For the first time, radical theology is addressed and assessed in a single, comprehensive volume, including introductory and historical essays for the beginner, essays on major figures and their thought, and shorter articles on various themes, concepts, and related topics. This book is a seminal work for the radical theology movement. It clarifies origins and demonstrates the exigency and utility of current figures and issues. A useful and essential guide for newcomers and veterans in the field, this volume serves as both a reference work and an introduction to omitted or forgotten topics within contemporary discussions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51060808024337,"sku":"NIN9783319965949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52594664177937,"sku":"NLS9783319965949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319965948.jpg?v=1751382694"},{"product_id":"modes-of-protest-and-resistance-book-margaret-betz-9783031471438","title":"Modes of Protest And Resistance","description":"It explores the normative space of resistance that is beyond self-defense and civil disobedience, and proposes the concept of resistance violence as a separate and special normative category.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061789622545,"sku":"NIN9783031471438","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51191613587729,"sku":"NGR9783031471438","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52408054022417,"sku":"NLS9783031471438","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031471431.jpg?v=1750806224"},{"product_id":"fetish-of-theology-book-colby-dickinson-9783030407742","title":"The Fetish of Theology","description":"By delving into the history of the fetish-object among both modern and contemporary commentators, this book highlights the fetish-object’s role as a philosophical and religious concept of the highest significance. Historically, fetishes are implicated in specific struggles for sovereign (political) and\/or religious (hierarchical) power, with their interwoven symbols defined as the primary location for transcendence in our world. This book defines the political consequences of fetish-objects within a western cultural, and primarily theological context through a comparative approach of various literatures on fetish-objects—anthropological to the psychological, Marxist to the theological. It reconceives of fetishes as a form of resistance to oppressive structures, something which motivated Christians themselves historically, and shaped our western understanding of the sacraments far more than has been acknowledged. Taking up this conversation likewise holds forth the possibility of reconceptualizing how fetish-objects and sacramental presences both speak profoundly to our late-modern selves.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064595742993,"sku":"NIN9783030407742","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52475799798033,"sku":"NLS9783030407742","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030407748.jpg?v=1751220760"},{"product_id":"immanence-of-theology-and-the-absurdity-of-faith-book-elijah-prewitt-davis-9783031666513","title":"The Immanence of Theology and the Absurdity of Faith","description":"The constant inundation of the affect and information experienced by contemporary individuals exposes the tragic nature of the world, making nihilism an epistemologically reasonable response. To counter the threat of nihilism, Elijiah Prewitt-Davis argues that knowledge must be replaced by belief. Against the common protestant concept of belief as strictly personal and interior, he proposes believing in the world as an absurd and immanent faith in the impossible—a belief that allows one to see and feel the potentialities simmering within the world as it is. Following Gilles Deleuze call to “transform belief,” Prewitt-Davis explores how belief heightens an affective attachment to our embeddedness on the world, revealing the potentialities with which time is always pregnant. Believing in the world as it is paradoxically becomes the mode of transforming the world inasmuch as the potential for something impossibly new is always immanently present.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51388115943697,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51388116304145,"sku":"NIN9783031666513","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51717913215249,"sku":"NGR9783031666513","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031666518.jpg?v=1751030922"},{"product_id":"modes-of-protest-and-resistance-book-margaret-betz-9783031471469","title":"Modes of Protest And Resistance","description":"This book presents a  philosophical analysis of the different forms of political resistance and protest. It explores the normative space of resistance that is beyond self-defense and civil disobedience, and proposes the concept of “resistance violence” as a separate and special normative category. Instances that fall under this category can be, accordingly justified, even if they prove to be practically ineffective, by appealing to their role in preserving or upholding the dignity of the resistors or those who they aim to protect. Many have come to view him as an out-of-date thinker a safe exemplar of a mid-twentieth-century theological liberalism. The way he has come to be viewed contrasts sharply with the current theological landscape one dominated by the notion of radicality.  In this collection, Russell Re Manning breaks with the widespread opinion of Tillich as 'safe' and dated. Retrieving the Radical Tillich depicts the thinker as a radical theologian, strongly marked but never fully determined by the urgent critical demands of his time. From the crisis of a German cultural and religious life after the First World War, to the new realities of religious pluralism, Tillich's theological responses were always profoundly ambivalent, impure and disruptive, asserts Re Manning. The Tillich that is outlined and analyzed by this collection is never merely correlative. Far from the dominant image of the theologian as a liberal accommodationist, Re Manning reintroduces the troubled and troubling figure of the radical Tillich.