Key Features of this Second Edition: The Riemann hypothesis is given a natural geometric reformulation in the context of vibrating fractal strings Complex dimensions of a fractal string, defined as the poles of an associated zeta function, are studied in detail, then used to understand the oscillations intrinsic to the corresponding fractal geometries and frequency spectra Explicit formulas are extended to apply to the geometric, spectral, and dynamical zeta functions associated with a fractal Examples of such explicit formulas include a Prime Orbit Theorem with error term for self-similar flows, and a geometric tube formula The method of Diophantine approximation is used to study self-similar strings and flows Analytical and geometric methodsare used to obtain new results about the vertical distribution of zeros of number-theoretic and other zeta functions Throughout, new results are examined and a new definition of fractality as the presence of nonreal complex dimensions with positive real parts is presented. The new final chapter discusses several new topics and results obtained since the publication of the first edition. The significant studies and problems illuminated in this work may be used in a classroom setting at the graduate level. The book is intended for a very diverse audience, from graduate students all the way to researchers working in a broad spectrum of areas in analysis. Written with the graduate student in mind, it is assumed that the reader has familiarity with the basics of real analysis as well as with classical harmonic analysis, including Calderón-Zygmund theory; also some knowledge of basic orthogonal polynomials theory would be convenient. The monograph  develops the main topics of classical harmonic analysis (semigroups, covering lemmas, maximal functions, Littlewood-Paley functions, spectral multipliers, fractional integrals and fractional derivatives, singular integrals) with respect to the Gaussian measure. The text provide an updated exposition, as self-contained as possible, of all the topics in Gaussian harmonic analysis that up to now are mostly scattered in research papers and sections of books; also an exhaustive bibliography for further reading.  Each chapter ends with a section of notes and further results where connections between Gaussian harmonic analysis and other connected fields, points of view and alternative techniques are given. If one looks at stan dard textbooks in different mathematical disciplines, especially those closer to what is referred to as applied mathematics, there is little trace of those developments outside of mathematical logic and model theory. But it seems fair to say that there is a widespread conviction that the principles embodied in the Zermelo - Fraenkel theory with Choice (ZFC) are a correct description of the set theoretic underpinnings of mathematics. In most textbooks of the kind referred to above, there is, of course, no discussion of these matters, and set theory is assumed informally, although more advanced principles like Choice or sometimes Replacement are often mentioned explicitly. This implicitly fixes a point of view of the mathemat ical universe which is at odds with the results in foundations. For example most mathematicians still take it for granted that the real number system is uniquely determined up to isomorphism, which is a correct point of view as long as one does not accept to look at \"unnatural\" interpretations of the membership relation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50404157358353,"sku":"CIN354022243XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128586760465,"sku":"NLS9783540222439","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/354022243X.jpg?v=1750730709"},{"product_id":"geometric-aspects-of-general-topology-book-katsuro-sakai-9784431546993","title":"Geometric Aspects of General Topology","description":"This book is designed for graduate students to acquire knowledge of dimension theory, ANR theory (theory of retracts), and related topics. These two theories are connected with various fields in geometric topology and in general topology as well. Hence, for students who wish to research subjects in general and geometric topology, understanding these theories will be valuable. Many proofs are illustrated by figures or diagrams, making it easier to understand the ideas of those proofs. Although exercises as such are not included, some results are given with only a sketch of their proofs. Completing the proofs in detail provides good exercise and training for graduate students and will be useful in graduate classes or seminars. Researchers should also find this book very helpful, because it contains many subjects that are not presented in usual textbooks, e.g., dim X × I = dim X + 1 for a metrizable space X; the difference between the small and large inductive dimensions; a hereditarily infinite-dimensional space; the ANR-ness of locally contractible countable-dimensional metrizable spaces; an infinite-dimensional space with finite cohomological dimension; a dimension raising cell-like map; and a non-AR metric linear space. The final chapter enables students to understand how deeply related the two theories are. Simplicial complexes are very useful in topology andare indispensable for studying the theories of both dimension and ANRs. There are many textbooks from which some knowledge of these subjects can be obtained, but no textbook discusses non-locally finite simplicial complexes in detail. So, when we encounter them, we have to refer to the original papers. For instance, J.H.C. Whitehead's theorem on small subdivisions is very important, but its proof cannot be found in any textbook. The homotopy type of simplicial complexes is discussed in textbooks on algebraic topology using CW complexes, but geometrical