Renewable energy is recognised as providing the answer, with countries from around the world deciding at COP28 in 2023 to aim to triple the global renewable energy capacity by 2030, for the transition away from fossil fields to be on track for net-zero emissions by 2050. This Very Short Introduction describes the main sources of renewable energy- solar PV, wind, hydropower, and biomass - their innovative technologies, and what each could deliver. It also discusses the relatively small contributions expected from tidal, wave, geothermal, and nuclear power, and from carbon capture and storage. Nick Jelley presents how the variability of solar PV and wind power can be handled in an electricity grid predominantly powered by renewables, and discusses recent innovations in batteries and other energy storage technologies. Jelley goes on to explain the importance of decarbonising the huge global heat demand by using heat pumps, hydrogen from electrolysers, and electricity directly; and of changing to electric vehicles, which will decarbonise most of transport. Electrification of buildings, industry and transport for net-zero will roughly triple the supply of electricity, and this can be met predominantly by solar PV and wind power. The learning effect has resulted in a dramatic drop in the price of wind and solar PV power in the last decade, making them the cheapest generators of electricity in most parts of the world. This could make powering the world by renewables considerably cheaper than continuing to burn fossil fuels. Jelley explores the challenges in achieving this; notably, geopolitical tensions, lack of grid infrastructure, permitting (planning) issues, the availability of finance in the global South, and the vested interests in fossil fuels. The Very Short Introduction ends by discussing the actions needed that include strong consistent policies, financial initiatives to take advantage of the long-term benefits of renewables, and good community involvement. They contributed significantly to the massive transformation of the United States into the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world, particularly on the west coast and Hawaii. Unlike their European counterparts, however, Asians challenged American conceptions of racial homogeneity and national culture which produced legislative and institutional efforts to segregate them through immigration laws, restrictions on citizenship, and limits on employment, property ownership, access to public services, and civil rights. Only with World War II, the Cold War, and the Civil Rights era's remaking of racial ideologies and forging of a more egalitarian, multiethnic democracy Asian Americans have gained ground and acceptance, albeit in the still stereotyped category of "model minorities." Asian American History: A Very Short Introduction provides a narrative interpretation of key themes that emerge in the history of Asian migrations to North America. The Gulf War of 1991, the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the campaign against the Islamic State beginning in 2014 each had their own logic. Each occurrence was a distinct conflict; however they must not only be considered in isolation. The United States spent the 1990s trying but failing to implement the Gulf War's cease fire agreement. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, American leaders decided to settle the open-ended aftermath of the Gulf War by launching the Iraq War of 2003. The Iraq War unleashed resistance, civil war, insurgency and eventually the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Thus, following the Gulf War, each war was fought to finish the previous conflict. The Iraq Wars, therefore, are perhaps best understood as a chain of events. Academics, journalists, statesmen, and soldiers have produced many library shelves of books on the Iraq Wars. Yet, no short, easily digestible volume exists to synthesize this vast literature of both English and Arabic sources. It also investigates how slavery's long reach and afterlife has continued to shape Black life in the twenty-first century. By giving attention to the narratives produced during the last two hundred plus years, this volume examines American chattel slavery as a specific historical period that legally ended in 1865, and yet recognizes its impacts, effects, and significance as extending into the twenty-first century. Slave narratives tie the life of slavery its abolition with its afterlife and the reconfigurations that followed--Black Codes, Jim Crow segregation, and many other forms of disenfranchisement. Robert J. Patterson examines so-called "traditional" slave narratives alongside writings from non-enslaved Black people in the nineteenth century, the imaginative works of twentieth century fiction, and twenty-first century cinema to create a compelling and informative introduction to the long historical arc of slavery woven into the cultural and political fabric of America. According to United Nations estimates, 300 million people required humanitarian assistance and protection in 2024 alone, due to displacement, armed conflict, food insecurity, disasters, and the consequences of climate change. The international humanitarian system, in turn, plays a powerful role in 21st century global affairs. Since the 1990s, the aid sector has ballooned in size and influence. It is now a multi-billion-dollar industry, employing hundreds of thousands of people globally. In a clear, accessible, and concise narrative, Humanitarianism: A Very Short Introduction explains how and why this situation came to be. In this book, historian Julia F. Irwin traces the events and trends that defined modern humanitarianism, from the eighteenth century up to the present day. It describes the origins of international humanitarian action, the development of major humanitarian organizations and movements, the evolution of international humanitarian law, and the expansion of the international humanitarian sector. It examines organized efforts to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity amid major conflicts, disasters, refugee crises, and other humanitarian emergencies. At the same time, Irwin shows how beliefs about race, gender, religion, and nationality have historically influenced humanitarian sentiments and actions. Attuned to the distinctions between wartime, postwar, and non-conflict situations, Irwin