Far from reducing politics to affectivity, the political sociology of emotions is coterminous with political sociology itself plus the emotive angle added in the investigation of its traditional and more recent areas of research. The worldwide predominance of affective anti-politics (e.g., the securitization of immigration policies, reactionism, terrorism, competitive authoritarianism, nationalism and populism, etc.) makes the political sociology of emotions increasingly necessary in making the prospects of democracy and republicanism in the twenty-first century more intelligible. Through a weak constructionist theoretical perspective, the book shows the utility of this new sub-field by addressing two central themes: trauma and ressentiment. Trauma is considered as a key cultural-political phenomenon of our times, evoking both negative and positive emotions; ressentiment is a pertaining individual and collective political emotion allied to insecurities and moral injuries. In tandem, they constitute fundamental experiences of late modern times. The value of the political sociology of emotions is revealed in the analysis of civil wars, cultural traumas, the politics of pity, the suffering of distant others in the media, populism, and national identities on both sides of the Atlantic.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51001550143761,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51001552732433,"sku":"NIN9780367515720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454265159953,"sku":"NLS9780367515720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367515725.jpg?v=1751102685"},{"product_id":"governing-affects-book-otto-penz-9781032082332","title":"Governing Affects","description":"Governing Affects explores the neoliberal transformation of state governance in Europe towards affective forms of dominance exercised by customer-oriented neo-bureaucracies and public service providers. By investigating the rise of affective labour in contemporary European service societies and the conversion of state administrations into business-like public services, the authors trace the transformative power of neoliberal political thought as it is put into practice. The book examines new affective modes of subjectivation and activation of public employees, as well as their embodiment of affective requirements, to successfully guide and advise citizens. Neoliberalism induces a double agency in neo-bureaucrats: entrepreneurialism is coupled with affective skills for the purpose of governing clients in their own best interests. These competences are unevenly distributed between the genders, as their affective dispositions differ historically. Drawing on the theoretical concepts of Foucault and Bourdieu, the book offers innovative insights into recent processes of state transformation, affective subjectivation, and changes in labour relations. By combining theory building on governance with empirical research in key areas of state power, the book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in a broad range of disciplines, including political science, political sociology, and critical governance studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51017671966993,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51017673539857,"sku":"NIN9781032082332","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402845778193,"sku":"NLS9781032082332","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/103208233X.jpg?v=1751399455"},{"product_id":"social-love-and-the-critical-potential-of-people-book-silvia-cataldi-9781032107851","title":"Social Love and the Critical Potential of People","description":"This book unveils the concept of social love as a kind of \"Karst River\" that flows through the history of sociology, reassessing it as a form criticism by people in everyday life. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, this book offers both theoretical and empirical reflections on social love. It shows that love is not only central to the human experience, but that it can also help to interpret and intervene in social problems such as climate change, poverty, xenophobia, and the (post-)Covid crisis, recognizing people as actors in social change. It explores the idea of love as a key element in the promotion of solidarity and recognition in today’s plural and unequal societies. Based on empirical research on social love conducted through both qualitative and quantitative methods, especially in Europe and Latin America, this book explores the social dimension of love. Providing overviews on key questions and studies on current issues, the book is essential reference and resource for researchers, students, social workers, and professionals in social sciences, social philosophy, anthropology, social psychology, sociology of emotions and postmodern literature.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51137924563217,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51137928462609,"sku":"NIN9781032107851","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52588389237009,"sku":"NLS9781032107851","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032107855.jpg?v=1751237815"},{"product_id":"love-as-a-collective-action-book-adrian-scribano-9781032085616","title":"Love as a Collective Action","description":"This book makes evident how love, as an interstitial practice, produces a set of collective practices and how, through a mapping of these practices, it is possible to observe the connection between the politics of sensibilities and social conflict. The book provides – in the face of a global normalization of immediate enjoyment through consumption, the internationalization of fear and anxiety, the rise of \"post-truth\" and a distrust regarding politics – a systematic analysis of love as an interstitial practice. This book follows a sociology of body\/emotions approaches within which sensations, emotions and sensibilities are part of dialectical social structuration process. The book proposes love not only as an effect or trait of a society, but also as an analytical tool for better understanding the processes of social structuring. It connects a sociology of bodies\/emotions with a specific perspective on collective action and links conflictual structures and the politics of sensibilities in six Latin American countries by using a strategy of inquiry attuned to current patterns of social transformation, that of digital ethnography. This work is of interest to a wide public, those who want to know which emotions are the prevailing in Latin America, as well as specialists such as sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists and all researchers and graduate students who are interested in the connections between conflict, society and emotions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51223979852049,"sku":"NIN9781032085616","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52430841970961,"sku":"NLS9781032085616","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032085614.jpg?v=1751399463"},{"product_id":"social-love-and-the-critical-potential-of-people-book-silvia-cataldi-9781032107820","title":"Social Love and the Critical Potential of People","description":"This book unveils the concept of social love as a kind of \"Karst River\" that flows through the history of sociology, reassessing it as a form criticism by people in everyday life. What are the emotions involved in building and sustaining solidarity? What can we learn from previous “waves” of feminist activism, and what is worth saving in social media activism today? These questions are tackled via the discourse analysis of hashtagged posts of two popular feminist hashtags in Brazil (#PrimeiroAssédio and #MeuAmigoSecreto) and interviews with Brazilian feminist actors. But instead of merely analysing the content of the hashtags or over-celebrating aesthetics, I interpret them as empirical evidence of the emotional life of varied feminisms and therefore useful to reflect upon historical build-ups and dissipation of solidarity. The unique feature of the book is making a bridge between sociology of emotions, feminist theory, and decolonial, Black, and Global South literature and praxis that articulate solidarity based on principles of difference instead of sameness. This book will be of interest to students, scholars, teachers, activists, and community members interested in the emotions involved in building and sustaining feminist solidarity from a non-Western perspective.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51597282443537,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51597283164433,"sku":"NGR9781032499178","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52596764213521,"sku":"NLS9781032499178","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032499176.jpg?v=1751111862"},{"product_id":"interactional-justice-book-lisa-flower-9780367248796","title":"Interactional Justice","description":"Interactional Justice explores the accomplishment of loyalty by focusing on defence lawyers work in the emotionally and interactionally constraining situation of the criminal trial.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52429188694289,"sku":"NLS9780367248796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53081512640785,"sku":"NIN9780367248796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780367248796.jpg?v=1759166276"},{"product_id":"emotions-in-late-modernity-book-roger-patulny-9780815354321","title":"Emotions in Late Modernity","description":"This international collection discusses how the individualised, reflexive, late modern era has changed the way we experience and act on our feelings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52486912770321,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52486914048273,"sku":"NLS9780815354321","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780815354321.jpg?v=1759859962"},{"product_id":"governing-affects-book-otto-penz-9780815380740","title":"Governing Affects","description":"Governing Affects explores the neoliberal transformation of state governance in Europe towards affective forms of dominance exercised by customer-oriented neo-bureaucracies and public service providers.
