The Lower Danube, running between Singidunum (modern Belgrade) and Halmyris in the Danube Delta, was one of the most densely fortified regions of the Roman Empire. The region has long been a border zone, today forming part of the border between Serbia and Romania, and the majority of the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Despite its importance for understanding both Roman frontier policy and the relationship between ancient and modern borderscapes, the region has not yet made its full contribution to international Roman scholarship. Bridging the theoretical divide that exists between different regional research traditions, chapters in this volume focus on sites like Ratiaria, in modern north-western Bulgaria, while other contributors examine the complex landscape from a wider perspective oriented around roads, temporary camps, or early Christian sites. The Roman Lower Danube Frontier emphasises the importance of engaging with Roman frontier landscapes, particularly in regions such as East-Central Europe, where they remain part of a contemporary borderscape.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49746927550737,"sku":"NGR9781803276625","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1803276622.jpg?v=1750865983"},{"product_id":"exploring-the-antonine-wall-with-terrestrial-remote-sensing-book-william-s-hanson-9781803278018","title":"Exploring the Antonine Wall with Terrestrial Remote Sensing","description":"Exploring the Antonine Wall with terrestrial remote sensing has three main aims. The first is to make more widely available the data from the numerous geophysical surveys that have been undertaken at sites on the Antonine Wall over the last 20 years. Most of these surveys are currently inaccessible to a wider audience in unpublished technical reports. Since much of the original work was undertaken by specialists in the acquisition of geophysical data, rather than in Roman military archaeology, the second aim is to re-analyse this data and provide more focused interpretations of the results for each site. These are based on the authors' collectively wide background knowledge of both the monument and the application of geophysical survey in archaeology. The third aim is to offer some wider archaeological and geophysical conclusions, drawing attention to a number of areas where our understanding of the Antonine Wall has been enhanced by the geophysics and considering how the long history of such survey applied to a single monument serves to highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of the methodology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51626718789905,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51626719084817,"sku":"NGR9781803278018","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1803278013.jpg?v=1751345748"},{"product_id":"relativism-and-the-frontiers-of-empire-book-anna-walas-9781805830689","title":"Relativism and the Frontiers of Empire","description":"Relativism and the Frontiers of Empire captures a moment in the development of agendas in the study of Rome’s frontiers, whilst highlighting the legacy of a classic anthropological concept. The volume adopts the theme of cultural relativism as an umbrella term, which allows opening to a range of post-colonial, positional and relational approaches that rely on contextualising frontiers within their cultural frameworks and recognising the significance of the standpoint of the scholar in production of knowledge; the two key tenets of anthropological cultural relativism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53031329071377,"sku":"NGR9781805830689","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781805830689.jpg?v=1768607046"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/roman-frontier-studies-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
