The Canadian photographer worked almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide film for over 50 years, and only in the past decade has technology allowed him to make archival pigment prints that match the exceptional color and intensity of the Kodachrome slide. In this respect, his photographs can be seen as a pre-figuration of the New Color photographers of the seventies.This book will bring together over 230 images, many never before reproduced, and will feature essays by acclaimed authors David Campany and Hans-Michael Koetzle. It would be tempting to read these photographs as a polemic against the triumph of consumerism and a slowly numbing global visual-economic order that wraps itself around whatever once felt local and civic. Samoylova’s photography is full of masterful refinements of the existing clichés of urban photography: Citizens dwarfed by giant images. Faces and bodies refracted through glass. The Pop-Cubism of visual bricolage. The minuscule human figures that stroll seemingly indifferent through city space while being at least partly somewhere else in their imaginations - their existence already a collage of places and times. Yet, Samoylova consciously engages with cliché, takes it apart and reassembles it, gambling that it can be taken to a level of pictorial sophistication that eludes any simple argument or statement. Instead, she invites us to reflect on photography’s role in the creation of a gap between these citie’s brand identity and their everyday reality.
A major new monograph on the American photographer Louis Stettner (1922–2016), published to accompany the largest retrospective on his work to date. Brooklyn-born Louis Stettner (1922–2016) created thousands of images over the course of a career that spanned almost eighty years. Acquiring his first camera as a young teenager, he quickly made a name for himself at New York’s famous Photo League, where he formed friendships with Sid Grossman and Weegee. He served as a combat photographer in World War II, and the experience of fighting fascism left him with a lasting belief in the fundamental humanity of the common man. After the war, Stettner arrived in Paris in 1947, where he stayed for five years. During this time, he forged a lasting relationship with Brassaï, the city and its people. Stettner’s work defies categorization, containing elements of both the New York street photography aesthetic and the lyrical humanism of the French tradition. A lifelong Marxist, Stettner celebrated the working class and was inspired by his reading of Walt Whitman and the inner humanity that constantly drew him to the lives of ordinary men and women. For all its diversity, however, Stettner’s work is thematically consistent: he sought out beauty in common people and their everyday life. Accompanying the largest retrospective on Stettner’s work to date, this substantial monograph at last gives his work the recognition it deserves. Essays by David Campany, James Iffland, Karl Orend and Sally Martin Katz chart Stettner's work chronologically from his early days in New York and Paris, through to his later use of colour photography, to his final meditations on the landscape of Les Alpilles. Showcasing more than 150 photographs spanning his entire career, the book also includes previously unpublished images and some of his hitherto almost unknown colour work, as well as a selection of Stettner’s writings. Accompanies the travelling exhibition of the same name, which showed at MAPFRE Madrid from June to August 2023, and is at MAPFRE Barcelona from June to September 2024.
Considers the importance of the still image for filmmakers such as the Lumiere brothers, Alfred Hitchcock, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean-Luc Godard, Chris Marker, Mark Lewis, Agnes Varda, Peter Weir, Christopher Nolan and many others.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0784/4072/6801/files/1861893515_10320ba1-ee7d-452b-b953-5b0faaf649b6.jpg?v=1762339403
This survey of recent work by British artist John Hilliard (born 1945) examines his conceptual approach to photography. But there have always been articulate voices, able to see past the obvious, around the distracting, and through the trivial to say something about the more profound aspects of the medium. Many of those voices have belonged to image makers. The critic and exhibitions curator David Campany, often invited by photographers and museums to write about their practice during his career, talked with world-class artists - Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Daniel Blaufuks, Robert Cumming, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Lewis Baltz, John Stezaker, Paul Graham, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Jeff Wall, Lucas Blalock, Susan Meiselas, Victor Burgin, William Klein, Stephen Shore - to interrogate them about their past, the various creative phases they crossed over, and above all their rapport with photographic medium and reality. That is why these conversations transcend the dimension of the simple interview to reveal the close connection between art and author photography, between photography and the world, between thought and speech. Because, as noted by the author in his introduction, whether long or short, nearly all these conversations were open-ended. Neither party knew where we might be going or where things would end up. For me, that is always the real value of a conversation, as opposed to an interview (or a questionnaire). There is risk and excitement, a sense of mutual exploration and speculation.
