Although it has proven to be one of the most challenging and controversial topics in sociology, the concept has taken firm root in lay and scholarly lexicons where it is widely understand and used to denote a type of crime that differs fundamentally from street crime. One way it is different is the backgrounds and characteristics of it perpetrators; the poor and disreputable fodder routinely encountered in police stations and in studies of street crime are seldom in evidence here. Most if not all white-collar offenders by contrast are distinguished by lives of privilege, much of it with origins in class inequality.  This reader begins together under a unifying theoretical approach the current state of knowledge about and debate over white-collar crime. Editors' introductions preface each of the six chapters in the book, and each of the thirty-one carefully chosen selections -- both classic and contemporary - has been significantly edited for readability and suitability for the college student. The readings address conceptual conflicts as well as empirical studies of the strucutre of opportunities, the characteristics of white-collar offenders and their decision making, and the various approaches to controlling white-collar offering. Additionally, the book includes twenty-one specially designed panels that call-out particular issues from the readings by offering case examples taken from local and regional newspapers. Together, the readings and the panels offer the student both analysis and examples of white-collar crime.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49578826498321,"sku":"GOR007755589","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49625018040593,"sku":"GOR007682460","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50239977718033,"sku":"CIN0195136217G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53296175317265,"sku":"CIN0195136217A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53359690547473,"sku":"CIN0195136217VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195136217.jpg?v=1751437893"},{"product_id":"what-works-in-policing-book-bayley-9780195108217","title":"What Works in Policing","description":"Presents selections of the best evaluation studies of contemporary policy practices, with explanatory discussions of trends in police research and the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49652234715409,"sku":"GOR012891951","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50168794054929,"sku":"CIN0195108213G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52652788416785,"sku":"CIN0195108213VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195108213.jpg?v=1751426756"},{"product_id":"incarcerating-criminals-book-flanagan-9780195105414","title":"Incarcerating Criminals","description":"Incarcerating Criminals places prisons and jails in the context of their social and organizational environments, examining these modern day correctional institutions and the issues and trends surrounding them. Selections provide historical and contemporary perspectives and data on the institutions themselves, their origins and development, and current controversies such as overcrowding, substance abuse treatment, and health care. Understanding why prisons are built when they are, where they are, and administered as they are requires students to appreciate the inextricable links between these institutions, the rest of the criminal justice system, and the social and political atmosphere that supports them. Incarcerating Criminals offers students a better understanding of the reasons for developing prisons and jails and the premises underlying contemporary correctional operations and crime control proposals. A special section focuses on specific inmate groups, from mentally ill offenders to those suffering from AIDS, to female inmates and gang members, to the correctional staff themselves. The concluding section examines the future of jails and prisons, including such current issues as privatization, risk management, and technological advances that affect corrections. Edited by three of the leading scholars in the field, Incarcerating Criminals is essential for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in criminal justice, criminology, sociology, and public policy, and for those individuals interested in learning more about correctional institutions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50345410625809,"sku":"CIN0195105419A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50794611310865,"sku":"GOR011492414","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51694416658705,"sku":"CIN0195105419G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195105419.jpg?v=1751069931"},{"product_id":"community-corrections-book-petersilia-9780195105438","title":"Community Corrections","description":"Community corrections has undergone a revolution over the past decade. Probation and parole populations have more than doubled as offenders continue to commit more serious crimes. Money for these programs has not increased, placing pressure on the programs to create tougher but cheaper sanctions and at the same time promising to rehabilitate offenders and keep communities safe. New programs have been set up, among them electronic monitoring, boot camps, and house arrest - some successful, others not. Although probation and parole do receive a great deal of public attention - particularly when a new crime is committed - there is relatively little scholarly literature or serious discussion of the subject. Community Corrections fills this gap, bringing together twenty-two readings covering the best available information on the current context, implementation, and impact of community-based sanctions. It offers policy-relevant information and identifies \"what works\" in community corrections, answering the most basic questions - what services are provided and at what cost; who receives probation and parole; and what programs are most effective. Designed for students, correctional professionals, and policymakers, Community Corrections brings readers up to date on the issues, data, and programs that comprise community corrections.  Several of the articles appear here for the first time, while others have either been previously printed or updated specifically for this volume. Providing an overview of the changing face of community corrections and the debates surrounding it, this text provides commentary on and assessments of various programs, showing the great unrealized promise in community corrections.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346105831697,"sku":"CIN0195105435G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195105435.jpg?v=1750940506"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/readings-in-crime-and-punishment-ser-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
