During this time, he compiled historical notes on his diocese from a range of medieval and contemporary sources. His survey contains detailed information on parishes, including their sizes, populations and economies. The notes also provide invaluable data on administrative matters such as the development of the towns within the diocese, notably including records of acts of charity and records of the grammar schools and their governors, finances and statutes. This 1990 publication, prepared by L. A. S. Butler, is the first printed edition of the notes relating to the Yorkshire parishes that had been transferred within the archdeaconry of Richmond to the bishopric of Chester. With full editorial apparatus, and thorough indexes of persons, clergy and places, this work stands as an important resource for church, social and local historians.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49574597886225,"sku":"GOR013642645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0902122568.jpg?v=1750747688"},{"product_id":"memoirs-and-memorials-of-sir-hugh-cholmley-of-whitby-1600-1657-book-hugh-cholmley-9780902122833","title":"The Memoirs and Memorials of Sir Hugh Cholmley of Whitby, 1600-1657","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50560710377745,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50560710607121,"sku":"GOR007758411","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0902122835.jpg?v=1750747689"},{"product_id":"woollen-manufacturing-in-yorkshire-book-john-smail-9780902122888","title":"Woollen Manufacturing in Yorkshire","description":"Anyone interested in the domestic system of cloth manufacture will find this publication a treasure house of insight. ALBION Will become an important source for historians of the wool textile industries in the eighteenth century. Brearley's idiosyncratic jottings, far rarer as those of a skilled artisan than the more usual observations of a merchant or early factory owner, provide an uncommon chronicle of a key region on the brink of great change. Textile historians are greatly in Smail's debt. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW This edition of the memorandum books of John Brearley of Wakefield provides a fascinating insight into the economic and social conditions prevalent in West Yorkshire in the middle of the eighteenth century. Brearley worked in Wakefield as a cloth frizzer, operating a mill which put a fine raised nap on woollen cloth by running it between two boards covered with sand. Many of the entries in his memorandum book reflect his familiarity with the region's woollen and worsted industries, covering all aspects of the trade, from directions for making particular kinds of cloth or dyeing a particular colour, to descriptions of merchants' activities, and the markets, domestic and foreign, where they bought and sold cloth. Brearley's work as a frizzer underlies the many entries describing machines and inventions (some more practical than others) which are described and often drawn in these pages. Still other entries - ranging from recipes for ketchup and bread, to get-rich-quick schemes, to observations on women, drinking, and the marital habits of merchants - provide a flavour of life in the pre-industrial north at the beginning of George I's reign.JOHN SMAIL teaches history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51402911645969,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51402911711505,"sku":"GOR014259835","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0902122886.jpg?v=1751420994"},{"product_id":"yorkshire-church-notes-of-sir-stephen-glynne-1825-1874-book-sir-stephen-glynne-9781903564806","title":"The Yorkshire Church Notes of Sir Stephen Glynne (1825-1874)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52498664882449,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52498665013521,"sku":"GOR010761427","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781903564806.jpg?v=1760098648"},{"product_id":"cartulary-of-st-leonard-s-hospital-york-book-david-x-carpenter-9781903564226","title":"The Cartulary of St Leonard's Hospital, York","description":"St Leonard's Hospital at York, originally called St Peter's, was once one of York's most powerful institutions. Founded in the late eleventh century, it remained a significant component of city life for four and a half centuries, until it fell with the monasteries in the reign of Henry VI. It was for many years the largest foundation of its kind in the kingdom, its income bearing comparison with that of the more powerful monasteries. The hospital's cartulary, written in the first quarter of the fifteenth century, is a masterpiece of accuracy and organisation. This edition of the volume containing the hospital's charters for the West and East Ridings of Yorkshire, now in the Bodleian library, is supplemented by material from other cartularies, antiquarian transcripts, and surviving originals. The introduction discusses the production of the cartulary, and the fate of the hospital's archive after the Dissolution. An appendix gives biographical details for the masters, and there are extensive editorial notes on the landholdings and the families appearing in the documents. David X. Carpenter now works on the charters of William I and Henry I at the Faculty of History, University of Oxford.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52728478269713,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52728478335249,"sku":"GOR014602382","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781903564226.jpg?v=1763213687"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/yorkshire-archaeological-society-record-series-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
