She had a fleet of galleys under her command (four of them Scots). In 1559 her husband was killed in an ambush and not long after she took as a lover a survivor of a shipwreck. Clansmen came over from Scotland and murdered him. She tracked them down and had them killed, and from then on there follow episodes of plunder, kidnapping, piracy and general mayhem. In 1586 she was captured by the Earl of Ormond and was actually on the scaffold with a rope around her neck when she was saved on the orders of Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth offered to make her a countess. Grace refused, but was officially allowed to be a privateer thereafter. She may also have been an intelligencer for Elizabeth's spymaster, Walsingham, thus able to warn the Queen of the Essex plot. Elizabeth died in 1603, by which time Grace had entered a nunnery.
On the morning of Saturday, 24 March 1994, the body of an elderly woman was found in a copse six miles outside Shrewsbury. There were superficial injuries but later it would be said that the cause of death was hypothermia. Her car was in a nearby lane, skewed in a shallow ditch. Its presence had twice been reported to police, but nothing had been done. The police said, and still maintain, that the woman's death was the result of an opportunist burglary that went tragically wrong. The woman's name was Hilda Murrell - a 79 year-old rose-grower and anti-nuclear campaigner whose nephew, Robert Green, had been involved in the decision to sink the Argentine battleship "Belgrano". Her death coincided with frantic activity at the highest level to discover who was leaking information on the event to MP Tam Dalyell. This book presents new and previously unpublished evidence about the events surrounding the death of Hilda Murrell, and is an indictment of the behaviour of the government's security services.
One of Daphne du Maurier's earliest works was a history of her family, particularly of her grandfather George du Maurier, the "Punch" cartoonist and author of "Trilby", and her father, the actor Gerald. But it was as a popular novelist that she would excel, and by the end of the 1930s "Rebecca" was a literary phenomenon, translated into 20 languages. Daphne's father was fiercely possessive of her, but at the age of 25 she married "Boy" Browning, then the youngest major in the British Army, and soon settled in the Cornish mansion which was featured in "Rebecca" and around which the plot of "The King's General" was constructed. Her sense of place and atmosphere and gift of story-telling ensured a succession of bestselling novels such as "Jamaica Inn", "Frenchman's Creek" and "My Cousin Rachel". After her husband's death she moved to another mansion which became the setting for "The House on the Strand", and became increasingly removed from family and friends until her death. The author has written books on Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama. These ambitious young men filled a yawning chasm in London, living life, as Marlowe put it, on 'the slicing edge' of death. With the help of anecdotes, this book aims to recreate the lives and times of the playwrights and actors such as, Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Jonson, as well as the world in which they lived from 1578 when Burbage built the first 'purpose built' theatre to 1620 when the great age came to its end. Sentenced to hang in 1786, she was instead transported to Australia, from where she made a daring escape, only to be recaptured and brought back to London chained to the ship's deck in an open cage. Imprisoned in Newgate, and again threatened with death, her cause was championed by James Boswell, who was so taken by her that he defended her at her trial, winning her first a reprieve and then a full pardon. May Bryant's life reads like romantic fiction, yet this quietly spoken woman from a respectable home, who was not considered conventionally attractive, lived more dangerously than any fictitious heroine. Judith Cook has pieced together her life from various sources, including Boswell's diaries and archive material in Australia, Holland and the United States.
On 30th May 1593 the body of a young man was found in a room in a house in Deptford, stabbed through the eye. His discovery was to lead on to the biggest epidemic of the disease the world has ever seen, the slaughter (at the last count) of nearly four million animals, the virtual closure of the countryside, major pollution of the environment from pyres and burial pits, the abolition of a whole government department and the postponement of a General Election. At the time of writing (summer 2001), it is not over yet. The worst case, the nightmare scenario, suggests it could continue well into next year. The Year of The Pyres follows the story of the epidemic from day one until the present. It documents how mistake after mistake was made initially, thus helping the disease to spread; how, for weeks, Agriculture Minister Nick Brown and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) kept on telling the country that everything was under control - until the water closed over their heads and they lost the plot. The policy of mass slaughter, promoted by government scientists and statisticians, has been described by many colleagues as 'mediaeval'. Strong pressure to vaccinate was rejected by the government, heavily influenced by the National Farmers' Union. The book covers the cases for and against vaccination, along with many personal, and often tragic, stories. It also includes input from a variety of experts on the subject. It ends with the questions that need to be asked and suggestions as to where we go from here to ensure the tragedy never happens again.
A wherryman hauls a girls body out of the River Thames, he takes it to the medical practitioner and horoscope caster Dr Forman. She had a fleet of galleys under her command (four of them Scots). In 1559 her husband was killed in an ambush and not long after she took as a lover a survivor of a shipwreck. Clansmen came over from Scotland and murdered him. She tracked them down and had them killed, and from then in there follow episodes of plunder, kidnapping, piracy and general mayhem. In 1586 she was captured by the Earl of Ormond and was actually on the scaffold with a rope around her neck when she was saved on the orders of Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth offered to make her a countess. Grace refused, but was officially allowed to be a "privateer" thereafter. She may also have been an intelligencer for Elizabeth's spymaster, Walsingham, thus able to warn the Queen of the Essex plot. In her most characteristic work, her studies of children and domestic interiors, she is clearly a match for her male colleagues painting their more grimly realistic depictions of life in the Cornish fishing community. Elizabeth was central to the cultural and artistic life of the area, running with her husband the celebrated Newlyn School of Painting.

Lately, Bennie Rosato has her eye focused firmly on the bottom line, especially since she has three dedicated young associates and a very pregnant secretary on her payroll, so she takes a professional risk, charging into a class action lawsuit that could make -- or break -- her career.

Then her wallet goes missing. This book considers the present climate and examines instances of what has gone wrong: abuses of the political system; the ever-increasing use of patronage; the lack of accountability now in all walks of public life; the manipulation of statistics; the chief executive salary scandals; the differences between public and private morality; and the grey area of what is strictly legal and what is not. It also looks at ways of making those responsible more accountable, and how best such situations can be prevented in the future. The analysis sets out to pinpoint the failings in the present administration, and embraces the question of the erosion of democracy.
When, in September 1591, Dr Simon Foreman and his servants, John and Anna Bradedge, attend an afternoon performance at London's Rose Theatre, they are keen to see a brilliant new device - the stage trap door. It is based on conversations and personal memories collected for over twenty years and is illustrated with many contemporary photographs of the times remembered. The people Judith Cook talked to—who among other things mined, fished, worked the land and brewed ale, and worked in stone and slate—lived through an era which spanned man’s first flight and the first landing on the moon. Their way of life, which in many parts of the country had remained unchanged over the centuries, is fast passing from sight and memory. What Judith Cook succeeded brilliantly in doing is to record the stories of some extraordinary ordinary people, how they worked and how they felt, before it was too late.
This study contains interviews with a wide variety of theatrical directors, ranging from Sir Peter Hall, the former director of the National Theatre, to Wendy Toye, Alan Ayckbourn, Adrian Noble, Philip Hedley and younger talents such as Nicholas Hytner and Deborah Warner. The volume has been revised and updated to include new developments in the theatre and information on how directors work, how they create a production and how they perceive the actors in their roles. There is also a section on the criticisms that are made of directors' theatre and designers' theatre.
