The report stresses that humanitarian assistance alone is not enough to win the battle against acute hunger. In 2018, FAO's work ranged from immediate humanitarian response to protect lives and livelihoods in some of the most complex contexts in the world, including South Sudan and Yemen, to addressing the vulnerability of pastoral populations and facilitating the development of livestock feed balances in the Horn of Africa, among many other areas of action. The report concludes that there is a need for more effective collaboration across sectors, using a systems approach to address the multiple drivers of fragility and vulnerability and deliver more inclusive, holistic, resilient, and sustainable solutions. This means bringing together work on peace and security, human rights, social protection, gender equality and equitable access to land.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49616000483601,"sku":"GOR013680491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251314543.jpg?v=1750873132"},{"product_id":"regional-analysis-of-the-nationally-determined-contributions-in-the-near-east-an-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251357804","title":"Regional analysis of the nationally determined contributions in the Near East and North Africa","description":"This report provides a unique, sector-specific synthesis of the agriculture, water and land use sectors in the nationally determined contributions from Near East and North Africa. It outlines policy interventions, resilience programming, and research areas that could enhance the resilience of pastoral livelihoods systems. Pastoral livestock production is practised in an area representing 43 percent of Africa's land mass, and in some regions it represents the dominant livelihood system. It covers 36 countries, stretching from the Sahelian West to the rangelands of Eastern Africa and the Horn and the nomadic populations of Southern Africa, with an estimated 268 million pastoralists. Pastoralism developed 7000 years ago and spread throughout Northern Africa as an adaptation to a rapidly changing and increasingly unpredictable arid climate. It remains an important solution, as it allows pastoral herds to use drier areas during the wet season and more humid areas during the dry season. It thereby ensures access for pastoral livestock to sufficient high-quality grazing and creates economic value.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49737511338257,"sku":"NGR9789251308981","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251308985.jpg?v=1750840091"},{"product_id":"report-of-the-expert-meeting-on-ciguatera-poisoning-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251325186","title":"Report of the Expert Meeting on Ciguatera poisoning","description":"This publication provides a risk assessment of known toxins leading to ciguatera poisoning as well as guidance on risk management options, including establishing and\/or strengthening surveillance programmes and monitoring transmission through the food web. While in some regions it has been known for centuries, its true incidence is not fully understood, with an estimated 10 000–50 000 people affected every year. CP is predicted to become more common due to climate change and the globalization of trade, which may contribute to its spread. CP is caused by the consumption of marine species that have become toxic from feeding on toxic benthic dinoflagellates (Gambierdicus toxicus) or from the consumption of carnivorous marine species that have consumed other toxic species that have fed on the dinoflagellate. However, without implementation of the NDCs, net emissions are expected to increase by around 30 percent in 2030 compared to 2015 levels. Under the mitigation scenario, total net emissions in the region are expected to decrease by roughly 17 percent compared to the 2030 counterfactual scenario. Around 80 percent of that reduction is conditional to international financial support. The report concludes that addressing the financial, human, institutional and organisational barriers to the uptake and dissemination of technologies will be key to upscaling climate action in the agriculture and land use sectors. Investments in the sustainable management and use of forests, as well as ocean and coastal zones and water resources will be needed. It also identifies opportunities for governments to strengthen their sectoral mitigation and adaptation ambitions, capture synergies and accelerate progress on the sustainable development agenda. While the Pacific region contributes in general less than 0.04 percent to global greenhouse gas (GHG) net emissions, and is disproportionately impacted by climate change and variability, all the countries of the region have committed to mitigation in their NDCs. With the exception of Nauru, Samoa and Tonga, all countries - representing 99.8 percent of economy-wide net emissions in the region - have set a general GHG target. However, without implementation of the NDCs, total net emissions in 2030 are expected to increase by around 150 percent compared to those reported in 2015.The analysis provided in this report captures the strong commitment of the countries in the region to take action under the Paris Agreement, and the significant risks that climate change poses for their agriculture and food security. Their NDCs highlight that risks from drought, flood, water stress and coastal erosion are of paramount concern. While much progress has been made, conflict and