They are always connected to an underlying view of mankind. Liberalism, which currently predominates, is connected to a focus on the free individual. Marxism thinks of man in terms of class struggle, determined by economic relationships. Halfway the twentieth century a powerful alternative came about, by the name of “personalism”. This term stood for a social and political thought based on the concept of the human person. This concept stresses that a human being only becomes human in relationship with others and in a commitment to values that go beyond one’s individual interests. Although personalism has an important influence in western society, in philosophical circles it is often regarded as dead and gone. This tension brings Paul Ricoeur to the fore as an interesting interlocutor, because he was considered a representative of personalism in his younger years, while he later on also supported fatal criticisms of original personalism. This book investigates to what extent the thought of Ricoeur bears a continuing stamp of personalism that allows him to instigate a personalist perspective within contemporary political philosophy. The final result lies on three fronts. First, there is more clarity in the status of personalism in contemporary philosophy, as Ricoeur’s hermeneutical phenomenology shows that there are still viable means to elaborate the core ideas of personalism. Second, a personalist kind of republicanism is shown to provide a valuable input in the contemporary philosophical debate on citizenship. Finally, the most tangible result is a deeper understanding of the oeuvre of Ricoeur, in the sense that this book shows that personalism is an important and above all underestimated perspective to understand his entire work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49733799772433,"sku":"NGR9781498552875","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585256255761,"sku":"NLS9781498552875","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1498552870.jpg?v=1750925118"},{"product_id":"paul-ricoeur-s-hermeneutics-and-the-discourse-of-mark-13-book-peter-c-de-vries-9781498512282","title":"Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics and the Discourse of Mark 13","description":"The apocalyptic discourse of Mark 13 predicts that cataclysmic events will occur within the generation of Jesus’ contemporaries, but readers today know these events have not taken place.  Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics enables a reader to understand this text as a presentation of truth rather than as a failed prediction.  Ricoeur argues that the meaning of a text is not defined by the author’s intention nor by the reader’s reception, but by the text itself.  Therefore, although Mark 13 was originally understood literally, today’s reader is able to read it as metaphor, and to discern latent meaning that is present in the text.  As Ricoeur explains, metaphor associates previously unrelated concepts and creates new, multiple meanings.  In doing, metaphor is able to present truth, not as a verifiable presentation of the world, but as a novel manifestation of the world.  Mark 13 functions as metaphor because of a double dissonance: first between the configured world of the text and the lived world of the reader, and second between claim that Jesus is able to predict when the events will take place (v. 30) and the assertion that he is not able to do so (v. 32).  One option for the metaphorical meaning that Mark 13 offers for today’s reader is the perception of the presence of forces that challenge and subvert powers which appear to be dominant, and which deceive, destroy, and persecute.  This book will appeal to two sets of readers.  First, scholars who study New Testament apocalyptic texts and the eschatological expectations of the early church will appreciate a new approach to a challenging subject matter.  Second, Ricoeur scholars who focus upon the religious aspects of his work will enjoy the employment of his interpretive approach on a Biblical genre that has heretofore receive only cursory attention.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50386033803537,"sku":"CIN1498512283VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52531019940113,"sku":"NLS9781498512282","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1498512283.jpg?v=1751339744"},{"product_id":"companion-to-ricoeur-s-freedom-and-nature-book-scott-davidson-9781498578882","title":"A Companion to Ricoeur's Freedom and Nature","description":"Paul Ricoeur’s first book, Freedom and Nature, introduces many themes that resurface in various ways throughout his later work, but its significance has been mostly overlooked in the field of Ricoeur studies. Gathering together an international group of scholars, The Companion to Freedom and Nature is the first book-length study to focus exclusively on Freedom and Nature. It helps readers to understand this complex work by providing careful textual analysis of specific arguments in the book and by situating them in relation to Ricoeur’s early influences, including Merleau-Ponty, Nabert, and Ravaisson. But most importantly, this book demonstrates that Freedom and Nature remains a compelling and vital resource for readers today, precisely because it resonates with recent developments in the areas of embodied cognition, philosophical psychology, and philosophy of the will.  