His corpse, transported by a British submarine, was found by the Spaniards on the Huelva beach. The documents he possessed were passed by the Spanish to German agents, and reached Berlin, who immediately informed Rome. But the plan, which was hailed in Anglo-Saxon countries as an exceptional success that would even have conditioned the outcome of the war in favour of the Allies, diverting the Germans' attention from reinforcing Sicily, did not go as they believed it would, so much so that they made two fictional and false films about it. Per molti l'870  Nucleo Speciale Guastatori Genio   solamente un nome, o poco pi , all'interno degli annali della Storia Militare italiana. Lo era anche per me fino ad un anno fa. Ma poi avvengono incontri (anche se solo telefonici) con persone che ti portano un nuovo punto di vista. Vengo infatti contattato da Giandomenico De Sanctis, figlio dell'eroico Giorgio, che desidera parlarmi, appunto, del reparto comandato da suo padre, reparto poco o nulla citato, nemmeno in un libro scritto a quattro mani da me e da Luigi Manes nel 2018 sul Primo Raggruppamento Motorizzato, Corpo Italiano di Liberazione e Gruppi di Combattimento cobelligeranti. Giandomenico De Sanctis mi racconta, mi parla di suo padre, ogni volta aggiunge informazioni, stimolando la mia (grande) fame e curiosit  storica, condividendo con me i numerosi documenti raccolti dal padre: relazioni scritte di suo pugno, relazioni di ufficiali italiani, proposte di decorazione, lettere di stima ed elogi italiani ed americani, motivazioni di decorazioni, fotografie. E nasce cos  l'idea di questo libro, un volume che vuole raccogliere tutte queste testimonianze, che vuole raccontare la storia di un piccolo manipolo di arditi giovani, che combatterono con eroismo e fecero con senso del dovere la loro parte nel tremendo meccanismo che fu la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Sono questi incontri che danno, pi  di altre cose, un senso al lavoro di ricerca storica, il poter abbinare nomi, foto e documenti, ma soprattutto poter parlare con persone direttamente (anche solo marginalmente) coinvolte nella grande danza della Storia, dopo ancora cos  tanti anni. Al termine di questo lungo periodo di studio, che ha portato alla stesura di questo volume, desidero ringraziare in primo luogo Giandomenico De Sanctis, figlio di Giorgio: senza di lui non sarebbe stato possibile raccontare questo cameo di eroismo e di storia militare italiana. Oltre ad avere generosamente aperto l'archivio del padre, ha risposto pazientemente alle mie innumerevoli domande e questioni, mi ha aiutato a dipanare dubbi ed aspetti poco chiari, a completare informazioni, fornendomi documenti e fotografie... e molto tempo prezioso. Tra le misure di depistaggio la pi  famosa ed elaborata fu l'operazione Mincemeat Glyndwr Michael, un gallese morto per edema polmonare, venne trovato in un obitorio e vestito della divisa militare sotto il nome di un fantomatico maggiore William Martin dei Royal Marines. La sua morte fu simulata come causata da annegamento, avvenuto mentre si trovava in volo su un aereo che per un incidente sarebbe precipitato in mare presso le coste Atlantiche della Spagna meridionale, con falsi documenti confidenziali che indicavano come obiettivi di uno sbarco la Grecia e probabilmente anche la Sardegna. Il suo cadavere, trasportato da un sommergibile britannico, fu trovato dagli spagnoli sulla spiaggia di Huelva. I documenti che possedeva furono passati dagli spagnoli ad agenti tedeschi, e pervennero a Belino, che subito ne inform  Roma. Ma il piano, osannato nei paesi anglosassoni come un successo eccezionale che avrebbe perfino condizionato l'esito della guerra a favore degli alleati, sviando l'attenzione dei tedeschi dal rafforzamento della Sicilia, non and  come essi credevano, tanto farci due film, romanzati e falsi. La sera del 2 dicembre decollarono dagli aeroporti dell'Italia settentrionale 105 bombardieri Junker 88 di sei Gruppi da bombardamento e di essi 88 attaccarono l'obiettivo con effetti disastrosi per gli alleati, successo conseguito con la sola perdita di due Ju. 88. L'attacco caus  gravi perdite agli anglo-americani, che non subivano un'incursione aerea di sorpresa cosi devastante dall'epoca in cui, il 7 dicembre 1941, i giapponesi avevano attaccato la flotta statunitense a Pearl Harbor. Le navi affondate a Bari, incluse quelle di piccolo tonnellaggio furono 21 ed altre 12 pi  o meno danneggiate. I relitti delle navi affondate causarono il blocco del porto per tre settimane, con il risultato che per sbarcare i rifornimenti necessari per l'approvvigionamento terrestre ed aereo, allo scopo di non ritardare l'avanzata in Italia, gli anglo-americani dovettero usare al massimo delle loro possibilit  di attracco i porti di Brindisi e di Taranto. Durante l'assedio, le forze tedesche contarono oltre 6.000 morti e 23.000 feriti per difendere Breslau, mentre le perdite sovietiche furono oltre 60.000. I morti fra i civili furono pari a 80.000. Breslau era l'ultima grande citt  in Germania alla resa, capitolando solo due giorni prima della fine della guerra in Europa.