assesses criticisms waged against humanitarian actions and debates over the legitimacy of humanitarian interventions. This Very Short Introduction also teases out the complex relationship between humanitarianism, human rights, and international development. Finally, this book surveys diverse and competing humanitarian traditions throughout the world, placing humanitarian ideals and practices in a global context. First popularized as a marketing rubric to sell African-American rhythm and blues to white teenagers, it stood for racial integration, sexual freedom, youthful rebellion, and for change and modernity. It was never a single kind of music, and historians disagree about when it began and which artists or records should be included in its canon--but it was always a flashpoint, whether condemned as an assault on cultural standards or hailed as the most exciting movement of the twentieth century. This Very Short Introduction explores the complex musical styles and evolutions of the genre and also examines it as product, symbol, and vehicle of societal change. The introduction seamlessly integrates the genre with elements of 1955-1965's mass influence including the rise of television and niche radio formats, the civil rights movement, a new concept of "teenagers" as a unique age group, and a sexual revolution. This Very Short Introduction explores his extraordinary life and thought. His complex system of criticism is difficult for many readers, but it is coherent in its combination of a Judaic theological perspective with cultural Marxism. Benjamin's distinctive approach considered literary criticism, visual media, and the impact of cosmopolitanism. This innovative messianic understanding of history would go on to inspire countless critics and even entire schools of academia. Born into a wealthy German-Jewish family, Benjamin lived much of his life in poverty and exile, and he committed suicide in 1940 while fleeing the Nazis. In his lifetime, he was known only to a small group of intimate friends, notably Gershom Scholem, Bertold Brecht, and Theodor Adorno. His close compatriots had been trying desperately to rescue him at the time of his death. All attempts failed -- but his thought remains crucial to understanding the crises of our present world. Its status as one of the largest wheat and grain exporters shapes commodity prices across the globe, while Russia's enormous arms industry, second only to the United States, provides it with the means to pursue an increasingly assertive foreign policy. All this means that Russia's economy is crucial in serving the country's political objectives, both within Russia and across the world. Russia today has a distinctly political type of economy that is neither the planned economy of the Soviet era, nor a market-based economy of the Euro-Atlantic variety. Instead, its economic system is characterised by a unique blend of state and market; control and freedom; and natural resources alongside human ingenuity.

The Russian Economy: A Very Short Introduction introduces readers to the dimensions of the Russian economy that are often ignored by the media and public figures, or exaggerated and misunderstood. In doing so, it shows how Russia's economy is one of global significance, and helps explain why many of Russia's enduring features, such as the heavy hand of the state and the emphasis on military-industrial production, have persisted despite the immense changes that took place after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Far from a fixed tradition, Latinx literature arises from a kaleidoscope of voices rooted in transhemispheric exchange--from pre-conquest Indigenous storytelling to Spanish colonial chronicles, to the contemporary works shaped by migration, memory, and resistance. Aldama offers an illuminating overview of the major figures, movements, and themes that have defined Latinx literature across time and place. Rather than attempting a single, all-encompassing narrative, this Very Short Introduction weaves together a layered account that reflects the lived experiences and diverse cultural heritages of authors of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central American, and South American descent. Readers encounter a dynamic cast of storytellers--poets, novelists, playwrights, comic creators, and more--each responding to the political and cultural conditions of their moment while shaping new literary terrains. The result is a nuanced understanding of Latinx literature as a dynamic continuum shaped by centuries of cultural exchange, resilience, and transformation. This Very Short Introduction explores our understanding of moral responsibility and what it involves. This includes various practical problems that we face in dealing with it in a truthful, effective, and humane way. The picture presented is one that falls in the territory that lies between a consoling optimism and a bleak pessimism about our human ethical predicament. Despite great diversity, there are values common across centuries and instrumentation. First, a principle of one player per part, without a conductor. Second, that location is more a state of mind than an actual venue--thus, chamber music can exist in the home and on the concert platform. Third, it is the province of both amateurs and professionals. This Very Short Introduction explores why chamber music has become so valued by players, scholars, and audiences. Laura Tunbridge draws out the sociable aspect of music-making, apparent in metaphors of conversation, its presence in domestic spaces, and the ethics of all parts being equal. Through concise and accessible examples, Tunbridge explores the many forms and sizes taken by chamber music ensembles and the impact of music publishing and concert programming on this repertoire. She draws on the patterns of where musicians train and work, driven by economics, politics, and aesthetics. Rather than assuming that this type of music now is primarily about passive consumption, Chamber Music: A Very Short Introduction argues that the relatively small scale of chamber groups has made them mobile and adaptable, and thus particularly well-suited to engaging with and forming communities. Jonathan Ellis considers the importance of letter writing manuals, the essay as a type of epistolary writing, and the significance of various sub-genres, including the advice letter and the love letter.