Freedom and Nature is fundamentally a book about embodiment, and it situates the human body at the crossroads of activity and passivity, motivation and causation, the voluntary and the involuntary.  This conception of the body informs Ricoeur’s unique treatment of topics such as effort, habit, and attention that are of much interest to scholars today. Together the chapters of this book provide a renewed appreciation of this important and innovative work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51504025960721,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51504026812689,"sku":"NIN9781498578882","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52532768866577,"sku":"NLS9781498578882","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1498578888.jpg?v=1750716743"},{"product_id":"companion-to-ricoeur-s-the-symbolism-of-evil-book-scott-davidson-9781498587167","title":"A Companion to Ricoeur's The Symbolism of Evil","description":"The Symbolism of Evil is the final book in Ricoeur's early trilogy on the will. While Freedom and Nature sets aside normative questions altogether and Fallible Man examines the question of what makes the bad will possible, here Ricoeur takes up the question of evil in its actuality. What is the nature of the will that has succumbed to evil? The question of evil resists reflection and remains inscrutable, leading Ricoeur to proceed indirectly through a study of the abundant resources contained in symbols and myths. Symbols, as Ricoeur famously says, give rise to thought and thereby open up a field of meanings which help to inform a philosophical reflection on evil. This hermeneutics of symbols signals an important shift in Ricoeur's philosophical trajectory, which increasingly turns to language and the various forms of discourse which harbor multiple meanings. The contributors to this volume, edited by Scott Davidson, highlight a wide range of important themes in Ricoeur's treatment of the symbolics of evil that resonate with current topics in contemporary philosophy and religion.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51504026485009,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51504027042065,"sku":"NIN9781498587167","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51822005059857,"sku":"NGR9781498587167","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404262600977,"sku":"NLS9781498587167","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/149858716X.jpg?v=1759400701"},{"product_id":"hermeneutics-of-contemplative-silence-book-michele-kueter-petersen-9781793640024","title":"A Hermeneutics of Contemplative Silence","description":"This book probes the texts of Paul Ricoeur and Edith Stein to disclose the role of silence in the creation of meaning. The chapters not only explore the specific contribution Ricoeur makes to the field of jurisprudence but also examine how Ricoeur’s work on law fits, complements, or changes his overall anthropology, phenomenology, and hermeneutics. The book provides a complex insight into how law, ethics, and politics intertwine both from within law as normative rule setting, as well as through the wider social-political and historical context in which law and legal institutions affect our inter-subjective and communal life as lived “with and for others in just institutions.” The collection also makes available in English “The Just between the Legal and the Good,” a key text in Ricoeur’s reflections about law and justice. The core topics of this collection are rights, justice, responsibility, judging, interpretation, argumentation, punishment, and authority, but contributors also offer original insights in how Ricoeur’s philosophical reconceptualization of symbolism, action, ideology, narrative, selfhood, testimony, history, trauma, reconciliation, justice, and forgiveness can be made productive for our understanding of law and legal institutions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51679133729041,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51679134318865,"sku":"NIN9781793600936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52661404565777,"sku":"NLS9781793600936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1793600937.jpg?v=1751185057"},{"product_id":"phenomenology-of-revelation-in-heidegger-marion-and-ricoeur-book-adam-j-graves-9781793640598","title":"The Phenomenology of Revelation in Heidegger, Marion, and Ricoeur","description":"The Phenomenology of Revelation in Heidegger, Marion, and Ricoeur provides a critical framework for understanding the phenomenology of revelation through a series of close readings that serve as the basis for an imagined dialogue between Martin Heidegger, Jean-Luc Marion, and Paul Ricoeur. Adam J. Graves distinguishes