The crux of the study is a detailed account of Giardini’s partnership with the music seller\/publisher John Cox during the 1750s, presented using new biographical information which contextualizes their business dealings and subsequent disaccord. The resulting litigation, the details of which have only recently come to light, is explored here via a complex set of archival materials. The findings offer new information about the economics of professional music culture at the time, including detailed figures for performers’ fees, the printing and binding of music scores, the charges arising from the administration of concerts and operas, the sale, hire and repair of various instruments and the cost of what today we would call intellectual property rights. This is a fascinating study for musicologists and followers of Giardini, as well as for readers with an interest in classical music, social history and legal history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50697159115025,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697162359057,"sku":"NGR9780367322052","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52154795458833,"sku":"NLS9780367322052","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52735167201553,"sku":"NIN9780367322052","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367322056.jpg?v=1750781316"},{"product_id":"malmariee-in-the-thirteenth-century-motet-book-dolores-pesce-9781032371207","title":"The Malmariee in the Thirteenth-Century Motet","description":"This monograph offers a comprehensive study of the topos of the malmariee or the unhappily married woman within the thirteenth-century motet repertory, a vocal genre characterized by several different texts sounding simultaneously over a foundational Latin chant.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698452664593,"sku":"NGR9781032371207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51235531227409,"sku":"NIN9781032371207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52596026540305,"sku":"NLS9781032371207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/103237120X.jpg?v=1750751426"},{"product_id":"music-theory-in-late-medieval-avignon-book-karen-m-cook-9780367691301","title":"Music Theory in Late Medieval Avignon","description":"The manuscript Seville, Biblioteca Colombina y Capitular 5-2-25, a composite of dozens of theoretical treatises, is one of the primary witnesses to late medieval music theory. In this monograph, Cook demonstrates that a small group of such works, linked to the otherwise unknown Magister Johannes Pipudi, is in fact much more noteworthy than previous scholarship has observed. The not one but two copies of De arte cantus are in fact one of the earliest known sources for the Libellus cantus mensurabilis, purportedly by Jean des Murs and the most widely copied music theory treatise of its day, while Regulae contrapunctus, Nota quod novem sunt species contrapunctus, and a concluding set of notes in Catalan are early witnesses to the popular Ars contrapuncti treatises also attributed to des Murs. Disclosing newly discovered biographical information, it is revealed that Pipudi is most likely one Johannes Pipardi, familiar to Cardinal Jean de Blauzac, Vicar-General of Avignon. Cook provides the first biographical assessment for him and shows that late fourteenth-century Avignon was a plausible chronological and geographical milieu for the Seville treatises, hinting provocatively at a possible route of transmission for the Libellus from Paris to Italy. First, in terms of music theory, it proposes a new theory of tonal function that returns to the theories of Hugo Riemann to rediscover a development of his thought that has been covered over by the recent project of neo-Riemannian theory. Second, in terms of its philosophical approach, it reawakens the critical-theoretical examination of the relation between music and the late capitalist society that is sedimented in the musical materials themselves, and which the music, in turn, subjects to aesthetically embodied critique. The music, the theory, and the listeners and critics who respond to them are all radically reimagined. This book will be of interest to professional music theorists, undergraduates, and technically inclined musicians and listeners, that is, anyone who is fascinated by the chromatic magic of late-nineteenth-century music.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698873176337,"sku":"NGR9781032025056","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51017070903569,"sku":"NIN9781032025056","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52584499380497,"sku":"NLS9781032025056","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032025050.jpg?v=1751080192"},{"product_id":"salomon-and-the-burneys-book-ian-woodfield-9780754636120","title":"Salomon and the Burneys","description":"Johann Peter Salomon, the celebrated violinist and impresario, made his debut in England in March 1781. History has credited Salomon with bringing Haydn to London, yet as Ian Woodfield reveals in this monograph, Salomon's introduction of the composer to the London musical scene owed as much to luck as to skilful planning. Haydn's engagement in London proved to be a much-needed uplift to Salomon's career which, as Woodfield illustrates, had been on the wane for a number of years. In addition to its reassessment of Salomon's uneven career in London during the 1780s, this book throws light on the general relationship between public and private spheres of professional music-making at the time, and on the relationship between the social and professional attributes required of musicians if they were to be successful. Nowhere are these tensions better illustrated than in the letters and journals of the Burney family, especially those of Susan Burney, which are drawn on in the book to provide a vivid picture of the fiercely competitive musical world of eighteenth-century London.