Even worse, it stands accused sometimes of making matters worse, particularly for the poorest of the poor. The policies imposed from above by international agencies and central governments have been sadly at variance with the needs and aspirations of ordinary people. The development 'industry', concerned at evidence of the damage inflicted by its well-intentioned actions, has been searching for some time past for alternative approaches. Indigenous knowledge in development is one of the new approaches being pioneered. It is emerging within the context of increasingly popular participatory approaches. It works from below at the 'grassroots'. It aims to make local voices heard more effectively. If development is to continue to involve outside mediated interventions, in the belief that foreigners have knowledge and resources that can assist in relieving the degrading poverty endured by millions, the policymakers, scientists and bureaucrats need better to appreciate the indigenous view and practices both before and while intervening locally. While the aims of indigenous knowledge research are straightforward, their achievement presents us with some of the largest current challenges in development. It is an exciting time. The work has only recently started in earnest and a great deal remains to be accomplished. If you wish to see more equitable use of resources, this book is a must for you. Indeed, it should be compulsory reading for all those working in the development field.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49522757501201,"sku":"GOR013712337","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52475077427473,"sku":"NLS9781853395185","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1853395188.jpg?v=1750802707"},{"product_id":"juremas-children-in-the-forest-of-spirits-book-clarice-novaes-da-mota-9781853394027","title":"Juremas Children in the Forest of Spirits","description":"This in-depth study examines the colonized native groups of the Kariri and the Shoko of North-eastern Brazil and it shows how a threatened minority group can effectively help to shape its future and how small groups of disenfranchized individuals can recover their ethnic identity and human dignity. This knowledge must be taken into account in the planning and implementation of development to be both acceptable and effective. Forty-six contributions from anthropologists, sociologists, geographers and agricultural scientists (among others) in academia and international organisations provide both case study material and general conceptual papers. HTAs are based on ties of kinship and ancestry, but are products of migrations and urbanization and are therefore of contemporary vintage. Associational life was, and remains, an important part of Nigerian social structure, and hometown associations have evolved into the most visible form of that associational life. Though they vary in many respects, HTAs have a few common properties, a crucial one being that they have significance both at home and abroad. At home, the focus is on improvement, though the specifics of what is to be improved and who decides is the subject of struggle. Abroad, the focus is dual - maintaining connections with home but also providing a supportive environment for people in a place where they are regarded as strangers. These studies illuminate the vitality of a fast-developing society. They include case studies of hometown associations operating across the country, as well as integrative studies comparing the HTAs across such important dimensions as gender relations, connections to formal government, and as agents of change.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52479593120017,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52479594496273,"sku":"NLS9781853394263","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781853394263.jpg?v=1779270279"},{"product_id":"indigenous-organizations-and-development-book-d-warren-9781853393211","title":"Indigenous Organizations and Development","description":"Indigenous organizations are local-level institutions with a community base, such as women's groups, ethnic associations, traditional religious groups, and a wide variety of other social groups.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52480361333009,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52480362578193,"sku":"NLS9781853393211","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781853393211.jpg?v=1759850106"},{"product_id":"hungry-for-hope-book-carmen-hess-9781853394034","title":"Hungry for Hope","description":"This book deals with indigenous people and the problems that plague agricultural production in the high mountains of Ecuador. The guidelines acknowledge that the design and management of IK-informed projects involve making decisions about many closely interrelated issues. They take cost, time and scope of objectives as the principal design issues. The methodology also deals with issues of team functioning that critically inform project success. The guidelines make reference to project cycle management in the context of natural resources indigenous knowledge research, and present options for reducing conflicts and more effectively including the views of primary stakeholders. Novel topics are covered, such as computer aided analysis of qualitative data and the use of cross-cultural research staff. The methodology is grounded in anthropological and development research, and attempts to be critically aware of contemporary reflective practice.