between two dominant approaches to revelation: a “radical” approach that seeks to disclose a pre-linguistic experience of revelation through a radicalization of the phenomenological reduction, and a “hermeneutical” one that characterizes revelation as an eruption of meaning arising from our encounter with concrete symbols, narratives, and texts. According to Graves, the radical approach is often driven by a misplaced concern for maintaining philosophical rigor and for avoiding theological biases, or “contaminations.” This preoccupation leads to a process of “counter-contamination” in which the concept of revelation is ultimately estranged from the phenomenon’s rich historical and linguistic content. While Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenology may do a better job of accommodating the concrete content of revelation, it does so at the price of having to renouncing the kind of “presuppositionlessness” generally associated with phenomenological method. Ultimately, Graves argues that a more nuanced appreciation of the complex nature of our linguistic inheritance enables us to reconceive the relationship between revelation and philosophical thought.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51679141134609,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51679141363985,"sku":"NIN9781793640598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52682823401745,"sku":"NLS9781793640598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1793640599.jpg?v=1759402507"},{"product_id":"paul-ricur-philosophical-hermeneutics-and-the-question-of-revelation-book-christina-m-gschwandtner-9781666937282","title":"Paul Ricœur, Philosophical Hermeneutics, and the Question of Revelation","description":"The topic of revelation is fundamental to any account of religious experience, playing a special role in the Judeo-Christian tradition where the texts of Scripture are regarded as revealed. Yet, any reflection on the revealed status of a given message or text requires interpretation. Paul Ricœur, one of the most important hermeneutic philosophers of the twentieth century, provides crucial insights on how such interpretation might proceed and what it might mean for texts to be revealed. Edited by Christina M. Gschwandtner, Paul Ricoeur, Philosophical Hermeneutics, and the Question of Revelation brings together major scholars of Ricœur’s work on the topic of revelation, showing both the role it already plays in his work and how his thinking might be taken further. Several contributors trace the development of his thought in regard to the concept of revelation. Others discuss the revelatory dimensions of Ricœur’s hermeneutics of the self, especially for such issues as identity, trauma, and forgiveness. Several contributions also place his work in conversation with that of other seminal thinkers on the topic of revelation, such as Karl Barth and Paul Tillich.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51688108818705,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51688110063889,"sku":"NIN9781666937282","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52594386272529,"sku":"NLS9781666937282","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1666937282.jpg?v=1751310760"},{"product_id":"refiguring-the-sacred-book-joseph-a-edelheit-9781666919097","title":"Refiguring the Sacred","description":"Refiguring the Sacred offers perspectives on Ricoeurs life-long reflections about religion. This book argues that the notions of happiness, unhappiness, and chance in the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur offer an overarching conceptualization of happiness that has significant implications for contemporary philosophical accounts of happiness. By analyzing Ricoeur’s philosophy, and specifically his two articles on happiness, “Le Bonheur Hors Lieu” (1994) and “L’optatif du bonheur” (2001), Anné H. Verhoef argues that a significant alternative mode of understanding happiness is found in the dialectical thinking of Ricoeur. Ricoeur’s dialectic of happiness and unhappiness entails that one cannot exist without the other; unhappiness is not something to be overcome, but something to be embraced. Furthermore, Ricoeur’s recognition of chance in relation to happiness opens a recognition for happiness as something received without any effort, while simultaneously preserving the Aristotelian idea that one should strive for goodness. There is a fragile dialectic of receiving and striving for happiness within the simultaneous dialectic of happiness and unhappiness.