But it is a most interesting story which deserves to be known also to historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science and indeed to the general public. This is what the present work aims at. It tells the story or rather parts of the story, of how physicists and chemists created elements heavier than uranium or searched for them in nature. And it does so with an emphasis on the frequent discovery and naming disputes concerning the synthesis of very heavy elements. Moreover, it calls attention to the criteria which scientists have adopted for what it means to have discovered a new element. In this branch of modern science it may be more appropriate to speak of creation instead of discovery. The work will be of interest to scientists as well as to scholars studying modern science from a meta-perspective.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49899974033681,"sku":"NGR9783319758121","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52141511246097,"sku":"NLS9783319758121","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319758128.jpg?v=1750773186"},{"product_id":"chaim-l-pekeris-and-the-art-of-applying-mathematics-with-weizac-19551963-book-leo-corry-9783031271243","title":"Chaim L. The text concentrates in particular on Riemann’s only work on prime numbers, including ideas – new at the time – such as analytical continuation into the complex plane and the product formula for entire functions. A detailed analysis of the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function is presented. The impact of Riemann’s ideas on regularizing infinite values in field theory is also emphasized.    This revised and enhanced new edition contains three new chapters, two on the application of Riemann’s zeta-function regularization to obtain the partition function of a Bose (Fermi) oscillator and one on the zeta-function regularization in quantum electrodynamics. It seeks to answer two questions: What kind of experience constituted premodern Islamic science? And in what ways did that experience constitute science? Answering these questions, the authors critique the trajectory of most existing histories of the period, which tend to reduce “experience” to empirical method or practice. This view reflects the emphasis that histories of modern science, especially of the Scientific Revolution, have placed on empiricism—the standard against which Islamic actors were then measured. This book offers a new historiography, arguing that experience had a far wider scope in the world of Islamic science. Combining an innovative theoretical framework with three case studies and a reflective epilogue by renowned experts in the field, this work offers the history of science a solid foundation on which to build its analyses of premodern science and the modality, scope, and role of experience therein. As a result, it speaks to specialists in the history of premodern Islamic science and historians of science in general to reconsider their historiographical assumptions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51680423641361,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51680423903505,"sku":"NIN9783031760846","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51717833621777,"sku":"NGR9783031760846","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031760840.jpg?v=1754489777"},{"product_id":"day-laborers-of-science-technical-work-at-the-astronomical-observatory-of-chile-book-carlos-sanhueza-cerda-9783031843495","title":"The Day Laborers of Science. Drawing upon David Edgerton's critique of the bias towards academic scientists in historical narratives, this research delves into the roles of other scientists, technicians, collaborators, and other support staff in shaping scientific endeavors. The book analyzes archival documents and reveals the essential yet often unacknowledged labor involved in routine scientific tasks. By challenging the hierarchical structure of observatory organizations and spotlighting the significance of routine work, the book redefines the production of scientific knowledge beyond the conventional focus on eminent scientists. Emphasizing the importance of failures, conflicts, and controversies, this book unveils the hidden narratives of everyday scientific labor, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the history of astronomy in Chile.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51680575160593,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51680575422737,"sku":"NIN9783031843495","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52660649558289,"sku":"NLS9783031843495","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031843495.jpg?v=1751382860"},{"product_id":"explorations-and-false-trails-book-jens-hyrup-9783031481574","title":"Explorations and False Trails","description":"This book provides a unique perspective on the history of European algebra up to the advent of Viète and Descartes. The standard version of this history is written on the basis of a narrow and misleading source basis: the Latin translations of al-Khwārizmī, Fibonacci's Liber abbaci, Luca Pacioli's Summa, Cardano's Ars magna—with neither Fibonacci nor Pacioli being read in detail. The existence of the Italian abacus and German cossic algebra is at most taken note of but they are not read, leading to the idea that Viète's and Descartes' use of genuine symbolism (not only abbreviations), many unknowns, and abstract coefficients seem to be miraculous leaps. This book traces the meandering development of all these techniques along with the mostly ignored but very important parenthesis function, by means of detailed readings of all pertinent sources, including the abacus and cossic algebra and French algebra from Chuquet to Gosselin. It argues for a necessary distinction between abbreviating glyphs and genuine symbols serving within a symbolic syntax, which allows it to trace the emergence of symbolic calculation. Characterization of the mathematical practice of the environment within which Viète and Descartes moved allows for an explanation of how these two figures did not even need to invent abstract coefficients but rather received them as a gift.