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52137552707857,"sku":"NLS9781137380838","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137380838.jpg?v=1757558156"},{"product_id":"postsecular-history-book-maxwell-kennel-9783030857578","title":"Postsecular History","description":"In response to persistent theological influences within ostensibly secular ways of understanding time and history, Postsecular History revisits and revises the concept of periodization by tracing powerful efforts to divide time into past, present, and future, and by critiquing historical partitions between the Reformation and Enlightenment.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52140318523665,"sku":"NLS9783030857578","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030857578.jpg?v=1757573858"},{"product_id":"theopoetics-of-the-word-book-g-vahanian-9781137440624","title":"Theopoetics of the Word","description":"Gabriel Vahanian's final work, Theopoetics of the Word weaves together Christian theology, continental philosophy and cultural studies to present a new theology of language and technology for the 21st century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52141856588049,"sku":"NLS9781137440624","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137440624.jpg?v=1757578384"},{"product_id":"theopoetics-of-the-word-book-g-vahanian-9781137440617","title":"Theopoetics of the Word","description":"Gabriel Vahanian's final work, Theopoetics of the Word weaves together Christian theology, continental philosophy and cultural studies to present a new theology of language and technology for the 21st century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52141858750737,"sku":"NLS9781137440617","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52746946838801,"sku":"NIN9781137440617","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137440617.jpg?v=1757578398"},{"product_id":"on-philosophy-as-a-spiritual-exercise-book-p-goodchild-9781137355768","title":"On Philosophy as a Spiritual Exercise","description":"What if self-questioning could provoke an extreme attentiveness to a rich inner life? While Western capitalism is based upon the assumption of indefinite growth, we have run up against real, physical constraints to growth, and humanity must face the real, physical ramifications of the short-sighted and ultimately counter-productive choices made on behalf of the capitalist machine. While there is widespread angst and numerous scenarios of apocalyptic crisis and collapse, there is little or no comprehension of the problem and a coherent picture of reality is left wanting. Drawing primarily from the discourses of contemporary continental philosophy, cultural theory, and radical theology, the new materialism is being offered up as a redress to this problem by its effort to make sense of the world as an integrated whole.The book emphasizes three aspects of the current crisis: the ecological crisis, which is often viewed primarily in terms of global warming; the energy crisis, which involves peak oil and the limits of the ability to extract and exploit the cheap energy of fossil fuels; and finally the financial crisis, which involves the de-leveraging and destruction of massive amounts of money and credit. Each of these problems is inter-related, because money is dependent upon energy, and energy is a product of natural physical resources that are finite and diminishing. Rather than despair or the cynicism that passes for realpolitik, the authors will suggest that this crisis provides an opening for a new kind of orientation to thinking and acting, a new way of being in and of the earth. This opening is an opening onto a new materialism that is neither a crude consumerist materialism nor a reductive atomic materialism, but a materialism that takes seriously the material and physical world in which we live. This materialism counters idealism in its practical and philosophical forms, which constructs an ideal world that we wish to inhabit and then mistakes that world for the real one. While Western capitalism is based upon the assumption of indefinite growth, we have run up against real, physical constraints to growth, and humanity must face the real, physical ramifications of the short-sighted and ultimately counter-productive choices made on behalf of the capitalist machine. While there is widespread angst and numerous scenarios of apocalyptic crisis and collapse, there is little or no comprehension of the problem and a coherent picture of reality is left wanting. Drawing primarily from the discourses of contemporary continental philosophy, cultural theory, and radical theology, the new materialism is being offered up as a redress to this problem by its effort to make sense of the world as an integrated whole.The book emphasizes three aspects of the current crisis: the ecological crisis, which is often viewed primarily in terms of global warming; the energy crisis, which involves peak oil and the limits of the ability to extract and exploit the cheap energy of fossil fuels; and finally the financial crisis, which involves the de-leveraging and destruction of massive amounts of money and credit. Each of these problems is inter-related, because money is dependent upon energy, and energy is a product of natural physical resources that are finite and diminishing. Rather than despair or the cynicism that passes for realpolitik, the authors will suggest that this crisis provides an opening for a new kind of orientation to thinking and acting, a new way of being in and of the earth. This opening is an opening onto a new materialism that is neither a crude consumerist materialism nor a reductive atomic materialism, but a materialism that takes seriously the material and physical world in which we live. This materialism counters idealism in its practical and philosophical forms, which constructs an ideal world that we wish to inhabit and then mistakes that world for the real one. Furthermore, in contrast to classical materialism which rejects religion as a form of false consciousness, this new materialism recognizes religion as an effective means of political mobilization and as a genuine source of piety, and thus does not oppose religion per se; instead, it opposes fanaticism and fundamentalism, including the fairy-tale expectations that a God or gods will rescue us from our predicament and punish the evil-doers while rewarding the righteous.