Working Men's Clubs were originally set up for the support and education of the working man. Much recent cinema, meanwhile, is rich with references to contemporary photography. Video art has taken a photographic turn into pensive slowness; photography now has at its disposal the budgets and scale of cinema. This addition to Whitechapel's Documents of Contemporary Art series surveys the rich history of creative interaction between the moving and the still photograph, tracing their ever-changing relationship since early modernism.

Still photography--cinema's ghostly parent--was eclipsed by the medium of film, but also set free. The rise of cinema obliged photography to make a virtue of its own stillness. Film, on the other hand, envied the simplicity, the lightness, and the precision of photography. Russian Constructivist filmmakers considered avant-garde cinema as a sequence of graphic shots; their Bauhaus, Constructivist and Futurist photographer contemporaries assembled photographs into a form of cinema on the page. In response to the rise of popular cinema, Henri Cartier-Bresson exalted the decisive moment of the still photograph. Leading British collage and appropriation artist John Stezaker began his ongoing series of film still collages in 1979 – the result of a period that marked a crucial change in the direction of the artist’s work, which had previously been centered around a text-based ‘conceptualism’. The series moves with Stezaker’s changing interests, using stills from classic American-period Hitchcock films as raw material before shifting towards the undistinguishable mass of 1940s and early 1950s low-budget studio films. Featuring collages based on a combination of film still excisions and superimpositions, this ongoing series is catalogued comprehensively for the first time in this volume, which brings together Stezaker’s earliest film still collages with his most recent. Full-colour illustrations are accompanied by an essay by David Campany and a conversation between the critic and the artist. John Stezaker (b.1949, Worcester) is one of the leading artists in contemporary photographic collage and appropriation. Employing vintage photographs, old Hollywood film stills, travel postcards and other printed matter, Stezaker creates small-format collages that bear qualities of Surrealism, Dada and found art. Evans worked in every genre and format, in black and white and in color, but two passions were constant: literature and the printed page. While his photographic books are among the most influential in the medium's history, Evans's more ephemeral pages remain largely unknown. From small avant-garde publications to mainstream titles such as Fortune, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Architectural Forum and Life, he produced an innovative and independent counter-commentary on America, often setting his own assignments, editing, writing and designing his pages. Presenting many of Evans's photo-essays in their entirety, David Campany assembles a forgotten history, allowing us to see how Evans protected his autonomy, earned a living and reached audiences far beyond the museum and gallery.
In her new book, Lise Sarfati takes us back to the oddly deserted heart of the city of Los Angeles. Almost deserted ... as lonesome men walk dispassionately through the streets, as if on a mission but without any obvious destination. The sun in Oh Man is high, the unifying emptiness of the street basked in the Californian light. The nameless men's random silhouettes stand out distinctively in front of the city's characteristic urban backdrop, their central positioning lending them an extraordinary prominence in Sarfati's photographs. These images add up to a long, aloof traveling, devoid of any narrative and anecdotes, drifting by the evocative sharp lines and angles of the warehouses, the lettering and colors of a Hopperian puritanism opening up the roads to the protagonists.These photographs were taken in 2012 and 2013. After carefully choosing her locations of interest, Sarfati spent days waiting in full panoply for the right moment to manifest itself.Sarfati gives us suggestions - more than propositions - that seem to develop in-between the images rather than within each image, like the unpredictable weed growing wild from the grooves between cobblestones. Photographer friends persuaded him that he could help pay the rent by landing some magazine assignments, and that a carousel tray of slides would be the best way of convincing art directors to take a chance on him. So, often after spending a day in the streets photographing in black-and-white, he would put a roll of Kodachrome film in his camera on his walk home and make color pictures, in many cases of shop windows, a subject he was convinced might help him earn a bit of commercial work.

This re-issue of Dr. Blankman's New York, first published by Steidl in 2017, has enlarged the size of the plates and, with one exception, condensed the original design to a series of double spreads, intensifying the sense that what Papageorge was doing in these photographs was elaborating, on a parallel track, the portrayal of Manhattan presented in the black-and-white work of "Down to the City," the first volume of his War and Peace in New York (also published by Steidl this season).