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51717929763089,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51717930156305,"sku":"NGR9783031481574","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031481577.jpg?v=1750966762"},{"product_id":"establishing-quantum-physics-in-berlin-book-hubert-goenner-9783030631215","title":"Establishing Quantum Physics in Berlin","description":"This book explores Albert Einstein’s move to Berlin and the establishment of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics under his directorship. Einstein’s call to Berlin was supported by a group of prominent physicists, including Fritz Haber, Walter Nernst, Max Planck, Heinrich Rubens, Emil Warburg, and the young astronomer Erwin Freundlich, in the expectation that Einstein and the institute would take the lead in advancing quantum physics in its early phase. Examining both the abortive attempt and the successful opening of the institute in 1917, it also discusses in detail the institute’s activities up to 1922, when Einstein relinquished the directorship, as well as his reasons for stepping down. The final chapter evaluates the institute’s activities and its role in the advancement of physics. In the end, the institute only partially fulfilled the expectations of its promoters because of the waning interest in quantum physics on the part of its director and board, and also because of Einstein’s refusal to exert scientific leadership. The book is part of a series of publications in the SpringerBriefs series on the early network of quantum physics. The other books in the four-volume collection address the beginnings of quantum physics research at Göttingen, Copenhagen, and Munich. These works emerged from an expansive study on the quantum revolution as a major transformation of physical knowledge undertaken by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Fritz Haber Institute (2006–2012).For more on this project, see the dedicated Feature Story, The Networks of Early Quantum Theory, at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, https:\/\/www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de\/feature-story\/networks-early-quantum-theory","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089480937745,"sku":"NLS9783030631215","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030631215.jpg?v=1756907377"},{"product_id":"knowledge-literacy-and-elementary-education-in-the-old-babylonian-period-book-robert-middeke-conlin-9783031452253","title":"Knowledge, Literacy, and Elementary Education in the Old Babylonian Period","description":"This book examines education as a means to explore knowledge and literacy in the Old Babylonian period. It outlines how a science specialty evolved from an ambiguous and amorphous field into a fully-fledged academic discipline in the socio-institutional contexts of contemporary China. The book relates how, while initially consisting of cell biologists, the Chinese biophysics community redirected their disciplinary priorities toward rocket science in the late 1950s to accommodate the national interests of the time. Biophysicists who had worked on biological sounding rockets were drawn to the military sector and continued to contribute to human spaceflight in post-Mao China. Besides the rocket-and-space missions which provided the material context for biophysics to expand in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Chinese biophysicists also created research and educational programs surrounding biophysics by exploiting the institutional opportunities afforded by the policy emphasis on science's role to drive modernization. The book explores and demonstrates the collective achievements and struggles of Chinese biophysicists in building their scientific discipline.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52126992269585,"sku":"NLS9783319180922","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319180922.jpg?v=1757481804"},{"product_id":"machines-of-sex-research-book-donna-j-drucker-9789400770638","title":"The Machines of Sex Research","description":"The Machines of Sex Research describes how researchers worldwide integrated technology into studies of human sexuality in the postwar era. The machines they invented made new ways of seeing bodies possible. Some researchers who studied men used machines like penile strain gauges to police deviant male sexuality; others used less painful devices like penis-cameras to study women's sexual responses and map the physiology of their arousal and orgasm. While researchers used the findings from their technological innovations to propose their own views of how people should view their bodies and should manage their sexual lives, their readers interpreted their findings to enact their own visions of sexuality. Drucker shows how the use of machines in sex research provided some of the intellectual underpinnings of the sexual revolution and the women's and gay rights movements, and in turn how the sex research community developed new machines for investigations that would enhance sexual happiness rather than constrict it. The Machines of Sex Research is a key read for those interested in the intersections between human sexuality, technology, and twentieth-century social movements. Describes the little-known history of the machines of human sex research in the postwar era Shows how researchers worldwide invented and used machines to study human sexuality and the body in new ways, and how they used and improved each other's designs Relates the relationship between the machines of sex research to Cold War sexualities and gender and sexual liberation movements.