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52341491302673,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52341491892497,"sku":"NLS9781137374219","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137374219.jpg?v=1758171758"},{"product_id":"future-s-of-the-revolution-and-the-reformation-book-elena-namli-9783030273033","title":"Future(s) of the Revolution and the Reformation","description":"This volume brings together philosophers, social theorists, and theologians in order to investigate the relation between future(s) of the Revolution and future(s) of the Reformation. Historically, fetishes are implicated in specific struggles for sovereign (political) and\/or religious (hierarchical) power, with their interwoven symbols defined as the primary location for transcendence in our world. This book defines the political consequences of fetish-objects within a western cultural, and primarily theological context through a comparative approach of various literatures on fetish-objects—anthropological to the psychological, Marxist to the theological. It reconceives of fetishes as a form of resistance to oppressive structures, something which motivated Christians themselves historically, and shaped our western understanding of the sacraments far more than has been acknowledged. Taking up this conversation likewise holds forth the possibility of reconceptualizing how fetish-objects and sacramental presences both speak profoundly to our late-modern selves.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52402938446097,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402939134225,"sku":"NLS9783030407773","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030407773.jpg?v=1758759445"},{"product_id":"theology-and-new-materialism-book-john-reader-9783319545103","title":"Theology and New Materialism","description":"This book argues that identified weaknesses in recent theological engagement with New Materialism can be successfully addressed by incorporating insights from Relational Christian Realism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52410384908561,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52410385367313,"sku":"NLS9783319545103","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319545103.jpg?v=1758777767"},{"product_id":"economics-in-spirit-and-truth-book-n-wariboko-9781137475497","title":"Economics in Spirit and Truth","description":"Wariboko offers a critical-philosophical perspective on the logics and dynamics of finance capital in the twenty-first century in order to craft a model of the care of the soul that will enable citizens to not only better negotiate their economic existences and moral evaluations within it, but also resist its negative impact on social life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52430134378769,"sku":"NLS9781137475497","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137475497.jpg?v=1759168864"},{"product_id":"theology-after-the-birth-of-god-book-f-shults-9781349473366","title":"Theology after the Birth of God","description":"Engaging recent developments within the bio-cultural study of religion, Shults unveils the evolved cognitive and coalitional mechanisms by which god-conceptions are engendered in minds and nurtured in societies. Central themes are those of the relational and the apophatic as they represent different but essential strands of a materialist theology. The relational refers to the work of Deleuze and its influence upon key New Materialist thinkers such as De Landa, Bryant, and Braidotti but supplemented from Relational Christian Realism by Latour and Badiou and with reference to the concept of the apophatic as found in Keller and Kearney. Examining the concepts of transcendence, human agency, and a New Enlightenment, the book moves into more practical areas of aesthetics and technology concluding with a response to the contemporary apocalyptic of climate change. Modernity reveals itself to be the state of perennial crisis, and we all live in an immanentized state of Limbo.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52660520648977,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52660521763089,"sku":"NLS9783030076771","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030076771.jpg?v=1762265429"},{"product_id":"sacralization-of-time-book-joo-almeida-9783030465452","title":"The Sacralization of Time","description":"In this book, João Nunes de Almeida rethinks the relationship between crisis and fascism in today’s liberal democratic societies. Arguing that fascism has adapted to a post-modern idea of endless crisis, Almeida challenges one of the strongest liberal myths in western politics, namely that fascism and liberal democracy have different roots. Fascism, in Almeida’s view, is at the center of the very production of social relations in western capitalist societies, and is the result of the very desire to be saved from crisis underlying liberal democracy. It draws on stormy examples from Portugal’s contemporary history, with a particular focus on its fascist past and revolution, to explore affinities between crisis and fascism in other spatial and historical contexts. João Nunes de Almeida concludes that refusing to be saved from crisis becomes the refusal of any form of fascism in a more global context.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52666499268881,"sku":"NLS9783030465452","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030465452.jpg?v=1762280101"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/radical-theologies-and-philosophies-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
