From the very beginning, Greeks were enthusiastic letter writers, and letter writing became a distinct literary genre. Letters were included in the works of historians but they also formed the basis of works of fiction, and the formal substructure for many kinds of poem.   Patricia Rosenmeyer, an authority on the history of the Greek letter, assembles in this book a representative selection of such 'literary letters', from Aelian and Alciphron to Philostrartus and the supposed letters of Themistocles.   The book will be valuable for all students of Greek literature especially those studying Greek (and Latin) letter.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50065161584913,"sku":"CIN0415285518G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52353858437393,"sku":"NLS9780415285513","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415285518.jpg?v=1750814231"},{"product_id":"ctesias-history-of-persia-book-lloyd-llewellyn-jones-9780415629478","title":"Ctesias' 'History of Persia'","description":"Towards the end of the fifth century BC Ctesias of Cnidus wrote his 23 book History of Persia. Ctesias is a remarkable figure: he lived and worked in the Persian court and, as a doctor, tended to the world’s most powerful kings and queens. His position gave him special insight into the workings of Persian court life and access to the gossip and scandal surrounding Persian history and court politics, past and present. His History of Persia was completed at a time when the Greeks were fascinated by Persia and seems very much to cater to contemporary interest in Persian wealth and opulence, powerful Persian women, the institution of the harem, kings and queens, eunuchs and secret plots.   Presented here in English translation for the first time with commentaries, Ctesias offers a fascinating insight into Persia in the fifth century BC.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697095151889,"sku":"NGR9780415629478","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51002260619537,"sku":"NIN9780415629478","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139769790737,"sku":"NLS9780415629478","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415629470.jpg?v=1750845236"},{"product_id":"megasthenes-indica-book-richard-stoneman-9780367472948","title":"Megasthenes' Indica","description":"This book provides a new translation of all the surviving portions of the description of India written by Megasthenes in about 310 BCE, the fullest account of Indian geography, history and customs available to the classical world. Megasthenes’ book, which became a classic in antiquity, now survives only in fragments preserved in other Greek and Latin authors. Byzantine Readings of Ancient Historians includes translations of texts written by Byzantines on specific ancient historians. Each translated text is accompanied by an introduction and notes to highlight the specific context and purpose of its composition. For topics where his sources are lost or appear elsewhere in more truncated form, his testimony and the identification of the texts on which he depends are of critical importance.   For his account of the first two centuries of the Principate, Zonaras employed now-lost portions of Cassius Dio. From the point where Dio’s History ended, to the reign of Theodosius the Great (d. 395), he turned to other sources to produce a uniquely full historical narrative of the critical years 235-395, making Books XII.15-XIII.19 of the Epitome central to the study of both late Roman history and late Roman and Byzantine historiography.  This key section of the Epitome, together with Zonaras’ Prologue, here appears in English for the first time, both complemented by a historical and historiographical commentary. A special feature of the latter is a first-ever English translation of a broad range of sources which illuminate Zonaras’ account and the historiographical traditions it reflects. Among the authors whose newly translated works occupy a prominent place in the commentary are George Cedrenus, George the Monk, John of Antioch, Peter the Patrician, Symeon Magister, and Theodore Scutariotes. Specialized indices facilitate the use of the translations and commentary alike.  The result is an invaluable guide and stimulus to further research for scholars and students of the history and historiography of Rome and Byzantium.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51002268418321,"sku":"NIN9780415694322","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522136961297,"sku":"NLS9780415694322","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B09LBKSWKT.jpg?v=1751292212"},{"product_id":"pytheas-of-massalia-book-lionel-scott-9781032019987","title":"Pytheas of Massalia","description":"Pytheas of Massalia (Marseille), mariner, explorer, geographer and astronomer, made a pioneering voyage into the then unknown Atlantic around 325 BC, reaching Britain and the Baltic; this book collects and translates the references to him and his book (which is lost), and discusses and explains them.   The Greeks of Pytheas' time knew virtually nothing of northern Europe beyond the often-fantastical stories of traders, and Pytheas was the first person to provide factual, first-hand information on this region. His journey covered Iberia, France, Britain, from where he travelled so far north that he encountered ice floes; he then reached the Baltic. It was he who recorded Thule, and his astronomy enabled him to locate it on the Arctic Circle. Two thirds of our references to Pytheas come from Pliny and Strabo; their methods of work, as well as the perils of manuscript transmission, are explored in this volume. Scott also includes discussions and appendices on these areas to enable the scope of available references to be understood as a whole. There are some details of Pytheas' voyage that are lost, but the book offers balanced reasons for proposing how we may reasonably fill them in.  