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50919872135441,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50919872299281,"sku":"GOR014123378","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0754636127.jpg?v=1751436862"},{"product_id":"johann-matthesons-pieces-de-clavecin-and-das-neu-eroffnete-orchestre-book-margaret-seares-9780367669300","title":"Johann Matthesons Pieces de clavecin and Das neu-eroffnete Orchestre","description":"In this important study, Margaret Seares places Johannes Mattheson's Pi ces de clavecin (1714) in the context of his work as a public intellectual who encouraged German musicians and their musical public to embrace a universalism of style and expression derived from contemporary currents in music of the leading European nations. Mo does not explicitly attribute any of its compositions, but theoretical sources name Petrus de Cruce as the composer of the two motets that open fascicle 7, and three later motets in this fascicle are elsewhere ascribed to Adam de la Halle. This monograph reveals a musical and textual quotation of Adam’s Aucun se sont loe incipit at the outset of Petrus’s Aucun ont trouve triplum, and it explores various invocations of Adam and Petrus – their works and techniques – within further anonymous compositions. Authorship is additionally considered from the perspective of two new types of motets especially prevalent in fascicle 7: motets that name musicians, as well as those based on vernacular song or instrumental melodies, some of which are identified by the names of their creators. This book offers new insights into the musical, poetic, and curatorial reception of thirteenth-century composers’ works in their own time. It uncovers, beneath the surface of an anonymous motet book, unsuspected interactions between authors and traces of compositional identities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51210778149137,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51210780934417,"sku":"NIN9781032194578","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52453282480401,"sku":"NLS9781032194578","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/103219457X.jpg?v=1751268802"},{"product_id":"felice-giardini-and-professional-music-culture-in-mid-eighteenth-century-london-book-cheryll-duncan-9781032088044","title":"Felice Giardini and Professional Music Culture in Mid-Eighteenth-Century London","description":"Felice Giardini and Professional Music Culture in Mid-Eighteenth-Century London explores Giardini’s influence on British musical life through his multifaceted career as performer, teacher, composer, concert promoter and opera impresario. Part I examines the malmariée motets from three vantage points: (1) in light of contemporaneous canonist views on marriage; (2) to what degree the French malmariée texts in the upper voices treat the messages inherent in the underlying Latin chant through parody and\/or allegory; and (3) interactions among upper-voice texts that invite additional interpretations focused on gender issues. Part II investigates the transmission profile of the motets, as well as of their refrains, revealing not only intertextual refrain usage between the motets and other genres, but also a significant number of shared refrains between malmariée motets and other motets. Part II furthermore offers insights on the chronology of composition within a given intertextual refrain nexus, and examines how a refrain’s meaning can change in a new context. Finally, based on the transmission profile, Part II argues for a lively interest in the topos in the 1270s and 1280s, both through composition of new motets and compilation of earlier ones, with Paris and Arras playing a prominent role.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51233450000657,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51233452785937,"sku":"NIN9781032371214","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52596340392209,"sku":"NLS9781032371214","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032371218.jpg?v=1751399913"},{"product_id":"music-theory-in-late-medieval-avignon-book-karen-m-cook-9780367691288","title":"Music Theory in Late Medieval Avignon","description":"The manuscript Seville, Biblioteca Colombina y Capitular 5-2-25, a composite of dozens of theoretical treatises, is one of the primary witnesses to late medieval music theory. Written shortly after Stalin's death, the work marks a turning point in the composer's output and in the history of Russian music, heralding the possibility of a new creative direction for Soviet artists. David Fanning's close analysis of the 10th sheds light on issues associated with the genre of the twentieth-century epic symphony, issues of structure and expression, unity and contrast. Florentín Giménez (1925–2021) stands as one of the most prolific Paraguayan composers of both concert and folk music-style works. Colman argues that not only Giménez’s musical nationalism was a lens to reflect an ideal Paraguayan cultural identity, but indeed a means to develop it. Topics are approached with a threefold goal in mind: to provide a biography of the composer, to consider the various cultural themes associated with his compositions, and to give an overview of his symphonies. A chronological list of his compositions—including the dates of their premieres, soloists, ensembles, and conductors—appears in the Appendix as a reference guide.