Urbanization is an important trend in current land-use change, with up to 70% of the world population projected to live in cities by 2050. How will this rapid urbanization alter the face of Europe? What are the environmental consequences of the expansion of megacities? These and other important questions are addressed in the Megacities 2050 Proceedings of the VI International Conference on Landscape Architecture to Support City Sustainable Development. Megapolises are complex ecosystems, and their air and water quality, vegetation and soils are exposed to anthropogenic influences. The book discusses advanced approaches and techniques to monitor, model and assess environmental consequences and risks in megapolises and offers solutions to the environmental problems of modern megapolises. It also presents successful, sustainable urban-development projects from Europe and beyond, including the management and design of green infrastructure, waste management, run-off purification and remediation of urban soils.  Focusing on urban soils and ecosystems, the book is intended for experts in various fields of geography, urban studies and planning, and environmental sciences, including those in the scientific and research community, municipal services, environmental protection agencies, stakeholders working in urban management and greenery, landscape architects, civil engineers and policy-makers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736764752145,"sku":"NGR9783319705569","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319705563.jpg?v=1751317110"},{"product_id":"nile-water-conflict-and-the-grand-ethiopian-renaissance-dam-book-wossenu-abtew-9783031786563","title":"Nile Water Conflict and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam","description":"The book follows on from “The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile” GERD. It will have a good background introduction on the Nile basin. The value of Nile water will be presented in view of the global water stress facing mankind and the region. International importance of Nile waters will be presented with food insecurity of regions outside the basin. Food and energy demand in the upper basin and potential upstream irrigation demand on Nile waters will be presented. Analysis of the GERD three years of filling, remaining filling years, and modes of operation will be presented along with the water conflict. Climate change and climate variation (droughts and floods) impacts on the water control of 56 percent of the Nile flow (the Blue Nile and the GERD), and ensuing water war require analysis and publication. One of the major features of the Nile is the Sudd marshes in South Sudan. The importance of wetlands in the hydroclimate of the Nile basin and the merit and demerits of draining the Sudd, to get more water on the short term, will be presented. The Everglades in the United States will be presented as a global experience in regional wetland drainage and its impact on regional hydroclimate.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51384800674065,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51384802083089,"sku":"NIN9783031786563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51384803852561,"sku":"NGR9783031786563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031786564.jpg?v=1750999414"},{"product_id":"urban-commons-future-smart-cities-and-sustainability-book-uday-chatterjee-9783031247699","title":"Urban Commons, Future Smart Cities and Sustainability","description":"This book provides a critical theoretical framework for understanding the implementation and development of smart cities as innovation drivers, with long-term effects on productivity, livability, and the sustainability of specific initiatives. Moreover, the perceptions of the local communities regarding these landscapes are examined, using online questionnaires with over 400 participants. This research highlights the need for an integrated management system, building stronger rural communities able to manage change and continuity. Five pillars to build the resilience of these landscapes have been provided, with schemes and figures, requiring a people-centered approach in their management. This book demonstrates strong connections between identity and landscape resilience, especially in inlandareas where the sense of identity is most prominent. This gathering addresses the main issues of contemporary political geography and international relations, providing a platform for discussion and collaboration between an international array of experts primarily in the fields of political geography, geopolitics, and international relations. The first section of this volume focuses on international relations, addressing issues such as multipolarity, small states, transport cooperation, politico-geographical processes, and international security in the context of geographic space. Building on these spatially rooted themes, section two presents contributions that focus on the dual processes of globalization or regionalism. Authors of these chapters use historical frameworks to interrogate the nation state, ideology, identity, symbolisms, sovereignty, and memory. In section three, the focus narrows to specific domestic policies—such as those related to gender, public services, elections, and corruption prevention—situated in contemporary conversations about digital transformations. Section four turns to instruments of cultural policy, examining tourism and (in a new addition in response to developments in the field) education. Similarly, section five introduces a theme new to the conference: migration and socio-demographic processes. These chapters evaluate national, regional, and local aspects of migration and multiculturalism. The final section turns to the still-pressing theme of sustainable development, taking up case studies of nations and international organizations grappling with questions about sustainable growth, political ecology, and environmental culture. The content of the book will be interesting to experts, academics, and students.