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52100904878353,"sku":"NGR9781666976373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52850245370129,"sku":"NLS9781666976373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781666976373.jpg?v=1757760374"},{"product_id":"digital-poetics-book-fernando-nascimento-9781666942231","title":"Digital Poetics","description":"Drawing on Paul Ricoeur's narrative theory and ethics, Fernando Nascimento argues for a new approach to integrating ethics into digital technology development, use, and regulation. Ricoeur brings the Joy of the Yes to the sadness of the finite, the passion for the possible to the resignation to necessity, and the vehemence of the primary affirmation to the radical negation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52102033113361,"sku":"NGR9781666950939","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52474394968337,"sku":"NLS9781666950939","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781666950939.jpg?v=1757095477"},{"product_id":"interdisciplinary-interpretation-book-kenneth-a-reynhout-9781498515870","title":"Interdisciplinary Interpretation","description":"The past fifty years has seen the emergence of an energetic dialogue between religion and the natural sciences that has contributed to a growing desire for interdisciplinarity among many constructive theologians. Interdisciplinary work appears overly abstract and methodologically restrictive, with little room for systematic theologians self-consciously operating within a particular historical tradition. In Interdisciplinary Interpretation: Paul Ricoeur and the Hermeneutics of Theology and Science, Kenneth A. Reynhout seeks to address this concern by constructing an alternative understanding of interdisciplinary theology based on the hermeneutical thought of Paul Ricoeur, generally recognized as one of the most interdisciplinary philosophers of the twentieth century. Appealing to Ricoeur's view of interpretation as the dialectical process of understanding through explanation, Reynhout argues that theology's engagement with the natural sciences is fundamentally hermeneutical in character. As such, interdisciplinary theologians can faithfully borrow meaning from the sciences through a process of interdisciplinary interpretation, a process that can honestly attend to the legitimate challenges posed by the natural sciences without automatically requiring the evacuation of theological norms and convictions. In Narrative Medicine in Hospice Care: Identity, Practice, and Ethics through the Lens of Paul Ricoeur, Flanagan contends that the models of selfhood and care found in the work of Ricoeur can offer a framework for clinicians and caregivers regardless of the verbal and cognitive capabilities of a patient at the end of life. By revisiting the key insights of Ricoeur's wider oeuvre from the perspective of interfaith dialogue, Moyaert elaborates a Ricoeurian interreligious hermeneutic. In Response to the Religious Other provides a coherent interreligious reading of Ricoeur's philosophy of religion, his hermeneutical anthropology, his ethical hermeneutics. Starting with the fact that each of us has a place in the world by reason of our mode of incarnation as flesh, the contributors to this volume address a range of diverse themes in which the lived body figures. Edited by Roger W. H. Savage, this book investigates the construction of narrative identities and the social assignment of gender and race, the passions and an ethics of respect, affect theory, feeling, the carnal imagination, and the cultural and social milieu that comprises the conditions of our embodiment as subjects who have deeply held convictions and beliefs. Individually, these essays advance new perspectives on the anthropological presuppositions behind the requirement of justice, the role played by convictions and beliefs in pluralistic contexts, and the place of a post-critical religious faith. Together, they demonstrate the value of a hermeneutical mode of reasoning in an age in which conflicts, tensions and violence abound. More precisely, it offers a sustained engagement with Ricoeur’s political thought in a way that demonstrates both the significance of the political in his own thinking throughout his career, and how Ricoeur’s understanding of the political offers something valuable to current discussions in political philosophy. A second goal is to begin to fill a gap in Ricoeur studies and situate his work on political ethics more fully in contemporary discussions about political thought. In this way, Ricoeur can be seen as a figure pertinent to recent trends in political philosophy that make political thinking more realistic to the conditions for political life. The various essays in the book move along intersecting but different trajectories. First, as some of these essays attest, the concept of the political is a pervasive theme that runs throughout Ricoeur’s corpus. In this way a theme throughout the book examines this notion of the political, as well as how it relates to his more well-known work in other areas. Second, and related, the historical understanding of perennial issues in political philosophy are most often updated by those standing in the lineage of those who have come before. As such, Ricoeur’s hermeneutical orientation has moved him to engage contemporaries who attempt to “think forward” in various ways this tradition for current situations. Unlike most who engage in political thought, Ricoeur goes where others dare not, namely, to those who appear to be opponents but, as he shows, offer perspectives worth more consideration in the name of the best of political thinking. In this light, Ricoeur’s hermeneutical orientation is again a unique framework for understanding the nature of political engagement, an orientation in what follows that highlights the ways that Ricoeur and a Ricoeurian perspective cross philosophical orientations to develop a unique understanding of political thought that is different.