arguments using simplicial complexes are rather easy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50463791251729,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50463791448337,"sku":"NGR9784431546993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52344943673617,"sku":"NLS9784431546993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/4431546995.jpg?v=1750775085"},{"product_id":"von-karman-evolution-equations-book-igor-chueshov-9780387877112","title":"Von Karman Evolution Equations","description":"In the study of mathematical models that arise in the context of concrete - plications, the following two questions are of fundamental importance: (i) we- posedness of the model, including existence and uniqueness of solutions; and (ii) qualitative properties of solutions. A positive answer to the ?rst question, - ing of prime interest on purely mathematical grounds, also provides an important test of the viability of the model as a description of a given physical phenomenon. An answer or insight to the second question provides a wealth of information about the model, hence about the process it describes. Of particular interest are questions related to long-time behavior of solutions. Such an evolution property cannot be v- i?ed empirically, thus any in a-priori information about the long-time asymptotics can be used in predicting an ultimate long-time response and dynamical behavior of solutions. Unitals play an important role in ?nite geometry as well as in related areas of mathematics. For example, unitals play a parallel role to Baer s- planes when considering extreme values for the size of a blocking set in a square order projective plane (see Section 2.3). Moreover, unitals meet the upper bound for the number of absolute points of any polarity in a square order projective plane (see Section 1.5). From an applications point of view, the linear codes arising from unitals have excellent technical properties (see 2 Section 6.4). The automorphism group of the classical unitalH =H(2,q ) is 2-transitive on the points ofH, and so unitals are of interest in group theory. As with every successful language it quickly expanded its coverage and semantics, and its contemporary applications are many and diverse. This modern approach to homological algebra, by two leading writers in the field, is based on the systematic use of the language and ideas of derived categories and derived functors. Relations with standard cohomology theory (sheaf cohomology, spectral sequences, etc.) are described. In most cases complete proofs are given. Basic concepts and results of homotopical algebra are also presented. The book addresses people who want to learn a modern approach to homological algebra and to use it in their work. It sets out to provide the reader with the basic knowledge of elliptic modular forms necessary to understand the recent developments in number theory. The first part gives the general theory of modular groups, modular forms and Hecke operators, with emphasis on the Hecke-Weil theory of the relation between modular forms and Dirichlet series. The second part is on the unit groups of quaternion algebras, which are seldom dealt with in books. The so-called Eichler-Selberg trace formula of Hecke operators follows next and the explicit computable formula is given. In the last chapter, written for the English edition, Eisenstein series with parameter are discussed following the recent work of Shimura: Eisenstein series are likely to play a very important role in the future progress of number theory, and thischapter provides a good introduction to the topic.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51062579626257,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51062582935825,"sku":"NIN9783540295921","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139341644049,"sku":"NLS9783540295921","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B002DONKCG.jpg?v=1750807202"},{"product_id":"complex-semisimple-lie-algebras-book-jean-pierre-serre-9783540678274","title":"Complex Semisimple Lie Algebras","description":"These notes are a record of a course given in Algiers from 10th to 21st May, 1965. Their contents are as follows. The first two chapters are a summary, without proofs, of the general properties of nilpotent, solvable, and semisimple Lie algebras. These are well-known results, for which the reader can refer to, for example, Chapter I of Bourbaki or my Harvard notes. The theory of complex semisimple algebras occupies Chapters III and IV. The proofs of the main theorems are essentially complete; however, I have also found it useful to mention some complementary results without proof. These are indicated by an asterisk, and the proofs can be found in Bourbaki, Groupes et Algebres de Lie, Paris, Hermann, 1960-1975, Chapters IV-VIII. A final chapter shows, without proof, how to pass from Lie algebras to Lie groups (complex-and also compact). It is just an introduction, aimed at guiding the reader towards the topology of Lie groups and the theory of algebraic groups. I am happy to thank MM. Pierre Gigord and Daniel Lehmann, who wrote up a first draft of these notes, and also Mlle. Franl(oise Pecha who was responsible for the typing of the manuscript.