The houses are tastefully furnished with one-of-a-kind artisanal pieces (by Wendell Castle, Chris Lehrecke, etc.) and museum-quality collections of contemporary art hanging on the walls (such as works by Anselm Kiefer, Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, and Cindy Sherman). They feature infinity pools, outdoor and indoor kitchens, roof decks, temperature-controlled wine cellars, and numerous guest rooms, as well as ten-foot-high doorways and floor-to-ceiling swathes of tempered glass to better gaze out at the dunes and ocean views.  The new photography beautifully captures the architects  attention to detail and love of specialized materials, whether it s Carrara marble from Italy or teak from Bali. While Melich built projects in the United States and England, he s best remembered for the romantic follies he designed in the 1960s and 1970s in sunny island retreats like Lyford Cay, Harbour Island, and Windermere Island in the Bahamas. Melich created a romantic sense of escape with a softly cushioned whimsy and discrete sense of tranquillity. His signature motifs included faux marbled walls, seasoned wood, colonnades and tent-like interiors with striped ceilings that suited the playful mood of the moment, documented in Island Follies with the warm touch of Slim Aarons and with new photography of many previously unpublished interiors. Gardens with Bougainvillea-draped pergolas, ivy-clad alcoves, palm-lined allees are just some of the other features that extended the architecture into the tropical landscape. The book, by award-winning author Alastair Gordon, is more of a personal memoir than a conventional monograph, tracing as it does the architect's picaresque journey from an orphanage in the Bronx to an adoptive family in San Francisco, to the ivied halls of Princeton and Harvard, to an apprenticeship with architect I.M. Pei and the establishment of an independent practice in 1978. A signature sensibility - minimal yet elegantly crafted, with a jeweller's attention to detail - evolved through early commissions - a private barge on the Hudson River, a master plan for the Brooklyn Museum - in which he explored the inherent mysteries of form, scale, and light. A glass-and-steel addition for the Morgan Library (1992) was hailed by the New York Times as an artful \"combination of intimacy and grandeur.  For the Asia Society in Manhattan, Voorsanger created a luminous garden courtyard and a serpent-like staircase which was based, in part, on a Ming Dynasty flask that the architect found in the museum's collection. Undulating trajectories of work and life intersect throughout the story. In many of Voorsanger's projects there are suggestions of a pilgrimage across space, a sequence of opening and closing, turning and unfolding, as with a series of pavilions designed for the World War II Museum in New Orleans, the wing-like roof of a mountain retreat for Russian oligarch Roman Abromovich, a twisting control tower for Newark Airport, or the highly sculpted interior of a bachelor's loft in Tribeca. In some of the later work there's an unsettled Dr. Caligari geometry of axial rotations and splintered spaces. Walls tilt back and overlap. Natural light penetrates the outer membrane. Multi-faceted roofs engage the sky. Voorsanger's architectural practice served as an emotional anchor through trying times and helped to bring a sense of ceremonial order to life's messy uncertainties. There was the adoption of two Iranian orphans; divorce from his first wife; a broken business partnership; the loss of his second wife to cancer; and a near-fatal embolism. In 1987, Voorsanger's twenty-nine-year-old daughter, Roxanna, was senselessly murdered. As a form of eulogy, the architect designed a new kind of housing prototype. It was an elegiac gesture from father to daughter in which deep, personal loss was transformed, somehow, into healing space.  \"I don't give a damn about myself, but I care deeply about my work,\" he says, acknowledging the number of times that his art has rescued him from a nagging sense of despair and existential dislocation. \"Architecture has literally saved my life.\"","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50660167647505,"sku":"CIN1939621437VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51056033693969,"sku":"NIN9781939621436","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1939621437.jpg?v=1751380728"},{"product_id":"spaced-out-book-alastair-gordon-9780847831050","title":"Spaced Out","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51756429967633,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51756430917905,"sku":"CIN0847831051G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53205713060113,"sku":"GOR007505643","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780847831050.jpg?v=1751292918"},{"product_id":"weekend-utopia-revised-and-expanded-edition-book-alastair-gordon-9781797241845","title":"Weekend Utopia Revised and Expanded Edition","description":"An expanded new edition of this fascinating and lavishly illustrated landmark volume offers a guided tour of Hamptons history and the architects and personalities—artists and designers, eccentrics and dreamers—who transformed this once-sleepy rural outpost to the high-powered resort it is today.    “Weekend Utopia brings to vivid life a century in the architectural and social history of the East End.”    – Best Books of 2001, New York Times Book Review  The Hamptons have long served as a release valve for the urban pressures of New York City. Weekend Utopia traces the competitive, often humorous, and always compelling development of this incandescently beautiful but maddeningly self-conscious seaside paradise. Journalist and critic Alastair Gordon looks behind the hype of this charmed seaside realm to reveal the true legacy of the Hamptons as an incubator of cutting-edge art, architecture, and lifestyle that has helped to redefine the very notion of American leisure. But on this particular morning, he never returned. With his disappearance, Jaffe left behind many unanswered questions--not only about the cause of his death but also about the nature of his architectural legacy. Romantic Modernist: The Life and Work of Norman Jaffe, Architect is the first book to explore Jaffe's body of work and the inner struggle that shaped his life. One of the earliest architects to be treated as a sex symbol, Jaffe was, in fact, much more than that. A magnetic, free-spirited individual, he is best known for the strikingly sculptural houses he designed in the Hamptons, which he approached from an almost mystical point of view: with the right proportions and materials, he believed, houses provide a path to self-discovery. Through interviews with Jaffe's closest friends and associates, Alastair Gordon traces Jaffe's career trajectory from his early years on the West Coast through his increasingly celebrated life in New York, giving readers a rare look at the creative process of this seductive, enigmatic architect.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52374656647441,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52374660579601,"sku":"CIN1580931561G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781580931564.jpg?v=1758210696"},{"product_id":"crass-reflections-book-alastair-gordon-9781909798229","title":"Crass Reflections","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53270644424977,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53270644523281,"sku":"GOR009921632","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909798229.jpg?v=1774033502"},{"product_id":"arquitectonica-book-alastair-gordon-9780847859993","title":"Arquitectonica","description":"Arquitectonica is the design firm that put Miami on the map for the cool, hip, very now architecture that was first celebrated on TV in Miami Vice. Since their founding four decades ago, the firm has grown exponentially in stature, and its energies have only increased.  Arquitectonica is a major presence on the world architectural stage, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Manila, Dubai, Lima, and Sao Paulo. Founded in 1977, the firm received critical and popular attention and acclaim almost from its inception, thanks to a bold modernism that was immediately identified with a renaissance in Miami s urban landscape. Principals Bernardo Fort-Brescia and Laurinda Spear continue to this day exploring and pushing the limits of materials and design with their innovative use of geometry, pattern, and colour. The first book on this major international architectural design firm since Rizzoli s own Arquitectonica (2004), this volume is a retrospective of the firm s forty-year history, considering its earliest projects the archetypal and hugely influential Pink House and Babylon Apartments to Regalia Condominium tower, its twenty-first-century masterwork of undulant glass and steel.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53599059443985,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53599059738897,"sku":"CIN0847859991VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780847859993.jpg?v=1779840046"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-ch\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-alastair-gordon.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