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51717834146065,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51717835030801,"sku":"NGR9783031708855","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031708857.jpg?v=1750837015"},{"product_id":"proceedings-of-topical-issues-in-international-political-geography-tipg-2022-book-radomir-bolgov-9783031504099","title":"Proceedings of Topical Issues in International Political Geography (TIPG 2022)","description":"This proceedings book provides selections from the 2022 Topical Issues in International Political Geography (TIPG) meeting. Sprawl is a multifaceted phenomenon that needs to be quantified with distinct measures and during an enough long observation period. Landscape change is recognized to be a relevant topic when studying the impact of urban growth and sprawl on peri-urban land. In the kaleidoscopic panorama of urban Europe, Mediterranean cities represent an element that breaks with the stereotypes of the 'old continent' urbanities. Originally developed according to a purely mono-centric structure, which grew radio-centrically with the progressive addition of satellite urban areas, Mediterranean cities have more recently oriented their growth path towards dispersed settlement models. This resulted in a high consumption of land, in contrast with the 'judicious compactness' that characterized the tumultuous development of the cities at least in the first three decades after World War II. This book tells, through narratives, photographs, qualitative-quantitative descriptions of landscapes, maps and indicators, the transition from a compact model—`judiciously mono-centric' and `land saving'—to contemporary sprawl, with practical implications in economic geography. The environmental, social and economic implications of this phenomenon, far from being a unique characteristic of the European Mediterranean region, have been also discussed, and the planning and policy implications addressed with respect to the individual ecological problems faced from time to time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51728315384081,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51728315842833,"sku":"NGR9783031857980","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031857984.jpg?v=1751252671"},{"product_id":"digital-geography-book-radomir-bolgov-9783031506116","title":"Digital Geography","description":"This proceedings book presents select papers from the International Conference on Internet and Modern Society (IMS 2022). The book is a research of the surface and subsurface hydrological processes as a result of over-exploitation for agricultural production and irrigation, which resulted in a significant drop in water even during pre-monsoon period and a charge up study to control surface and subsurface water scarcity. Recent and expected trends indicate that future water challenges will become more complex. Over-exploitation of groundwater and surface water scarcity are posing an increasing threat to food security and rural livelihood stability. Understanding the features of groundwater and surface water and how they interact with the environment, population, and social aspects is a difficult challenge for researchers, they must provide guidance for sustainable resource management while balancing economic efficiency and ecological health. This book stands out for its focus on using geospatial and geostatistical methods to tackle practical issues. The chapters demonstrate how advanced analytical tools can be used to extract useful insights from complex hydrological datasets, such as mapping surface water flow patterns and delineating groundwater contamination plumes. Additionally, including case studies from various geographic areas offers readers a worldwide view on hydrological challenges and approaches to managing them. This book acts as a catalyst for more research and dialogue in the areas of Environmental Sciences, Geography, Hydrology, Natural Hazards, Geospatial Sciences, Remote Sensing \u0026amp; GIS, Agriculture, Crop-Science, Forestry, Soil Science, Agronomy, Humanistic \u0026amp; Social Sciences, etc., promoting organization in the field of surface and sub-surface hydrology. When it comes to rural issues in contemporary China, there is no shortage of national strategies: from “Coordinating Urban–Rural Development” in 2003 to “Rural Revitalization” in 2017, the rejuvenation of the countryside has attracted unprecedented policy interest. At the same time, rural governance has been subject to significant political, social and economic changes. However, comparatively little research has been conducted on the phenomenal reconnection between the state and rural society, and our previous understanding of rural governance is no longer adequate. As a result of the programs, a new model of governance is now emerging in rural China. The programs have accelerated the formation of state-private-farmer partnerships, while also promoting the participation of grassroots society in rural reconstruction. In the initial stage, the state’s role is important to securing non-governmental sectors’ engagement. However, this does not mean that the model guarantees sustainable governance: in terms of land tenure reform, infrastructure investment, and subsidies, the programs merely empower farmers and other stakeholders to engage in rural reconstruction. The success of these reconstruction efforts ultimately depends on a suitable pricing mechanism for public goods provision, as well as the self-organization of grassroots society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52342795043089,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52342795600145,"sku":"NLS9789811516627","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789811516627.jpg?v=1758173025"},{"product_id":"shanghai-urbanism-at-the-medium-scale-book-yongjie-sha-9783642542022","title":"Shanghai Urbanism at the Medium Scale","description":"This book focuses on observing and understanding the urban planning and relevant development patterns applied to the creation of urban districts against the backdrop of the current rapid urbanization and transformation of Shanghai on its way to becoming a world city. Even in Korea and the United Kingdom, the most centralised countries in the OECD, local government powers have increased, with substantial economic benefits. Within the European Union, the principle of subsidiarity has enshrined the idea of devolution. New member states, particularly in central and eastern Europe, have significantly created new and self-sufficient local and regional governments. However, this process has been complicated. Devolution is not a panacea in its own right, and need not lead to economic growth. While it can encourage savings through collaboration, it can also lead to confused lines of authority and can complicate policy formation and