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51062592766225,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51062595649809,"sku":"NIN9783540678274","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52455356498193,"sku":"NLS9783540678274","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53499587133713,"sku":"CIN3540678271G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540678271.jpg?v=1753787307"},{"product_id":"mittag-leffler-functions-related-topics-and-applications-book-rudolf-gorenflo-9783662615492","title":"Mittag-Leffler Functions, Related Topics and Applications","description":"The 2nd edition of this book is essentially an extended version of the 1st and provides a very sound overview of the most important special functions of Fractional Calculus. Historically, this book is the first to give a complete construction of a triangulated category of mixed motives with rational coefficients satisfying the full Grothendieck six functors formalism as well as fulfilling Beilinson’s program, in particular the interpretation of rational higher Chow groups as extension groups. Apart from Voevodsky’s entire work and Grothendieck’s SGA4, our main sources are Gabber’s work on étale cohomology and Ayoub’s solution to Voevodsky’s cross functors theory. We also thoroughly develop the theory of motivic complexes with integral coefficients over general bases, along the lines of Suslin and Voevodsky. Besides this achievement, this volume provides a complete toolkit for the study of systems of coefficients satisfying Grothendieck’ six functors formalism, including Grothendieck-Verdier duality. It gives a systematic account of cohomological descent theory with an emphasis on h-descent. It formalizes morphisms of coefficient systems with a view towards realization functors and comparison results. The latter allows to understand the polymorphic nature of rational mixed motives. They can be characterized by one of the following properties: existence of transfers, universality of rational algebraic K-theory, h-descent, étale descent, orientation theory. This monograph is a longstanding research work of the two authors. The first three parts are written in a self-contained manner and could be accessible to graduate students with a background in algebraic geometry and homotopy theory. It is designed to be a reference work and could also be useful outside motivic homotopy theory. The last part, containing the most innovative results, assumes some knowledge of motivic homotopy theory, although precise statements and references are given.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51063763075345,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51063765631249,"sku":"NIN9783030332419","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143842459921,"sku":"NLS9783030332419","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030332411.jpg?v=1751158700"},{"product_id":"structure-and-regularity-of-group-actions-on-one-manifolds-book-sang-hyun-kim-9783030890056","title":"Structure and Regularity of Group Actions on One-Manifolds","description":"This book presents the theory of optimal and critical regularities of groups of diffeomorphisms, from the classical work of Denjoy and Herman, up through recent advances. Topics covered include the simplicity of homeomorphism groups, differentiability of continuous Lie group actions, smooth conjugation of diffeomorphism groups, and the reconstruction of spaces from group actions. Various classical and modern tools are developed for controlling the dynamics of general finitely generated group actions on one-dimensional manifolds, subject to regularity bounds, including material on Thompson's group F, nilpotent groups, right-angled Artin groups, chain groups, finitely generated groups with prescribed critical regularities, and applications to foliation theory and the study of mapping class groups. It includes classical theorems on nilpotent groups and solvable groups, a fundamental study of the growth of groups, a detailed look at asymptotic cones, and a discussion of related subjects including filters and ultrafilters, dimension theory, hyperbolic geometry, amenability, the Burnside problem, and random walks on groups. The results are unified under the common theme of Gromov’s theorem, namely that finitely generated groups of polynomial growth are virtually nilpotent. This beautiful result gave birth to a fascinating new area of research which is still active today. The purpose of the book is to collect these naturally related results together in one place, most of which are scattered throughout the literature, some of them appearing here in book form for the first time. In this way, the connections between these topics are revealed, providing a pleasant introduction to geometric group theory based on ideas surrounding Gromov's theorem. I will briefly outline the background of the book, thus placing it in a systematic and historical context and tradition. Roughly speaking, a random dynamical system is a combination of a measure-preserving dynamical system in the sense of ergodic theory, (D,F,lP', (B(t))tE'lf), 'II'= JR+, IR, z+, Z, with a smooth (or topological) dy namical system, typically generated by a differential or difference equation :i: = f(x) or Xn+l = tp(x.,), to a random differential equation :i: = f(B(t)w,x) or random difference equation Xn+l = tp(B(n)w, Xn)· Both components have been very well investigated separately. However, a symbiosis of them leads to a new research program which has only partly been carried out. As we will see, it also leads to new problems which do not emerge if one only looks at ergodic theory and smooth or topological dynam ics separately. From a dynamical systems point of view this book just deals with those dynamical systems that have a measure-preserving dynamical system as a factor (or, the other way around, are extensions of such a factor). As there is an invariant measure on the factor, ergodic theory is always involved.