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139523408145,"sku":"NLS9789400770638","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789400770638.jpg?v=1757569480"},{"product_id":"mary-somerville-and-the-world-of-science-book-allan-chapman-9783319093987","title":"Mary Somerville and the World of Science","description":"Mary Somerville (1780-1872), after whom Somerville College Oxford was named, was the first woman scientist to win an international reputation entirely in her own right, rather than through association with a scientific brother or father. Only seven Galactic supernovae visible to the naked eye are documented, with the 1604 event, the last in history, profoundly impacting astronomy, cosmology, and culture in general.  The 1604 supernova challenged the prevailing belief in the unchanging nature of stars. Astronomers like Galileo and Kepler, alongside counterparts from Arab, Chinese, and Korean backgrounds, collaborated to explain its origin, analyzing astronomical and astrological signals five years before the invention of the telescope. Galileo, approached for interpretation while teaching in Padua, cautiously expressed his views in three unpublished lectures, a pseudonymous treatise written in Paduan dialect, and a poem immediately withdrawn, sparking a dispute with Aristotelian scholars in Italy. The 1604 supernova, a pivotal historical event, spurred collaborative efforts and debates, reshaping perceptions of the cosmos. This debate dominated science from 1604 to 1606, preceding Kepler's treatise {\\em De Stella Nova}. Remnants of the explosion of the supernova, called today Kepler’s supernova, are still visible and are the subject of studies by modern observatories and discussions in the astrophysical community.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52152390123793,"sku":"NGR9783031594854","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031594854.jpg?v=1757616486"},{"product_id":"how-to-make-a-database-in-historical-studies-book-tiago-gil-9783030782405","title":"How to Make a Database in Historical Studies","description":"This book is a greatly supplemented translation from Portuguese, originally published in 2015. It discusses the most appropriate ways to create databases for research on history and other humanities, including an extensive debate about the usages that historians have made of computing since the 1950s. It has four chapters: the first is dedicated to theoretical and methodical questions about the usage of databases in history; the second is about technical issues; the third presents the concept of research engineering (how to improve research in groups); the last is about the construction of databases. The author states that the use of technology in research in history and humanities should be preceded and mediated by theories and methods which deal with these disciplines and not by technical issues. The historian must know how to think “correctly” in order to use the technological tools in an autonomous way. Quantum mechanics exploded on to the intellectual scene between 1925 and 1927, with more than 200 publications across the world, the majority of them authored by young scientists under the age of 30, graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. The resulting theory was a collective product that no single authority could claim, but it had a major geographical nod – the Copenhagen Institute of Theoretical Physics – where most of the informal, pre-published exchange of ideas occurred and where every participant of the new community aspired to visit. A rare combination of circumstances and resources – political, diplomatic, financial, and intellectual – allowed Niels Bohr to establish this “Mecca” of quantum theory outside of traditional and more powerful centres of science. Transitory international postdoctoral fellows, rather than established professors, developed a culture of research that became the source of major innovations in the field. Temporary assistantships, postdoctoral positions, and their equivalents were the chief mode of existence for young academics during the period of economic crisis and post-WWI international tensions. Insecure career trajectories and unpredictable moves through non-stable temporary positions contributed to their general outlook and interpretations of the emerging theory of quantum mechanics.    