-conohar-scott-9781032265377","title":"Photography and Environmental Activism","description":"This publication maps out key moments in the history of environmentalist photography, while also examining contemporary examples of artistic practice.