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51064568283409,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064571724049,"sku":"NIN9783540637585","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52346796572945,"sku":"NLS9783540637585","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540637583.jpg?v=1751096386"},{"product_id":"representation-theory-of-solvable-lie-groups-and-related-topics-book-ali-baklouti-9783030820435","title":"Representation Theory of Solvable Lie Groups and Related Topics","description":"The purpose of the book is to discuss the latest advances in the theory of unitary representations and harmonic analysis for solvable Lie groups. The original text was based on a set of lectures, given at the College de France in 1957-1958, and written up by Pierre Gabriel. Its aim was to give a short account of Commutative Algebra, with emphasis on the following topics: a) Modules (as opposed to Rings, which were thought to be the only subject of Commutative Algebra, before the emergence of sheaf theory in the 1950s); b) H omological methods, a la Cartan-Eilenberg; c) Intersection multiplicities, viewed as Euler-Poincare characteristics. The English translation, done with great care by Chee Whye Chin, differs from the original in the following aspects: - The terminology has been brought up to date (e.g. \"cohomological dimension\" has been replaced by the now customary \"depth\"). I have rewritten a few proofs and clarified (or so I hope) a few more. - A section on graded algebras has been added (App. III to Chap. IV). - New references have been given, especially to other books on Commu- tive Algebra: Bourbaki (whose Chap. X has now appeared, after a 40-year wait) , Eisenbud, Matsumura, Roberts, .... I hope that these changes will make the text easier to read, without changing its informal \"Lecture Notes\" character.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51065102500113,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51065104302353,"sku":"NIN9783540666417","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52455493697809,"sku":"NLS9783540666417","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540666419.jpg?v=1751221363"},{"product_id":"development-of-prime-number-theory-book-wladyslaw-narkiewicz-9783540662891","title":"The Development of Prime Number Theory","description":"1. People were already interested in prime numbers in ancient times, and the first result concerning the distribution of primes appears in Euclid's Elemen ta, where we find a proof of their infinitude, now regarded as canonical. One feels that Euclid's argument has its place in The Book, often quoted by the late Paul ErdOs, where the ultimate forms of mathematical arguments are preserved. Proofs of most other results on prime number distribution seem to be still far away from their optimal form and the aim of this book is to present the development of methods with which such problems were attacked in the course of time. This is not a historical book since we refrain from giving biographical details of the people who have played a role in this development and we do not discuss the questions concerning why each particular person became in terested in primes, because, usually, exact answers to them are impossible to obtain. Our idea is to present the development of the theory of the distribu tion of prime numbers in the period starting in antiquity and concluding at the end of the first decade of the 20th century. We shall also present some later developments, mostly in short comments, although the reader will find certain exceptions to that rule. The period of the last 80 years was full of new ideas (we mention only the applications of trigonometrical sums or the advent of various sieve methods) and certainly demands a separate book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51157213905169,"sku":"NGR9783540662891","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52483949854993,"sku":"NLS9783540662891","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540662898.jpg?v=1750870555"},{"product_id":"foundations-of-incidence-geometry-book-johannes-ueberberg-9783642209710","title":"Foundations of Incidence Geometry","description":"Incidence geometry is a central part of modern mathematics that has an impressive tradition. These hypotheses posit cardinals that prescribe their own transcendence over smaller cardinals and provide a sup- structure for the analysis of strong propositions. As such they are the rightful heirs to the two main legacies of Georg Cantor, founder of set theory: the extension of number into the in?nite and the investigation of de?nable sets of reals. The investigation of large cardinal hypotheses is indeed a mainstream of modern set theory, and they have been found to play a crucial role in the study of de?nable sets of reals, in particular their Lebesgue measurability. Although formulated at various stages in the development of set theory and with different incentives, the hypotheses were found to form a linear hierarchy reaching up to an inconsistent extension of motivating concepts. All known set-theoretic propositions have been gauged in this hierarchy in terms of consistency strength, and the emerging str- ture of implications provides a remarkably rich, detailed and coherent picture of the strongest propositions of mathematics as embedded in set theory. The ?rst of a projected multi-volume series, this text provides a comp- hensive account of the theory of large cardinals from its beginnings through the developments of the early 1970’s and several of the direct outgrowths leading to the frontiers of current research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51430285574417,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51430285672721,"sku":"GOR006796858","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52616767308049,"sku":"NLS9783540888666","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52779310842129,"sku":"NIN9783540888666","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540888667.jpg?v=1751284894"},{"product_id":"finite-model-theory-book-heinz-dieter-ebbinghaus-9783540287872","title":"Finite Model Theory","description":"Finite model