human-induced and natural disasters are causing setbacks. This year's The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World warns that the long-term declining trend in undernourishment seems to have come to a halt and may have reversed, largely on account of the above-mentioned factors. Meanwhile, though progress continues to be made in reducing child malnutrition, rising overweight and obesity are a concern in most parts of the world. These and other findings are detailed in the 2017 edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (formerly, The State of Food Insecurity in the World). For the first time, this year's report is published by an expanded partnership, with UNICEF and WHO now joining FAO, IFAD and WFP. The report also marks a new era in the monitoring of food security and nutrition in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. To assess progress made towards the goal of ending hunger, the report uses both the traditional measure of the prevalence of undernourishment and a new indicator, the prevalence of severe food insecurity, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale. The report further looks at various forms of malnutrition, including trends and situations for child stunting, wasting and overweight and for adult obesity, breastfeeding and anaemia in women. The thematic part of the report sheds light on how the increasing incidence of conflict in the world is affecting food security and nutrition. It also explores how, by improving food security and nutrition and by making rural livelihoods more resilient, it is possible to help prevent conflicts and sustain peace.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738101883153,"sku":"NGR9789251098882","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251098883.jpg?v=1751385081"},{"product_id":"transhumant-grazing-systems-in-temperate-asia-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251049778","title":"Transhumant grazing systems in temperate Asia","description":"Transhumant grazing refers to the seasonal transfer of livestock from one grazing ground to another. Based on the review, the expert committee considered that children with SAM have an increase in susceptibility to bacteraemia and sepsis that is probably between twofold and fivefold compared with children who are not malnourished and are of the same age and live in the same communities. On the basis of its common occurrence as a cause of infections and serious illnesses in children with SAM, and its documented ability to contaminate, survive in, and cause outbreaks of illness associated with low-moisture foods similar to RUFs, the expert committee concluded that Salmonella is the pathogen of most concern in lipid-based RUFs. Many outbreaks of foodborne salmonellosis have been determined to be associated with low-moisture foods that were contaminated at low levels. Therefore, the expert committee carefully considered the qualitative microbiological analyses of RUFs and the contamination levels that could be inferred, and entered into an extended deliberation of dose-response modelling to find a path toward a reasonable approximation of the likely morbidity and mortality in SAM children that could be anticipated from consumption of RUFs contaminated at the estimated levels and observed frequency. The expert committee described three approaches that purchasers of RUFs might use to establish microbiological criteria to assure the safety of RUFs and to communicate to manufacturers their safety expectations. These approaches are: (i) reference to existing standards established for similar low-moisture foods; (ii) determining an acceptable increase in risk over the pre-existing baseline of illness from other sources of exposure; and (iii) process verification sampling using the moving window technique. The microbiological criteria derived by each of these approaches accomplish different purposes, and which is most appropriate is determined by the conditions of manufacture and use","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742801338641,"sku":"NGR9789251339305","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251339309.jpg?v=1750935889"},{"product_id":"pulses-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251091722","title":"Pulses","description":"The aim of raising global awareness on the multitude of benefits of pulses was integral to the International Year of Pulses. Some of the data gathered suggest the importance of not referring to family farms and small interchangeably: the latter account for 84 percent of all farms worldwide, but operate only around 12 percent of all agricultural land, and produce roughly 36 percent of the world's food. The paper also considers evidence on labour and age provided by the censuses. The publication concludes that there is a need to improve agricultural censuses if we want to deepen our understanding of farms, including indicators such as the ages of farm workers and agricultural holders, and information on seasonal or temporary hired labour. It is a testimony of the collaboration between the regulatory sector within the Ministry of Environment and Food (and its agriculture-focused precursors), private veterinary practitioners and swine producers (large and small), to tackle the unsustainable overuse of antibiotics in the industry, and is a retrospective tribute to all those who had the foresight to make significant changes to ensure consumer protection: improving hygiene at primary sites of swine