This book is part of a four-volume collection addressing the beginnings of quantum physics research at the major European centres of Göttingen, Copenhagen, Berlin, and Munich; these works emerged from an expansive study on the quantum revolution as a major transformation of physical knowledge undertaken by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Fritz HaberInstitute (2006–2012). For more on this project, see the dedicated Feature Story, The Networks of Early Quantum Theory, at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, https:\/\/www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de\/feature-story\/networks-early-quantum-theory","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52335543320849,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52335543910673,"sku":"NLS9783030591878","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030591878.jpg?v=1758160354"},{"product_id":"establishing-quantum-physics-in-munich-book-michael-eckert-9783030620332","title":"Establishing Quantum Physics in Munich","description":"1 Introduction 2 Boltzmann's Legacy3 Munich Beginnings4 X-rays and Quanta, 1911-1913 5 Extending Bohr's Model, 1914-1919 6 Synergy and Competition in the Quantum Network, 1919-1925 .7 Wave Mechanics-A Pet Subject of the Sommerfeld School, 1926-1928 8 Appendix References","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52336339321105,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52336339845393,"sku":"NLS9783030620332","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030620332.jpg?v=1758163009"},{"product_id":"bumpy-road-book-massimiliano-badino-9783319200309","title":"The Bumpy Road","description":"This book examines the different areas of knowledge, traditions, and conceptual resources that contributed to the building of Max Planck’s theory of radiation. It presents an insightful comparative analysis that not only sheds light upon a fundamental chapter in the history of modern physics, but also enlarges our understanding of how theoreticians work.  Coverage offers a deep investigation into the technical aspects behind the theory and extends in time the notion of quantum revolution. It also presents a full-fledged discussion of the combinatorial part of Planck’s theory and places emphasis on the epistemological role of mathematical practices. By painstakingly reconstructing both the electromagnetic and the combinatorial part of Planck’s black-body theory, the author shows how some apparently merely technical resources, such as the Fourier series, effectively contributed to shape the final form of Planck’s theory.    For decades, historians have debated the conditions of possibility of Max Planck’s discovery as a paradigmatic example of scientific revolution. In particular, the use of combinatorics, which eventually paved the way for the introduction of the quantum hypothesis, has remained a puzzle for experts. This book presents a fresh perspective on this important debate that will appeal to historians and philosophers of science.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52401300078865,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52401300603153,"sku":"NLS9783319200309","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319200309.jpg?v=1758754215"},{"product_id":"czech-women-philosophers-and-scientists-book-jan-zouhar-9783030615154","title":"Czech Women Philosophers and Scientists","description":"This book examines the most important Czech women philosophers and scientists. It highlights the lives and achievements of a group that has often not received the recognition they deserve. Chapters provide a systematic description and critical evaluation of the impact these women had on the history of philosophy and science.    After an opening chapter on the status of women philosophers and scientists in the period before 1820, the book explores the role women played in the 19th century rise of Czech culture (Czech National Revival). The following chapter then introduces the situation of Czech women philosophers and scientists in the 20th century. The authors base the material on analysis of key works and the characteristics of contemporary debates in which these women participated.    The volume describes the complex conditions of women in Czech history in relation to the position of learned women in other European countries. The authors also emphasize their link tothe historical background. This encompassing coverage helps provide readers with a richer understanding of these important women and the period in which they lived. Academicians and the general public alike will also learn about the political and social limitations these women faced and the influence of historical conditions on their work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52401411391761,"sku":"NLS9783030615154","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030615154.jpg?v=1758754588"},{"product_id":"distributivity-like-results-in-the-medieval-traditions-of-euclid-s-elements-book-leo-corry-9783030796785","title":"Distributivity-like Results in the Medieval Traditions of Euclid's Elements","description":"This book provides a fresh view on an important and largely overlooked aspect of the Euclidean traditions in the medieval mathematical texts, particularly concerning the interrelations between geometry and arithmetic, and the rise  of algebraic modes of thought. What is lacking, however, is a systematic investigation of the consequences of his suggestion that the medium always acts as the direct instrument of locomotion, be it natural or forced, while original movers (e.g. stone throwers, catapults, bowstrings) act indirectly by impressing moving force into the medium. Filling this gap and guided by discussions in Aristotle’s Physics and On the Heavens, the present volume shows that Aristotle’s active medium enables his theory - in which force is proportional to speed - to account for a large class of phenomena that Newtonian dynamics - in which force is proportional to acceleration - accounts for through the concept of inertia. By applying Aristotle’s medium dynamics to projectile flight and to collisions that involve reversal of motion, the book provides detailed examples of the efficacy and coherence that the active medium gives to Aristotle’s discussions. The book is directed primarily to historians of ancient, medieval, and early modern science, to philosophers of science and to students of Aristotle’s natural philosophy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52434776129809,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52434776949009,"sku":"NLS9783319212623","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319212623.jpg?v=1759181592"},{"product_id":"from-dissent-to-diplomacy-the-pugwash-project-during-the-1960s-cold-war-book-alison-kraft-9783031121340","title":"From Dissent to Diplomacy: The Pugwash Project During the 1960s Cold War","description":"This book provides new and critical perspectives on the internal development of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (the PCSWA; Pugwash) and its role in international nuclear diplomacy during the 1960s Cold War.  Conceived by western scientists dissenting from their own government’s position on nuclear weapons, the conferences brought together elite scientists from across the East-West divide to work towards nuclear disarmament and for peace. The analysis follows two lines. First, the book charts the emergence during the conferences of a distinctive form of technopolitical communication that was crucial to the role of Pugwash in Informal cross-bloc dialogue about disarmament. This enabled Pugwash to realize its paradoxical vision of working both with and against governments to promote disarmament and was key to its role as both a forum for and actor within the realm of informal diplomacy. It is argued that Pugwash scientists formed the vanguard of what came in the1960s to be called Track II diplomacy. The relevance of the contemporary concept of Science Diplomacy for Pugwash is discussed. The second analytical focus of the book centers on the internal dynamics of the international Pugwash organization. It is argued that informal modes of working and a code of confidentiality accorded the leadership enormous power and autonomy: this small network of senior figures was able to control the Pugwash agenda and priorities, and to launch diplomatic initiatives beyond the conferences. However, by 1967, competing interests were fueling tensions and instability within Pugwash as it struggled for coherence and direction amid with the political challenges posed by the Vietnam War and European security. This crisis manifest the limits of the Pugwash project and placed its future in doubt.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52452321853713,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52452322312465,"sku":"NLS9783031121340","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031121340.jpg?v=1759364368"},{"product_id":"rising-time-schemes-in-babylonian-astronomy-book-john-m-steele-9783319552200","title":"Rising Time Schemes in Babylonian Astronomy","description":"This revealing work examines an approach from ancient astronomy to what was then a particularly important question, namely that of understanding the relationship between the position in the ecliptic and the time it takes for a fixed-length of the ecliptic beginning at that point to rise above the eastern horizon.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52473945489681,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52473946603793,"sku":"NLS9783319552200","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319552200.jpg?v=1759840661"},{"product_id":"history-of-research-on-chemical-periodic-processes-book-alexander-pechenkin-9783319951072","title":"The History of Research on Chemical Periodic Processes","description":"This book offers a survey of the historic development of selected areas of chemistry and chemical physics, discussing in detail the European, American and Russian approaches to the development of chemistry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52476421505297,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52476422947089,"sku":"NLS9783319951072","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319951072.jpg?v=1759844037"},{"product_id":"building-the-general-relativity-and-gravitation-community-during-the-cold-war-book-roberto-lalli-9783319546537","title":"Building the General Relativity and Gravitation Community During the Cold War","description":"Or, was there something in the nature of the field that inspired the actors to pioneer new ways of international cooperation? Further, it discusses the essential differences between the fundamental equations of Quantum Theory derived by Born and Jordan, logically comprising Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Optics, and the traditional view of the development of Quantum Mechanics. Drawing on original publications and letters written by the main protagonists of that time, it shows that Einstein’s contributions from 1905 to 1924 laid the essential foundations for the development of Quantum Theory. Einstein introduced quantization of the radiation field; Born added quantized mechanical behavior. In addition, Born recognized that Quantum Mechanics necessarily required Quantum Optics; his radical concept of truly discontinuous and statistical quantum transitions (“quantum leaps”) was directly based on Einstein’s physical concepts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52480005406993,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52480006553873,"sku":"NLS9783319618838","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319618838.jpg?v=1759849585"},{"product_id":"roots-and-development-of-particle-physics-in-india-book-sreerup-raychaudhuri-9783030803056","title":"The Roots and Development of Particle Physics in India","description":"This book narrates the history of the initiation and development of elementary particle physics in India and by Indians, focusing on the first half of the twentieth century. By taking a thoroughly historical perspective on knowledge and integrating results from various disciplines, this work throws new light on long-standing problems in epistemology such as the relation between experience and preformed structures of cognition.    