theory, the model theory of finite structures, has roots in clas- sical model theory; however, its systematic development was strongly influ- enced by research and questions of complexity theory and of database theory. Model theory or the theory of models, as it was first named by Tarski in 1954, may be considered as the part of the semantics of formalized languages that is concerned with the interplay between the syntactic structure of an axiom system on the one hand and (algebraic, settheoretic, . . . ) properties of its models on the other hand. As it turned out, first-order language (we mostly speak of first-order logic) became the most prominent language in this respect, the reason being that it obeys some fundamental principles such as the compactness theorem and the completeness theorem. These principles are valuable modeltheoretic tools and, at the same time, reflect the expressive weakness of first-order logic. This weakness is the breeding ground for the freedom which modeltheoretic methods rest upon. By compactness, any first-order axiom system either has only finite models of limited cardinality or has infinite models. The first case is trivial because finitely many finite structures can explicitly be described by a first-order sentence. As model theory usually considers all models of an axiom system, modeltheorists were thus led to the second case, that is, to infinite structures. In fact, classical model theory of first-order logic and its generalizations to stronger languages live in the realm of the infinite.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51457681293585,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51457681588497,"sku":"GOR014287606","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52434641944849,"sku":"NLS9783540287872","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B01DWUB8NW.jpg?v=1753786519"},{"product_id":"domination-in-graphs-core-concepts-book-teresa-w-haynes-9783031094989","title":"Domination in Graphs: Core Concepts","description":"This monograph is designed to be an in-depth introduction to domination in graphs. It contains major results on these foundational domination numbers, including a wide variety of in-depth proofs of selected results providing the reader with a toolbox of proof techniques used in domination theory. Additionally, the book is intended as an invaluable reference resource for a variety of readerships, namely, established researchers in the field of domination who want an updated, comprehensive coverage of domination theory; next, researchers in graph theory who wish to become acquainted with newer topics in domination, along with major developments in the field and some of the proof techniques used; and, graduate students with interests in graph theory, who might find the theory and many real-world applications of domination of interest for masters and doctoral thesis topics. The focusedcoverage also provides a good basis for seminars in domination theory or domination algorithms and complexity. The authors set out to provide the community with an updated and comprehensive treatment on the major topics in domination in graphs. And by Jove, they’ve done it! In recent years, the authors have curated and published two contributed volumes: Topics in Domination in Graphs, © 2020 and Structures of Domination in Graphs, © 2021. Given such a classical group G, the three fundamental problems considered are the following: to list a representative for each conjugacy class of G; to describe the centralizer of each representative, by giving its group structure and a generating set; and to solve the conjugacy problem in G—namely, given two elements of G, establish whether they are conjugate, and if so, find a conjugating element. The book presents comprehensive theoretical solutions to all three problems, and uses these solutions to formulate practical algorithms. These properties include existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions in bounded as well as unbounded domains. Whenever the domain is unbounded, the asymptotic behavior of solutions is also investigated. This book is the new edition of the original two volume book, under the same title, published in 1994. In this new edition, the two volumes have merged into one and two more chapters on steady generalized oseen flow in exterior domains and steady Navier-Stokes flow in three-dimensional exterior domains have been added. Most of the proofs given in the previous edition were also updated. An introductory first chapter describes all relevant questions treated in the book and lists and motivates a number of significant and still open questions. It is written in an expository style so as to be accessible also to non-specialists.Each chapter is preceded by a substantial, preliminary discussion of the problems treated, along with their motivation and the strategy used to solve them. Also, each chapter ends with a section dedicated to alternative approaches and procedures, as well as historical notes. The book contains more than 400 stimulating exercises, at different levels of difficulty, that will help the junior researcher and the graduate student to gradually become accustomed with the subject. Finally, the book is endowed with a vast bibliography that includes more than 500 items. Each item brings a reference to the section of the book where it is cited. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematics in particular mathematical fluid mechanics and differential equations. Review of First Edition, First Volume: The emphasis of this book is on an introduction to the mathematical theory of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations. It is written in the style of a textbook and is essentially self-contained. The problems are presented clearly and in an accessible manner.