production, developing options for intervention through a system of surveillance and collation of data from feed mills to veterinary practitioner prescriptions, identifying sites for intervention, setting targets, restructuring the relationship between the veterinary services and farmers, and implementing changes in behaviour for greatest impact. Denmark in many ways laid out a plan before there was any known roadmap to follow; each step was based on continuous analysis and feedback to the operators - private and public - for ongoing monitoring and accountability as a driver for change. It is hoped that this historical guide may serve other countries, food producers, regulators, veterinarians and those responsible for veterinary structures, as well as academia, to identify ways forward to limit the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance, which is threatening public health, animal health and safe food production worldwide.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50697771057425,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697772990737,"sku":"NGR9789251312216","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251312214.jpg?v=1750776085"},{"product_id":"near-east-and-north-africa-regional-overview-of-food-insecurity-2016-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251096482","title":"Near East and North Africa regional overview of food insecurity 2016","description":"The Regional Overview of Food Insecurity provide an overview of key trends in food security and nutrition across FAO's five official regions. Most countries in the Near East and North Africa region enjoyed a steady improvement in their food security and nutrition situation up to the beginning of the decade. Food production was rising and the prevalence of undernourishment and poverty was receding as well as the prevalence of stunting and anaemia. The situation has, however, sharply deteriorated since 2012. Not only the prevalence of undernourishment, but even the numbers of undernourished have increased. The deterioration is largely driven by the spreading and intensity of conflicts and protracted crises. The Syria crisis in particular has deepened during the period 2015-2016, leaving more than half of the population in need of food assistance and 4.8 million refugees, mostly in neighbouring countries. Water scarcity and climate change are also fundamental challenges. The report underlines the urgency to develop and implement strategies for adaptation and sustainable management of resources. It documents several positive experiences and highlights the importance of accelerating investments to improve water efficiency and water productivity as well as the need for a shift towards crops that consume less water.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50697786523921,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697789833489,"sku":"NGR9789251096482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251096481.jpg?v=1751351443"},{"product_id":"fisheries-emergency-rapid-assessment-tool-ferat-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251323144","title":"Fisheries Emergency Rapid Assessment Tool (FERAT)","description":"The Fisheries Emergency Rapid Assessment Tool (FERAT) guides the assessment of fisheries after natural or technological disasters and during complex or protracted emergencies. While agriculture absorbs the rural workforce, generates income and increases food security, it has become the most significant driver of freshwater exploitation. This has led to generalized phenomena of imbalance between water supply and water demand, which can be tackled by enhancing water use efficiency. The Water Accounting Plus (WA+) system designed by IHE Delft with its partners FAO and IWMI has been applied to gain full insights into the state of the water resources in the basin","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50697861071121,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697863430417,"sku":"NGR9789251326619","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251326614.jpg?v=1751417440"},{"product_id":"turkey-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251323519","title":"Turkey","description":"The Syrian Refugee Resilience Plan (SRRP) is FAO's guiding document to support the Government of Turkey in addressing the needs of Syrians under Temporary Protection (SuTPs) and vulnerable host communities in Turkey. The plan is based on a holistic cooperative approach involving a variety of actors, as well as partnerships with the private sector and local institutions that have been the main service providers for SuTPs and local populations. The plan is structured around five pillars: promoting skills and knowledge for sustainable agricultural livelihoods and food security and nutrition; supporting employability and entrepreneurship in the food and agriculture sector; investing in the sustainable development of the agriculture sector and utilization of natural resources; improving access to social protection; and managing knowledge in the food security and agriculture sector. It aims to directly support the resilience of more than 60 000 households (approx. 300 000 people, of which at least 40 percent are women and women-headed households) from Syrian and host communities in Turkey affected by the crisis. It also includes capacity-building initiatives for national and local government bodies, non-governmental organizations and local institutions, such as associations and cooperatives.