What do the orientation of apes and the theory of relativity have to do with each other? Readers will learn how different forms of spatial thinking are related in a long-term history of knowledge. Scientific concepts of space such as Newton’s absolute space or Einstein’s curved spacetime are shown to be rooted in pre-scientific structures of knowledge, while at the same time enabling the integration of an ever expanding corpus of experiential knowledge.     This work addresses all readers interested in questions of epistemology, in particular philosophers and historians of science. It is based not only on his—generally more famous—philosophical texts (e.g., De docta ignorantia, Idiota, etc.), but also, and more significantly, on the strictly speaking mathematical texts drafted between 1445 and 1459, where Cusanus attempts to provide a solution to the vexata quaestio of the squaring of the circle. First critically edited in 2010—and translated into Italian by the author in 2020—Cusanus’ Scripta mathematica are here scrutinized as to their context, genesis, and content, in order to shed light, on the one hand, on the philosophical and theological motives behind Cusanus’ mathematical endeavours; and, on the other hand, on the scope and limits of Cusanus’ geometrical constructive attempts to reach “mathematical perfection”. In addition to providing a scrupulous survey of Cusanus’ sources on mathematics, this book focuses on a little explored aspect in Cusanus’ work, namely his original theory of geometrical space as men’s space, where the activity of mensurare takes place, establishing relations of continuous proportionality to the original unity. In conclusion, the author provides an extensive account on the reception of Cusanus’ mathematical texts, from their early dissemination to the reactions of several thinkers throughout history, ensuring a full and rounded overview of Cusanus’ work in geometry, mathematics, and philosophy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52531926565137,"sku":"NLS9783031973444","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031973444.jpg?v=1760658643"},{"product_id":"heisenberg-s-1925-umdeutung-paper-book-marco-giliberti-9783031969201","title":"Heisenberg's 1925 \"Umdeutung\" Paper","description":"This book presents a meticulously crafted new translation of Werner Heisenberg’s ground-breaking 1925 paper, widely regarded as the birth “certificate” of quantum mechanics. The translation remains faithful to the original terminology and is accompanied by a particularly detailed, step-by-step commentary. Great care has been taken to make the calculations as explicit as possible while keeping them concise, ensuring that every essential step is clear without unnecessary complexity. This approach allows readers to grasp the logical flow of Heisenberg’s argument while appreciating the elegance of his formulation. Beyond the paper itself, the book situates Heisenberg’s work within the broader intellectual landscape of the time, tracing the intense discussions and challenges in physics that led to the birth of quantum mechanics. It also provides insight into the subsequent contributions of Born, Jordan, and Heisenberg himself that culminated in the formulation of matrix mechanics. This book revisits Cuba's choice, after the 1959 revolution, to develop an advanced healthcare and scientific system. It also introduces new aspects of the problem development\/underdevelopment. From the start, every effort of the Cuban leadership and scientific community was driven by the primary purpose of meeting the country’s basic economic and social needs. Immediate key measures taken after the revolution included free education up to  higher levels and free health services. In only a couple of decades Third World diseases were defeated and a First World health profile was achieved. In the sciences, support and collaboration was sought and welcomed from both Soviet and western countries. Moreover, due to the backward position of the Soviet Union in genetics and molecular biology, in the early 1970s Cuban scientists were trained in these fields mainly by Italian biologists. In the following decade, initially relying on contacts with American and Finnish specialists, Cuban biologists and physicians built a large industrial biotechnology complex to produce and commercialize Cuban-made, and often invented, medicines and vaccines.  In the early 1990s the sudden collapse of the Soviet Union and the socialist market created an unprecedented challenge. Yet Cuba’s scientific system substantially resiled, despite unavoidable setbacks. This crisis was faced by confirming and reinforcing government support for biotechnology, with the result that today Cuba excels at a global level in the typical capital-intensive field of biotechnology.  