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51599103951121,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51599104999697,"sku":"NGR9781041058069","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52614401720593,"sku":"NLS9781041058069","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1041058063.jpg?v=1759229061"},{"product_id":"skryabin-philosophy-and-the-music-of-desire-book-kenneth-m-smith-9781041089094","title":"Skryabin, Philosophy and the Music of Desire","description":"Commentary on Skryabin has struggled to situate an understanding of the composer's music within his idiosyncratic philosophical world views. Early commentators' efforts to do so failed to establish a thorough or systematic approach. And later twentieth-century studies turned away from the composer's ideology, focusing instead on 'the music itself' with an analytic approach that scrutinized Skryabin's harmonic language in isolation from his philosophy. This groundbreaking study revisits the questions surrounding the composer's music within his own philosophy, but draws on new methodological tools, casting Skryabin's music in the light not only of his own philosophy of desire, but of more refined semiotic-psychoanalytical theory and modern techniques of music analysis. An interdisciplinary methodology corrects the narrow focus of Skryabin scholarship of the last century, offering insights from New Musicology and recent music theory that lead to hermeneutical, critically informed readings of selected works.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51629205422353,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51629205618961,"sku":"NGR9781041089094","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1041089090.jpg?v=1750854632"},{"product_id":"music-books-and-theatre-in-eighteenth-century-exton-book-colin-timms-9781032627854","title":"Music, Books and Theatre in Eighteenth-Century Exton","description":"This book establishes the cultural background to the productions of Milton’s Comus that were staged in the 1740s by Baptist Noel, 4th Earl of Gainsborough, at Exton Hall, his country seat in the East Midlands of England. The author reveals that Handel’s visit in 1745 occurred in a richer and fuller context of cultural interests among the Noel family. Most of the music at Exton was selected from existing works by Handel, but the four movements of the finale were new, written by the composer specifically for the occasion. The study is based on receipted bills and other documents in an archival collection of Noel family papers that provide evidence of the Earl’s purchase of books and music and of the musical and theatrical activities undertaken on his Exton estate. The author discusses the Earl’s interests in music, books and theatre, indicating a belief in performance as a valuable and enjoyable experience and as a vehicle for the education of the young. In addition to creating a context for Comus, this book sheds light on cultural life in a mid-eighteenth-century English country house and how the Earl’s productions made a significant contribution to the cultural life of the East Midlands. The book will be of great value to cultural musicologists, historians and Handelians, as the documentation sheds a huge amount of light on a variety of cultural practices in eighteenth-century England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52093945643281,"sku":"NGR9781032627854","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52617019752721,"sku":"NLS9781032627854","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53472055296273,"sku":"NIN9781032627854","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781032627854.jpg?v=1756982056"},{"product_id":"disinformation-in-mass-media-book-beverly-jerold-9780367350178","title":"Disinformation in Mass Media","description":"The founding in 1777 of the Journal de Paris, Frances first daily and distinctly commercial paper, represents an early use of disinformation as a tool for political gain, profit, and societal division.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52334773272849,"sku":"NLS9780367350178","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780367350178.jpg?v=1758157942"},{"product_id":"pre-history-of-the-midsummer-marriage-book-roger-savage-9780367243166","title":"The Pre-History of 'the Midsummer Marriage'","description":"The Pre-History of The Midsummer Marriage examines the early collaborative phase (1943 to 1946) in the making of Michael Tippetts first mature opera and charts the developments that grew out of that phase.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52336952049937,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52336952672529,"sku":"NLS9780367243166","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780367243166.jpg?v=1758165053"},{"product_id":"authorship-and-identity-in-late-thirteenth-century-motets-book-catherine-a-bradley-9781032194608","title":"Authorship and Identity in Late Thirteenth-Century Motets","description":"This monograph reveals a musical and textual quotation of Adam's Aucun se sont loe incipit at the outset of Petrus's Aucun ont trouve triplum, and it explores various invocations of Adam and Petrus-their works and techniques-within further anonymous compositions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52434188009745,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52434188599569,"sku":"NLS9781032194608","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781032194608.jpg?v=1759180003"},{"product_id":"gregorio-ballabenes-forty-eight-part-mass-for-twelve-choirs-1772-book-florian-bassani-9781032128931","title":"Gregorio