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50697869132049,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697871130897,"sku":"NGR9789251323519","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251323518.jpg?v=1751128715"},{"product_id":"review-of-agricultural-trade-policies-in-post-soviet-countries-2017-2018-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251328569","title":"Review of agricultural trade policies in post-Soviet countries 2017-2018","description":"This review monitors the latest changes in trade policies in post-Soviet countries, and how they affect the dynamics and structure of trade. The publication includes an overview of the prospects for expanding the agricultural trade of some Central Asian countries with China and the Russian Federation, and a chapter on the implications of climate change for agricultural trade in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The publication also features 12 country-specific chapters. These cover the trade measures implemented by national governments that influence agricultural product exports and imports, the participation of the countries in multilateral, regional and bilateral trade agreements, and recent changes in domestic support for agricultural manufacturers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50697918316817,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697921757457,"sku":"NGR9789251328569","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251328560.jpg?v=1751001132"},{"product_id":"drivers-and-stressors-of-resilience-to-food-insecurity-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251352274","title":"Drivers and stressors of resilience to food insecurity","description":"Resilience is often associated with multivalued and multi-faceted strategies, programs, and projects. After approximately 15 years of empirical evidence in the literature, few research questions remain unexplored and unanswered, especially with the recent occurrence of a global pandemic. In this paper, we are assessing whether there are few and consistently relevant elements that determine resilience capacity as well as investigating which shocks are most dramatically reducing resilience. We also investigate which coping strategies are most frequently adopted in the presence of shocks. Our results show that diversification of income sources, education, access to land, livestock, and agricultural inputs, are the main drivers of households' resilience capacity. Moreover, the most prevailing shocks are found to be natural, health and livelihood-related shocks. In addition to this, we show that reducing the quantity and quality of food consumed, seeking an extra job, selling assets, taking credit, relying on relatives and social networks are the most adopted coping strategies. Finally, we found that coping strategies are able to mitigate the adverse effects of shocks on resilience capacity; however, they are not sufficient to offset their long-term negative consequences. Our conclusion is that adequate investments in resilience are conditional to a) engaging with activities that are broadly consistent across countries and b) fine-tuning the interventions based on context-specificity","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50698269163793,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698272276753,"sku":"NGR9789251352274","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251352275.jpg?v=1750969157"},{"product_id":"handbook-on-the-integrated-crop-management-of-groundnut-and-sesame-for-farmer-fi-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251362761","title":"Handbook on the integrated crop management of groundnut and sesame for farmer field schools in central dry zone of Myanmar","description":"This curriculum briefly outlines Integrated pest management (IPM) for these selected crops, paddy, groundnut, sesame, green gram, and chickpea. Rural youth face many hurdles in trying to earn a livelihood. They do not perceive agriculture as a remunerative or prestigious profession, and until they find meaningful economic opportunities and attractive environments in rural areas, they will continue to migrate to cities. This trend not only contributes to the emerging phenomenon of over-urbanization and growing unemployment in urban areas, but is also expected to affect global food production. Investing in young people living in rural areas is therefore key to enhancing agricultural productivity, boosting rural economies and ensuring food security. This publication provides real life examples on how to re-engage youth in agriculture. It shows how tailor-made educational programmes can provide rural youth with the skills and insights needed to engage in farming and adopt environmentally friendly production methods. Many of the initiatives and approaches reported in this study originate from the youth themselves. The following study was a joint undertaking of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51313653481745,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51313655906577,"sku":"GOR013832232","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9251084750.jpg?v=1750840089"},{"product_id":"sustainable-bioenergy-potential-in-zambia-book-food-and-agriculture-organizat-9789251334744","title":"Sustainable bioenergy potential in Zambia","description":"This report defines which bioenergy options can be viable solutions for electricity production, cooking fuels and transport fuels in Zambia.