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52431988752657,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52431989637393,"sku":"NLS9780739167731","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780739167731.jpg?v=1759174107"},{"product_id":"companion-to-ricoeur-s-fallible-man-book-scott-davidson-9781498587112","title":"A Companion to Ricoeur's Fallible Man","description":"Fallible Man is the second book in Paul Ricoeur's early trilogy on the will and the most accessible of his early writings. Combining rigor and originality, Ricoeur locates the possibility of evil in a self that is fundamentally in conflict with itself. Michele Kueter Petersen argues that human being is language and silence. Contemplative silence manifests a mode of capable human being whereby a shared world of meaning is constituted and created. The analysis culminates with the claim that a hermeneutics of contemplative silence manifests a deeper level of awareness as a poetics of presencing a shared humanity. The term awareness refers to five crucial levels of meaning-creating consciousness that are ingredients in the practice of contemplative silence. Contemplative awareness includes self-critique as integral to the experience and the understanding of the virtuous ordering of relational realities. The practice of contemplative silence is a spiritual and ethical activity that aims at transforming reflexive consciousness. Inasmuch as it leads to openness to new motivation and intention for acting in relation to others, contemplative awareness elicits movement through the ongoing exercise of rethinking those relational realities in and for the world. The texts of Ricoeur and Stein reveal a contemplative discourse of praise and beauty for capable human beings whose actions and suffering respond to word and silence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52532256833809,"sku":"NLS9781793640000","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781793640000.jpg?v=1760660099"},{"product_id":"feminist-explorations-of-paul-ricoeur-s-philosophy-book-annemie-halsema-9781498513685","title":"Feminist Explorations of Paul Ricoeur's Philosophy","description":"This book for the first time brings together considerations upon the feminine in relation to Paul Ricoeur s thinking. It aims at showing the rich potential of his thought for feminist theory, without eschewing to critically scrutinize it and to show its limitations with respect to thinking gender differences. Fourteen renowned scholars, who have published extensively on Ricoeur, as well as young promising scholars are gathered in the volume. In the first part, Ricoeur and the Feminine, Ricoeur s work is taken as the starting point for a reflection upon the position of women, the feminine, and the capable female subject. In the second part, Discourse, Critique and Recognition, the dialogue between Ricoeur and feminist authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Nancy Fraser, and Rosemary Radford Reuther enables us to think through not only socially relevant notions such as discourse, recognition, and justice, but also feminist theological themes such as the divine. In the third part, New Directions for Feminism, Ricoeurian notions and ideas are the starting point for reflections upon new perspectives for feminist philosophy, black feminist thought and feminist theology. Here the fertility of Ricoeur s philosophy for feminism is developed to its full extent.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52544326304017,"sku":"NLS9781498513685","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781498513685.jpg?v=1760690939"},{"product_id":"reading-scripture-with-paul-ricoeur-book-joseph-a-edelheit-9781793625618","title":"Reading Scripture with Paul Ricoeur","description":"Reading Scripture with Paul Ricoeur is a unique volume in which twelve diverse contributors illuminate and analyze Paul Ricoeur's personal religious faith and intellectual passion for Scripture. The co-editors, Joseph A. Edelheit and James F Moore, each studied with Ricoeur at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago and bring the perspectives of a rabbi and of a Lutheran pastor and theologian, respectively. This book engages topics such as translation, biblical hermeneutics, and prophecy, as well as specific scriptural passages: Cain and Abel, the Epistles, and a feminist reading of Rahab. It provides both students and scholars alike a new resource of reflections using Ricoeur's scholarship to illuminate and model how Ricoeur read and taught.