Ballabene’s Forty-eight-part Mass for Twelve Choirs (1772)","description":"Neither Spem in alium, the widely acclaimed ‘songe of fortie partes’ by Thomas Tallis, nor Alessandro Striggio’s forty-part Mass is the largest-scale counterpoint work in Western music. The actual winner is Gregorio Ballabene, a relatively unknown Roman maestro di cappella, a contemporary of Giovanni Paisiello, Joseph Haydn and Luigi Boccherini, who composed in forty-eight parts for twelve choirs. His Mass saw only a public rehearsal and was never performed liturgically despite all of Ballabene’s efforts to promote it. On closer inspection, however, the work deserves special consideration as a piece of outstanding combinatory creativity – the product of a talent able to conceive, structure and realise a project of colossal dimensions. It might even be claimed that if Charles Burney had gained knowledge of it, all derogatory comments by nineteenth-century music historians would not have succeeded in extinguishing the interest of later generations. Ballabene’s Mass has remained completely unstudied until today, even though the score survives in prominent collections. This study offers, for the first time, a historical and analytical perspective on this overlooked manifestation of a very individual musical intelligence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52435579306257,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52435579928849,"sku":"NLS9781032128931","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781032128931.jpg?v=1759184203"},{"product_id":"weberns-lost-cello-sonata-and-music-in-the-aphoristic-style-book-rajan-lal-9781041159001","title":"Webern’s Lost Cello Sonata and Music in the Aphoristic Style","description":"This book offers a music-analytical and historical exploration of the ‘aphoristic style’; small yet strident modernist works written by the Second Viennese School between 1909 and 1914, challenging long-held misconceptions about early twentieth-century atonal music. Lal establishes the nature and chronology of the aphoristic corpus, exploring the matter of modernist ‘priority’ particularly important to Arnold Schoenberg and Anton von Webern. This study also explores the complex intertextual nature of aphoristic works written less as ‘contextual’ enterprises and more as responses to other similarly proportioned miniatures. In music-analytical and music-theoretical terms, the book offers the first major analysis of the extant movement of Webern’s Cello Sonata (1914), before using this death-knell of the aphoristic style as a springboard to generalise an approachable but mathematically rigorous harmonic lexicon for post-tonal music. Concepts such as symmetry, primitive views of sustained harmonic devices, and ternary form are used to argue that as the harmonies of the aphoristic corpus look into the future, other features simultaneously wrestle such works into an imagined primordial musical past. This book will be of interest to music theorists, historians of the long-nineteenth and twentieth centuries, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and all those intrigued by the relationship between music theory and musical style in the age of the ‘emancipation of dissonance’.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52819374473489,"sku":"NGR9781041159001","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53259547083025,"sku":"NLS9781041159001","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781041159001.jpg?v=1773917205"},{"product_id":"cyclic-mass-book-james-cook-9780367661601","title":"The Cyclic Mass","description":"To understand English music in the fifteenth century is to understand it within the two-way cultural exchange with the continent, and the genre of the Mass cycle is very much at the forefront of this. It offers at once a new history of the rise of the Benedictines of Solesmes to official dominance over Catholic editions of plainchant worldwide, a new optic on the French liturgical publishing industry during a period of international crisis for the publication of plainchant notation, and an exploration of how, both despite and because of official hostility, French Catholics could bend Republican anticlericalism at the highest level to their own ends. The narrative relates how Auguste P coul, a former French diplomat and Benedictine novice, masterminded an undercover campaign to aid the Gregorian agenda of the Solesmes monks via French government intervention at the Vatican. His vehicle: trades unionists from within the book industry, whom he mobilized into nationalist protest against Vatican attempts to enshrine a single, contested, and German, version of the musical text as canon law. Yet the political scheming necessitated by P coul's double involvement with Solesmes and the print unions almost spun out of control as his Benedictine contacts struggled with internal division and anticlerical persecution. The results are as musicologically significant for the study of Solesmes as they are instructive for the study of Church-State relations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53651861668113,"sku":"NLS9781032929552","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781032929552.jpg?v=1781350670"},{"product_id":"genesis-and-development-of-an-english-organ-sonata-book-iain-quinn-9780367884048","title":"The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata","description":"This volume considers the influences and development of the English organ sonata tradition that began in the 1850s with compositions by W.
