Over 100 years ago the first Secretary of the Smith- sonian Institution, and more recently Dr. Vannevar Bush while proposing the modern expansion of the National Institutes of Health, both noted prob- lems that prevented the proper utilization of information by individuals in medical and related scientific fields. These observations, tagether with con- comitant implications of future difficulty, are particularly pertinent to the field of oncology. The rapid evolution of the latter discipline has largely been aided by the incorporation of concepts and methods developed over a long period of time, and drawn from a wide variety of other scientific fields. The large body of discoveries that have contributed to our current understanding of neoplasia, however, cannot be viewed as being made up of equal parts. They bring to mind Claude Bernard's view des determinismes simples et complexes in the physiological and biochemical regulation of bod- ily functions. He was able to observe that the most important and basic of physiologic processes were destined to be fewer in number than those of less fundamental and more highly specialized purpose. He understood that in the future development of medical science, sturlies of the lauer would occupy much of the time and attention of investigators, and were likely to contribute much to scientific literature.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143586902289,"sku":"NLS9781468424447","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468424447.jpg?v=1757585136"},{"product_id":"cancer-stress-and-death-book-j-tache-9781468434613","title":"Cancer, Stress, and Death","description":"When I delivered the keynote address at our joint 1977 symposium on Cancer, Stress, and Death in Montreal, I took great pride in announcing my unique qualification for this singular honor-I had survived a normally fatal cancer, a histiocytic reticulosarcoma that had developed under the skin of my thigh several years pre- viously. Faced with the physical and emotional realities of this situa- tion, I refused to retreat from life in desperation. I immediately underwent surgery and cobalt therapy, but insisted on knowing my chances for a lasting recovery, which at that time seemed far from encouraging. Although I knew it would take tremendous self-discipline, I was determined to continue living and working without worrying about the outcome. I suppressed any thoughts of my ostensibly imminent death, but rewrote my will, including in it several suggestions for the continuation of my work by my colleagues. Having taken care of that business, I promptly forced myself to disregard the whole calamity. I immersed myself in my work-and I survived  But, of course, this was not my only reason for my feelings of pride and accomplishment.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52454767329553,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454767919377,"sku":"NLS9781468434613","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468434613.jpg?v=1759372170"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/sloan-kettering-institute-cancer-series-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