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52590509654289,"sku":"NLS9781793625618","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781793625618.jpg?v=1761062195"},{"product_id":"phenomenology-of-revelation-in-heidegger-marion-and-ricoeur-book-adam-j-graves-9781793640574","title":"The Phenomenology of Revelation in Heidegger, Marion, and Ricoeur","description":"The Phenomenology of Revelation in Heidegger, Marion, and Ricoeur provides a critical framework for understanding the phenomenology of revelation through a series of close readings that serve as the basis for an imagined dialogue between Martin Heidegger, Jean-Luc Marion, and Paul Ricoeur. Adam J. Graves distinguishes between two dominant approaches to revelation: a “radical” approach that seeks to disclose a pre-linguistic experience of revelation through a radicalization of the phenomenological reduction, and a “hermeneutical” one that characterizes revelation as an eruption of meaning arising from our encounter with concrete symbols, narratives, and texts. According to Graves, the radical approach is often driven by a misplaced concern for maintaining philosophical rigor and for avoiding theological biases, or “contaminations.” This preoccupation leads to a process of “counter-contamination” in which the concept of revelation is ultimately estranged from the phenomenon’s rich historical and linguistic content. While Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenology may do a better job of accommodating the concrete content of revelation, it does so at the price of having to renouncing the kind of “presuppositionlessness” generally associated with phenomenological method. Ultimately, Graves argues that a more nuanced appreciation of the complex nature of our linguistic inheritance enables us to reconceive the relationship between revelation and philosophical thought.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52597317402897,"sku":"NLS9781793640574","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781793640574.jpg?v=1761074126"},{"product_id":"reading-religious-ritual-with-ricoeur-book-christina-m-gschwandtner-9781793647177","title":"Reading Religious Ritual with Ricoeur","description":"Reading Religious Ritual with Ricoeur extends Ricoeur's philosophical treatment of religion beyond an analysis of mythic symbols and the biblical texts to religious ritual practices. Ricoeur took these concepts that continue to be enormously important in social and political analysis and connected them in a uniquely intricate dance. The ensuing interplay of these concepts provides a framework for a more deft and subtle evaluation than is common. Little has been done to engage Ricoeur's skill in interpreting ideology and utopia or their creative tension, perhaps due to his significant contributions in other areas. When one combines Ricoeur's intricate analyses of ideology and utopia, however, with his contributions in other areas of philosophy such as hermeneutics, anthropology, embodiment, and philosophy of religion, one has fertile grounds for reflection in many directions. The essays in this book draw on these resources not only to engage the strengths and weaknesses of Ricoeur's original work, but they also expand his understanding in creative new directions such as the social imaginary, embodiment, gender theory, immigration, and extremist political rhetoric. The text will bring to the fore how this aspect of Ricoeur's work has significance for the wider twenty-first century political landscape. Just as his original work, this book provides much-needed resources for critique of each term, along with their relationship to one another, while recognizing the positive dimension of their function.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52627224953105,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52627225608465,"sku":"NLS9781498577311","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781498577311.jpg?v=1761692981"},{"product_id":"ricoeur-and-the-third-discourse-of-the-person-book-michael-t-h-wong-9781498513654","title":"Ricoeur and the Third Discourse of the Person","description":"Neuropsychiatrist Michael T. In this important new book, Brian Gregor draws on the full scope of Ricoeur's writings to lay out the essential features of his philosophical interpretation of religion, from his earliest to his last work. Ricoeur's central claim is that religion aims at the regeneration of human capability-in his words, the rebirth of the capable self. This book provides a rich thematic account of Ricoeur's hermeneutics of religion, showing how the theme of capability informs his changing interpretations of religion, from his early work on French reflexive philosophy and the philosophy of the will to his late work on forgiveness, mourning, and living up to death. Gregor exhibits Ricoeur's original contribution to philosophical reflection on such themes as evil, suffering, and violence, as well as imagination, embodiment, and spiritual exercise. He also presents a critical reconsideration of Ricoeur's separation of philosophy from theology, and his philosophical interpretation of Christian theological ideas of revelation, divine transcendence and personhood, atonement, and eschatology. Additionally, Gregor provides an expansive look at Ricoeur's interlocutors, including Marcel, Jaspers, Kant, Hegel, Levinas, and Girard. Theologically-inclined readers will be particularly interested in the book's treatment of Karl Barth and the Protestant theology of the Word, which was a vital influence on Ricoeur. The result is a study of Ricoeur that is both sympathetic and critical, provocative and original, inviting the reader into a deeper engagement with Ricoeur's philosophical interpretation of religion.