Volume 2 consists of a text edition of his astronomical legacy, prepared for the printing press in the 1650s, but only now finalized and published. Georg Marggrafe (1610-1643) is today hailed as the principal author of an influential account of the natural history of Northern Brazil and as compiler of the first accurate map of the area, which is considered as one of the most elegant products of seventeenth-century Dutch cartography. But initial he had the ambition to become known in astronomy. With the support Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, then governor-general of colonial Dutch Brazil, he built in Recife the first European-style astronomical observatory on the South-American continent, where he systematically charted the southern stars. He intended to supplement the famous astronomer Tycho Brahe, who charted the Northern sky half a century before. But Marggrafe's untimely death (and the negligence of a Leiden professor) prevented the publication of his valuable observations. As a result, Marggrafe did not achieve fame in astronomy, but instead became famous for his equally remarkable other achievements.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49743923347729,"sku":"NGR9789463722186","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9463722181.jpg?v=1759509879"},{"product_id":"cultivating-and-communicating-natural-and-technical-knowledge-around-1800-book-nikolaj-bijleveld-9789463728577","title":"Cultivating and Communicating Natural and Technical Knowledge around 1800","description":"This is a book about some of the unexpected people and places involved in cultivating knowledge of the natural world and of scientific apparatus around 1800. It takes readers across continental Europe from the Enlightenment to the onset of academic professionalisation. The authors widen the horizon of inquiry by looking beyond the scientific elite of academies and prestigious science sponsored by princely courts, the focus of previous major studies of this time period. They consider people of diverse professions and occupations who advanced scientific knowledge through practical means by devoting their spare time and personal resources, thereby crossing geographic, linguistic, and societal barriers. The case studies together demonstrate that such individuals contributed substantially to the spread of new knowledge and found ways to promote technical innovations in society. The present volume is dedicated to these people: the devotees of science.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51608815108369,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51608815403281,"sku":"NGR9789463728577","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9463728570.jpg?v=1759509814"},{"product_id":"virtues-and-vices-in-the-nineteenth-century-humanities-book-herman-paul-9789048562985","title":"Virtues and Vices in the Nineteenth-Century Humanities","description":"What do scholars do when they talk about virtues (impartiality, accuracy) or vices (dogmatism, prejudice)? Against the common view that such high-minded talk is largely irrelevant to actual scholarly practice, this volume proposes to treat it as a practice in its own right. Drawing on case studies from the nineteenth-century humanities (with occasional forays into physics, chemistry, and medicine), Paul shows that notions of virtue and vice were an evaluative discourse used across the academic spectrum. Paul argues that this evaluative idiom is best studied from a rhetorical point of view, with due attention to repertoires on which scholars drew, explicit or implicit appeals to authority, multi-layered meanings of virtue and vice terms, different uses to which these concepts were put, and societal contexts that lent plausibility to scholars' invocations of virtue and vice. Based on more than a decade of research, this volume will be a key reference for scholars interested in virtues, vices, and the history of the humanities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51628674646289,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51628674908433,"sku":"NGR9789048562985","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52618623189265,"sku":"NLS9789048562985","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52763123122449,"sku":"NIN9789048562985","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9048562988.jpg?v=1751384649"},{"product_id":"anton-pannekoek-ways-of-viewing-science-and-society-book-chaokang-tai-9789462984349","title":"Anton Pannekoek: Ways of Viewing Science and Society","description":"Anton Pannekoek (1873-1960), prominent astronomer and world-renowned socialist theorist, stood at the nexus of the revolutions in politics, science and the arts of the early twentieth century. The universities and the sciences underwent a laboratory revolution that fundamentally changed the nature of both. This revolutionary development began in chemistry, where Justus Liebig is credited with systematically employing his students in his ongoing research during the 1830s. Later, this development spread to other fields, including the social sciences and the humanities. The consequences for the universities were colossal. The expansion of the laboratories demanded extensive new building programs, reshaping the outlook of the university. The social structure of the university also diversified because of this laboratory expansion, while what it meant to be a scientist changed dramatically. This volume explores the spatial, social, and cultural dimensions of the rise of the modern research laboratory within universities and their consequent reshaping.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52618607395089,"sku":"NLS9789463720434","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789463720434.jpg?v=1761533599"},{"product_id":"works-and-times-of-johan-huizinga-1872-1945-book-thor-rydin-9789463724593","title":"The Works and Times of Johan Huizinga (1872-1945)","description":"The lifetime of Johan Huizinga (1872-1945) was marked by dramatic transformations in Europe. Cityscapes, aesthetic codes, social orders, political cultures, international travel and means of warfare developed beyond recognition; entire catalogues of hopes and fears were torn asunder and replaced by new ones during not one but two wars. Amidst all these changes, Huizinga grew to become one of the most famous historians of his time. To this day, his works are treated as monuments in the cultural historical field.  This book examines how these transformations and 'experiences of loss' affected and informed Huizinga's historical perspectives. Most centrally, this book contends that Huizinga's historical works helped to accommodate and give meaning to his own experiences of uncertainty and rupture, thus offering him a way of life in turbulent times. This project offers an original and comprehensive analysis of an iconic historian writing in the age of collapse.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52618667819281,"sku":"NLS9789463724593","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789463724593.jpg?v=1761533756"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/studies-in-the-history-of-knowledge-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