While this book is especially devoted to historians of science and technology and to biotechnologists, it is of interest to the general public.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52590066925841,"sku":"NLS9783319406084","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319406084.jpg?v=1761061320"},{"product_id":"scientific-communication-across-the-iron-curtain-book-christopher-d-hollings-9783319253442","title":"Scientific Communication Across the Iron Curtain","description":"This monograph provides a concise introduction to the tangled issues of communication between Russian and Western scientists during the Cold War. It details the extent to which mid-twentieth-century researchers and practitioners were able to communicate with their counterparts on the opposite side of the Iron Curtain.    Drawing upon evidence from a range of disciplines, a decade-by-decade account is first given of the varying levels of contact that existed via private correspondence and conference attendance. Next, the book examines the exchange of publications and the availability of one side's work in the libraries of the other. It then goes on to compare general language abilities on opposite sides of the Iron Curtain, with comments on efforts in the West to learn Russian and the systematic translation of Russian work.     In the end, author Christopher Hollings argues that physical accessibility was generally good in both directions, but that Western scientists were afflicted by greater linguistic difficulties than their Soviet counterparts whose major problems were bureaucratic in nature.     This volume will be of interest to historians of Cold War science, particularly those who study communications and language issues. In addition, it will be an ideal starting pointing for anyone looking to know more about this fascinating area.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52605931487505,"sku":"NLS9783319253442","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319253442.jpg?v=1761259770"},{"product_id":"galileo-and-satellite-navigation-book-alessandro-de-angelis-9783031787980","title":"Galileo and Satellite Navigation","description":"This book explores the Galilean method for geolocation, placing it in historical and astronomical context. It bridges the techniques developed by the Greeks and medieval astronomers with later innovations like precision clocks, 20th-century wireless technology, and space-based navigation.    The primary source is the twenty-volume National Edition of the Works of Galileo (published 1890-1909 by Antonio Favaro) and the update edited by Michele Camerota and Patrizia Ruffo in 2019, which includes previously unpublished documents on Galileo's negotiations with the Spanish government for selling his longitude-determining method at sea.    This book inspired the 2024 \"International Research Day in the World,\" focused on geolocation, organized by the Italian Permanent Delegation to International Organizations in Paris. In collaboration with Museo Galileo in Florence and Sorbonne Université, the event featured the exhibition “Galileo and Satellite Navigation,” showcased at the Pierre et Marie Curie Campus in Paris (June 13-28, 2024), and later at the Italian Institutes of Culture in Prague and Amsterdam, and at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52657200627985,"sku":"NLS9783031787980","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031787980.jpg?v=1762227625"},{"product_id":"spinning-the-cosmos-book-alica-nana-citron-9783031909757","title":"Spinning the Cosmos","description":"This open access book investigates the epistemological concept of and the knowledge transfer interwoven with the moveable paper wheels found in medieval and early modern books—the so-called “volvelles.” The earliest known volvelles emerged in the mid-thirteenth century and were cut out and installed by the reader, often appearing in books dealing with astronomical subjects. The brain processes and remembers images more easily than words—the so-called “picture superiority effect”—especially if the images move, making volvelles a useful method to help students of the Quadrivium memorizing the heavenly movements, thus the composition of a device embedded within a text promises a comprehensive insight into the didactic concepts of early modern knowledge transfer. The Tractatus de Sphaera by Johannes de Sacrobosco (1195–1256), the standard university textbook for astronomy from the thirteenth until the seventeenth century, was particularly noted as containing volvelles of different kinds. The project “The Sphere,” located at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, has collected a corpus of 359 printed De sphaera editions, building a promising basis for examining different volvelles and placing the results in a cultural context. These volumes had never been analyzed in detail before, nor was there such a large corpus that could provide a quantitative database for such an investigation. The results of the book show that a book and knowledge tradition as widespread as that of the Sphaera contained more than one third of volvelles and was used in university teaching in the early modern period. For historians, this sheds light on a new aspect of movable paper instruments in university didactics and book history in the early modern period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52666959200529,"sku":"NLS9783031909757","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031909757.jpg?v=1762281354"},{"product_id":"working-toward-solutions-in-fluid-dynamics-and-astrophysics-book-lydia-patton-9783031256851","title":"Working