The breadth of Pytheas' achievements and the areas and topics his work covers mean that he has a wide range of appeal within classical studies and ancient history. This volume provides an invaluable resource to undergraduate and postgraduate students of early geography and astronomy, and Greece’s knowledge of and relationship to the rest of Europe in this period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51110849937681,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51110852198673,"sku":"NIN9781032019987","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52406012805393,"sku":"NLS9781032019987","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032019980.jpg?v=1751111124"},{"product_id":"sorrows-of-mattidia-book-curtis-hutt-9780367495756","title":"The Sorrows of Mattidia","description":"This volume offers a new translation of the Pseudo-Clementine family narrative here known as The Sorrows of Mattidia. The accompanying commentaries are designed not only to elucidate the meaning of the Greek text, but to call attention to Plutarch’s striking anticipations of arguments central to current philosophical and ethological discourse in defense of the position that non-human animals have intellectual and emotional dimensions that make them worthy of inclusion in the moral universe of human beings.   Plutarch’s Three Treatises on Animals will be of interest to students of ancient philosophy and natural science, and to all readers who wish to explore the history of thought on human–non-human animal relations, in which the animal treatises of Plutarch hold a pivotal position.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52432789831953,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52432790487313,"sku":"NLS9781138570849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138570849.jpg?v=1759175993"},{"product_id":"ancient-greek-literary-letters-book-patricia-a-rosenmeyer-9780415285506","title":"Ancient Greek Literary Letters","description":"The first referenece to letter writing occurs in the first text of western literature, Homer's Iliad. From the very beginning, Greeks were enthusiastic letter writers, and letter writing became a distinct literary genre. Letters were included in the works of historians but they also formed the basis of works of fiction, and the formal substructure for many kinds of poem.   Patricia Rosenmeyer, an authority on the history of the Greek letter, assembles in this book a representative selection of such 'literary letters', from Aelian and Alciphron to Philostrartus and the supposed letters of Themistocles.   The book will be valuable for all students of Greek literature especially those studying Greek (and Latin) letter.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52521560736017,"sku":"NLS9780415285506","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53034966548753,"sku":"NIN9780415285506","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415285506.jpg?v=1760571183"},{"product_id":"ctesias-history-of-persia-book-lloyd-llewellyn-jones-9780415364119","title":"Ctesias' 'History of Persia'","description":"Offers insights into the history of Persia in the fifth century BC. This process entailed selection, adaptation, and commentary, which shaped the corpus of Greek historiography in its transmission. By investigating those choices, Kaldellis enables a better understanding of the reception and survival of Greek historical writing.  Byzantine Readings of Ancient Historians includes translations of texts written by Byzantines on specific ancient historians. Each translated text is accompanied by an introduction and notes to highlight the specific context and purpose of its composition. In order to present a rounded picture of the reception of Greek historiography in Byzantium, a wide range of genres have been considered, such as poems and epigrams, essays, personalized scholia, and commentaries. Byzantine Readings of Ancient Historians is therefore an important resource for scholars and students of ancient history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522167599377,"sku":"NLS9780415732321","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53108444397841,"sku":"NIN9780415732321","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415732321.jpg?v=1760575425"},{"product_id":"lost-history-of-peter-the-patrician-book-thomas-banchich-9780367866969","title":"The Lost History of Peter the Patrician","description":"The Lost History of Peter the Patrician provides an annotated translation from the Greek of the fragments of the lost History of Peter the Patrician (ca. 500-565) and of additional fragments sometimes attributed to Peter, though since the 19th century more often referred to as the work of the Roman historian Cassius Dio's","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52532920123665,"sku":"NLS9780367866969","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780367866969.jpg?v=1760662770"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/routledge-classical-translations-book-series.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