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52673608057105,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52673608712465,"sku":"NLS9781498584739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781498584739.jpg?v=1762297494"},{"product_id":"companion-to-ricoeur-s-the-symbolism-of-evil-book-scott-davidson-9781498587143","title":"A Companion to Ricoeur's The Symbolism of Evil","description":"The Symbolism of Evil is the final book in Ricoeur's early trilogy on the will. While Freedom and Nature sets aside normative questions altogether and Fallible Man examines the question of what makes the bad will possible, here Ricoeur takes up the question of evil in its actuality. What is the nature of the will that has succumbed to evil? The question of evil resists reflection and remains inscrutable, leading Ricoeur to proceed indirectly through a study of the abundant resources contained in symbols and myths. Symbols, as Ricoeur famously says, give rise to thought and thereby open up a field of meanings which help to inform a philosophical reflection on evil. This hermeneutics of symbols signals an important shift in Ricoeur's philosophical trajectory, which increasingly turns to language and the various forms of discourse which harbor multiple meanings. The contributors to this volume, edited by Scott Davidson, highlight a wide range of important themes in Ricoeur's treatment of the symbolics of evil that resonate with current topics in contemporary philosophy and religion.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52688256729361,"sku":"NLS9781498587143","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781498587143.jpg?v=1762332450"},{"product_id":"narrative-medicine-in-hospice-care-book-tara-flanagan-9781498554640","title":"Narrative Medicine in Hospice Care","description":"Narrative medicine, an interdisciplinary field that brings together the studies of literature and medicine, offers both a way of understanding patient identity and a method for developing a clinician's responsiveness to patients. While recognizing the value of narrative medicine in clinical encounters, including the ethical aspects of patient discourse, Tara Flanagan examines the limits of narrative practices for patients with cognitive and verbal deficits. In Narrative Medicine in Hospice Care: Identity, Practice, and Ethics through the Lens of Paul Ricoeur, Flanagan contends that the models of selfhood and care found in the work of Ricoeur can offer a framework for clinicians and caregivers regardless of the verbal and cognitive capabilities of a patient at the end of life. In particular, Ricoeur's concept of patient identity connects with the narrative method of life review in hospice and offers an opportunity to address the religious and spiritual dimensions of the patient experience.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52688924508433,"sku":"NLS9781498554640","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781498554640.jpg?v=1762334151"},{"product_id":"dialogue-between-evolving-contemporary-psychoanalysis-and-paul-ricoeur-s-philoso-book-jeffrey-sacks-9798765155455","title":"A Dialogue Between Evolving Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Paul Ricoeur's Philosophical Anthropology","description":"Using elements of Ricoeur’s thought, psychoanalysts respond as both theoreticians and clinicians to his groundbreaking dialogue.  Beginning with Sigmund Freud, the relationship between philosophy and psychoanalysis has fallen short of its mutually enriching potential. This volume builds on Ricoeur’s sustained effort to construct an innovative bridge between the two disciplines and contributes to a long-overdue dialogue.  Ricoeur’s engagement with the Freudian opus was a vehicle for his philosophical anthropology, emphasizing the creativity of imagination and the power of the possible. Over the last sixty years, the challenges of Ricoeur’s commentary have changed in conjunction with the contemporary evolution of psychoanalysis. In this volume, the contributors explore the connections between philosophy and psychoanalysis, bringing the two into fruitful conversation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53637517705489,"sku":"NLS9798765155455","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9798765155455.jpg?v=1781004831"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/studies-in-the-thought-of-paul-ricoeur-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