Toward Solutions in Fluid Dynamics and Astrophysics","description":"This book focuses on continuing the long-standing productive dialogue between physical science and the philosophy of science. How did this come about and why is it that Göttingen became the pre-eminent location for a revolution in physics? This book is the first to investigate the wide range of factors that were pivotal for quantum physics to be established in Göttingen. These include the process of generational change of physics professors, the hopes of mathematicians seeking new fields of research, and a new understanding of the interplay of experiment, theory and philosophy. The other books in the four-volume collection address the beginnings of quantum physics research at Copenhagen, Berlin, and Munich. These works emerged from an expansive study on the quantum revolution as a major transformation of physical knowledge undertaken by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Fritz Haber Institute (2006–2012). It shows how the second world war and cold war fostered the development of materials, instruments, and systems that made it possible to create, manipulate, and detect single quantum systems, thus creating the material conditions for experiments in foundations of quantum mechanics and for a broad spectrum of experimental inquiries on the structure and properties of matter which underlay the creation of new research fields such as quantum optics, quantum information, and atomic, molecular, and optical physics. Discussing research and development performed in diverse contexts, this book reveals how physicists carried instruments, and the knowledge they embodied, through disciplinary and geographic frontiers to probe entanglement, a most intriguing feature of the quantum world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681942237457,"sku":"NLS9783031297960","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53010823315729,"sku":"NIN9783031297960","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031297960.jpg?v=1762316908"},{"product_id":"manuscript-dissemination-of-descartess-traite-de-lhomme-book-andrea-strazzoni-9783031723742","title":"The Manuscript Dissemination of Descartes’s Traité de l’homme","description":"This book offers the first thorough-going account of the covert manuscript dissemination of a pivotal text in the history of early modern philosophy and science, namely the Traité de l’homme by René Descartes, completed in 1633 but published in printed form only in 1662 and 1664. This account serves as both introduction to and commentary upon the following transcription of a Latin handwritten translation of the treatise (Tractatus de homine a Cartesio) recently brought to the attention of scholars, and which was integral to such dissemination. Included is an apparatus of variants with respect to its first editions. Importantly, during its first dissemination the treatise fostered the development of medical theories based on mechanical ideas and is now increasingly at the centre of the attention of historians, thanks to the renewed appreciation of Descartes as a scientist rather than as a metaphysician. By developing an investigation taking into account not only professors and scientists, but also the importance of women, courtiers, publishers, soldiers, and the covert circulation of knowledge in the early modern age, this book contributes to the knowledge of scholars, students, and anybody interested in the early modern history of philosophy, science, intellectual history, and the history of the book in a crucial phase of the development of western thought.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52717111083281,"sku":"NLS9783031723742","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031723742.jpg?v=1762904478"},{"product_id":"voyage-from-vortex-to-helicity-1517-1969-book-john-z-shi-9783032178527","title":"The Voyage from Vortex to Helicity (1517 – 1969)","description":"This book in a single contribution for the first time examines the historical development of the concepts of vortex, vorticity, knot, chirality, and helicity between 1517 and 1969. It considers their origins in early pictorial and conceptual studies, their subsequent formalization in mathematical analysis, and their eventual consolidation as interconnected elements within fluid mechanics, mathematical physics, geophysics, and astrophysics.   Attention is given to the progression from qualitative representations to formal definitions, including the emergence of vorticity, curl, and the gradient operator, as well as to the introduction of knot, chirality, and helicity as new means of describing physical and geometrical structure. The discussion emphasizes the extent to which these notions evolved in parallel, with recurring intersections between geometry, physics, and analysis.   The volume is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, dynamo theory, topology, knot theory, geophysics, astrophysics, and the history of mathematical physics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53339084390673,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53339084751121,"sku":"NGR9783032178527","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032178527.jpg?v=1774518428"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/springerbriefs-in-history-of-science-and-technology-book-series.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
