The author visits Kelmscott Manor, the home of William Morris; and Patrishow Church in Breconshire, a remote resort of pilgrims, preserved and restored over the centuries. She discovers Shropshire's eccentric Clun, once a busy market town, now a quiet artist's haunt; and rediscovers the beauty of Frampton, birthplace of Rosamund Clifford, hidden between the M5 and the River Severn. She travels to Surrey to visit the resting place of G.F. Watts and revels in winter in Wistman's Wood on Dartmoor, where the wet and the wilderness cast a spell of their own. At Ford, a few miles from Flodden Field, quirky personalities and violent clashes have combined to give the border village a peculiarly interesting history; while in the Westernmost part of Wiltshire, at Hindon, farmers, painters and retired colonels still rub shoulders at an inn which used to entertain smugglers and coachmen.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49514384523537,"sku":"GOR002066596","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49602690253073,"sku":"GOR002382273","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49802195763473,"sku":"CIN1857936817VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50392235868433,"sku":"CIN1857936817G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857936817.jpg?v=1750931401"},{"product_id":"john-betjeman-letters-book-candida-lycett-green-9780413775962","title":"John Betjeman Letters","description":"John Betjeman (1906-1984) was not simply one of the best-loved contemporary English poets but was also one of the best-loved Englishmen of the twentieth century. He was never, nor strove to be, the darling of intellectuals or academics, but by pure chance became the darling of the ordinary man in the street. Volume I of Betjeman's selected letters covers his life from university days through to his period on the staff of The Architectural Review and as editor of the Shell Guides in the thirties; his time as Press Attache in Dublin during the War; and his activities as a broadcaster on radio and television and as a public speaker which established him as an authority and enthusiast in a wide range of fields - literary, artistic, architectural. Volume II covers his life from the age of forty-six when his popularity as poet and broadcaster and as campaigner against the destruction of fine buildings was reaching its height. His correspondents ranged from people in the world of literature and the arts - T. S. Eliot, Cyril Connolly, Evelyn Waugh, Auberon Waugh, John Piper, Philip Larkin and Kingsley Amis, to family and cherished friends - Alan Pryce-Jones, Myfanwy Piper, Nancy Mitford, Osbert Lancaster and later Mary Wilson. He wrote eloquently and passionately on poetry, religion, architecture and town planning and letters to his family recorded adventures in America - gloomy, and Australia - jubilant. His letters are at once serious, comforting, sparkling with humour and sometimes as tumultuous as life itself. In these two volumes, Candida Lycett Green has created a loving portrait of her father, and her notes and introductions to the works serve to amplify her own feelings for a kindly, gentle and universally admired man. Framed by a recent journey on horseback from Yorkshire to the Scottish borders, this lifelong odyssey dips back into similar journeys in her past, revealing an idyllic childhood in the bohemian Betjeman household, with moonlit rides over the Downs, and wild picnics on Cornish beaches; a charmed youth in the swinging 60s, participating in the founding of Private Eye and travelling overland to India with her husband Rupert Lycett Green; and a subsequent journey undertaken with her own children and friends along the forgotten paths and bridleways of England. Blending lyrical impressions of landscape with echoes of her father's writing, this horseback amble combines the poetic with the down-to-earth, stately homes with humble farms, soaring churches with winding country lanes. Candid's recent fight with breast cancer poignantly underpins this personal story.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49539239379217,"sku":"GOR002506802","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49546801185041,"sku":"GOR004104688","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49959447822609,"sku":"CIN0385603312G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0385603312.jpg?v=1751196385"},{"product_id":"over-the-hills-and-far-away-book-candida-lycett-green-9780552777162","title":"Over The Hills And Far Away","description":"From her early childhood, when her inspirational mother would take her on trips along her beloved Ridgeway in a horse-drawn cart, Candida Lycett Green has retained a love of green lanes and tracks, of moving along at horse's pace and casting an eye on the beauty of England through the back door. That is what Candida Lycett Green has done, and the result is an idiosyncratic and occasionally provocative collection of over 80 pen portraits. These have been photographed by Christopher Simon Sykes and include gems from five architectural periods; Tudor to early Renaissance, Renaissance to Baroque, Georgian, Regency and Edwardian to the Thirties. Houses such as oak-timbered Elizabethan at The Ley in Herefordshire, measured Carolean symmetry at South Luffenham Hall in Rutland, rural baroque at Biddensden House in Wiltshire, miniature Palladian at Ebberston Hall in Yorkshire, Romantic Gothic at Midford Castle in Somerset, masculine Regency at Letheringsett in Norfolk, Arts and Crafts Movement romance and practicality at Broadleys on Lake Windermere and International Modern at Cherry Hill in Berkshire are each considered as perfect gems in the rich panoply of such vernacular architecture. Candida Lycett Green describes the setting and appearances of each house, dwelling on details and eccentricities, and observing that demotion from main residence or to farmhouse status has often been a blessing in disguise, preserving for the house its architectural integrity against the whims of fashion and modernization. The profile is completed by the lives each house has touched, and she sketches in some of the gentlemanly occupants - cavaliers and clergymen, gamblers and gardeners - as well as the odd dowager. The more recent names include Rothschild, Jekyll, Beaton and Betjeman. Several of these houses have personal associations for the author, notably the Old Rectory at Farnborough where she spent her childhood. The Perfect English Country House is an informal layperson's guide to the evolution of the smaller English house - and much more besides. Houses such as these are not just examples of architectural perfection but bear eloquent testimony to the phases of English history. While Christopher Simon Sykes' photographs capture the places as they are today, the lively and informative text also illuminates the past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49577245540625,"sku":"GOR001529132","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49849410027793,"sku":"GOR010968165","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50447558476049,"sku":"CIN1851458867G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52102414631185,"sku":"GOR002549283","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851458867.jpg?v=1750834724"},{"product_id":"unwrecked-england-book-candida-lycett-green-9781901170146","title":"Unwrecked England","description":"Alexandrie, Egypte, 1923.