implantation. Devolution can strain local budgets, forcing local governments to rely on their own sources of finance, rather than central government transfers. Suburbanisation, rural depopulation, the growth of some regions, and the decline of others have raised new problems, particularly related to inter-governmental cooperation among local governments and different levels of government. In many cases, an increased number of governments has increased administrative costs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52347528216849,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52347532378385,"sku":"NLS9789400755024","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789400755024.jpg?v=1758177561"},{"product_id":"principles-of-geotourism-book-anze-chen-9783662526170","title":"The Principles of Geotourism","description":"The book introduces tourism earth-science as a new scientific discipline by applying the principles of earth-science in the study of natural and human tourism resources. Monsoon Asia, with its huge and still increasing population and rapid socioeconomic changes, is regarded as a major hot spot of global change in general and of land use change in particular. The major issues include urbanization, rural development, land-related problems such as food problems, and disasters in the context of global change and sustainability. Future Earth, the new international research framework established by International Council for Science (ICSU), the International Social Science Council (ISSC), and other international academic or funding organizations for a sustainable world, has chosen the Global Land Project (GLP) as one of the first such international projects it has endorsed that originated from International Geosphere\/Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and\/or International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP). This endorsement is a clear indication of the importance of the issues related to land use and its changes. Land use change is an essential driving force of environmental change, a result of socioeconomic and environmental changes, and is a major environmental change itself. Because of this complex and multifaceted nature and the difficulties in obtaining relevant data with historical depth, this phenomenon has not been studied fully in the context of global change or sustainability. The first part of the book is dedicated to the motivations and the theoretical premises from which the research originates, connected to the concept of land and those of sustainable urban form. The second part concerns the complex path towards a sustainable use of land, both in terms of institutional and regulatory measures, and in terms of knowledge and understanding of soil degradation processes. This research focuses on the Mediterranean area which is discussed in more detail in the third part. In this part of Europe we try to establish relationships between settlement dynamics and land quality: here fragile ecosystems are diffused both from a biological point of view. physical as well as socio-economic, here we find landscapes that are particularly sensitive to land degradation processes (subject to land degradation, considered the antipodes of land quality) and which in recent decades have been particularly affected by anthropic pressure. In the fourth part, an analysis is presented concerning 76 metropolitan areas representative of southern Europe. The methodology used in this analysis is based on the relationship that exists between soil sealing (or soil waterproofing) and land degradation (or land degradation) aimed at an interpretation, at the metropolitan scale, of how in southern Europe the pattern of Urbanization (compact, dispersive, intermediate) affects the land's ability to support both natural processes and agricultural production activities in a diversified way. In particular, the data on land quality and data on land use were considered together in order to analyze the processes of urban growth and the occupation of productive land for a very large area that includes Greece, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and some parts of the Adriatic coast. There is still a long way to go, in terms of sharing, integration and definition of strategies aimed at achieving certain targets. A necessary and innovative look towards land quality could help to consider the protection of the soil as a whole, even at the planning level.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52404204470545,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404205256977,"sku":"NLS9783030947316","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030947316.jpg?v=1758763605"},{"product_id":"settlement-spaces-urban-survival-prospects-of-chinas-special-communities-book-xiao-wu-9789811648946","title":"Settlement Spaces: Urban Survival Prospects of China’s Special Communities","description":"This book examines the settlement space of special communities in China on the community scale from an interdisciplinary approach that combines perspectives from urban planning and sociology. Using the framework of integration response, it theoretically and empirically explores the approaches these communities adopt to survive and evolve. Empirically, this discussion centers on four particular groups, namely international students, land-lost peasants, ethnic minorities, and migrant workers, and offers an analysis of their settlement spaces from different perspectives. Theoretically, this study optimizes the logic of one-way integration as used in classical theories. By constructing a two-way linkage in the theoretical framework of integration response, it provides a multi-scenario interpretation and summary of the laws of survival and evolution that govern the urban settlements of special communities in China. This study conforms to the major transformations that China has undergonein the concepts, models, and orientation of its development since the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. Furthermore, it renders profound research value and bears practical significance for the adjustment and management of urban spatial patterns in China, social care for marginalized groups, and the construction of a harmonious and moderately prosperous society. Geographers and philosophers share the responsibility for that. On the one hand, geographers have considered as a dangerous deviation any attempt to elaborate an image of the Earth which was not a mere replica of a cartographic representation. On the other hand, philosophers have generally been uninterested in a discipline offering little chance for critical reflection. In light of these considerations, the purpose of this book is to identify some fundamental philosophical issues involved in the reflection of geography by adopting a perspective which looks at the discipline with a specific focus on its fundamental concepts and distinctions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52409740362001,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52409741017361,"sku":"NLS9783030771577","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030771577.jpg?v=1758775773"},{"product_id":"black-sea-book-emil-vespremeanu-9783319890012","title":"The Black Sea","description":"This book underpins the geography of the Black Sea, covering topics such as morphology, morphography, geology, and history of the Black Sea. Focusing on urban soils and ecosystems, the book is intended for experts in various fields of geography, urban studies and planning, and environmental sciences, including those in the scientific and research community, municipal services, environmental protection agencies, stakeholders working in urban management and greenery, landscape architects, civil engineers and policy-makers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52418386100497,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418386952465,"sku":"NGR9783319889603","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319889603.jpg?v=1758929041"},{"product_id":"vegetation-history-and-cultural-landscapes-book-alexander-fehr-9783319868219","title":"Vegetation History and Cultural Landscapes","description":"This book focuses on the vegetation history of the cultural landscape in southwestern Slovakia, which was established and adopted by mankind and has since constantly evolved in response to ongoing changes (in environmental conditions, biodiversity, land use, etc.). The book analyses four dominant ecosystems typical for the cultural landscape and affected by humans: woodlands, wetlands, grasslands and agricultural land. Each ecosystem is discussed in separate chapters. The chapters include (a) basic information, general aspects, development processes, trends and interpretations, (b) a published or non-published case study based on the author’s own research, and (c) an extensive bibliography. A set of maps on the vegetation history and indices of geographical names and plants names serve to round out the coverage. The work provides an essential point of departure for describing the typical regional characteristics of the cultural landscape, with an eye to its future preservatio n.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52418487779601,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418488402193,"sku":"NGR9783319868219","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"basic-principles-of-topography-book-blagoja-markoski-9783319721460","title":"Basic Principles of Topography","description":"This book gives a comprehensive overview of all relevant elements in topography and their practical application. What are the environmental consequences of megacities’ expansion? What are smart solutions to make life in cities safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly? These and other important questions are addressed by the conference Smart and Sustainable Cities (SSC). This year’s theme for the conference will be « Sustainable urban ecosystems: challenges and solutions». Megapolises are complex ecosystems. Air and water quality, vegetation, and soils in megapolises are exposed to anthropogenic influence. Studying negative environmental consequences of the anthropogenic and technogenic pressures is among the key tasks of urban ecology and environmental impact assessment. Advanced approaches and smart technologies to monitor, model, and assess environmental consequences and risks in megapolises will be widely discussed at the conference. Searching for solutions of the environmental problems of modern megapolises will be the key point of the conference. Successful experiences of sustainable urban development and nature-based solutions to support climate adaptation, carbon neutrality, and human health will be presented in the conference proceedings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418583494929,"sku":"NGR9783031372186","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"geography-of-world-pilgrimages-book-lucrezia-lopez-9783031322112","title":"Geography of World Pilgrimages","description":"This book points out how pilgrimage studies rely on interdisciplinary academic interests, being always more determined by anthropological, social, cultural and economic factors. The volume gathers interdisciplinary contributions revealing different approaches and academic interests when researching pilgrimage. Finally, the proposal introduces a comparative international breath to reflect upon such complex phenomenon that since Antiquity still impregnates the history of human being across the world.  As pilgrimage studies are closely related to mobility issues, how the contemporary mobile world is altering and re-signifying pilgrimage dynamics and meanings will also be discussed in detail. The term “pilgrimage” evokes key concepts deriving from different fields, all of them collected in the final glossary. The primary audience of this work are academics and researchers from different fields involved in pilgrimage studies. The work may also be useful in teaching (advanced) university courses.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52418636644625,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418637332753,"sku":"NGR9783031322112","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"basic-principles-of-topography-book-blagoja-markoski-9783319891484","title":"Basic Principles of Topography","description":"This book gives a comprehensive overview of all relevant elements in topography and their practical application. It provides approaches to intervention, through rehabilitation and upgrade, eventually in participative manner. To such evaluation and promotion a couple of disciplines can contribute such as history of art, geography and communication science and of course (landscape) architecture. The field of landscape architecture reunites points of view from such different disciplines with a view to an active approach a contemporary intervention or conservation.
